EDITORIAL
by Rod WardHERE WE ARE AGAIN
THANK YOU FOR THAT
I must thank the many readers from outside the UK who contacted me (as their closest point of contact here) to express sympathy and solidarity after the London suicide bombings on 1 July 2005. The fact that many of the perpetrators came from the Leeds area added to the immediacy of the news for many of you. It seems that this was the first time the city of Leeds had featured on the news in many countries, and not in the most pleasant context. For example, John Whitehead says, 'I have never been to Leeds, but always felt kindly towards it because of my favourite ever album; The Who: Live at Leeds, and of course due to the presence of the former shop and MAR'. John also noted with surprise that Leeds was so large, with a population of over 700,000 (more than in the entire state of Wyoming, where he lives). And I don't suppose that total includes us, out here in rural North Yorkshire. We do have a Leeds postcode, in spite of being in the next county and 15 miles from the city centre. We must continue to improve international understanding and communication between civilised people of all races and religions in every way we can. Even Model Auto Review connects readers who just want to enjoy their lives peaceably and make friends with like-minded people in all parts of the world. Just look at the countries listed next to the names of contributors in the contents list above.
SCHUCO SPONSORS F1
Gerald Watkins observes: 'I thought Schuco must be doing well if they can afford F1 sponsorship; their name appeared emblazoned prominently on the overalls of the two McLaren drivers in the British Grand Prix. However, there is another company called Schüco (with an umlaut on the u) and checking back on the pictures this seems to be the one. They are Your partner in aluminium, PVC-U and glass construction systems so they're not really obviously connected with F1, unless they've been involved in buildings at some of the new circuits. A few years back Minichamps managed to get on the side pods of a Benetton for the German Grand Prix and I think that's the most a model car firm has managed in the high priced world of F1'.
Is Gerald correct? I recall Provence Moulage and Starter sponsor stickers, but I think they were on Le Mans cars. Bburago had their name on something a few years back, and what about Matchbox? Didn't they sponsor a monoposto in the 1970s? Experts forward, please.
FIRST CHOICE LAUNCH AT KEMPTON PARK
Colin Summerbell, ex-Sales Director of Corgi, has set up a new company, First Choice Collectables, which will distribute Gemini Jets aircraft, Witty Wings aircraft, Minic Ships and High Speed 1:43 and 1:64 scale diecast vehicles. Colin will show his ranges for the first time to the UK public on 2 October at Kempton Park Toy Fair. This long-running and popular swapmeet, previously known as 'Heathrow International', has now been taken over from former organiser Christine Hines by Anne Martin of A&R Fairs. If her name sounds familiar, Anne's husband is Russell Martin, proprietor of JM Toys, which was established by his father, the well-known toy world personality John Martin. The relaunch of the Kempton Park event on 2 October will see an earlier opening time and increased advertising, and there is already a waiting list for stalls, according to Anne.

A PEEP OVER THE FENCE
By Rod WardAircraft modelling has always split into two camps, with relatively little overlap between the enthusiasts for either specialism. On the one hand we have the scale modellers, whose aircraft are mostly static and as detailed and accurate as possible. The models were originally carved from solid wood, then plastics, cast metal and other materials have come along so that almost every aircraft ever made is available in a variety of scales and materials, ready built or as kits. The other group of enthusiasts can see no point in a plane unless it flies, and detailed accuracy is less important. Their world started with chuck gliders, rubber power, then with internal combustion engines, tethered, free flight, then ultimately radio controlled. Each group of enthusiasts likes to look over the fence from time to time at what the others are up to, and a new Schiffer book offers us just such a glimpse of the world of flying models, the collectible items which result, and their values. It is made even more interesting by the fact that this concentrates on the American market, so there are differences from what European collectors may think they already know.
Over 600 colour illustrations make this the most interesting new book I have opened this year so far, of many hundreds I have seen.
The author does not claim the book to be complete (it just couldn't be, major aspects had to be omitted), but it offers fascinating insights for any model aviation fan. The concentration is on i/c powered aircraft and on proprietary kits, rather than one-offs. This is in line with the main movements in 'collectibles' in other fields, where famous brands get more of a value-related following than one-off projects, regardless of quality or efficacy. Omitted, therefore, are 'ready to fly' products, solid wood scale models, helicopters, Jetex, rockets, hovercraft and gliders, though the author realises their importance. There just wasn't space to include it all. He has, however, packed in an astonishing amount of nostalgic material, and Schiffer are to be congratulated on matching his work with high production values. A keenly collected field nowadays is that of model aero engines, the vintage ones not in use, but carefully displayed in glass cases like so many butterflies impaled on pins. A detailed history of the development of these power units is accompanied by photos of dozens of rare pieces. Similarly, scores of rare early kits are illustrated by their box art, each with a detailed and helpful caption and valuation. For me the revelation of this book is the 'magazines' section, illustrated by around 150 covers in full colour. These are from general market titles (Mechanix Illustrated, Popular Science, Collier's etc), aircraft magazines (Popular Aviation, Air Trails etc) and model magazines (Model Aircraft Builder, Model Airplane News etc). Amazing and beautiful. Many rare titles are pictured in the section of model aviation books, mostly of the 'how-to' variety. At this point I am only halfway through the book. Following sections are devoted to radio control and accessories, catalogues, organisations and other memorabilia (including old fuel cans, dope bottles, glow plugs, propellors etc), plus pictures of old contests from an enthusiast's scrapbook. An appendix is devoted to prices realised on eBay, and another to the Academy of Model Aeronautics Hall of Fame. Anyone interested in model aircraft will find this peep 'over the fence' irresistible and highly enjoyable.

The Minor LCV (Light Commercial Vehicle) is much loved by enthusiasts and its story has been well told here by the historian of the Minor LCV Register. There is so much crammed in here that I can only skate over the contents. Famous fleets of Minors include the Danish, Swedish and British mail vans, the latter including the rubber-wing vans with separate headlamps as recently pictured in MAR. Road service fleets, including the AA and RAC were keen Minor users. Overseas productions included Australian utes and locally-bodied vehicles from New Zealand, Cyprus, Malta, Uruguay and many other far-flung places. There are unusual special bodies, such as ice cream vans, gown vans, lutons and artics. The story is completed with the Austin Minor van and an account of modern restoration and construction using GRP components. This book is essential for Minor fans, and of interest to many others as well.

BEDFORD COMMERCIALS of the 1930s by Robert Berry (Classic Marques Vol 5). Pub-lished by Nostalgia Road, Units 5-8 Chancel Place, Shap Road Industrial Estate, Kendal LA9 6NZ. 52 pages, softbound. 210 x 200 mm. ISBN 1-90316-36-3. £7.95 Thanks to an ex-Bedford employee who found in the Dunstable factory archives an unpublished 1939 sales promotion catalogue, Nostalgia Road have been able to put together this interesting volume. After an introduction to the company's products from its foundation to 1939, the bulk of the book is devoted to reproduction of the 1939 material, photos, captions and all. Some pictures are familiar, but many are not, and offer a fascinating view of the wide range on offer when war stopped civilian production. The original captions are not very informative, basically sales slogans, so if the reader doesn't already know much about prewar Bedfords, identifying some of the vehicles could be tricky. The special bodies, elaborate liveries and evocative settings make the illustrations particularly notable. Great fun for fans of old trucks.

YELLOWAY (Buses): Prestige Series 30, by Keith Healey and John Banks, 170 x 240mm softbound, 64 pages, ISBN 1 898432 45.7. Venture Publications Ltd, 128 Pikes Lane, Glossop, Derbyshire. SK13 8EH. £9.50.
Anyone travelling by coach a generation ago would have seen Yelloway buses parked at the comfort stops. The respected Allen family of Rochdale called their buses Yelloway from 1932 onwards, and Keith Healey knew them personally. He died in December 2004 at the age of 74, before this book was completed, so John Banks had to finish the story and bring it to publication. The whole story is told from the Associated Motorways era before and after the War, to co-ordination with National Travel in the 1970s and deregulation in the 1980s. In 1985 Hubert Allen retired and the company was sold to ATL of Yorkshire. The Department of Transport vehicle examiners prohibited the use of most of the company's coaches in 1987, so the fleet and operations were drastically reduced, but maintenance problems persisted and ATL closed Yelloway in November 1988, an ignominious end for a fine name. ATL in turn passed to National Express in 1989. The many photographs in this book range from 1920s buses, via 1950s luxury coaches to the unpopular Neoplan double deckers of the ATL era.

FORD CARS 1945-64 by Alan Earnshaw - Robert Berry (Classic Marques Vol 1). Pub-lisher Nostalgia Road, Units 5-8 Chancel Place, Shap Road Industrial Estate, Kendal LA9 6NZ. 52 pp, softbound. 210 x 200 mm, 115 photos. ISBN 1-90316-69-X. £7.95
This is a revised version of the first Nostalgia Road Classic Marques volume. Additional photos and text expand the story of English Ford cars from the first postwar products to the Mark I Cortina. Most of the pictures are stock FoMoCo shots and the text is clear and competent. I would have liked to see a chronological chart recording the lifespan of each model, so the reader could easily see which cars were marketed in any one year. This book will be a useful introduction to anyone who needs an overview of Dagenham products from the postwar era.

THE RISE OF JAGUAR by Barrie Price. 176 pages, 225 photos, 5 drawings, hardbound with dustjacket. 260 x 260mm ISBN 1-904788-27-0. Published by and available from Veloce Publishing Limited; 33 Trinity Street, Dorchester DT1 1TT.
A detailed study of the Standard era, 1928 to 1950, how SS (Swallow Sidecars) metamorphosed into Jaguar, how the company prospered and the importance of the relationship with the Standard Motor Company. These 22 years saw the foundation of the company's success as a motor manufacturer, and they represent the period in which the marque's character was defined. With much hitherto unpublicised information and superb, evocative contemporary photographs Barrie Price tells the story of this 'Cinderella' period, often glossed over by historians more interested in the XK era.

The Dune Buggy Files Past Present Future by James Hale. 112 pages, 183 photographs. Paperbound 250 x 250mm. ISBN 1-904788-08-4. Published by and available from Veloce Publishing Limited; 33 Trinity Street; Dorchester DT1 1TT, England.
Dune buggies have been around for over four decades. Their colourful history is told here, from crude off-roaders of the 1960s to the superb show vehicles of the 1980s and 1990s. Many of the excellent period photographs have never been seen before. The book covers buggies from the west coast of the USA, from the UK and from Europe, a chance to see how the major vehicle manufacturers see the buggy concept and their futuristic styling of buggy show cars. The picture story begins with the American buggies, mostly built on shortened Beetle chassis, as made in miniature by Corgi and Dinky for example, on to French and Italian creations, as made by Solido, and the new Volkswagen Concept T as made by Norev.

Volkswagen Model Club: 'This club and its magazine have both been maintained and produced since the beginning in 1978 by Jim McLachlan, which must be something of a record amongst clubs and magazines', notes the new editor of the magazine, Mark Johnson, 'Bug End' 19 Lodge Avenue, Castleford. West Yorkshire. WF10 3LT. email info@vwtoysandmodels.co.uk. Tel: 01977 552249. For information on membership, send an SAE to Jim McLachlan 20 Waverley Park, Redding Falkirk. Scotland. FK2 9RT. email volkswagen.modelclub@virgin.net
New Zealand Model Vehicle Club: Miniature Auto, newsletter of the CMTC, is now being edited again by Ron Ford, so I now see it after a long absence. He will gradually put his stamp back on the publication, and add his usual flashes of humour. For membership information, contact Eric Brockie on (03) 448 9276 or email austinrk@paradise.net.nz
Cape Model and Toy Club: Ron Gersbank points out that the club is now in its 20th year. He also notes that CARS Club, based in Johannesburg, is its 29th year, 27 of them publishing a newsletter. The Club holds a Christmas in June luncheon, in their cold season. The four course buffet costs £4.50. The latest issue of Cape Model Collector includes a précis of the story of Tri-ang in South Africa. The company made their toys in SA from 1954 to 1972, until the company was sold to Afrikander Toys who made them as Playful and Jabula, as well as Tri-ang. This company was again sold in the 1980s to Strike Engineering, which in turn collapsed in 1999, the press tools being auctioned in 2000. Okkie Ehlers bought up almost all the press tools and re-started production under the Tough Toys name. To join the club, contact Secretary Graham Ramsay on 072 156 6806 at any hour.
West Australian Model Collectors Club: In the latest issue of Showcase, Editor Ian Hind includes reports on the Model Auto Expo 2005, with a note on the catering. Over 200 'sausage sizzles' were consumed by members and the public. Other interesting items include a history of US brand Midgetoys, made in Rockford Illinois by A&E Tool and Gage from 1946 to 1981. New owners failed to invest and the payroll dropped from over 100 to only five. Founders Al and Earl Herdklotz bought the firm back, but were unable to restart production, so they decided to sell off much of the remaining stock of toys. Sadly, Al died at the end of 2002, since when a legal dispute has stopped any further development of the brand. To read more of this in Showcase you have to join the club, phone 934 9369, or email jhind@iinet.net.au
Brooklin Collectors Club: In the latest Brooklin Collector, John Roberts notes that the new Lansdowne Armstrong-Siddeley 234 will be fitted with wire wheels and be finished in powder blue, like the Earls Court Show car. He also comments that the Sunbeam Talbot Ten, promised for the end of the year, will be the first-ever model of this 'very pretty little car'. Editor Jack Patrick notes some specials made for other clubs: San Francisco Bay Area Club: Ford Ranchero pickup 1957 in grey Satti Napa winery livery, with basket of grapes in the back, 200 made. Canadian Toy Collectors Society: Hudson Terraplane sedan 1936, Upper Canada Cab Co cream grey with red interior, 200 made. Lansdowne Collectors Club: Ford Corsair 1964 red with black vinyl roof, approx 110 made. These models are only available to members of the respective clubs. To join the BCC, phone Membership Secretary John Bowyer on 01276 473499.
Maidenhead Static Model Club: Wheel Bearings Editor Les Duplock had his MRR hat on with a stand at the Gaydon CVTRC rally. Parked behind them was a Bedford S tipper which first rolled back into their stand and van, then reversed into it. the EZ-Up stand was irreparably damaged and the VW van needed bodywork repairs, though luckily no-one was behind the stand at the time and there were no injuries. It's a reminder to ensure that your insurance company knows that you are using your vehicle for business at such events, otherwise they may choose not to pay out in the event of a similar mishap.
