ModeleX 2000
Ray Strutt tells us that ModeleX 2000, the Millennium show, is go! Your annual opportunity to see all that's best in hand-built models and kits comes on Saturday and Sunday 14 and 15 October at the National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull, Birmingham, where the show has been held every year since the first ModeleX in 1990. Now in its 11th year, The Scale Model Motor Show for the white metal and resin industry attracts visitors from the UK, Europe, North America and the Far East, all of whom appreciate the finesse and skills of precision model building. This year, as well as exhibitors from the UK, others are coming from Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and the USA. The 11th National Kit Building Championships are in the care of the Northern Model Car Club and the South Hants Model Auto Club. Intending participants should contact Chris Derbyshire, tel-fax 01794 390036 for details and entry forms. The established ModeleX Prize Draw will, it is hoped, take the money raised over the years for handicapped children's and young adults' charities above the £10,000 mark.
As well as the manufacurers' exhibits, specialist retailers will be displaying and selling a full range of models, many not readily available at any other time. The atmosphere is friendly, with all participants happy to talk about their interests and their products with collectors. Indeed, many manufacturers rely on this feedback to develop their ranges. The 11th annual Brooklin promotional model, which will be first available at the show, is their recently released Ford Station Wagon, finished in a new colour scheme for ModeleX. The National Motorcycle Museum is easy to find by road, situated by Junction 6 of the M42, alongside the A45, and only a short distance from Birmingham International Airport and Train Station. The show is open on Saturday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm and on Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. For more details, especially to if you wish to check on late availability of trade stands, contact Ray Strutt, PO Box 39, Uckfield, TN22 27ZL, UK. Two Chicago PCCs are ready now. First is a pre-war PCC of 1936/37 vintage (166). In February 1936 Chicago Surface Lines ordered 83 PCC cars from St Louis Car Co. Fifty cars purchased in the name of the Chicago Railways Co were numbered 4002-4051 and 33 cars were purchased by Chicago City Railway Co numbered 7002-7034. Deliveries started in the autumn of the same year and service began on the Madison Avenue line in November 1936. By February 1937 all 83 cars were in service. Chicago's 50 foot 5 inch long cars were the first non-standard PCCs. Painted dark blue from the belt rail down, the 1936 PCCs were known in Chicago as Blue Geese. The second Chicago PCC is a 1946/47 Pullman-Standard car. Chicago Surface Lines ordered a 600-car PCC fleet in 1945-46 and Pullman-Standard built 310 of them between 1946 and 1948 (orders W6749 and W6786) equipped by General Electric and numbered 4062-4371. The first Pullman PCC #4062 was previewed for the public in September 1946. In 1953 one of the Pullman cars (#4240) was sent to St Louis Car for conversion into a PCC-type rapid transit car for the L subway system. By the end of 1955, all 310 Pullman PCCs were sent to St Louis. The bodies were scrapped, but the trucks, seats, controls and other parts were incorporated in the 6201-6510 series rapid transit cars. A new range of ACF-Brill C-44 buses is introduced now. After the Second World War two new city buses were introduced by ACF-Brill: C-36 and C-44, reflecting the number of passengers. They were underfloor engined designs using six cylinder Hall Scott engines, the C-44 had a 200 hp model 180 engine. The C-36 and C-44 had a solid reputation for dependability, being sturdy and having the best ride of any bus on the market. In total, almost 1,100 C-44 models were produced. At first, Philadelphia, Chicago, Cincinnati and Baltimore liveries will be available. For more info, contact St Petersburg Tram Collection, PO Box. No 16, 196158 St Petersburg, Russia. By Hans-Georg SchmittThere always seem to have have been models of drinks trucks. The old Wiking Coca-Cola and Sinalco lorries are now very desirable, and the Berliet Kronenbourg beer truck is the most sought-after French Dinky Toy. More and more breweries realise the benefits of model trucks to promote their products, especially to those collectors who would like to put a model lorry from their favourite brewery alongside a stein and a beermat in the showcase. Come into the World of Krombacher is a catalogue which includes clothes, watches, glasses, tin signs and a wide range of model vehicles, both historic and current trucks. Nostalgic vehicles are divided between 1:87 and Lledo's non-specific toys.
Currently available 1:87 scale models:
2836 Büssing 8000 tilt drawbar1950 (Wiking)
2869 MAN 515 truck with tilt 1950 (Herpa)
Mercedes-Benz L311 with tilt 1950 (Herpa)
All three models are in light blue Krombacher Pils livery with black chassis.
Lledo models available, also all in light blue Krombacher Pils livery:
2809 Volkswagen van, version Tlb 1955, 1:50
2810 Opel Blitz van, 1950, 1:64. Actually a Bedford K 30 cwt lorry, which looks a bit similar to the Opel, except for round nose.
2867 Chevrolet beer truck 1934, 1:75
2868 Ford artic van 1935, 1:80The range of modern vehicles is only made in 1:87 scale. There are two different designs, one with white bodies with Krombacher in black lettering, and the latest version featuring the landscape with lake seen in current advertisements and television commercials with Krombacher text in white. First those with white body and black Krombacher text, all by Herpa:
2838 Mercedes-Benz Atego 2528 three axle van with roof spoiler.
2857 Scania 144 Topline, box artic
2858 MAN F2000 van with tandem-axle trailer
Body with landscape and white Krombacher: text:
2737 Mercedes-Benz Actros artic van (Wiking).
2837 Scania Bonneted T144, artic van with spoilers, sun-visor, chassis skirts and chrome wheel rims (Herpa). It is interesting to compare 2836, the Büssing 8000 and 2737, the Mercedes-Benz Actros, both by Wiking the same size and finish, so we can see how much progress truck design has madein 50 years. All are available from Krombacher Collection, Postfach 837160; D-90255 Nurnberg, Germany. Tel: 0180/5 66 99 22; Fax: 0180 5 66 99 200; Internet: www.krombacher.de

The book is expected to be available by the end of this year. The website is sub-divided under three headings, the prod ucts (including selected illustrations), the history of the company, and the forthcoming book (including updates on its progress.)
CLUB NEWS
Ferrari Model Club: Dominique Lahuec has achieved something of a coup for his Germany-based Ferrari Model Club, with new support from Ferrari Germany. Even this support is not enough to maintain the present publication rate of eight A4 club magazines every year. Dominique has subsidised the magazine from his personal funds, and the printers have agreed not to increase the print bill for two years, but unless 40 or 50 new members join this year, it may be necessary to make changes. If you are a Ferrariste, you should support Dominique's efforts and contact him at St Cajetan Strasse 13/S3, D-81669 München, Germany.
Brooklin Collectors Club: If you like Brooklin models you probably already know about the BCC, you may even be a member. Certainly Jack Patrick draws together all you'd ever need to know about Brooklins for every issue of The Brooklin Collector. For membership details contact John Bowyer, 57 Gloucester Road, Bagshot, Surrey GU19 5LT.
Jaguar Model Club: Among many Jaguar models described by Gary Oxley in the latest JMC magazine is a 1:3 scale Jaguar XK120 pedal car (described by Gary as a 'Peddle' car, as it is intended for sale, at prices from £1000 to £2500). It is made by Dieter Strasser of Germany, and JMC members will be able to obtain one at discount prices. For more information on the club, phone Gary on 01709 372003 or fax 01709 372002.
MAIDENHEAD Static Model Club will host Lledo, for their relaunch, at the Windsor Swapmeet on 30 September (at the Montem Sports Centre, Slough). To promote the occasion this photo was taken, with the words made up from Lledo models. Guess how many models were used, and send your answers on a postcard to MSMC Lledo Competition, PO Box 527, Enfield, Middlesex EN1 4DE. The first ten correct entries will win prizes chosen from among the photo-graphed models, each with a special certificate, and the remaining models will be sold at the Windsor Toy Fair.
Natal Diecast Model Collectors: Chairman Geoff Sear is leaving the NDMC, but not in acrimonious circumstances. The Sear family is leaving South Africa, to return to England. Other members have also recently dispersed overseas, notably to Australia and New Zealand, but there is a hard core of faithful supporters remaining in Durban and the surrounding areas to keep the NDMC going. We could have used a photo of Geoff for our Rogue's Gallery, but he is in a group shot of 30-odd NDMC members and their families. They look to be a particularly well-fed bunch, so all our references in MAR to 'Club Grub' must be appropriate after all. Potential members should contact Secretary Jan de Winnaar (described in the NDMC newsletter as Standart-enführer de Winnaar), at 19 Florence Road, Sarnia 3610, South Africa.

By John Comber.During June and July, Trax, the makers of excellent 1:43 scale diecast models of Australian cars, embarked on a promotional tour visiting five of Australia's state capital cities to meet Trax club members at first hand and show off some exciting new models at the same time. Attendance was strictly by club membership invitation only, and the attendance and response of members was excellent (in Melbourne 240 were present) with many members staying on after the advised closing time chatting with Trax directors. The show was on a Sunday afternoon, commencing with a short video which incorporated original footage of real Australian cars interspersed with footage of Trax models of the same cars. The meeting was addressed by Robert Hill of Top Gear, makers of Trax model cars, his talk followed by a spirited half hour of questions from members and the unveiling of soon to be released models. The main star here was the all-new HK model Holden Monaro GTS in bright yellow or platinum. Both looked stunning in 1:24 scale. Alongside these, also 1:24, was the ever-popular FJ Holden sedan looking great in two-tone green. New 1:43 scale releases ped were a racing Falcon GT HO and Torana XU1 as well as new colour variations for their HQ Monaro. The afternoon concluded with tea, and each member was presented with a surprise show bag of goodies including a cap, discount voucher and other Trax merchandise.
