EDITORIAL
by Rod Ward

WHEREVER YOU ARE...

In the Contents list above, most of the feature articles in this issue have come from UK contributors, whereas at one time most such material came in to us from other countries.

It is a different story in regard to our news input, however. Most of our news and photos come in from outside the UK, with Hans-Georg as the most prolific provider, of course. We are always happy to have more news, features, photos, whatever you can contribute, from wherever you are in the world.

... AND WHATEVER YOU WANT

Among our features is one under our rather neglected avia mini banner. When I started to look at early aeromodelling, I didn’t realise how many nostalgic names would surface.

I am sure they will provoke many memories among MAR readers. If you’d like us to look at other such forgotten fields in future, let me know what you would like us to check out.

AUTO REVIEW:
Hillman and Singer

The latest Auto Review book is now available, Hillman and Singer, which tells the stories of these two great British marques. The next title will be on Allard, Jensen, Railton and other British cars with American engines (but excluding AC Cobra, Bristol etc, which are to be covered in their own later titles). The last two titles this year will be the AC Album and the Lotus Album, which will include a complete list of Lotus type numbers. After that our first title in 2011 will cover ‘British Plastic’; Reliant, TVR, Gilbern, Fairthorpe etc. If you have any illustrations (advertisements, sales brochures, your own photographs etc) or any personal anecdotes you can offer on any subject, please send them to me as soon as possible for inclusion in future publications. I also invite your suggestions for future titles.

Ilario 1:43 handbuilt in France: Rolls-Royce Phantom I Jarvis Torpedo
Experimental sn17EX 1928 closed blue (IL43047T) limited to 80 pieces, open
with top blue (IL43047TF) limited to 80 pieces. Four experimental Phantoms
were commissioned by Rolls-Royce in the 1920s that would be capable of
hitting 100mph. 17EX was one of them, coachbuilt by Jarvis of Wimbledon in
1928. After 4,500 miles on test, it was sold to Maharaja Hari Singh Bahadur
of India. In 1976 the car was owned by two Italian enthusiasts. In the 1990s
a full restoration began, then a Dutch owner acquired it with the work
already under way.
In 2004 the restoration was completed, and at the 2006 Concorso Villa D’Este
it won the Trofeo Rolls-Royce for the most elegant Rolls-Royce. It was sold
again at the RM Auction in London in November 2009. 17EX only reached 92mph;
‘Perhaps the new owner will optimise this car to make Henry Royce’s dream
come true’, muses Ilario Chiera.

GEOFF’S POOR RESPONSE

Following the publication of pictures in MAR 242 of his latest 1:43 model, the Fairthorpe Rockette, Geoff Sear says he had no enquiries; all orders were from existing customers. So, are there more Fairthorpe fans out there? If you’d like more details on the Fairthorpe (£35.00 each or £100 for all three versions)
contact Geoff at sear@telkomsa.net

BIG RIVER IN FLOOD?

John Halcrow has updated us on new models in his 1:43 Australian handbuilt range, Big River. The next release is an Armstrong Siddeley Typhoon, followed by three Bristols, 405 saloon, 402 drophead coupe and 405 drophead coupe.

OLD MARs, ANYONE?

Roland Shergold says, ‘I have back copies of Model Auto Review in hard back, good condition from 1984 until 2000’. Please contact rolandshergold@msn.com

Barry Lester

Barry Lester, of Auto Replicas and BKL fame, died on 9 July. His wife, Genevieve, gave the sad news to Barry Lloyd, who notes ‘Another of the old names gone’. Barry Lester was one of the pioneers of our industry. We pass on our condolences to his family.

RON GERSBANK of South Africa

While complimenting Nigel at Brooklin Models on Lansdowne LDM78 Lagonda V12 Drophead Coupe open 1939, notes this car’s unusual feature of a single sideways-mounted rear seat. On the model, Ron says, ‘it can unfortunately only be partially seen if one shines a light into the narrow gap between the front seats and the tonneau cover. I suggest that it would be advantageous to reduce the width of the latter so that the seating arrangement can more easily be seen. If this drophead coupe is later issued in a different colour with the hood erected, can it have wire spoked wheels as on most of the original cars, and two tone paintwork (if necessary at a higher price)?’ Ron also asks if the other Lansdowne Lagonda, the 1949 2.6 litre DHC, can also be issued with with the hood up. ‘The chrome landau irons on the sides of the hood look particularly attractive’. Food for thought at the Bath factory...

Club News
Collated by Rod Ward

Wessex Smalltalk, the publication of the Wessex Model and Toy Collectors, has reached its 25th anniversary, a special issue recalling past glories with lots of colour illustrations. The Natal Diecast Model Collectors newsletter continues in publication, slim, but still alive, though contributions of members are few and far between. Wheel Nuts, the South Hants Model Auto Club magazine, is well-packed as ever, and includes more news of the peregrinations of its membership. This time they have been to Silverstone, Poole, Waterlooville, Basingstoke, Prescott hill-climb, Malta and Romsey signal box. The Maidenhead Static Model Club monthly newsletter. Wheel Bearings reports on a Clubnight where they were entertained by old friend of MAR and Citroenist par excellence, David Conway. The Clubnight competition was, suitably, devoted to Citroens, and was won by John Garside’s display of Jouets Citroens. Will Roe, distinguished El Presidente of the Coventry Diecast Model Club asked me, ‘I notice in the Club News that there is no mention of CDMC now. Can I ask if you don't receive a copy now of our Wheelspin magazine? I am back in the editing chair but I don't deal with the distribution’. My reply was that I mention CDMC when I get Wheelspin, sometimes it misses a copy date, or I get two CDMC mags in the run of producing one MAR. Will has now obviously solved the problem; I now have two copies of Wheelspin to hand, and very interesting they are too

THE BUS MARKET

The most frequent comment we hear from bus collectors is that 1:76 diecast buses are getting expensive; much dearer than most 1:43 diecast cars of around the same size. Collectors realise, however, that markets are shrinking as the age profile rises, and that most of the best-selling subjects have now been done, so quantities are now smaller and prices correspondingly higher. Production problems in China also interfere with release programmes for firms such as EFE.

Maybe we need to attract more new collectors to the scene? With this in mind we have been aware for some time that Atlas Editions wanted to produce a 1:76 bus partwork. Rather than commission entirely new castings they have ‘borrowed’ Corgi Original Omnibus tooling to produce a range of 30 bus subjects for the UK market at a lower spec level. They cost £14.99 each (the first model is at a £1.99 ‘taster’ price). Partworks engender some market growth, but they can give new collectors a false idea of ‘normal’ retail prices outside the partwork arena. We hope this project breathes new life into the bus market.
