IN SYMPATHY

All readers of Model Auto Review around the world will want to join us in extending our sympathy to all our friends in the United States of America, after the horrifying and tragic events of 11 September 2001. The appalling loss of lfe is beyond our comprehension. The thousands of innocent victims include people from three dozen nations, including many hundreds of British citizens, and selflessly heroic New York emergency service workers. We hope that the perpetrators of this outrage are brought to justice.

If no other lesson is learned in the 21st Century, we must all fervently hope that it will be finally realised that there can be no justification for killing civilians, just because you disagree with the policies or actions of their political leaders.

THEY ONLY WANT SCHUMI!

Our sincere congratulations go to Michael Schumacher on attaining the 2001 Formula One Drivers World Championship in Hungary with four races still to go (and beating Alain Prost’s record of 51 Grand Prix wins at the following race at Spa). We also congratulate Ferrari on winning the Constructor’s Championship at the same time, with the assistance of Schumacher’s team-mate Rubens Barrichello. No doubt this will lead to more Schumi fervour and to demand for more memorabilia, including model Ferraris bearing his name. This may go some way to explain Ferrari’s single-minded protection of their brand name, excluding most model and toy companies from making their cars in miniature. They obviously have a top World brand in the Ferrari name, and Michael has a top brand in his own name. Spare a thought, therefore, for whoever has the thankless task of driving in the same team as Schumi. Take a look on the shelves of any model shop or wholesale distributor. There is a big empty space where models of Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari should be. Yet, alongside, there are still plenty of unsold models of Rubino’s identical car (and still probably a pile of Eddie Irvine’s Ferraris from previous years). So, maybe it’s not Ferraris that are so desirable after all, but only those driven by Michael. Does that give pause for thought to those who have so expensively committed themselves to a contract to make or sell Ferrari model cars?

CORGI IN FAVOUR OF RECYCLING

It has already been noted in these pages that one of the new series Corgi are pushing this year is a range of film and television spin-off models, some of them recycled earlier products which readers of MAR will remember well from the 1980s.

To launch this ‘new’ product line, Corgi’s PR folk came up with a wizard wheeze, to send out a seven inch 45 rpm record from 1982 to give journalists a taste for the period, to be followed by a ‘jolly’ in September at Freedom Brewery Co, Covent Garden, London, to be shown A Team, Knight Rider, Dukes of Hazzard, Back to the Future and other Corgi merchandise in the new range. No, I didn’t go, as it seemed a bit of a waste of a long day, and an expensive train ticket to London, just to see again models I’ve mostly seen before. It meant missing out on the free booze and snacks, but we have to make some sacrifices. No doubt, however, media folk (especially from non-specialist publications) based in the capital will have willingly made their way to Covent Garden for a free lunch, with some 1980s pop music playing in the background.

I know that MAR readers are always interested whenever we mention popular music relevant to our subject matter and at least I had the seven-incher in my hand (the disc, silly!) which might possibly find a place in my 1956 Wurlitzer Centennial jukebox. So what was the record? There were many interesting and original songs in the singles charts during that decade. The era included everything from Imagine by John Lennon down to 99 Red (or Luft) Balloons by Nena, so there must have been lots to choose from.

Yes, yes, but what was the record? Iko Iko by Natasha. Who? Indeed, Natasha did get to number ten with this record in Britain in June 1982, but it was a cover version of a (much better?) original of Iko Iko by the Dixie Cups, which reached number 23 in May 1965. It is a pity Corgi couldn’t find an actual 1980s pop song to go with their 1980s collection, just a recycled sixties song. They could have chosen I Got You Babe by UB40 with Chrissie Hynde. Oh no, that was a cover of Sonny and Cher’s 1965 chart topper. Well, how about Dancing in the Street by Bowie and Jagger? Nope, originally by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas in 1964. How about Spirit In The Sky - Dr and the Medics? No, Norman Greenbaum did it first in 1970. Or It’s My Party by Dave Stewart and Barbara Gaskin? Originally Lesley Gore in 1963, of course. I could go on, but I won’t, as it may give the untrue impression that nothing original was recorded in the 1980s, which might have made it forgiveable for Corgi to choose a recycled 1960s song to represent the 1980s. There was much of interest and quality in a decade of music which might have been chosen to epitomise the era. But perhaps Corgi are equally in favour of recycling old pop songs, as well as old castings?

LOTS OF CONTRIBUTIONS

Thanks to all who responded to my Editorial concerning contributions to MAR. Yes, we did get some much-appreciated input from England, but just to move the goalposts again, I received even more contributions from other countries!

St PETERSBURG By Leonid Khoykhin

The latest news from St Petersburg Tram Collection:

The1:48 Pacific Electric PCC model is released now (161). In November 1939, California Public Utilities Commission ordered Pacific Electric to restore the rail service on the Glendale-Burbank line with PCC cars. In February 1940 30 double ended cars were ordered from Pullman-Standard, all with a new Westinghouse multiple control system that would allow them to be coupled into trains. 17 cars went into service on the Glendale-Burbank line in November 1940 and in the following January, the other thirteen started running on the Venice Short Line. Because of the poor track on the latter line, all cars were assigned to Glendale-Burbank, where they ran until abandonment in 1956. From July 1952, all cars were freshened at PE’s main Torrance shops complex. After three years of storage in the subway, all 30 cars were sold to General Urquiza Railway in Buenos Aires, Argentina. None was preserved. For more info, contact St Petersburg Tram Collection, PO Box no 16, 196158 St Petersburg, Russia, Fax +7 (812) 164 5254, email sptc@sp.ru

CLUB NEWS

South Hants Model Auto Club: The revamped SHMAC magazine has now steadied at 16 well-packed A5 pages, and the Editors are fairly sure they can keep up that level, but they also feel that they are not likely to attain the Coventry Club’s 52 page achievements. One may doubt if any successor to the present Editor at Coventry will manage the same prodigious output in future. In the 16 pages of the latest SHMAC magazine are accounts of trips, visits, the club barbecue, exhibitions, Rod Fox’s 60th birthday present (motor racing at Thruxton), and lots more, including some passing references to model cars. It is noted that Rod Fox won the Model Auto Review competition for the CMC 1:18 Auto Union, to the envy of other members. All you have to do is enter the competitions, chaps! Then you'll stand an equal chance of winning. Oh look, we have a few SHMAC names in the current pile of entries! That’s the way! If you are in the South Hampshire area (or even if you are not) and would like details of club membership, contact secretary Dave Painter (Porsche fan) on 01264 366408.

Lansdowne Collectors Club: On a similar competitive theme, Graham Burton, of Poole, Dorset, writes to tell us of a recent experience. He joined the Lansdowne Club in January, after seeing it mentioned in MAR and soon saw a competition in the Club magazine, which he entered. ‘Guess what?’ he says, ‘Out of 100 members, I was the only one who entered, so I won a great prize, a Lansdowne MG YA in black’. The moral is, if you see a competition, enter it. You never know, you might win. One thing is certain, if you don’t enter, you stand no chance at all!

Wessex Model and Toy Collectors: Barry Lloyd has taken note of our comments that MAR is not mentioned as often as other magazines are, in Smalltalk, the WMTC newsletter. He gives us a glowing crit in the latest issue, so we tender our profound thanks. Another club which Barry mentions is the Plymouth Diecast Club, which we have never mentioned in these pages. How about news from the far south west, chaps? Apparently they have 50 members, and average meetings attract 30 members, but they cannot get sufficient volunteers for the committee, and may have to close down. Maybe if we were able to give them some publicity, they might get more members, including some committee types. Smalltalk is always full of interesting features, and lots of amusing cross-talk between contributors. An interesting aspect of Smalltalk is that articles and features are mostly about full-size vehicles, not model cars (which in fact are rarely mentioned) which shows that this club is for vehicle enthusiasts who happen to collect models. It is often assumed by 'outsiders' (including manufacturers of models) that we are toy collectors who know nothing about vehicles. That is certainly not true of the WMTC. If you would like information on membership, contact Doug Male on 01225 755043.

Ferrari Model Club: The Ferrari Model Club magazine is probably the plushest publication we see from the various clubs around the world. It is A4 size, with full colour cover and 64 pages, it is an impressively professional production. This cuts no ice with Ferrari SpA, however, and they are preventing the FMC from using the prancing horse symbol on the cover of the magazine, in spite of the support and free publicity given to Ferrari by the club. Indeed, Ferrari SpA President Luca Cordera di Montezemolo has written to the club thanking them for their constant and enthusiastic support. What a pity he has no influence over his minions who are in charge of copyrights. We have a suggestion for Dominique Lahuec, FMC supremo, which might get over the problem. An enthusiastic supporter and advertiser is Scuderia Auto Becker, the German Ferrari concessionnaire. His advertisement always legitimately displays the Ferrari prancing horse badge in full colour. How about offering Herr Becker an additional spot on the front cover, where he can legally display the disputed symbol? Everybody gains: the FMC has the Ferrari symbol legitimately on its magazine cover, and Herr Becker gets a bit more advertising space. (Just a suggestion). Dom and his members provide members with an unequalled info-source on Ferraris, full-size as well as scale models. If you would like to have eight club magazines in a year, an annual subscription costs 190DM (Europe) or $115 (elsewhere). Write to FMC, Wotanstrasse 40/3, D-80639 München, Germany.

Sydney Model Auto Club: Friday the thirteenth is certainly a black day for the SMAC. On that day in April, life member Alan Richardson died. He was visiting a friend in hospital when he complained of chest pains, and went immediately to Casualty. In spite of CPR administered by the staff, he passed away at the age of 61, due to unsuspected hardening of the arteries. ‘Richo’ was a colourful character, and ran the Granville Swapmeet on behalf of the Club. As if this loss was not enough, on Friday 13 July, SMAC Treasurer David Robson suddenly died at the age of 66, ‘a lovely man’. We are all becoming more aware of our mortality, as the ranks of collectors are thinning fast, but this has been a particular shock for the Sydney Club, losing two of its leading lights in such a short period. It will be difficult to replace them, particularly as there are fewer new collectors coming from younger generations, though it is nice to note that Alan’s son Scott is a Club member, who assisted in the operation of the swapmeet. If you would like to help fill the spaces in the Sydney Club, contact John Maude, 59 Walter Street, Mondale, NSW 2223, Australia. 1/87 Vehicle Club: Wayne Calder is making great strides (note for Australian readers: that doesn’t mean nice trousers) transforming the club newsletter into a glossy magazine. 40 pages, almost as big as A4 (the USA is still not using ISO paper sizes), are packed with news, information and thematic articles. Issue 14 covered step-through vans, concept cars, F1, boats, ships, airport equipment, Eastbloc cars and chops. If you’d like to join the club, $20.00 membership gets three magazines per year, among other benefits. Write to: 102 Plymouth Park S/C Box 168, Irving, TX 75061, USA.

Jaguar Model Club: The decision to change the frequency of the JMC magazine to quarterly has been called a ‘retrograde step’ by member Julian Soundy, though he understands JMC boss Gary Oxley’s reasons for having to make it. There is never enough time for the labours of love involved in producing unpaid club publications. An ongoing problem is persuading existing members of any club to renew their subscriptions, so Julian suggests that Gary adopt MAR’s practice of automatically renewing credit card subscriptions, unless you actually cancel the subscription. Gary, who like Julian is an MAR subscriber, has noted our methodology and would like to follow the same principles in the JMC magazine. Let's hope it helps to keep members on board. Annual UK membership only costs £24.00. Contact Gary at JMC, 11 Birchwood Drive, Ravenfield, Rotherham S65 4PT, UK.

Citroen Model & Memorabilia Collectors Club: Snail mail despatch of CMMCC newsletters only continued until current subscriptions ran out. >From now on, the newsletter will only be sent by email, but will also then be free of charge. David Conway continues to report in detail on all new model Citroen models, an invaluable aid for fans of the Double Chevron in miniature. As future contact will only be via email, there is no point in contacting David if you do not have an email address. Therefore, please get in touch withthe Citroen Model & Memorabilia Collectors Club at ConwayCV2@bigfoot.com

Volkswagen Model Club: For the first time in many years, Jim McLachlan had a struggle to fill the VWMC magazine, due to lack of input from members. After considering postponing the August quarterly issue, Jim instead decided to publish a slightly thinner issue than usual, the ‘smallest for some time’ as Jim puts it. There is no shortage of news regarding new VW models, just a dearth of feature articles and photographs from members. Let’s hope this will sting them into producing lots of contributions for the November 2001 and February 2002 magazines. In spite of Jim’s troubles, he still managed to fill 14 pages with news of Volkswagen models, plus a page of colour photos. Maybe there will be a big influx of new members in future if the long-rumoured plan matures for VW to participate in Formula One. If you would like to join the VW Model Club and help to fill the magazine pages, write to Jim at 20 Waverley Park, Redding, Falkirk FK2 9RT, Scotland.

Maidenhead Static Model Club: Another club publication that had a slightly thinner issue than usual was Wheel Bearings, the MSMC newsletter. This was due to Editor Bill Alexander trying to upgrade his computer. The usual story of incompatibility, salesman’s double-speak and general technobabble put Bill’s computer out of service just as he was due to produce Wheel Bearings, then when it was finally ready, he could not connect to his scanner, so he couldn’t produce illustrations. It is to be hoped that all is back in action for the next issue, so that all the contributions from MSMC members can be incorporated into a bulging, bulky Wheel Bearings. If you'd like to join the MSMC (we are told there is no longer a ‘waiting list’ for membership), contact Alan Simpson on 01494 813903.

New for 2001 from new mould:: 28000 Auto Union 1000S Coupe 1959-1963
The Auto Union automobile works, in southern Saxony, which came from the 1932 union of Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer, was completely lost after the Second World War. Saxony was occupied by the Soviets, but the owners of the company had escaped into West Germany. Here the designers had to make a fresh start. This was difficult enough, but they were also aware of competition from their former plants, now run by the Soviets, still making the pre-war F8. A former Auto Union warehouse in Ingolstadt, Bavaria became the headquarters of the new Auto Union, where from 1949 DKW motorcycles and a newly developed DKW van were produced. Production of a DKW car began in a former munitions factory. It was almost identical with the pre-war F9, which was itself built at Zwickau and then at Eisenach as the IFA F9. This DKW 3=6, (meaning a three cylinder two-stroke engine which was as good as a four stroke six-cylinder engine), developed into the Auto Union 1000 in 1960, with a stylish wrap-round windscreen. This 1960-1963 version is the prototype of the new Brekina model, which reproduces it very exactly, with chromed bumpers, and grille, and silver printed mouldings. It is available in white-red, white-gentian blue and olive green-lime green.

MORE AUTO MODELS

All MAR readers will know that we don't as a rule print news items aboutdealers and their shops, but here is a pleasing exception. Regular MARadvertiser Auto Models of Bicester opened a new branch in The Centre,Milton Keynes, on 28 July 2001. This is a heartening development at atime when we more usually hear stories about shops closing, or unable toafford the high costs of operating in shopping malls. The Centre is openseven days a week, late nights on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The newshop is a Corgi Gold Star stockist, and a Matchbox Collector Centre. Andthey are now MAR stockists as well!

MAISTO 1:18 MODELS By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Maisto of Thailand recently released these 1:18 models in the SpecialEdition Range:

Opel Speedster 2000
The Speedster's total weight of only 870 kg is achieved by extrudedaluminium profiles which form the chassis, weighing only 71kg and makingit very resistant to torsion. The bodywork, styled with the new 'edgy'Opel theme, is made of ultra-light rust-free fibre laminate. The newrear mounted 2.2 litre 16v 147hp Ecotec four cylinder engine allows 0 to100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and a maximum speed of 217 km/h. The technologywas developed by Lotus UK, where the car will be built in a strictlylimited small series with much attention to detail. It is also availableas Vauxhall VX 220, with a different grille and the steering wheel onthe right. Maisto have reproduced Opel's design well. The Mandarin body(two coats of mineral-effect paint in mandarin orange) looks veryrealistic, all the correct details are there, including the four glazedlight units, air intake and outlet grilles, all emblems and the twinexhaust tail pipes, which are vertical, just like the real car. Thelicense plates represent a real registration of an Opel-owned car, inRüsselsheim. Front lid, doors and bonnet all open. The steering andsuspension work realistically. There is no space for luggage under thefront lid. The small space is completely filled with the radiator, battery and bottles for brake fluid, power steering and screenwashfluid, all accurately reproduced in the model. The interior features theextraordinary aluminium detailing. The dashboard looks like theoriginal, as do the seats, and even the safety belts and locks aremodelled. The leather-like black surfaces make an interesting contrastwith the silver-coloured aluminium framing. Only the old fashioned andunrealistic door hinges are a fly in the otherwise excellent Maistoointment. Under the bonnet is a detailed engine replica, and behind theseats is a tiny luggage space, just room for two toilet bags, a vanitycase and some sun cream. The wheels are exactly modelled, and throughthe spokes the brake discs and calipers are clearly visible. Thebaseplate looks plain, but this is just like the real car, which has avery smooth under surface, with diffusers for better roadholding. Opelis trying to polish up its public image with this sports car, andMaisto's model car may help the effort.

Chevrolet SSR Concept Car 2000
The SSR was first revealed to the public at the Detroit Auto Show in2000, demonstrating a combination of different body concepts, and itstands a good chance of mass production. The SSR is like a Swiss army knife on wheels, combining sports car, truck and cabriolet in one vehicle. At the touch of a button the hardtop over the cab disappears behind the seats, in front of the load bed, which, unlike usual pickup practice, is in unit with the body. The separate-wing styling includes obvious 'nostalgic' elements, but thechassis and the six litre 300hp V8 engine come from the Corvette, and afour-speed automatic gearbox drives the rear axle. Maisto's model is thesame blue colour as the Detroit show vehicle, and its interesting designis reproduced very well. In the cab, all black and chrome, the dashboardinstruments are clearly visible. The bonnet and doors open, thesuspension and steering work realistically. Under the bonnet is acompletely enclosed engine, typical of show car design, alsocharacterised by high gloss chrome wheel rims, through the spokes ofwhich can be seen the brake discs and calipers. The baseplate is welldetailed, but the high gloss chromed exhaust system looks a littleunrealistic.

Chrysler Panel Cruiser 2000
The Chrysler Panel Cruiser was also launched at the 2000 Detroit AutoShow, a variation of the PT Cruiser with a van body. Once again thereal car has been interpreted accurately in Maisto's model, like theDetroit show car, painted medium blue. The bonnet and the three doorsall open, the suspension and steering both function. Under the bonnet isan adequately detailed engine. The interior is well detailed, even thenumbers on the automatic gearbox selector. All lights and many otherdetails are separate components, and the wheel rims are accurate copiesof those on the Detroit show car. The load floor has a wood-like finish.Unfortunately the side doors open in an unrealistic manner, revealingdrainpipe-sized hinges. A well detailed baseplate is spoiled by theentirely high gloss chromed exhaust system, which also shows obvioustool-markings from the mould.

Jaguar X-Type Saloon 2001
Exciting, fascinating, forceful, attractive and with innovative ideas, the new X-Type is a Jaguar in a compact format. This agile sports saloonis available with 2.5 or 3.0 litre V6 engines, four overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, four wheel drive as standard, and manual orautomatic gear boxes, both five speed. The platinum metallic body of theMaisto model is exactly shaped and the lights, radiator grille and manymore elements are separate components. The bonnet, front doors and bootlid all open, and the suspension and steering work realistically. Theivory interior looks authentic, the dashboard with all instruments andswitches has wood applications. Under the bonnet is a detailed engine.Wheel rims and tyres are very good copies of the originals, as is thebaseplate, though the too-glossy exhaust system looks unlikely. On theboot lid we can read that the model car has a three litre engine. Thefirst batch of the model was supplied to Jaguar dealers, but now it ison general distribution.

Mini Cooper 2001
Now the new Mini appears in its production version, the only survivor ofthe BMW Group's British adventure. The new Mini is larger than the oldone, but reflects the design of the original, whilst complying withcurrent car safety regulations. The interior is more roomy andcomfortable, and contrary to some reports, the roadholding andgo-kart-like performance is still there. The red body with white roof ofthe model car represents the car as seen in BMW adverts in motormagazines. All features of the Mini Cooper version are reproduced, including its Munich registration The bonnet, doors and tailgate allopen. The suspension and steering work realistically. The black and greyseats complement the aluminium-like dashboard and door fittings. A largecentral speedometer dominates the dashboard, a rev counter is above thesteering wheel and the central console is very detailed. The engine isdetailed, but the doors have old-fashioned hinges. The wheel rims andtyres are accurate, with brake discs and calipers visible through thespokes. The baseplate is detailed, but I doubt that BMW fit high-glosschromed exhaust systems to the new Mini.

Also new from Maisto in their GT Racing Range is: Audi R8 Le Mans-Winner 2000. In the 2000 Le Mans race Audi's driversreached the finishing line without difficulty and celebrated a triplevictory with their R8 sports cars, which ran like clockwork. apart fromfilling with petrol, and changing tyres and drivers, no other work wasnecessary. The winning car, number 8 is excellently reproduced byMaisto, in silver and red, with all its sponsor stickers. The cockpitincludes its carbon fibre structure, all switches and instruments, andthe driver's seat with full harness. The air intake behind the seatbears the names of victorious drivers Biela (Germany), Pirro (ltaly) andKristensen (Denmark). The rear engine cover can be removed to reveal awell detailed engine replica. The steering and suspension workrealistically. The baseplate only features some spoilers, but this isalso authentic, as the real under-floor is smooth for good roadholding, with some spoilers to increase local pressure. The cast aluminium wheelrims are shaped very finely, also like the real car.

All these Maisto model cars are available from local dealers, but if indifficulty, contact the German importer Heinrich Bauer, Hans BunteStrasse 2; D-90431 Nürnberg, Germany (Tel: 0911 324520, Fax: 0911 3245245)

MORE BMW MODELS By Hans-Georg Schmitt

News from Bavaria of more BMW model cars:

BMW 328 Le Mans 1939 1:43 scale diecast by Schuco. In June 1939 astreamlined coupe and two cabriolets took part in the legendary 24 hourrace in Le Mans. The coupe covered 3188,4 km to gain fifth placeoverall, and all three cars finished. For the first time in the 16 yearsof the race, all the cars of one team had reached the finish. Schucohave modelled one of the victorious cabriolets, driven by Briem andScholz. The ivory body carries the correct number 28, and the licenseplates have the right registration numbers. The revolution counter andspeedometer even have their needles. The radiator grille incorporatingthe third headlight and the two bonnet-side outlets are very wellphotoetched. The bonnet is secured by two tiny thin leather-like straps. This model car comes in the usual black folding plastic box, which turnsinto a display stand. It is available from BMW dealers, as order number80420024360. (See page 7972).

BMW 2002 tii saloon 1971-1975, made in 1:18 scale by Kyosho: This bodystyle was first shown to the public at the Geneva Motor Show in March1966. It was a small two door-saloon, which looked a bit like a coupe. The 02 range found enthusiastic customers, who liked its performance, sporting character and in particular the restraint of this small salooncar. In February 1971 the 2002 tii appeared, with a 1990cc four cylinderpetrol injection engine developing 130 hp at 5800 rpm, and four speed(or optional five speed) gearbox, good for a top speed of 190 km/h. Themodel car is shaped accurately, the bonnet, doors and boot lid all open, and the steering works realistically. Many features are separate parts, the badging and license plate are exact. Under the open bonnet is anoutstanding engine replica, with well detailed block, fuel injectionapparatus, distributor with all ignition cables, all hoses betweenengine and radiator, screen wash reservoir, brake fluid reservoir, nothing is missing. All stickers and type plates are included, even plusand minus on top of the battery! Also excellently shown is thecomplicated lock system for the bonnet. The interior looks quite stark, typical of its time. All features are realistically modelled. The doors, which open like the real car, are fitted with arm rests, handles andwinders. The three instruments even show dials and needles. In the boot, the floor can be removed, to reveal the spare wheel and jack. The wheelslook like aluminium cast rims with well-detailed tyres. The baseplate isunbelievably detailed, the lower side of engine and gearbox, exhaustsystem, suspension, nothing is forgotten and all four springs workauthentically. As reference 80430007658, the model car is available inorange with black interior, or as ref 80430007659 it is available inmetallic blue body, also with a black interior.

BMW 2002 turbo two door saloon 1973-1974, made in 1:18 scale by Kyosho. In the 1970s Germany had a booming economy. In 1972 the Olympic Gamescame to Munich with its tragic consequences, and in 1974 Germany hostedthe soccer World Cup. And when Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller and PaulBreitner lifted the celebrated trophy aloft as world champions, thesports world was turned upside down. Into this dynamic period the BMW2002 turbo was launched, the first production car with a turbocharger,as agile as it was exciting. Lightning fast, powerful and beautifullydesigned, it won every heart. The top Bavarian sports saloon is now amuch sought-after collectors' piece. Kyosho have captured the spirit andthe appearance of the original in this model car, which is as accuratelydetailed as the 2002 tii described above. The differences in the enginecompartment can be clearly seen. Available from BMW dealers, as ref80430026610.

Kyosho have done a splendid job on both model cars, which will behighlights in every BMW collection.

Editor's Note: When we bought our BMW 2002 of fond memory (apart fromits troublesome automatic choke and rust-prone underbody) we wereinterested to hear that the mechanic who had prepared it for sale owneda 2002 turbo. He didn't seem very happy when we asked him about it.Apparently the previous weekend he was teaching his girl friend to driveon this rather unsuitable beast, in the wide open spaces of Southportbeach, on miles of open flat sand. She was getting up a fair level ofconfidence, and turn of speed, when he noticed that they wereapproaching some sand dunes. He asked her to brake, but she stamped onthe wrong pedal and accelerated over the dunes. Fortunately they wereonly slightly injured on landing, but the car was a write-off.

JOHNNY LIGHTNING By John Whitehead

The two latest 1:64 Johnny Lightnings seen here in the USA are these:

Johnny Lightning 291-08 (785) 1971 Plymouth 440 Hemi Cuda ConvertibleThe Plymouth is probably the best model I have seen among 1:64 JohnnyLightning releases. This company has made great strides in just a few ofyears. A release from 1998 or 1999 seems so primitive and inaccuratethat one would imagine the older toy was from a completely differentcompany.

Johnny Lightning 362-20 (146) 1950 Mercury (woody) Station WagonThe Mercury is part of a set vehicles which were used in televisionshows. The 1960s television show 'Mod Squad' is cited as the source forthe station wagon.
