Model Auto Review News Archive

22nd May 1999

CONSOLIDATION CONTINUES

Following the acquisition of Minichamps by Action Performance, and of Bburago, Matchbox and other companies by Mattel, US diecast model interest continues with the takeover of Ertl by Racing Champions. This now gives Racing Champions a foothold in many aspects of the diecast vehicle business, including NASCAR, custom cars, trucks and agricultural items. In what looks like a complete about-turn in attitude, major US corporations now see diecast models as an important market sector in which it is important to have a share. For decades US toy companies concentrated investment in high-tech products, neglecting and even abandoning their diecast model subsidiaries. Now there is a rush to grab a share before the plums all fall into competitors' laps. There are often-repeated rumours of a British range of 1:43 diecast cars being acquired by a competitor, which if true carries consolidation further.

EIGHT WEEKS TO WAIT

Once again I have to break to you gently the news that the next MAR will not be published in five weeks time, as usual, but you have to wait eight weeks fot MAR 134. As well as taking our annual two weeks holiday, this time will be spent producing MAR 134, avia mini viii, and the second volume of Fred Käsmann's Land Speed Record History. In addition I expect to be visiting some continental suppliers and stockists, and working on our other future projects.

SEE MAR ON THE WEB

Just a reminder that we are on the World Wide Web on the Internet, where we have been for almost three years. On www.toyz.co.uk are news items from the latest MAR, plus current competition questions, and answers to the previous competition. There is also a useful archive of previously featured news items. On www.modelauto.co.uk is the Modelauto site of models for sale, etc. This is where the MAR news used to be, but now this site is reserved for commercial purchases, which can be easily carried out by email. There will be more changes to our Internet operation soon. Watch this space!

Please note: our offices will be closed from Saturday 19 June to Sunday 4 July. Last day open Friday 18 June, re-open on Monday 5 July. You can send mail or email during that time. Our fax and 24 hour voicemail machines will be available throughout the period we are closed, and all messages will be dealt with in order, when we re-open.

St Petersburg News

By Leonid Khoykhin
Here are the latest releases from St Petersburg Tram Collection of Russia:

TRAMS

The famous Copenhagen Lunding tram is released now (123, ltd edition of 50). In 1930 Copenhagen Tramways (KS) added the first tramcars of a new series called after their designer, the architect Ib Lunding. They were very successful, staying in service until the end of Copenhagen tram operation on 22 April 1972. The cars were built in two series; power cars 502-531 and trailers 1502-1531 from 1930 to 1938 and later power cars 532-618 and trailers 1532-1583 from 1939 to 1942 After the Second World War all cars were rebuilt for the pay as you enter system. Another new tram model is a Chicago Green Hornet PCC, by St Louis Car Co 1947-48, available in two paint schemes, original mercury green (165, Itd edition of 100) and everglades green of the 1950s (165a, ltd edition of 50), both 1:48 scale. Chicago ordered 600 50 foot PCCs from St Louis Car Co (290) and Pullman-Standard (310) in 1945, delivered in 1946 and 1948, arranged for two-man operation. >From 1953 to 1958 570 PCCs of this batch were sold to St Louis Car Co for rebuilding as PCC-type rapid transit cars. Street car operation in Chicago ended in summer 1958. Only car 4391 is preserved in Illinois Railway Museum

TROLLEYBUSES

Our next Chicago trolleybus is a 1948 ACF-Brill T-44 (168, Ltd edition of 80). Production of the new-look ACF-Brill trolleybuses began at Canadian Car & Foundry under license in 1946 but US operators continued to buy the old TC-44 model until July 1948. In May 1948 Chicago Transit Authority received the first 30 vehicles of the new design and 90 more were delivered between August and November that year This batch, 203-322, later renumbered to 9203-9322, was the largest in the CTA trolleybus fleet until 1952 when 349 Marmons arrived in Chicago. The last Brills were withdrawn in 1970.

BUSES

Our first Turin model is a 1975 Fiat 421AL bus with Cameri body (223, ltd edition of 50). These buses were the cornerstone of the Turin bus fleet in the 1980s and early 1990s and 164 buses of this class are still in service in Turin. Twin Coach Model 40 and ACF H-17S buses are available now also in United Electric Ry (Providence) livery. BOOK REVIEW

AUTOMODELLI BBURAGO 1974-1998 By Paolo Rampini, Pub: Rampini A4 hardbound 112 pages, English and Italian text. Price in UK £55.00.

We are now familiar with the typical Rampini layout (50 pages of description and listings, 60 pages of colour illustrations) from Paolo's remarkable and indispensible series of model car books. Now Bburago gets the treatment, from its origins in Martoys in 1974 to its present pre-eminent position in the market. As always, it is the large and clear photographs which enable us to check the detailed differences in the hundreds of models pictured. There are standard issues, rare promotionals and unusual liveries, in all the many Bburago series and scales from 1:14 to 1:87. If you already have one of Paolo's books on your shelf you won't have to be told how good this volume is. If you haven't seen a Rampini book, and you are a Bburago fan, just accept that you'll have to buy this excellent work of reference. RCW

MATTEL LINK-UPS

Mattel Inc's Hot Wheels brand has signed a 'multi-year strategic licensing alliance' with McLaren to create, manufacture and market McLaren racing cars, including diecast vehicles. 'Mattel produces outstanding children's products and boasts a portfolio of brands which are household names,' said Ron Dennis, Managing Director of the TAG McLaren Group. 'It is appropriate that a company with such an acknowledged reputation will produce a range of products in respect of our cars.' The McLaren replicas will be added to the extensive F1 product line that Hot Wheels will introduce in Autumn 1999, including other F1 teams Ferrari, Williams, Jordan and Stewart.

Mattel also signed a 'worldwide strategic licensing alliance' with EMAP Petersen, the leading special interest magazine company in the USA. Mattel products will relate to Petersen magazines Hot Rod, Motor Trend, 26 other auto publications aand Teen magazine. 'Co-branded' products will appear as Hot Rod/Hot Wheels and Motor Trend/ Matchbox brands, including diecast vehicles in various scales. The licensing agreement will include joint promotions and special events. 'Petersen represents a unique marketplace of more than 22 million hands-on auto enthusiasts who cannot be reached by any other combination of magazines', said Matt Bousquette, President of Boys/Entertainment business unit at Mattel. 'Hot Rod and Hot Wheels are two powerful American brands', adds Justin McCormack, President of Petersen Enterprises. 'By packaging the history and credibility of Petersen magazines with the quality of Mattel products, we have an unstoppable combination.' EMAP Petersen, Inc is a wholly owned subsidiary of EMAP plc of the UK, one of the world's largest magazine publishing companies, but strangely there isn't a model car magazine among EMAP's 603 titles.

CAROUSEL 1 WATSON

By Wayne E Moyer

The second release in the Carousel 1 series of vintage Indy 500 winners is a beautifully done and highly detailed 1:18 scale diecast model of the 'Ken-Paul Special' Watson roadster that Jim Rathman drove to win the 1960 Indianapolis 500. While the front-engined Watsons were relatively ancient technology in comparison to the rear engine cars that replaced them, they were well-suited to American oval track racing as it existed BL. (Before Lotus). The chassis, constructed from large-diameter tubes, was simple enough to be constructed on a garage floor, but it was strong and could be easily repaired after an encounter with the wall, something that could not be said of its successor. The bodywork also possessed a simplicity and cleanness of line that has not been seen since the advent of 'aero-dynamics'. Carousel 1 has captured all of these attributes with this superb miniature. The multi-piece diecast body has no mould lines or other blemishes, and its metallic blue finish is smooth and glossy; just right for this period when race cars were painted with standard automotive paints, not today's catalysed super-glossy chemical wonders. All the race graphics and the multitude of multi-coloured sponsors' decals are hot-printed onto the body so there is no decal film and everything is perfectly aligned and in register.

The first model in the series was Foyt's 1961 winner, and Carousel 1 has changed the windscreen, oil tank, exhaust system, and wheels to reproduce Rathman's car precisely. The multi-piece body will allow additional changes to the nose and turtle-deck required for the forthcoming 1962 and 1963 winners, too. Sharp-eyed readers will notice, in the colour centre pages, that this model is a very different shade of blue than that usually seen in photos and on the SMTS 1:43 scale model. After a lot of digging through reference books, I found that contemporary reports referred to Rathman's 'light blue' Indy winner. And Indy 500 authority Bob Clidinst specified 'the lighter blue current Chevrolet metallic blue' when he drew the plans. There are two 1960 Chevrolet metallic blue colours, and Carousel's model matches the lighter, Horizon Blue, perfectly. Give them full marks for research.

Opening the piano-hinged hood displays a very nicely done bare-metal Offenhauser engine complete with machined carburettor intake trumpets, plated exhaust system, magneto, spark plug wires, and coolant pipes. Also visible are the radiator, steering assembly, and the chassis frame tubes. The chassis tubes, by the way, carry back through the rather stark (but accurately so) cockpit. The transmission and driveshaft are visible, too, correctly offset to the driver's left, along with the pedals and a beautifully detailed set of instruments. The vinyl 'upholstery' is perhaps a bit too shiny and I had to glue the plastic seat belt down to keep it from standing proud of the seat, but both of these are quite simple fixes. Suspension details match drawings quite well, as do the overall body lines and other details. The textured Halibrand wheels are especially nice and the Firestone sidewall logos are very delicately printed on the authentic-looking tyres. All in all, Carousel 1's 1960 Watson roadster is a very accurate, well-made miniature with all the detail one could ask for in this price range. At $99.95 it's a bargain!

UT DIECAST MODELS

Now that the UT range of diecast models from Hong Kong has its own separate existence from Paul's Model art and Minichamps, under whose wing it started life, perhaps it is time to publish a full roundup of all UT production.

BOOK REVIEWS

NHS AMBULANCES: First 25 Years 1948-73. By Chris Batten. Pub: Trans-Pennine Pub-lishing Ltd. 48 pages 210 x 200mm land-scape softbound. ISBN 0-9521070-3-1. £5.99. Chris Batten is familiar to MAR readers as an expert in ambulances, full-size and scale models. Here he describes the ambulances in service when the National Health Service was created in 1948 in Britain, and their development up to 1973. There was no standardisation, and little consistency in the designs ordered by the authorities operating ambulances, so it is a story of patchwork development and blind alleys. Such 'standardisation' as eventually appeared was more due to manufacturers' efforts than to any central control or consultation. This has always made it difficult for toy or model makers to include British ambulances in their ranges, as bodywork styles, liveries and fittings were very localised and might not sell on a countrywide basis. Even Dinky's famous Daimler DC27 ambulance was not widespread in service. Only 499 were built,of which 222 went to London. One of the most popular ambulances of the 1960s was the Bedford J-Lomas was, however, made by Matchbox. Chris gathers together the many loose ends of this story, and illustrates it with over 100 fascinating photographs. It will be a valuable reference work for all ambulance fans. It is worth noting that this book was originally published in 1998, but printers' faults resulted in its withdrawal and relacement by this revised version. RCW

DURHAM COUNTY AMBULANCE:

Fifty Years of Service. By Mike Leonard. Pub: Trans-Pennine Publishing Ltd. 48 pages 210 x 200mm landscape softbound. ISBN 0-9521070-3-1. £5.99. Focussing on a smaller field than Chris Batten's book, this volume describes the ambulance service of a local area, Durham, from NHS formation in 1948, to 1999, when Durham merged with Northumbria into the North East Ambulance Service NHS Trust (they need especially long ambulances for the name). A foreword by Prime Minister Tony Blair, whose constituency is in County Durham, begins the book, which describes the history of all aspects of the service, not just the vehicles used. Thus we can track the progress of ambulance operations and thinking over half a century, clearly described by ADO Leonard. National and international influences on ambulance work are nicely mixed with descriptions of local activities and personalities, giving the general reader an insight into this essential emergency service. FAMOUS FLEETS:

London Brick Company. By Bill Aldridge. Pub Trans-Pennine Pub. Ltd. 48 pages, 210 x 200 mm landscape softbound. ISBN 0-9521070-9-0. £5.99. The third book in this format reviewed here, this was originally a Christmas limited edition, but is on general release, now that the publishers have recovered from the total demolition of their premises due to subsidence, flooding and a boiler explosion. All three books are well-produced, though I found the occasional intrusive apostrophe somewhat annoying. Appleby's sub-editor must know that, in English, apostrophes are used for the possessive case, not for plurals. Nowadays even the fruit market rarely refers to apple's. This niggle apart, the LBC book is a good read. The history and processes of brick making are well described, as are the various amalgamations and ownership changes around London Brick. The story of the fleet from early days until the present is well-illustrated with photographs of trucks, buses, plant and buildings, including LBC's extensive landfill operation A very useful and interesting study of a major fleet. AUDI TRADITION

By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Audi AG has a complex and fascinating history, their manufacture of cars and motorcycles stretches back to the 19th century. The 'Auto Union' marques which were originally all based in Saxony, Audi and Horch in Zwickau, Wanderer in Chemnitz Siegmar and DKW in Zschopau, all made a significant contribution to the progress of the automotive industry in Germany. When these four marques merged in 1932 to form Auto Union AG, this was the second largest vehicle company of its day in terms of the quantity built. Four interlinked rings were adopted as its marque emblem. After the Second World War, Auto Union AG's plant in Saxony was expropriated and dismantled by the Soviet occupying forces. A number of senior managers left for Bavaria, where a new company under the name Auto Union GmbH was founded in 1949 in Ingolstadt.

Auto Union GmbH and NSU merged in 1969, forming Audi NSU Auto Union AG, renamed Audi AG in 1985 with headquarters in Ingolstadt. The four rings remain the company emblem to this day, and this year they celebrate their 50th Anniversary in Ingolstadt, so Audi is looking back into its history. A spectacular prelude was a presentation at Techno Classica in Essen, where the new Audi Tradition department appeared for the first time, part of the Public Relations Division under Thomas Frank, who is also manager of the two tradition companies, Auto Union GmbH and NSU GmbH. Many interesting historic cars were presented at Essen, including the Horch 830BL of General De Gaulle from 1947 to 1957. Audi Tradition also has promotional items including the Auto Union type C Avus racing car from 1937 in 1:43 scale, and its transporter, the Büssing-NAG 300 from 1934. Both models are available separately or as an exclusive set, limited to 999 only direct from Auto Union GmbH, Audi Tradition, D-85045 Ingolstadt, Germany.
