LOTS MORE NEWS

This issue contains more news of 2006 releases, to follow the material already published (and there’s loads more to go) but I have also managed to include a lot of articles from our regular contributors, plus a few new ones. Along the way we feature 1:60, 1:76, 1:87 and many larger scales, not just the 1:43 scale with which apparently some folk still solely associate Model Auto Review.

MORE TECHNOLOGY

At the same time that this issue of MAR has been put together I have been wrestling with my new Intel-powered Apple Macintosh Imac computer (on a new-to-me Operating System called Tiger, if anyone cares). For once I am right at the cutting edge with the latest equipment. It is an oustanding bit of kit, but installation been a time-consuming and costly process so far. I have taken the opportunity to redesign some pages as I go along, and hope they are a bit ‘brighter’. All this new technology should allow me to produce further improved results in the future, I hope.

AND EMAIL ADDRESSES

While on techie matters please ensure that you are using the latest email addresses to contact Modelauto or MAR. Only those listed in MAR should be used; see the opposite page or the Modelauto advertising pages. No emails addressed to old out-of use email addresses will arrive here, so please check that your email address book is up to date!

CONGRATS, CATHERINE

Every small firm has an indispensible person, in whose absence business slows down. In the case of French model maker Provence Minatures Automobiles that person is Catherine Gobin. Early this year it became a bit tricky to get email replies from Provence. As Catherine says, ‘It is not easy for a woman to work with men who can’t even manage to switch the computer on. Due to my recent pregnancy I had to rest for a while and could not be at work as usual. I am now very happy to announce the birth of my son Kylian on 20 March, so from now on I will be working from home’. Our congratulations to Catherine and Kylian, and I suggest a computer course for the men of Provence.

OUR COMPETITIONS

A number of readers were touched by the note on page 201.43 of the death of regular competition entrant Brett Cocker. His widow Jeanette has continued to enter the competitions in his memory; you will see her name listed on page 43 of this issue. The local library and piles of encyclopedias used to be called upon by entrants, but now apparently Google is the most popular way to find answers. I have to say that the questions always come off the top of my head, though I check the exact answers in my own library before finalising the competition. The most important factor I have to consider is to ensure that there is no chance of confusion; avoiding more than one possible correct answer, due to a loosely-worded question...

Additions and Corrections

Mr Riad of London points out that the two cars on page 201.30. photo 8 are Peugeot 404s, not 504s as captioned. Dick Browne of Georgia (page 201.16) has now tracked down Liberace’s Cadillac, in Berlin. Another American interested in the German capital is John Whitehead of Wyoming, visiting it with a friend who bought a classic Mercedes. On the subject of car buying, John Pexton, based on the Cote d’Azur, is looking for a suitably rugged right hand drive vehicle to drive overland to his native South Africa. He is prepared to restore and upgrade whatever he buys, at a UK base. Any offers passed on. Lt Col M E F Green asks if we can prevail upon Brooklin-Lansdowne to glaze their headlamps, which now ‘spoil otherwise very good models’. He also criticises Corgi’s Vanguards range for ignoring prewar cars. ‘Norev make 1930s-40s French cars, Ixo are expanding into this field, and Minichamps dabble in it, so what are Vanguards waiting for? There are countless examples of prewar British cars to make. And what happened to the Somerville range under its new owners?’ Sorry, no news on Somerville and unusually, no news from Corgi of new releases in this issue...

MORE FROM THE MARSH By John Simons

After a slow start to the year, Marsh Models now have four new 1:43 releases.

MM124 Cooke Woods Lola T600. This is the car used by Brian Redman to win five races in 1981 to take the IMSA Championship. This is the first of a series of this significant iconic sports car. It is also available as LE27 on a base, signed by Redman. Only 50 produced. MM127 1958 Arciero Ferrari Special. Based on the Ferrari 375, this car featured a shorter wheelbase, Jaguar D Type rear suspension and a Maserati engine. It was driven by many drivers but the car modelled is the Gurney Riverside version. MM134 Crosal Cheetah open version Driven by Ralph Salyer, this is the car in its final form after Gene Crowe removed the roof and changed the bodywork. Although this car has been produced in 1:43 scale before, this is the first time it has been made with the correct colour and decals. MM135 Cro-Sal Cheetah before the roof came off! The most successful of all the Cheetahs, it has not been modelled in this form before.

Soon to come will be MM123 NART Ferrari 512M from Le Mans 1971, the Adamovicz-Posey car that took third place, and finished as the best- placed Ferrari. Also new: MM128 1969 Lola T70 Mk IIIB Sunoco Daytona. We now have the pattern for the new Lola. Due to a misunderstanding, no doubt on my part, Chris did the Gurney T163 and not the Surtees T160. I do have the ability to confuse; mostly myself, but on occasion others. It turned out for the best, as it is easier to convert the Gurney to the Surtees rather than the other way round. So the Gurney version will be allocated MM148. Other versions will include the Sunoco car and two Simoniz versions, with and without the wing. We have been given a magazine by a kind Japanese customer, covering the 1968 CanAm race at Mount Fuji, so we will add the Rodriguez and Al Unser STP versions of the T163, both of which were new to me. Also in the magazine were the winning Revson M6B and the pinstriped Sunoco car (similar to the very first resin M6A we did many years ago). Both of these will be added to our future releases.

DIECAST FORUM
By Dick Browne

I am the moderator at www.diecast.org Forum 43. I would like to invite all MAR readers to look in on us and join in the discussions about 1:43 models. The forum is predominantly on US cars but only because that’s what gets posted; all are welcome. Anyone can read what is on Forum 43 but you must register to post. The instructions are on the website and are quite simple. Those having free email addresses like Hotmail or Yahoo, will need to contact me to get registered. Simply send me an email at dickatl@bellsouth.net and include your full name, location, email address and model car interests. By the way, we think we have now located the Liberace Cadillac on a tip from the Liberace Museum in Las Vegas. It was sold to a private collector in Berlin 11 years ago; we need to follow that trail.

MORE CHANGES AT AIRFIX

Further to the potted history of Airfix on page 18 of MAR 200, it seems that another chapter has opened in the story of this long-established British brand. From now on the Airfix name and company are under the control of some well-known ex-Corgi personalities, so we may expect to see some dramatic changes this year; not just a continuation of the venerable plastic kits (though they will still have their place) and tinlets of Humbrol paint.

EFE NEWS
By Frank Joyce

The week of the Toy Fair we received first shots of the Bristol RELH Coach; they look very good. The first 600 of the 1:24 DMS have been released and we are waiting for the balance of 300 of #99101 to be completed. Future releases will be in smaller quantities, probably 300 each. 99102 features Norbiton, routes 131 Wdays, 131 Sun, 213, 213A and 285, to be followed by garages like Barking, Catford, Holloway, Croydon. Regarding new truck tooling, release of the Thames Trader and AEC Mk V have been held back to coincide with new chassis tooling for a short wheelbase tipper and dropside and articulated versions of our round, oval and elliptical tankers, for release later. The last RM 2217 displaying correct adverts was released at Acton Open day in March. A model was advertised on eBay at a high price, claiming to be the Acton model. It was not E15635; it was still in the print shop, Someone wrote to us accusing our staff of stealing models to sell on eBay: he was very much mistaken. The model being advertised could be one of the special models made for Arriva’s own use, to mark the last day in service of RM2217. It is because this model was not generally available to the public that a similar model of RM 2217, with the revised adverts as actually used on the last day, was created as the Acton Open Day model. We have been asked about a red RF bus on Route 224 to Colnbrook, advertised at £30.00. This model has nothing to do with EFE, it is a Code 3 model, but it is a model that we could consider in the future.

BOOK REVIEWS

DONCASTER (buses) part 3: the Corporation by John Banks, 170mm x 240mm softbound, 64 pages, ISBN 1 905304 03 X. Pub Venture Publications, 128 Pikes Lane, Glossop, Derbyshire SK13 8EH UK £9.50 This third volume from Venture on buses in Doncaster (South Yorkshire) covers the buses operated by the local municipality. From 1902 to 1935 there were trams, and motorbuses were added in 1922. Trolleybuses were also operated from 1928 to 1963, when some of the Roe bodies were fitted to motor buses. For a short while in the 1970s I had an office in Doncaster from which I could see the municipal bus fleet passing, as it changed from traditional red with a white band to a jolly bright red with purple bands which snaked along the lower deck and then climbed above the front door and driver’s window to cross the front of the vehicle across the destination blind. I rather liked the new livery, though in truth it didn’t work as well on single decker buses, and apparently it was not popular with enthusiasts or passengers, but in any case it did not last long, as the fleet disappeared into the South Yorkshire PTA in 1974, and their standardised tan and cream livery took over. The many additional layers of paint applied to buses in that period must have made them exceeed the maximum width regulations. This book tells the story of the Doncaster fleet with over 100 interesting photographs, from trams and Garrett trolleybuses to the last red and purple buses of the 1970s. Rod Ward

BUSES BEYOND BRITAIN by Paul Haywood, 245mm x 175mm hardbound landscape, 80 pages, ISBN 1 905304 08 0. Pub: Venture Publications, 128 Pikes Lane, Glossop, Derbyshire. SK13 8EH UK. £16.95. This book sets out to redress the balance of British bus fleets in the Venture catalogue, by picturing buses from other countries. It does not attempt, however, to be comprehensive, analytical or even to address any one country or fleet in depth. Essentially we are viewing a selection of holiday snaps by Paul Haywood, who, like so many bus fans of my acquaintance, apparently spends his vacation hanging around outside bus depots. The result is an eclectic mix of colour prints of public transport in countries from Australia and Canada to Malaysia and South Africa. Some of the buses are secondhand British double deckers experiencing a new life in a far country, where Lodekkas, Regents and Routemasters turn up in unfamilar liveries. Others are exotic locally-bodied vehicles in third world countries. The familiar Maltese buses are here again, and welcome. Less well- known are Burmese buses built on Canadian Military Pattern chassis, and the retired Paris buses which were bought to replace them. Kuwait, Mexico, Poland, Portugal, Singapore... Many more countries and loads more buses. There may even be some liveries here which can offer suggestions to model bus manufacturers who are running out of inspiration. A fun read for all bus fans. Schuco Pre and Postwar Vehicles by Ulrich Schweizer, German and English text. 174 pages, more than 680 colour pictures. Hardbound. 215 x 255 mm. ISBN 3 00 017245 0 Published by the author in co- operation with Dickie-Schuco GmbH & Co KG Fürth, and available from Schuco dealers, sold with a replica 01055 tin reversing car. Schuco vehicles are among the most desirable old toys to collect. Due to their exceptional mechanisms and high quality of construction, their cars, aircraft, motorcycles and boats beat their competitors and were ahead of their time. This publication takes the collector into the fascinating world of Schuco, with more than 500 different vehicles, colour variations, shop displays, tracks and prototypes. Some prewar and postwar toys have been reissued in the Schuco Classic replica editions, and if this is the case, it is also mentioned. Every item is given a current valuation in Euros, for vehicles in a good to mint condition with a perfect original box. Hans- Georg Schmitt

Le Monde fantastique de Norev by Didier Beaujardin, Bernard Botte, and Denis Darotchetche, French text. 336 pages, 1390 pictures 220 x 290mm. Hardbound with dustjacket. ISBN 2 7339 0927 4. Published by Editions Grancher, 98 rue de Vaugirard, 75006 Paris, France. This book was published to coincide with the 60th birthday of Norev, now the leading model car maker in France, and one of the leading firms in Europe. The book tells the story of life and dreams of Marc Fischer, founder of Norev, who always understood that his miniatures would be part of the toy world. He visited shops, car manufacturers and designers, magazine publishers , toy shows and swapmeets. His aim was to make Norev a synonym for precision and accuracy. This could be seen on the first model car, the Simca Aronde of 1953. As a father he passed his love for model cars on to his sons. Thus, after his death at too young an age, his sons took over responsibility for the company, to continue his dream. His family, Norev staff and collectors all over the world will not forget Marc Fischer, who so generously shared his love of miniature automobiles. Today Norev makes model cars in 1:18, 1:43, 1:64, and 1:87 scales. Almost every Norev model car, from early production in France, to current Chinese manufacture, is described and shown in colour photographs. Models manufactured in Algeria, Brazil, Spain, Portugal and Russia, are included, and every Norev model made is listed. Hans-Georg Schmitt

Editor’s note: Marc was indeed a generous character, who would buttonhole me for my opinion on his latest product or his future plans, and he really cared what I thought, unlike other manufacturers. He took all criticism seriously, even personally, and used it to improve the Norev breed. He was so open and helpful that he often found himself at a disadvantage up against less scrupulous competitors. He once asked me to be a ‘silent witness’ at a confrontation with another company who had offered to manufacture for Norev on a sub-contract basis, and who took away the Norev casting tools to examine them in order to calculate prices. A deal could not be agreed, and the tools were returned. At the next Nuremberg Toy Fair the other firm magically presented their range of new models, which seemed to resemble obsolete Norev models. Yes, they had copied the tools while they had them in their hands! Marc was very upset and confronted the principal of the firm in question, but he got nowhere and could not afford to take legal action for recompense.

The Story of Jeep by Pat Foster, English text. 287 pages, 397 photographs, paperbound 220 x 280mm. ISBN 0 87349 735 X. This second edition details the history of the Jeep, from the early wartime prototypes to the Kaiser and AMC eras, and on to the buyout by Chrysler. It tells how Jeep evolved from a military workhorse to a 4x4 pioneer, then on to today’s family hauler. Hans-Georg Schmitt

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod Ward

Natal Diecast Model Collectors: It looks to me as if Geff Sear has given up on his attempts to find someone to edit the club newsletter, so he is continuing to do it himself. They seem to be doing well, as he says that financially the club is fairly secure. This means that the subcription level can be kept at the same level, 80 Rand, for 2006. But he does point out that members must bring the exact amount in payment, as the club doesn’t carry a float, for security reasons, and can’t give change. The NDMC managed to get valuable free publicity with a spread in Auto Dealer, a local weekly motoring publication, which invited potential members to attend a bi-monthly meeting at the Veteran car Club in Kloof. If you’d like to join, but you can’t make it to Kloof, contact Geoff at 7, Dryden Place, Umbilo, Durban 4001, South Africa.

West Australian Model Collectors Club: Ian Hind, Secretary and Editor of Showcase, the WAMCC publication, notes that future publication may be electronic, but most members are keen to see it continue as a hard copy printed publication. So he is looking into ways to continue in print, though it costs the Club A$1,850 per year to print and post. Among many interesting items in the latest edition is an account of correspondence with Corgi as to why certain models, such as resin dioramas, are only available from Corgi USA, and then can only be shipped to addresses within the USA. Corgi Customer Service suggest that an Australian buyer should look on eBay (which he did, successfully), but Iain finds it an outdated concept to restrict items one one geographical area. It seems the reason for this is that elements of the dioramas involve licensed trademarks, for which the license had been paid for the US market, but not for other markets, so Corgi could not sell them outside the US. I recall a manufacturer quoting costs for a licence for a soft drink being trebled for a worldwide licence, rather than just the USA, yet he only expected to sell an additional five or ten per cent of models in other markets, so he just licensed it in the USA. If someone in the USA buys these items from Corgi, they can sell them on eBay to any part of the world. To join the WAMCC, phone 934 9369, or email jhind@iinet.net.au

Coventry Diecast Model Club: Wheelspin, the CDMC magazine, is edited by Mick (Mixxy) Russell, who is another hopeful type who regards his tenure of the post as temporary, whilst awaiting a new volunteer editor. He usually squeezes in a mention of a concrete mixer model into Wheelspin, and this month it was an item of interest to those who recall the many features on Avon glass decanters published in MAR down the years. Yes, it is a glass decanter (presumably originally filled with some suitably butch male fragrance) shaped like a conventional US truck with a rotating-drum type concrete mixer body. Wonder if Don Elliott knows about that one? I’m sure Mick would be happy to concentrate on his mixer collection, so perhaps a new member will offer to take up the editorship of Wheelspin? It could be you! Just join the long-established Coventry Club by writing to PO Box 3078, Coventry CV2 2ZD.

South Hants Model Auto Club: The Club Sue and Stu Leake, Editors of the SHMAC newsletter, note that 2006 marks the 25th anniversary of the Club. We look forward to all the accounts of exciting celebrations and tear-jerking reminiscences. The members of this club are always good at enjoying themselves, as the account of four of them visiting Retromobile proves. Chris Derbyshire was the navigator, and Rod Fox was the driver. Rod checked in using his wife’s passport, and in spite of modern security checks, no-one noticed. The two others (Damian Good and Mike Kennington) ‘lounged in the back, handing out useless advice’ though Mike was obviously taking notes at Retromobile, to refine his re-launched ModeleX, to take place in July. As well as Retromobile, their trip included a visit to the Eiffel Tower, the Peugeot and Renault showrooms (more like mini classic car shows) on the Champs d’Elysee and three model shops, ‘the like of which we do not have anywhere in the UK’. Chris invites me to explain how the French can make a living at it and we can’t. All I can suggest is that the French won’t be able to do it either, once L’eBay takes hold there. There might be a spare seat in the car to Retro-mobile next year; to join the SHMAC, contact Secretary Dave Painter on 01264 366408.

Maidenhead Static Model Club The next MSMC-organised Toy Fair at Slough (known as ‘Windsor’) is on Saturday 3 June 2006 at the Montem Centre, Montem Lane, Slough, Berkshire from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. It’s nice to see that the Club has found a use for old Models of Yesteryear, with their recent Talbot van chop competition. There were several ingenious and amusing entrie. First place went to John Bennett’s heavily modified van, into a breakdown truck. John Hiett took second place with his cheeky Half Done conversion (only repainted on one side) and third place went to a nicely assembled Chivers-Wright hybrid van by Ian Cook. Derek Boxall took fourth spot with his Woodly Carriers model and Les Duplock grabbed the last of the points with his Talbot Bitza. Les has now edited his last issue of Wheel Bearings, the MSMC magazine, so the members must be hoping that his replacement is just as amusing. Les will be a hard act to follow. If you want to find out who will attempt to fill the vacancy, you’ll have to join the MSMC; first contact the Club website at www.windsortoyfair.co.uk
