EDITORIAL
By Rod WardKEEP IT COMING!
This issue includes lots of news of models planned for release this year, much of it following the visit of Hans-Georg Schmitt on our behalf to the Nuremberg Toy Fair.We also have some really interesting features from our regular contributors. Scott Brown's coverage of 1:43 woodies continues and Dave Turner has bravely decided to take on the big task of describing models of 19641/2 Ford Mustangs, spread over two issues. Graeme Ogg is at it again, designing and building an estate car based on the Bentley Arnage.
Don Elliott is present in three areas (or maybe four) this time. Ethnic diversity is considered in the models of Homies cars, conceived by David Gonzales. Advertising and promotional vehicles are covered, in the form of Wrangler models and finally we have a television-related (and aviation-related) topic in the avia mini pages, with a consideration of Riptide. Many others have helped to fill our pages, but we always need more material, to ensure a healthy mix of subject matter and a broad range of opinion. So whether you have had something published in MAR before or not, why not send something in for a future issue? If you have a thematic collection from which you can photograph some unusual examples, send them in with explanatory captions. If you have a particular interest in, or knowledge of, one make of real vehicles or of toys, send me a historical note, if only a sidelight not mentioned before. If you think an article is incomplete or incorrect, don't just mutter into your beer; tell me. If you send a short note, it can go into the letters column, but your additions could form an article in themselves. I have said it before, but it bears repeating: MAR provides a venue for like-minded individuals to discuss topics of mutual interest. Our contributors do not see themselves as 'lecturers', handing down tablets of wisdom. They want your comments, criticisms and additional information. It is not intended to be one-way traffic from them to you. A 'discussion' requires input from the other side from time to time. Don't be afraid if you have never seen your words in print. There's a first time for everyone; you have to send in your first contribution to somewhere. Make it MAR. I look forward to being deluged in articles and pictures!

WILLY BRANDT recalled by Hans-Georg Schmitt SOME background to Minichamps' 1:43 model of Willy Brandt's Mercedes-Benz 300SEL, pictured on page 191.21. Social Democrat Brandt was Federal German Chancellor, 1969 to 1974. A new Ost-policy began when he fell to his knees before the monument to the victims of the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto. He met with leaders of the DDR, but when his assistant Günter Guillaume was unmasked as a communist spy in 1974, Brandt had to resign. The Brandt figurine with his distinctive haircut and coat stands in front of his 300SEL which must be about to start an official tour, as it is fitted with two pennants. It also has the license plate 0-2 reserved for the Chancellor. The Federal President's car is 0-1.

ENCO QUIETLY RETURNS
Did you ever wonder what happened to Enco Models? After the sad death of founder Ernie Knott, who started the range with a model of the Gordon-Keeble cars which he was so famous for restoring in full size, the range passed to Pete Comben, who had cast the models all along. Personal problems meant that Pete could not develop the range, but when he moved to Germany, to work with Thomas Wolter of Tin Wizard, he always intended to re-release the models. A long silence ensued, though Thomas kept telling us that they would reappear one day. Now they have popped up again at last.
The Facel II V8 open cabriolet and Jensen Interceptor SP have now been released without fanfare by Tin Wizard, in built form and as kits.
SHOWCASE VICTORY ISSUES
Corgi is marking the 60th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE Day) with special issues in the Showcase Collection.
There is a two-piece VE Day set of tanks from both sides: Tiger 1 of Gruppe Fehrmann and T-34/76 of 30th Guards Tank Brigade, complete with soldier figures: £9.99. Individual new models: DH Mosquito, Stuart Light Tank (4th Coldstream Guards), T-34/85 (55th Guards Tank Brigade) with a completely re-tooled new turret, £4.99 each. there is also a German Panther tank at £4.99, and a four-piece VE Day Set of all four models, at £19.99 from May 2005. The Queen is leading a national event in London to mark the combined 60th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day on 10 July 2005, chosen as it falls midway between the two days, 8 May and 15 August 5.

MORE SCOTTOYS
By Jonathan ScottThe Scottoy range, '100% handmade in Italy', as it boldly states on our new package design, continues to expand steadily. We are issuing some nice new items this year, such as the Lancia Flavia, the Fiat 1300, the Fiat 1100/E (the one with the central headlight) and the Bianchina Panoramica. There is also a re-issue of our Multipla which went out of production in 1995! This will be used to mark our tenth anniversary, about which I will supply more details later.

TEA IN WALES, ANYONE?
The new tea-room at Pen-ffynnon, Llangeler, in Wales, opened at Easter, the first phase of Paul and Hilary Kennelly and Vic Davey's West Wales Museum of Childhood.
There is already a toy and model shop for collectors, which will also sell gifts and souvenirs to tourists. The museum itself, housed in two converted stone barns, opens in May and will feature over 20,000 items from Paul, Hilary and Vic's collections and includes diecast motor cars, lorries and buses, tinplate toys, model railways, pedal cars and much more. Hilary says 'We have in our collections many toys that were made in Wales and we plan to have a special display for these; Corgi and Louis Marx toys from Fforestfach (Swansea), Crescent from Cwmcarn, Tri-ang at Merthyr Tydfil, Jolly Roger, Wendy Boston teddy bears and a cuddly Welsh dragon from Cwmpengraig'. We wish the new venture well...
MARSH MODELS NEWS
By John and Pam Simons
Among the latest 1:43 models from Marsh Models, at last, we now have both of the new Cheetahs available: MM129 Hurst Perform-ance and MM130 Works Dragster. Neither car is well documented and the history of both seems a little vague. We now have the pattern for MM117 Shadow DN1 and we are awaiting etch and decals for MM96 Shadow Mk III. Patterns for MM107 Comstock Cobra and MM24M Pacesetter Homes Lola T70 are now with CMA for casting. Continuing with our March 1983/84 theme, we have been sent a picture of a stunning Wynn's version. Does anyone have pictures of this car? We also have more pictures of the Pennzoil version so that will be added to our future release list.
CROSSWAY ARMSTRONG-SIDDELEY WHITLEY ON ITS WAY
Crossway Models have the first prototypes of their 1:43 handbuilt Armstrong-Siddeley Whitley saloon to hand, for release later this year. Crossway's Abbey Classics range has a Ford Zodiac Mark III about to be released, and Police cars include a West Yorkshire Austin 3 Litre, a Manchester and Salford Ford Capri 3 Litre and a Hampshire Triumph 2000 Estate car.
BOOK REVIEWS
1950s Motor-sport in Colour by Martyn Wainwright, 160 pages, 200-plus colour photos. 260 x 260mm. Hardbound with dustjacket. ISBN 1-904788-15-7. Published by and available from Veloce Publishing Ltd, 33, Trinity Street, Dorchester, DT1 1TT; England.
In 1954 Martyn Wainwright started taking colour photographs, alongside his 'official' black and white shots at races and hill climbs in England and Ireland, though he knew they could not be published in magazines, far too expensive at the time. Nearly 50 years later he rediscovered the transparencies and taught himself to digitise them, then to repair the damage caused by age and poor storage. These rare images vividly recall 1950s motor racing and hill climb events including Aintree, Goodwood, Dundrod, Brands Hatch, Prescott, Shelsley Walsh, and Lisdoonvarna, with Grand Prix, sports-racing, veteran and vintage cars, plus amazing specials. The book gives us a delightfully nostalgic trip back to a time when motor sport was more accessible and less regulated, without commercial sponsors plastering cars and drivers with logos and adverts and without electronic assistance to help the drivers.

Maserati by Elisabetta Marsano, Italian text, translated by Judith Goodman. 176 pages, 253 photographs. 260 x 290mm. Hardbound with dustjacket. ISBN 88-370-3129-7. Published by and available from Mondadori Electa Spa, via Trentacoste, 20134 Milano, Italy.
In 1914 brothers Alfieri, Ettore and Ernesto Maserati founded their workshop in Bologna. They moved to Modena to produce cars that would be among the most beautiful and most admired in the world. The first car to bear the Trident was the Tipo 26 of 1926, the era of Tazio Nuvolari and of the great road races, the Targa Florio and the Mille Miglia. Over time the marque developed great racing cars and thrilling road cars, and the Maserati myth continued to grow. Here we have the whole story of the Maserati adventure, including the Coupes, the Spyders, the Quattroporte, bodies designed by such names as Pietro Frua, Pininfarina or Giorgetto Giugiaro. Alongside this story, she puts it in the context of contemporary Italian history over 90 years. Daily life in Italy is illustrated along with pictures from the Maserati company.

Mercedes-Benz W123 by Michael Rohde and Jens-Peter Sirup, German text. 168 pages, 158 photographs 210 x 275 mm. Hardbound. ISBN 3-89880-254-X. Published by and available from Heel Verlag GmbH, Gut Pottscheid, D-53639 Konigswinter, Germany.
The W123 was an ancestor of the current Mercedes-Benz E-class, built from 1975 to 1985. With 2.7 million built, it was one of their most successful models. Even today many are still in daily use on European roads and in Middle Eastern and East European countries. The saloon, estate and coupe had timeless lines, robust technology and a good range of engines. At the press launch of the saloon in January 1976 in Bandol in the south of France they stressed the active and passive safety measures developed for the new car. A year later the attractive coupe was revealed and in September 1977 the estate finally arrived, rather unimaginatively named the T-model. This book describes development, production life and all versions with technical data. It will be useful to potential buyers and of interest to thematic collectors. Revell will release a 1:18 W123 saloon in 2005.

Those were the days Austerity Motoring From the Armistice to the mid-Fifties by Malcolm Bobbitt, 96 pages, 156 pictures. 210 x 200mm. Hardbound. ISBN 1-903706-86-6 Published by and available from Veloce Publishing Limited, 33 Trinity Street, Dorchester, DT1 1TT, England.
Following the Second World War, the British motor industry was geared up for the export drive. Few new cars were available for the home market and only the fortunate few still had a prewar car, but motorists were determined to continue driving, despite petrol rationing. Dues to raw material shortages, manufacturers had to adopt some unusual solutions, especially in bodywork. The pictures evoke postwar Britain's struggles to get back on the road.

Die Welt der Traktor Giganten: Die grossten und starksten Schlepper der Welt. The World of the Tractor Giants The biggest and most powerful tractors in the world. By Dieter Theyssen, Bernhard Roes, Peter D Simpson, German text, also available in six different languages. 200 pages, 321 colour photos. 215 x 270 mm.
Hardbound. ISBN 3-7843-3317-6. German edition published by Landwirtschaftsverlag, Munster-Hiltrup. Other language versions available from Dieter Theyssen Media, Dwarsefeld 11, D-46419 Isselburg, Germany.
When a European farmer drives his tractor between his farm and his fields, he doesn't totally block the road, perhaps just causing a temporary traffic jam. With few exceptions, their tractors are no bigger than light trucks. The situation is completely different where farm fields are endless, as in parts of the USA, Canada, Australia, South Africa or Russia. For these areas much larger tractors have been developed. This book includes facts and photographs of these giants from all over the world. Four wheel drive monsters made by Acremaster, Big Bud, Case-IH, Ford, Massey-Ferguson, John Deere, Rome, Steiger, Versatile and others are shown here. Giant tracked tractors are also impressive. Fascinating unique specimens are also here, such as the 500 bhp Schlüter 5000 TVL the biggest rigid-chassis four wheel drive tractor worldwide. Also shown here in detail is the biggest tractor in the world, the Big Bud 16V-747 and Versatile's biggest machine, the Big Boy 1080, built in Canada. The drivers are dwarfed alongside these tractors with eight or more wheels.

Kraftfahrzeuge und Panzer der Reichs-wehr, Wehrmacht und Bundeswehr Catalogue of German Military Vehicles since 1900 by Werner Oswald and Jürgen Plate. German text, 758 pages, 1400+ photos Hardbound 175 x 245 mm. ISBN 3-613-02370-9 Published by and available from Motorbuch Verlag, Stuttgart. Postfach 10 37 48; D-70032 Stuttgart, Germany
This is the story of all the motor vehicles in the various German armies since the early 20th Century, when the first armoured cars. combat cars and supply trucks entered service. Between the wars. the Reichswehr did not have many motor vehicles, due to the conditions of the Versailles Peace Treaty. The Wehrmacht was motorised very quickly in the late 1930s and became the technically most up to date army in Europe; then it came to a sticky end. In 1956, the new Bundeswehr incorporated many specially designed and built vehicles. This book, written by the late Werner Oswald, now updated and enlarged by Jürgen Plate, surveys all the vehicles used down the years, including staff cars, motor cycles, light and heavy trucks, off-road and armoured fighting vehicles. It is interesting for its coverage of German military history as well as the vehicles.

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod WardSouth Hants Model Auto Club: Stu Leake, joint Editor with his wife Sue of the SHMAC newsletter, comments on how much they like the new format of MAR. Well, we all produce A5 publications now. In the latest issue Chris Derbyshire notes a problem with 1970s Dinky Toys with plastic wheels and tyres. One plastic reacts with the other (as also seen on some Solido models of that era) and the wheels melt. Even some plastic plinths on which models were mounted can melt if they come into contact with these tyres. Chris says, 'I can't see a way out of this. I suggest that no matter how mint-boxed it is, the toy is valueless if has melting or melted wheels. Check out those cupboards and boxes now. Sell now, before it is too late!' So, if you are offered any 1970s Dinky Toys from Hampshire, check the wheels before you hand over your money. For more useful info, join the SHMAC; ring Secretary Dave Painter on 01264 366408.
West Australian Model Collectors Club: Ian Hind, Editor of Showcase, the WAMCC Club publication, really is a true-blue model fan. He prints all his text in blue ink, which must be a strain on the eyes of some of his readers. He also frightens them with accounts of burglaries and thefts of collections, a number of which have suffered in the Perth area in recent months. Ian also refers in his latest issue to the widely-publicised theft in 2004 of around 200 from a collection of over 5,000 Dinky Toys displayed at Bressingham Hall in Norfolk. Sadly, as so often happens in these cases, the owner has decided that he may now have to sell the collection. It is difficult to get adequate insurance for a large and valuable collection these days. Frequently a collector will get a quote, then be appalled at the cost and have to make the hard decision to leave the collection uninsured or dispose of it. It is even worse if the owner only finds out that he was under-insured, or not covered at all, after theft or loss through a fire or other disaster. If you check the prices these old toys fetch at auction (see below), then multiply that by the number of models in the collection, values soon reach tens of thousands of Pounds. Special collections of a high value are not usually covered by your household insurance. The insurance premium for specific cover (plus the cost of any additional security methods demanded by the insurer) will probably be higher than your annual budget for adding to the collection. No fun in that. If you'd like to be given even more bouts of the willies, join the WAMCC and read Showcase; just phone Ian on 934 9369, or email him on jhind@iinet.net.au
BUS NEWS FROM EFE
By Frank JoyceAt the Acton open day in February we showed a handmade display sample of our new Bristol RELH Coach and pre-production samples of our new 'Wartime Buses' series.
It was interesting to listen to visitors' recollections of these vehicles: I remember them coming on to our camp during the war; or going into the Vickers Works; or arriving new and going into the paint shop. This series has now increased from six to eight models. We have added a grey TD1 from Plymouth City Transport and a grey Daimler Utility from Birmingham City Transport. We intend to release four at the end of May and four at the beginning of June. Some collectors at Acton were under the impression that we had raised the prices of the 10T10 and the Guy GS models, but prices are the same as standard current release models, though some dealers have exploited the situation and put their prices up.
