As the new world order continues to evolve, I note changes in our familiar surroundings. Well-known print magazines seem slip away into the undergrowth at regular intervals, the latest being the long-established Cars and Car Conversions, which has ceased publication. The number of active ranges of collectors' models is falling, as many artisan ranges reduce their flow of new releases to a trickle, then quietly fade out, often with no formal announcement. Specialist shops are also still closing down, though in many cases proprietors carry on without retail shop premises. The latest announcement in this area is the Toy Exchange, which has been established for 25 years in Shirley, Southampton.
Gary Hames has decided to give up the unequal struggle and will in future only operate by mail order and the internet from Wimborne, in Dorset. I wish Gary every fortune in his new role as non-shopkeeper. If our experience at Modelauto is anything to go by, Gary will be much happier without the responsibilities of commercial premises. I have no doubt that his loyal local customers will miss his cheery countenance in the shop, though they can still keep in contact by mail or email.
AUCTION REPORT
We have never been big on auction reports in MAR, partly due to the lack of such information supplied by auction houses. It is also in part because our readership expressed such strong views in the past that we should not publish 'price guides' or even hint that collecting is in any way connected to 'investing'. I have to mention, however, that the auction in which the ex-Meccano items saved 25 years ago and cherished since then by the late Doug McHard took place successfully in April. All of the fascinating material has now found new homes.

EFE NEWS UPDATE
By Frank JoyceThe interest shown in our new models at the UK Toy Fair was encouraging; the AEC Renown and Guy GS were a pleasant surprise to visitors. Requests for the Guy GS already include London Fire Brigade and St Johns Ambulance Brigade. There was a lot of interest in our new truck samples and seeing them helped convince some sceptics that they will happen. They will start to appear at the end of the year. There are many internet web sites around the world reporting on the model bus industry, each trying to be the first with news. Unfortunately speculation is sometimes included which can become regarded as fact. These activities can cause confusion, frustration and disappointment to collectors but it is something over which manufacturers have no control.

CREATIVE MASTERS
Creative Master Northcord Limited (CMNL) has released the Alexander ALX 400 bodied Dennis Trident in Oxford Park & Ride livery, and Plaxton President bodied Dennis Trident Reading Buses. Oxford Bus Company got 20 extra low height Alexander bodied Tridents in 1999 for Park & Ride routes. The model represents 929, a demonstrator provided by the manufacturer to cover for original Tridents whilst away for rectification work.
It is the only high and single door Trident on Oxford Park & Ride services. Reading Buses Dennis Trident 472 (P051 WNG) was 17 months old when it entered Reading services 31 and 33 in 2003, one of six purchased from Pete's Travel of West Bromwich to increase low floor capacity. The production of ukbus 1014 and ukbus 2008 is 1800 piecesof each, distributed by John Ayrey in the UK. CMNL had hoped to release some JB1006 Mitsubishi Fuso Non-Step Citybuses on to the general market, but the entire run was purchased by a single agent, so CMNL regrets that JB1006 will not be available to the Hong Kong or UK enthusiast or collector markets.
West Australian Model Collectors Club:
The WAMCC Club publication, Showcase, recently pointed out the relative differences in cost of the same Minichamps model, purchased from different sources around the world. Bought from North America it would be 10% cheaper than from the local Australian supplier, and by the time VAT was deducted, up to 20% cheaper from European sources. And these are apparently 'full recommended retail' prices, not the prices after discounts and special offers, widely seen from European dealers. It pays to shop around, wherever you are in the world. The same issue also had a piece on 'Oil changes' in a recent issue;
Oil Change instructions for Women: 1) Pull up to garage, book car in for oil change. 2) Drink a cup of coffee. 3) Write a cheque for $55.00 and leave with a properly maintained vehicle. Total Spent: $55.00 - Total Time: 30 minutes Oil Change instructions for Men: 1) Drive to K-Mart and buy oil, filter, kitty litter, hand cleaner and write a cheque for $95.00. 2) Stop by Liquorland on way home, buy a slab of beer, write a cheque for $30.00, drive home. 3) Arrive home and open a beer. 4) Waste 30 minutes looking for jack stands. 5) In frustration, open another beer and drink it. 6) Place pan under engine, unscrew drain plug. 7) Drop drain plug in pan of hot oil! splash hot oil on face and arms in process. Swear. 8) Crawl out from under car to wipe hot oil off face and arms. Throw kitty litter on spilled oil - have another beer while watching oil drain. 9) Spend 30 minutes looking for oil filter wrench. 10) Give up, crawl under car and hammer a screwdriver through oil filter and twist off. 11) Crawl out from under car with dripping oil filter splashing oil from holes - drink another beer. 12) Install new oil filter. 13) Pour first litre of fresh oil into engine before remembering drain plug from step 7. (Bugger!) 14) Hurry to find drain plug in drain pan. 15) Dump in five fresh litres of oil and finish beer! Total spent: $125 - Total Time: 4 HoursWestern Australians obviously have a keen sense of humour. Coventry Diecast Model Club:
The latest issue of Wheelspin, the CDMC magazine was (probably) the last to be edited by Mick Russell, though he promises to continue to support the publication with contributions in future. The usual mix of interesting articles included one on Dick Barton, Special Agent, fondly remembered by British steam radio fans of a certain age (ie the average age of most MAR readers). David Kinsella notes that in the movie spin-offs that followed the BBC radio series, Barton drove an Allard K1 V8, in fire engine red. How about that for a special limited edition model release? Complete with a figurine of actor Don Stannard in the Dick Barton role, that would be a real obscurity for movie buffs. Maybe with a cd of the Devil's Galop theme tune as well? On a more sombre note, Will Roe notes that in the past year (the Club's 29th) they lost their Chairman, Erik Fredriksen, and are likely to have to replace more of the long serving committee this year. South Hants Model Auto Club: The SHMAC magazine gets better with each issue, a tribute to Editors Sue and Stu Leake, and to the other members who keep their contributions coming in. There has been an influx of new members, some of whom joined at Stoneleigh Park, where the Club had its 'stunning' model displays, so these new members can have the benefit of the new-look magazine. Sir Stirling Moss OBE has been the hero of both Sue and Stu since their childhood, and among the displays at the Show was their beautifully arranged tribute to his career, in model form. Imagine their delight when Sir Stirling, guest of honour at the show, took time out to visit their stand and to sit with them. Sue got a cuddle from the Maestro, and was left speechless.All of this was arranged as a surprise by their fellow club members, and it shows what a nice crowd of folk they are. The Miniature MG Car Club: MMGCC President and Editor of the club newsletter Miniature Garage Alan Long notes that our mention of the club in MAR brought in four new members. Virgil Christianson, Dominic Scott, Peter Ellis and Geoff Marsh have swelled the ranks of MG fans. Pleased to be of service. The newsletter has the usual range of interesting news on miniature MG topics, and we now have the next second part of Alan's article on Corgi-Vanguards MGAs, to follow part one in MAR 180. It is always a labour of love, producing newsletters and other club publications, and often seems to be unappreciated by members. As Alan says, 'I'm currently a training police officer, so I am only home at weekends, making time a precious commodity'. Well, at least those MMGCC members who also read MAR now know Alan's situation, and will appreciate the newsletter more! Maidenhead Static Model Club: Following the news that Bill Alexander is retiring as editor of Wheel Bearings, the MSMC newsletter, as reported in MAR 181, a member came forward to fill the breach. This offer is, however, only 'if no none else comes forward'. So the post is still open if another member wants to push him or herself forward. Or, as suggested in MAR 181, if you aren't already a member, why not join the MSMC and become Editor in one move? As well as reading Wheel Bearings, a favourite activity is participating in the monthly competitions. Brooklin Collectors Club: Jack Patrick, Editor of the Brooklin Collector has now published the list of visitors to the Brooklin factory in Bath for the 30th Anniversary celebrations on 21 and 22 May. There are so many that they have had to be allocated specific times for factory visits, of which there will be five group tours. I seem to have forgotten to send in my application to join the festivities, so they'll just have to accept my best wishes and my sincere hope that everyone will have a lovely couple of days, including the four hour Avon river cruise.
Jack also notes that the San Francisco Bay Brooklin Club special model for 2004 will be a 1947 Buick Roadmaster station wagon, finished in pale gloss yellow with two figures, of a golfer and his caddy, available around July 2004 to Club members only.
The Brooklin Collectors Club special issue for 2004 will be a set dubbed a 'Pair of Squares'. 1958 to 1960 Ford Thunderbirds were nicknamed Squarebirds. There is already a 1959 convertible in the Brooklin Collection (BRK64A), which replaced the 1959 hardtop (BRK64). This new set will include the first 1958 convertible in bright pink and a 1960 hardtop in burgundy with the optional sunroof in the open position. Then all three Squarebirds will have been made. The sets will be available for distribution to members at the BCC Annual General Meeting (likely to be held in October) and are limited to two per member at £110.00 per set. They have to be ordered by 1 July at the latest, so you'll have to join the Brooklin Collectors Club now to ensure that you don't miss this set of Squarebirds.

The latest in Venture's popular Prestige Series covers the double decker buses operated by Barton, the major Midlands independent bus operator. This is a companion volume to their Single Deckers volume, published last autumn. Once again Mr Atkins's evocative photographs are amply captioned by Mr Banks. These pictures not only tell the story of Barton's double decker buses, they also evoke the street scenes of their period in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire from the 1930s to the 1960s. This book will therefore be of interest to anyone wanting to record the dowdy fashions and glum surroundings of mid-20th century England, as well as of interest to bus enthusiasts. And not just Barton fans; apparently the company bought so many ex-Leeds buses that followers of the Yorkshire fleet would make pilgrimages to visit their old favourites.

The magnificent Type 57 was the final flowering of the genius of Ettore Bugatti and his son Jean, the last truly new model from the Bugatti factory in Molsheim. Conceived as a fast, luxurious and exclusive touring car, the T57 was built from 1934 to 1939 and was so successful that the model accounted for around ten per cent of all Bugattis built at Molsheim. Its development caused a family disagreement, when Ettore realised that his son Jean had fitted the prototype with an independent front axle. In the end the car was produced with a rigid front axle, which was already outdated by 1934. The cars were a great sales success, and also formed the basis for many Grand Prix cars and Le Mans winning sports-racing cars. As well as factory-built bodies, the Atalante, Galibier, Stelvio, Ventoux, Atlantic and Aravis, such well known European coachbuilders as Graber, Letourneur & Marchand, Gangloff, James Young, Van Vooren, Saoutchik, Vanden Plas, Figoni & Falaschi, Sodomka, Labourdette and Rice & Harper created exciting bodies for the rich and famous. Also described here are its less-fortunate successors, the Types 64 and 101. This second edition has been enriched with over 100 previously unseen photographs.

This books asks (and answers) many questions. Was its V8 engine originally designed for a rear-wheel drive car? How did an obscure French car of the 1920s inspire the Cord's unusual front suspension? Why did so many examples survive to become among sought-after classics?
Scale models of this car made down the years include Dugu's 1:43 scale bright orange Cord 812 roadster made in the 1960s, the 1:18 model made recently by Signature Models, and Western also made a 1:43 Beverly sedan and there have been many other models of the coffin-nosed car. Hans-Georg Schmitt

The foundation and equipment of the modern (at that time only West) German Army, the Bundeswehr, in the mid 1950s is still shrouded in secrecy. The creation of the Bundeswehr was in the Cold War 50 years ago and this publication briefly describes the organisation and vehicles of the Bundeswehr between 1956 and 1966, but is by no means a complete history. German Chancellor Dr Konrad Adenauer welcomed the first 1,500 volunteers in Andernach. The first vehicles were ex-US Army until the German motor industry got back into production to supply new equipment.

Model cars can be lifeless, unless we can sometimes see the original vehicles upon which they are based. Enthusiasts love to see the beautiful lines of the cars in miniature, but here we can see the real thing with movement and sound. Collectors of Bugatti model cars can once again have the unique opportunity to see and hear the originals of their collection. This film concerns the 2003 Bugatti Festival held in and around Molsheim, the birthplace of these wonderful thoroughbred cars in Alsace. The cars, their incomparable engine sound and a beautiful landscape, gives an extraordinary mixture. One of the highlights was a weave race in which the all of the old treasures could show their power. The 2003 festival included an exhibition for the 70th Anniversary of the Bugatti Autorail, the railcars with Royale engines.

FIRST GEAR EMS UNIT
By Carol KrayerThe latest 1:34 diecast model from First Gear is of an International 4400 EMS Rescue unit, modelled after the vehicles used by fire departments, hospitals and municipal and private transport services throughout the United States. The opening hood reveals the accurately detailed engine. and the cab features an authentic interior. The EMS body has rear and side doors that open to reveal interior cabinets, attendant seat, squad bench, IV holders, flash light, hand mike, patient gurney, interior light bars and medical equipment including oxygen bottle with gauges, blood pressure monitor, fan control unit and even a clipboard for the patient's chart. BIG BIG RIVER BOAT
John Halcrow of Big River Models tells us that he has been awarded a licence to make hand-built models of the current World Water Speed Record (WWSR) holder, Spirit of Australia. They represent the 288 mph version which beat Donald Campbell's Bluebird record, and the current record-holding 317 mph version, which broke both the 300mph and 500kph barriers at the same time. John says, 'Ken Warby is preparing to increase his record in the near future. The Blowering Dam, south west of Sydney, where the attempt will be made, is still a little low after Australia's drought, but its orientation, sheltered waters, proximity to service access and a nine mile run, still make it the preferred venue'. As a matter of interest, below is a table of officially recognised WWSR holders, for those wanting to assemble a complete display. Minichamps 1:18 diecast in China for Germany: 100 052000 VW Type 82 Kübelwagen Russia 1941, Division Grossdeutsches Reich. When Professor Porsche developed the Volkswagen, the basis for the later Beetle was established. Air-cooled rear engine, swing axle, rear wheel drive and torsion bar suspension were already there. The traditional chassis construction method with bolted and screwed body made it possible to fit different bodies. This included an open military version and in 1938 preparation of military Volkswagens began, resulting in the Kübelwagen and Schwimmwagen. In 1938 the first prototype was ready, but the Oberkommando of the Wehrmacht was not satisfied after the first tests at the proving ground at Munsingen. So Porsche re-worked it, for delivery in December 1939. In Spring 1940 mass production started. In April 25 vehicles were built by Porsche in Stuttgart, in May production began in the KdF-Wagen town (after the war re-named Wolfsburg). The vehicle's main advantage was its light weight, so it didn't need four wheel drive. Its air-cooled engine was another advantage, resisting African heat and Russian cold. The Minichamps model has all the features of the original. The square edged body, designed to be built using simple tools, is shaped realistically, and it is very well finished in correct wartime livery. All four doors and bonnet open, and the steering works realistically. The spare wheel, spade, jerry can and towrope are typical fittings. The dashboard is fitted with the central instrument from the saloon car. Basic seats and doors without linings show that the soldiers had few comforts. An outstanding detail is the folded hood, accurately showing the wrinkled cloth and its framework. The simple 1131 cc 24.5 hp engine is also well detailed. The baseplate includes typical VW axles, the rear one fitted with reduction gears on both half-axles. (Notes Hans-Georg Schmitt).
