St PETERSBURG NEWS

TRAMS The only PCC car to operate in West Germany was a Hamburg 3060 which was diverted from a Brussels order in late 1951. The model of this tram is released now as 149b in our range. It entered service in Hamburg in February 1952, and was used only on route #8, sometimes on night route #3. 3060 ended its career in Hamburg in November 1957; it was transported by rail to Copenhagen where it ran in 1958 for some weeks on route #7. Later in 1958 it went to Brussels, where it joined the fleet as #7000. It was withdrawn from regular service in 1994 and then was repainted to original Hamburg livery and preserved in Germany. The 1700-series Pittsburgh PCC is released now in the inter urban version (158a) and the next Milwaukee streetcar model is a large 500 series, built in 1911 by St Louis Car Co.TROLLEYBUSES Three Twin Coach Model 40TT trolleybuses are released now, in Detroit, Cincinnati and Brooklyn liveries.
BUSES Our first North American 1:48 scale bus model is 225 the first Chicago propane Twin Coach 52-S2P. In 1950 Twin Coach announced its large 52-S model and in the Summer the demonstrator went to Chicago, where officials, impressed by the new bus, placed an order for 500 propane-powered 51-seat units, the largest single urban bus order in history up to then. Deliveries began in December 1950, opening the propane era in Chicago. The first bus entered service in January 1951 on route 82A-Kedzie-Homan. The buses, numbered 5000-549, for many years were the symbol of CTA modern equipment. They were retired from main routes in the late 1960s and all remaining buses were withdrawn in the early 1970s. News via David Sinclair of new pre-Second World War cars from USA Models. 'For several years now miniature model builders have produced mostly models of cars of the fifties., but many older collectors, especially, have asked for more pre-war models. The new models from Motor City's USA Models are:
USA40 1939 Chevrolet coupe ivory or maroon. USA42 1941 Plymouth coupe, green. Both models available end of April.'
(In case any European or Japanese readers wonder about 'pre-war' being applied to a 1941 car, remember that the Americans and the Russians didn't join in the grand punch-up until that year. Ed.).

New for East Germany will be the Wartburg 311 Camping saloon with glass inserts in the roof.
The Wartburg 311 saloon appears as the EMW 311, that was the first version of this popular car, after which the name was changed to Wartburg, due to complaints from BMW in West Germany.

By Hans-Georg SchmittADP is a German-based range from Güstrow, mostly of models of vehicles originating in the old Eastbloc, and made for adp in Russia.
1:87 (HO scale) subjects include Ford 3 ton V3000 truck or tanker, Ford G388T trucks, and a Ford G917T. There are also many GAZ, ZIL, ZIS, URAL, KAMAZ, Wartburg and Opel vehicles, such as Opel Kapitän 1939 as four door saloon, two door saloon and cabriolet. The Volga M21, Moskvich 408 and Lada Niva will be made as DDR Volkspolizei patrol cars.
In 1:120 (TT scale) are two versions of the ZIL-130 truck.

The normal 1:87 range 'Model 2000' will see an impressive model of a Claas Lexion 480 combine harvester. The 1:87 Classic range will gain Borgward Isabella Coupe, Opel GT Coupe and Mercedes 280SL Pagoda.

Canadian Toy Collectors' Society: For 2000 the CTCS offers its 22nd annual Brooklin Model, a limited edition of 300 of the 1941 Chrysler New Yorker Convertible, top down in red with light grey interior and a tonneau in mid grey. The wheels will also be red with bright edging and chrome hub caps complete with white side wall tyres. Wessex Model and Toy Collectors celebrate 15 years as a formally organised Club. The Committee is proud of the achievement, and hope that the Club will continue for many years to come. Since 1987, with the help of Brooklin Models, WMTC members have had the opportunity to buy a specially finished Brooklin each year. The resulting funds in the Club bank account enable the Club to organise many events for members, usually at no cost. Although they have hosted a couple of events which overseas members attended, of necessity the majority of events are aimed more at local members. So the dilemma facing the Committee was how to mark the 15th Birthday ina special way to involve all members. All had a free pen and diary, and membership this year is free to anyone paid up at 31 August 1999. So the decision is to make this year's special model FREE to every paid up member, as of 31 January! For a change, it will not be a model from the Brooklin range, but the Lansdowne1947 MG YA Saloon, due for general release in November 2000. As usual, the model will have special features, including the colour, to make it unique for WMTC members. Only one model per member will be made. There will be no additional models for sale. So, it's too late if you haven't already joined the WMTC, no free Lansdowne MG. We can hear you kicking yourself from here!
Maidenhead Static Model Club: The MSMC has a new Publicity Officer, Vic Davey, as Cliff Maddock has resigned due to work pressures. Cliff retires after two years of hard work promoting club activities and will be missed for his contributions. There will be a Club outing to the Classic Automotion vehicle rally at Crowthorne on 14 May. At the March AGM a few members made controversial comments about the future direction of the club, but members were pleased to ear about the launch of a new website which gives details of Club activities including the Windsor International Swapmeet, which is held every January, June and September. South Hants Model Auto Club: Formed in 1981, by a few ardent collectors of diecast models, members now include collectors of tinplate, plastic kits, pedal cars, books, automobilia and much else. Club meetings are now held on the second Monday of each month, at the Holy Family Church Hall, (upstairs room), Redbridge Hill, Wimpson, Southampton, 7:30 pm to 10:00 pm, free to paid up members. Guests may attend up to three meetings without subscribing. Each club meet has a different theme so that members can bring along their models, books, photos etc. as a topic for everyone's discussion. Brooklin Collectors Club: Jack Patrick continues to keep all and sundry entertained in the pages of the Brooklin Collector. Among lots of news and features devoted the the products of Brooklin's various ranges, Jack notes that 220 of the club special model for this year have been ordered by members. This is the quantity that will therefore be made by Brooklin, with none left over. Jack also mentions the forthcoming 1:43 truck models in the US Model Mint series made by Brooklin, a car transporter trailer and log trailer, both resin. BEATTIES IN BOTHER
Many years ago in MAR we told the story of Colonel Beattie's Southgate model railway shop and how it grew into the countrywide chain of model stores in every major UK town and city. After various owners, Beatties passed into the ownership of Era Group, who in March 2000 asked for administrators to be appointed to Beatties, as part of a 'financial restructuring'. Visitors from outside Britain are often intrigued by the existence of a national chain of 'specialist' model shops, whose universal high street presence often made it impossible for local independent businesses to compete. Beatties always followed current trends in the model and hobby world, starting with model railways and progressing via plastic kits to diecast vehicles and other products of interest to collectors and hobbyists, though in truth the breadth and depth of ranges stocked was rarely as extensive as a truly specialist dealer.
They came unstuck, however, when they moved away from models into electronic games, and heavy investment was not followed by corresponding sales volumes. Falling demand left Beatties with high debts, and their bankers agreed that the situation had to be resolved, hence the administration decision. It seems likely that at least 35 of the 60 Beatties stores will close completely, threatening more than 600 jobs. This will be followed by a return to Beatties' original model and hobby business. This may leave a few dozen British towns and cities with room for someone to replace Beatties as the local source for models. It may even be ex-employees who fill the gaps in their locality. It was an industry joke that 'Beatties always train up their own competitors', because at one time so many Beatties managers left to set up their own shops, once they had found out how the business worked. It has been well known for some time in the model business that the Beatties chain was in difficulties, and it is only a surprise that they have left it until now to do something about the situation. Even Beatties' ex-Managing Director, David Henley, is in prison after being convicted of embezzling almost £60,000 from Era Group. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Beatties.

Paolo Rampini, whose reference works on model and toy cars are indispensible to many enthusiasts, will publish his next book in 2001, devoted to Italian toy automobiles.
RETURN OF GREYHOUND
Henk van Asten tells us that after some time out of production he has ordered a new batch of Conquest 104, AC Greyhound in metallic blue. This is due to renewed interest after the re-printing in the AC Owners Club magazine of Ron Gersbank's AC article from Model Auto Review (with our permission, of course).

Jean-Yves Puillet established his Mini Racing range near Paris 25 years ago, one of the earliest French producers of 1:43 scale white metal kits, contemporary with John Day in England. TOO GOOD TO SAW UP
By Hans-Georg SchmittIn his latest film, The World Is Not Enough, James Bond's company car came to a sad end, cut in half by a huge saw. In the cinema, many visitors were sad about the wrecking of an exciting sports car, worth over £70.000.
If British cinemagoers will share this view, after the Rover debacle is another question. Influenced by the legendary type 507, which was created by Graf Gortz, this new sports car will be launched by BMW in early summer 2000. Its V8 4941 cc engine develops 400 hp, and can catapult the car, with its light aluminium space frame chassis from 0 to 100 km-h in 4.7 seconds. If the maximum speed of 250 km-h is reached, an electric device cuts in. Before the launch of the real car, to coincide with the James Bond film, model cars were available in three different scales. I hope not too many collectors will avoid BMW model cars after the Rover disaster. (Some already have, Ed.). Anyone who has combined their BMW and Rover models now has to split the collection again into BMW, Rover and Land-Rover.
The 1:87 model was made by Herpa. It is well-finished, the body accurately shaped. Lights and chrome parts are separate inserts. Badging is clearly printed and the internal rear view mirror even has a reflective surface. The car is available in various colours, some with a hardtop packed separately in the box, to be fitted if desired.

Paul's Model Art-Minichamps made the 1:43 version, reproducing the shape of the original well. Lights, grille, air intakes, mirrors and some interior parts are separate components. The body is bright red, the realistic looking interior is black with red sections. Under the bonnet is a detailed replica of the V8 engine. The model has Munich license plates, maybe BMW numbers, and badging is clearly executed. The aluminium wheel rims are exact copies of the originals.

All models in both scales are supplied in the now-typical black plastic folding box, which unfolds to become a display stand with the car still attached to it.
Kyosho make the 1:18 scale Z8 model to a detail level which is hard to believe. You are tempted to push the button to start the engine. Bonnet, doors and boot lid all open, the steering works, and the doors are hinged to open like the real car. Under the bonnet is a realistic looking V8 engine. The roof can be displayed open or closed, witha separate part. The interior is outstanding, linings and seats are leather-look paint, dashboard and centre console are accurate and the steering wheel with its alloy spokes in the style of the 507 is superb. The seat belts are separate, and look like real textile. Even the pedals and foot rest are there. Lights, badges and wheels with alloy rims and brake discs underline the appearance of this wonderful model. Kyosho now set the standard for their competitors.

LANSDOWNE JAVELIN
As well as the information supplied by John Roberts to accompany our special prize Jowett Javelins in this issue of MAR, Brooklin Models have also provided some background information on Lansdowne LDM 26, the 1953 Javelin. It was announced in 1947, the work of Gerald Palmer who would go on to produce another classic in the shape of the MG Magnette (LDM 3). The Javelin incorporated a number of advanced features which put it ahead of its British competitors. Suspension was by torsion bars all round and the engine was unusual in being a horizontally-opposed OHV unit mounted ahead of the radiator and gearbox. Top speed was over 80 mph, well above average for the time. The body design was sleek and streamlined, its teardrop shape owing much to Lincoln's classic prewar Zephyr sedan. Two models were available at first, the standard version having a painted metal dashboard and cloth seats whilst the de-luxe gained wood and leather. Although some initial mechanical teething problems were experienced the Javelin soon built up a faithful following and it was a sad day when the firm folded in 1953. Jowett's MD Arthur Joplin originally owned JKW 107 and the car has never been restored, being its present owner's daily transport as it has been since he purchased it in 1966. By Hans-Georg SchmittREVELL: 1:24 plastic kit from Germany: .07383 New Mini Cooper, proposed for October 2000 release, for the originally-planned launch of the real car. When BMW scattered the parts of Rover Group to the four winds, they retained the New Mini, but will transfer production from Longbridge to Cowley. That delay, and the need to make a new badge, means that the new car will not now appear until 2001 at the earliest. And of course no patriotic UK buyer will want it. Revell may also reconsider the launch date of the kit.
REVELL 1:25 plastic kit: .07378 Dodge Sidewinder Show Truck, one of a series of show vehicles by Chrysler. The Sidewinder combines styling cues from the Dakota pickup and a sports truck based on the Viper. It has the eight litre V10 engine from the Viper. It was shown for the first time at the US 1996 SEMA show. The 87 parts are flash-free and easy to assemble (skill level 3). Pre-painting needed for best results.
