By Rod WardOBITUARY: ERNIE KNOTT
We were very saddened to hear that Ernie Knott died suddenly on Sunday 17 February, a very young 80 years-old. Ernie's dynamism and enthusiasm belied his years, putting to shame many younger folk. He was well-known to many sectors of the car enthusiast fraternity. His early years as a signwriter wielding the paintbrush at Silverstone race track (actually painting the numbers on many well-known cars as they waited on the starting grid) led on to his famous championing of the Gordon-Keeble marque, while he was based at Enotts Coachworks in nearby Brackley. He reckoned that every Gordon-Keeble built had been through his hands down the years, and he became a model car manufacturer through his efforts to make a model for the G-K Owners Club. The resulting 1:43 hand-built Gordon-Keeble became the first Enco Model, cast for him by Pete Comben, who eventually took over the Enco range when Ernie 'retired'. Ernie's personal passion was for Ferraris, of which he had an extensive collection of models, books and other ephemera. His joy when he finally bought a full-size Ferrari to cap the collection was obvious to all his friends. In recognition of his efforts in writing a column on model cars for the Ferrari Owners Club, Ernie was about to receive their award for Writer of the Year at the 2002 AGM. All his many friends around the world will want to join us in extending our deep and sincere condolences to his wife, Ann, in her loss. 'I loved him to bits', says Ann, who was 28 years his junior.
She adds, 'Please would you pass my thanks to all those readers of MAR who sent me many condolence cards and letters, floral tributes, donations and especially to those who attended the funeral. All this has been a great comfort to me'. The funeral was held on 27 February at Banbury Crematorium. As Ernie himself often said, 'They don't make them like that any more'.
JOHN PULLS IT OFF
A vote of thanks to everyone who helped in our relocation out of Leeds, and for your patience if you visited us or telephoned whilst some critical operation was going on. A special note of thanks to John Hanson, who knew it would be the trickiest time he would ever have, in the years he has worked at Modelauto, but who managed to pull it off with aplomb, keeping the mail order business going virtually single-handed, packing and dismantling at the same time. John's problems were compounded when he found himself without Richard Ineson, who wanted to assist in the Modelauto moving operation, but instead found himself involved in a different sort of operation. Richard had the sudden and alarming diagnosis of a malignant tumour at Leeds General Infirmary on 1 February, and he was immediately operated on. We know that all MAR readers will join us in our best wishes for his speedy and complete recovery, through the discomfort of the subsequent treatment. Apparently the prognosis is good, and we are sure Richard will triumph over adversity, with the support of his wife Brenda and daughter Hilary.
MAR - YOUR VIEW
By Rod WardOne or two comments I have received from readers, regarding content and make up of MAR have prompted some more thoughts about possible changes for the future, if they are backed up by other readers:
Colour Pages: David Swales notes the need to get in as many pictures as possible on the expensive colour pages, but 'the centre illustrations should be slightly less in number and larger, to show details better'. I can see that this could be a preference for some readers. The centre pages often have over 80 models pictured these days, as opposed to less than 40 a few years ago, reflecting the large number of subjects of interest each month, and my desire to squeeze in as much as possible for your money. It would be possible (and less work for me) to reduce the number of colour photos by half. But would you be happy if the half left out rwere the subjects in which you were most interested? It is quite difficult, due to size, to achieve a total between 40 and 80, and 60 photos wouldn't be much bigger than if there were 80 in total. Text size: Always hotly-disputed. Everyone's ageing eyesight means a general preference for larger type, but this means less text in the same space, and/or less pictures. I would not find this a problem to execute.
Photos and captions: The need to cram in as many pictures as possible means that mono (black and white) pictures are often smaller than the ideal size. If they were reproduced to a larger size, the repro quality would be better, especially in the case of those pictures sent in by contributors which may not be of the utmost quality. Again, no complaints from me, I'd rather have a poor photo than none at all, but from time to time someone who doesn't understand the imperatives of MAR (and its relatively small print run) will moan that the photos are not top-notch quality. If you say you'd prefer it, I will, like other publishers, leave out of consideration any photo of 'suspect', or less than professional, quality. This in would turn reduce the number of pictures from which I select illustrations by as much as half. I can also make mono pictures bigger, which would make repro quality better, whatever the quality of the original, but that will mean there would be less in each issue. Your choice? Captioning has been mentioned recently. In the past it has always been maker-scale-material-country of origin-marque-detail. If you'd prefer marque first in bold capitals, just let me know.
avia mini pages: Aircraft collectors continue to complain that there isn't enough coverage in their pages. You'll have to believe me, I don't leave anything out. I publish every news item I get! That's all there is on offer from the world of model aircraft collecting, I'm sorry to say. David Swales also grumbles that avia mini pages 'take up valuable vehicle space'. Well, they don't, exactly. They take up space which used to be taken up by advertisers, when we had more advertising pages in MAR.
General MAR contents: We rarely get complaints about this now, as most readers and 'the trade' finally understand where we're at. Hans-Georg reported that all trade exhibitors at Nuremberg Toy Fair said that they appreciated our 'flood of information', the only magazine which covers all ranges, from makers large and small. This will continue in future, as long as information is forthcoming, but what I include depends on material provided. The 'centre ground' of coverage remains 1:43 and 1:50, but we will go down to any scale, 1:76, 1:87, 1:160 and smaller, or up to 1:24, 1:18, 1:8 and larger. But is anything missing? Your input: What do you think? Bigger text size but less of it, bigger pictures but less of them as well? Differently-worded captions? Something we are not covering? Does a particular treatment of a news page or article in a recent issue suit you better than others? It would help me if you can give examples of your preference, rather than just vague dissatisfaction. Within our tight cost parameters, we cannot increase the amount of colour pages, I'm sorry to say.
But we could decrease the amount of colour, and lower the cover price, if a majority of readers preferred that instead.
It's your choice. Let me know.
BUSES AND TAXIS
EXCLUSIVE FIRST EDITIONS
By Frank JoyceTo help keep you up to date with our new tooling and the projected releases, there are illustrations of some of our new models in this issue. The first item is a modified Daimler DMS, and the first model release will be a single door body in the livery of Maynes of Manchester. The first shots of the Leyland Titan and Greater Manchester Standard Atlantean-Fleetline buses look splendid and the first release of these two models will feature suitable London and Manchester liveries. Proposed release dates May and June respectively. Early castings of the tooling patterns for the 1938 and 1959 London Tube Stock were displayed at the London Toy Fair, and the interest shown in them was very rewarding. More details will follow later in the year, and yes, you can unscrew the carriages to dismantle them.

Described by Tony SteenmeyerIt has been a long wait, but at last the 1:50 scale NZG diecast Menck M90 is available. Released in January 2002 in Menck blue, it is a lovely model, fully poseable any way you like. All sliding doors can be opened and with a special screwdriver-like tool all three drums can be rotated. The sliding door in the rear of the upper works can also be opened to reveal the engine. It is a real work of art and the complete drive train with all its big gear wheels is visible through the open doors. The M90 is a most distinctive machine, being as asymmetric as you can get! Just like the NZG Menck M251 dragline model, the trackbelts are metal and work! The M90 has an aircooled Deutz 115 hp six-cylinder diesel engine, a five axle-ten-wheel truck and the upper works swings on a large double roller bearing on the truck. The cab is sound insulated and heated and is separated from the machinery deck by a door, so the operator has a good working environment. Anyone who has ever operated or worked next to a machine with an aircooled Deutz diesel will surely still have the distinctive engine whine in his ears! However, in this machine you are quite all right. There are no air-operated controls, but everything works completely mechanically. That is no problem because a Menck is not heavy to operate. The model has a bucket for hard and rocky ground. The middle tooth of the bucket can be swapped for a longer one to rip up hard ground, but not with the model. The M90 was introduced in 1955 and a total of 670 machines had been built when production stopped in 1970. Its weight is 28 tons as a dragline. As a lifting crane it could have a boom of 21.5 metres and it could lift 13 tons. There are one or two German contractors who still operate pre-Second World War Mencks on demolition contracts, because they are almost indestructible, and with their slow-running marine diesel engines they don't use much fuel!

By John W WhiteheadSome new models recently released in the USA:
Johnny Lightning: Cheetah, diecast, approximately 1:64 scale (above).
Although the packaging claims the car is 1:64 , it looks more like 1:58 or so. at first I thought this was just an imaginary car, but research gave me a bit more information on the 1960s Cheetah. It was a Chevy-engined answer to the potent Ford-powered Shelby Cobra. The car was very light and very short, so short that there was no drive shaft; the transmission linked directly to the differential. It must have been a load to handle! I can't tell if it is accurate or not as I have no feel for a real car that I've never seen, but it's the only Cheetah in my collection.
(Editor's note: The Cheetah has always been a popular subject with sports-racing car fans, though there have been few models, mostly expensive 1:43 handbuilts or plastic kits. From John's picture the Johnny Lightning model looks pretty good for a 1:64 scale toy.)
Classic Metal Works: 1949 Mercury Club Convertible, diecast, 1:24 scale (bottom left and centre). These popular 1949- 51 Mercs are usually modelled as the Club Coupe, and CMW did previously release the Coupe. The colours on this well-finished model are stunning, rose metallic with a tan interior. The Mercury Convertible is also available in a very striking cream with a red interior.
Mattel Hot Wheels: 1968 Mercury Cougar, diecast, approximately 1:64 scale, quite accurate and a pony car other than a Mustang or Camaro for a change (top right). The colour scheme attempts to replicate a common and popular lime green with black vinyl top from the era, but the green is the wrong shade and the vinyl top is too shiny. But it is a very well made casting, with inaccurate but believable wheels.
Youcan't beat it for 57 US Cents!
Racing Champions: 1951 Hudson Hornet two door sedan, diecast, 1:64 scale, finished in a Kelly green, a very period colour (bottom right). The casting is beautiful, the lines of the Hudson are well captured; one can quickly see why this body style was a successful stock car in the fifties. Unusual subject for a mass market toy car.

3 Lee Chapel's Tornado, 1949. One of the earliest Bonneville
streamliners, built and driven by Ed Chapel, set Class C record in 1952, before ending its career in a high speed accident in 1953. 2 Knot Farrington's Ford Thunderbird, 1962. Heavily modified, this red metallic car looks almost like a streamliner. It set several class records over the years.1 Summers Brothers streamliner, 1962. Built by Bob and Bill Summers, who later held the wheel-driven LSR with Goldenrod, this car, known as the pollywog (tadpole) set a number of class records at B0nneville in

Ugo Fadini has updated us on the Omicron range of 1:43 handbuilt Land Speed Record cars from Italy.8 Mercedes W25 Rennlimousine, Caracciola, Gyon 1934. The first Mercedes record car, closed cockpit version of the W25 GP car. It set class C records for the flying km and mile at Gyon in Hungary driven by Rudolf Caracciola.
9 Djelmo, 1924, Giulio Foresti. The name Djelmo composed from the names of Egyptian prince Djellaledin, its financer, and Italian Edmondo Moglia, the designer,. It was built in 1924 for the Land Speed Record. The project was delayed for several years until it ended in disaster in 1927 when Giulio Foresti miraculously survived a terrifying accident at Pendine Sands in Wales.
7 Bertone ZER, 1994-95. Driven by Oscar De Vita, this electric streamliner built by Bertone, set the Hour Record for Class 2 electric vehicles in 1994 at 199.882 km/h and hit over 303 km/h in 1995. 6 Mercedes 3 litre record car, 1939. In this car, built on a W154 Grand Prix chassis, Rudolf Caracciola set the kilo and mile standing start Class D records on the autobahn near Dessau.
5 Auto Union streamlined record car, 1937. Similar to the Avus streamliner, Bernd Rosemeyer set 12 class and 3 World records with it. It was later modified for Rosemeyer to attack the Mercedes records (see Omicron 1).
4 Ermie Immerso's Thunderbird Turbine streamliner, 1976. Unconventional Bonneville car, powered on all four wheels by two Avco Lycoming turbines. Held Speed Week record for this type of vehicle, 264.903 mph, until 1998.
3 Wilhelm Herz's NSU streamllner, 1965. Powered by motorcycle engines of 250 and 350 cc, built and driven by Herz, it set class records at the Salt Flats in 1965 and in Germany in 1966 and 1971.
2 Art Arfons' Green Monster 'Anteater', 1960. The first Green Monster buiit for Bonneville by Arfons, dubbed the anteater because of its nose. Powered by an Allison engine, it set fastest speed at Speed Week in 1961. The model is matt aluminium, as the real car was never painted. (Omicron #1 is sold out, very few left of #2)
Future releases 10 Infinity jet car, Glenn Leasher fatal accident, Bonneville 1962
EMERGENCY
RANGE ROVER CORRECTEDOn the front cover of MAR 160 there was a picture of a Police Range Rover converted by Paul Robson. The scale was given incorrectly as 1:18, whereas the model is actually 1:43 scale. That's what happens when we are given incomplete captioning information with photos! All may not be lost, however, as Paul says, 'If anyone wants a 1:18 scale version, I may just be able to make that as well'.

As noted in Hans-Georg Schmitt's Nuremberg notes, the old Italian brand of Mebetoys has been revived, under new ownership. we are not sure where the new company is based, but we suspect it may be in Germany. The somehow rather dull subject matter is, of course, diecast in China. The whole operation has the feel of a bought-in re-branding exercise (the resemblance to such ranges as New Ray is notable), but we may be doing the new Mebetoys an injustice. Time will tell.

The long-established Japanese firm Kyosho has an excellent reputation for the quality of its diecast models. They continue to develop their 1;18, 1:43, and now 1;64 scale diecast ranges. we will cover their new releases for this year as they appear, but they have also recently introduced their 'Masters Collection' which requires a little explanation. These are described as 'coldcast', as opposed to diecast. that means resin with a mineral filler, of course, but in Kyosho's terms it also means solid castings, with no interior detail, no transparent window mouldings etc. The emphasis is on capturing the shape of the vehicle, which is ideal for many dream cars and show cars which probably didn't have any interior trim anyway, but seems less suitable for other subjects. There are various sub-series, all 'coldcast':

1:18 diecast in China for Germany: 180 067722 Porsche 904 GTS 1964. In developing the 904, the so-called Carrera GTS, Porsche pursued a different path. Ferdinand Porsche III, ('Butzi') grandson of the legendary professor Ferdinand Porsche, designed the glass fibre-reinforced resin body, new for Porsche. The Carrera GTS was powered by the four cylinder 185 bhp type 587 engine to reach over 260 km/h. The silver model reflects very accurately Butzi's design. He also designed the successful 911. Front lid, rear bonnet and doors open, the steering works realistically. Under the front lid the tank, spare wheel and brake fluid reservoirs are visible, under the rear engine cover the air-cooled four-cam four cylinder boxer looks right. The twin ignition coils and distributors are there, as are the two carburettors with huge air-cleaners. The interior is also realistic, only the oversize old-fashioned door hinges are not up to the same standard. (Notes by Hans-Georg Schmitt).
REVELL 1:24 plastic kit: 07222 BMW-Williams FW23 2001 BMW Williams started the 2001 F1 season with high hopes after a surprise third place in 2000. and a new 820 bhp V-10 engine. Ralf Schumacher, already in his third year with Williams, contributed three wins to his total of 49 points. Juan Pablo Montoya, the Monza winner, made an impressive F1 debut. BMW-Williams gained third place with 80 points. The model is accurately shaped with detailed suspension and well detailed cockpit. The components are almost flash-free and decals for both drivers at Magny-Cours and Imola are included. Skill level 3 is required. (Notes by Hans-Georg Schmitt).
