MORE NEW FOR 2000
We continue to unfold the plans of the world's model vehicle manufacturers, for release in 2000, in this issue of MAR. Even with the many lists and notes included, we have not listed everything. The longest lists, from Vitesse Group and Minichamps, are totally indigestible when served up in one lump early in the year. We have decided, therefore, to just include brief summaries, to be developed in greater detail through the year, as their programmes unfold. The number of new items due for release this year is astonishing, and the subject matter spreads from classics to the latest new cars on the road. There are still gaps, however. Where are all the Lagondas, Alvises and Daimlers of yesteryear? We understand the reluctance of manufacturers to model obscure makes of 'ordinary' cars, but there are still many all-time classics which are being neglected in scale model form.
SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS
Every now and then I remind you to support those companies who place advertising in MAR. This is not a frivolous comment, but a serious point. Most of our advertisers are very small concerns, with limited advertising budgets. They choose to advertise with us because they believe we get to the most discerning collectors of their products. In many cases they also choose to support MAR because they feel that there should be a magazine like ours on the market, which understands their viewpoint. In such a specialist world as ours, collectors, dealers, distributors and small manufacturers share similar problems, and MAR tries to ensure that everyone gets fair coverage. So, support our advertisers. Buy their products, and use their services. They help to support MAR with their advertising.
St PETERSBURG NEWS
By Leonid KoykhinHere are the latest St Petersburg Tram Collection releases from Russia: TRAMS Four new trams are ready now. Pittsburgh 1700-series PCC (158) is released in 1:48 scale. Pittsburgh Railways Co (PRCo) operated the second largest new fleet of PCCs in North America (666 total). Pittsburgh 100 was the first PCC in the world, in March 1936. In 1948 St Louis Car Co built for PRCo #1700, first of a new batch of 100 (Job 1669) and in 1949 the remaining 99 were delivered. All had sealed windows and forced-air ventilation. 25 (1700-1724) were built for interurban service, equipped with Clark B-3 trucks; 75 city cars (1725-1799) were built with Clark B-2B trucks. Interurban PCCs had sealed-beam roof headlights, a small loco-style pilot at the front, a spare trolley pole and other additions. Some special equipment was removed after the two long lines closed in 1953.
Three other new 1:43 trams are from Europe, first Madrid PCC (128). The Spanish capital had an extensive tram network of more than 35 routes. In 1942 one of the two first European PCCs (1001), built by Fiat in Italy, went as a demonstrator to Madrid and 49 more were ordered that year. Because of war-time conditions, delivery of 1002-1050 was over four years, 1943 to 1946. 1010 was diverted by the German Army to Berlin, where it was destroyed in 1945, so another PCC was built for Madrid in 1946. From 1949 to 1960 110 more PCCs (1051-1160) were built in Spain under Fiat license. In the 1960s the system was replaced by a metro and by 1967 there were only seven routes, all PCC-operated. The whole system closed in 1972.
The Amsterdam three axle tram (131) is also new. In 1948-1950 Amsterdam received 60 three axle motor cars (491-550) and 50 trailers from Werkspoor to renew its fleet. The trucks were built under license from SLM. The front door was too narrow for passenger use, so it was used by crew. These stylish trams were rebuilt in 1957 and in later years the roof sign box was enlarged and doors changed. After arrival of the first articulated trams in 1956 the three axle sets were used mainly on lighter routes. The first tram was scrapped in 1973 and all were withdrawn from service in 1975. With increased traffic 20 sets returned to service in 1976-1978. In May 1979 Amsterdam said Good Bye to its three axle trams and in 1980 all except six sets were scrapped. Our last new tram model is a Belgrade PCC (149a) of the 112-116 series, made in Belgium by La Brugeoise.
TROLLEYBUSES The only new trolleybus model is a Bogota ZIU-682. In 1967 Colombia traded coffee for 50 Soviet ZIU-5 trolleybuses, 650-699, to replace their old fleet of Canadian Brills and second-hand US Marmons and Brills. In 1975 75 more Soviet trolleybuses were again traded for coffee, in this case more modern ZIU-682 vehicles, 2000-2074. Bogota's trolleybus system closed in August 1991.
BUSES Three new liveries on the utility Bedford OWB are out now. They are Portsmouth Corporation 170 (206a), Royal Navy (206b) and Singapore (206c). One of the principal independent bus companies in Singapore, Tay Koh Yat, acquired a few ex-RAF Bedford OWBs after the war. The company operated some 50 normal control buses, both ex-military and purpose-built buses. In 1954 Tay Koh Yat began to acquire a new buses from Commer, Albion and Fargo, and by 1964 the company operates 13 routes with more than 100 buses. CLUB NEWS
Maidenhead Static Model Club: Chop and Kit was the clubnight theme at the February meeting of the MSMC. Members showed all sorts of special vehicles made from standard kits and production models. Winner of both categories was 'the daddy prizewinner of them all', John Bennett, with a Ford Consul convertible on a street diorama (above), and a pickup with removeable bonnet revealing detailed engine compartment. Another regular prizewinner, Paul Rowley also featured strongly with his Bedford horse box with wooden bodywork (above centre). The next date for the club's International Swapmeet, Britain's longest running event, is Saturday 3 June 2000 at The Montem Centre, Slough. Further details from swapmeet co-ordinator Gary Hames on 01703 784484. Volkswagen Model Club: Jolly Jim McLachlan has no option but to increase the VWMC subs for 2000-2001, but it still offers great value in the club's 22nd year. Issue 88 of the club magazine included the usual variety of Volkswagen news, views, and illustrations. For membership details, you can e-mail Jim on volkswagen.modelclub@virgin.net
BMW Model Collectors Club International: So as not to intrude upon private grief, we won't go into the problems that have recently surrounded the Club. What with the aggro about the 30th anniversary BMW model, and delayed publication of Baby Bimmer News due to Michael Izor's new career, 'a few subscribers are no longer my friends' as Michael puts it. Michael aims to fulfil his obligation to members who subscribe to BBN by extending 1999 subs to 2000, but the special model is a different matter. He says 'If this subject is brought up again... please get a life, and get the hell out of mine!' So, running a collectors club is not all fun, then? Anyway, among useful info in BBN 50 was this list of all the 'Art Cars' by BMW, for completists.

have made a model of the 'Wolf of Mafeking', a gun used by the beseiged defenders during the Siege of Mafeking in the Boer War, in South Africa, from October 1899 to May 1900. The garrison was commanded by Baden-Powell (of Boy Scout fame), whose native name was the 'Wolf that never sleeps'. To augment their artillery battery, Major Panzera had this howitzer, called The Wolf, produced in the railway workshops and mounted on an agricultural undercarriage. To mark the centenary, BFM offer the Wolf howitzer, with figures of Colonel Baden-Powell and Major Panzera as a Mafeking Tableau at £34.95. With the set is a certificate plus a colour print of a £1 Siege Note that featured a B-P drawing of Wolf and the Defenders. MINICHAMPS 1:43 NEWS
By Hans-Georg SchmittRecent diecast releases from Minichamps in 1:43 scale:
430 032108 Mercedes-Benz C220 'Esprit' saloon 1993, blue-black metallic. This car has such untypical Mercedes features as brightly patterned cloth seats, headrests and door linings. Lights, radiator grille, outer mirrors and screen wiper are separate, and the three pointed star on the bonnet is a work of art.
430 033100 Mercedes-Benz 180 saloon 1953-57, light grey. The body is accurate, only the petrol filler cap in the right rear wing is missing. Headlights, grille and bumpers are separate, mostly chromed in the fashion of the era. The two indicator lights in the front wings are too high and not correctly shaped, and the hub caps are notquite right, as the Mercedes star is too big and an additional ring in body colour is missing. The interior is nicely detailed, even the clock in the middle of the dashboard is the right size. The chromed reinforcement plate for the rear number plate was needed for the new license plates which appeared in Germany in 1956.
430 043215 Opel Rekord P1 Caravan 1958-1960, grey and white, and very accurate, even the two-tone paint scheme, which only featured on a special version, the Opel Rekord Ascona, made only at General Motors assembly plant in Biel, Switzerland. The interior is excellent, even the knobs for the small quarter lights in the front doors are the right size. The baseplate is well detailed, but the end of the exhaust pipe is too long.
430 045619 Opel Kadett Type C Caravan 1973-1977. This model has been described in MAR before, but it is now in a new colour, white with light brown interior.
430 048000 Opel Zafira mpv l999, blue-metallic. After the first batch of models was made solely for Opel's launch of the real car, it is now available also in model car shops. The model is of the top of the range Zafira with chrome framed radiator grille.
430 055101 Volkswagen Beetle 1303 saloon 1972-74, green. The production years given here are confusing, because all photographs of the 1303 from this period show the front-indicator lights at the top of the front wings and no finger recess beside the filler cap lid. The model has indicator lights in the front bumper and it has the recess, so after some research work I'm sure that this is the 1975 car, the last big Beetle. This technically interesting version was only made for three years, it came too late, as its competitors offered more room, were faster and consumed less fuel. This Beetle from Minichamps is accurate, apart from the minor features mentioned above. The interior is so well-detailed that even the cover for the hand-brake lever is accurately shaped.
430 087001 Ford Focus three door saloon 1998. Now the Focus appears in black
430 112800 Peugeot 306 two door saloon 1998. The silver painted body is quite well-shaped, only the upper line of the front-wings is concave in the side view, the original is slightly convex and curves slightly to the A-pillar. The rest of the body, the interior and the baseplate are good.MÄRKLIN-TRIX FOR 2000

GAMA: The range will be extended. The tinplate fire engine in old Gama style announced last year was supplied to shops shortly before Christmas. (The Museum of Gebr.
