EDITORIAL
by Rod WardSummer holiday
Well, that’s another half-year of MAR completed, so the interval before you get the next issue will be a couple of weeks longer; seven weeks instead of the usual five. We’re off to the south west of England again for a fortnight to recharge the batteries, then it’s back to the keyboard for five more issues of MAR before Christmas. To those of you who, like me, are still working; have a nice summer holiday. To those of you who are already retired; you don’t need a holiday. See you in July...
AUTO REVIEW: VAUXHALL
TThe latest Auto Review book is now available, on Vauxhall. This is one of the longest stories to be told in this series, as the company originated in the mid-19th century, and the marque is still in existence today, (just).
Now for the latest appeal for material I can include in future Auto Review books: future titles include British tractors and traction engines, Armstrong-Siddeley, British coachbuilding companies, Daf, Alvis, Aston Martin, Lagonda, Hillman, Singer, aviatrices (famous lady pilots), and many other subjects (20+ others in our plan so far). If you have any illustrations (advertisements, brochures, your own photographs etc) or any personal anecdotes you can offer on any subject, please send them to me as soon as possible for inclusion in future publications. I also invite your suggestions for future titles...

Techno Classica 2009
By Hans-Georg SchmittIn early April 2009 the world’s biggest indoor classic car show took place again at the Essen fair site. All 12 halls were filled with everything you could desire. Over 165,000 visitors matched last year’s record attendance. A number of ‘barn finds’ and other relics were on display in ‘as found’ condition; a Horch, a Steyr, some French cars, even real chickens surrounding an old racing car find. Mercedes-Benz showed some racing cars to mark the 75th anniversary of the silver arrows. Audi showed their new Audi Front 225 Roadster from 1935, rebuilt from scratch using photographs. VW had a bright display of their brands, behind which the German Bugatti Club had a poorly presented and located stand. It was hard to believe that the Ford Probe III, the design study for the Sierra, launched at the 1981 Frankfurt Show was in a display of historic cars from Ford Germany. The Tatra Club’s superb display evoked the past winter. Model car firms present included Brekina and Busch (with a 1:87 BMW 327) on a shared stand, CMC, Revell, Minichamps and Schuco. BahnShop 1435 showed models related to German railways including a 1:43 Schuco Borgward B2500 tilt truck DB. ADAC offered a 1:90 Schuco Piccolo set for Trentino Classic 2009, of an Austin Healey 3000 and a VW Samba bus, limited to 500 pieces. Audi Tradition offered a 1:43 Minichamps Sport Quattro S1 Pikes Peak in orange, limited to 333 pieces. Mercedes-Benz Accessories had a 1:87 Bub /8 saloon from 1967, limited to 500 pieces. Mini offered a 1:87 Mini, and VW Kommunikation’s model cars included a 1:90 Schuco Piccolo Transporter T3 van from 1982, limited to 500 pieces. Herpa, attending for the first time, had a 1:87 BMW 2002 tii Touring from 1971. Revell offered a 1:18 Opel Manta B400 in a special livery. Minichamps had a 1:43 1970 Opel Ascona A saloon. Schuco’s special fair model was a 1:90 Piccolo Austin Mini Cooper from the 1967 Monte Carlo Rally, #177, limited to 1000 pieces. Its driver Rauno Aaltonen was present for an autograph session.
MINICHAMPS 1:43 diecast in China for Germany: 436 035600 Mercedes- Benz G4 1934 of Francisco Franco.
By Hans-Georg Schmitt. The G4 was developed for the German Reichswehr, but the government could not afford it. When Adolf Hitler came to power, however, the new Wehrmacht used it for publicity. In 1939, Hitler gave a G4 to General Francisco Franco of Spain, which is in the collection of the royal house of Spain. From 2001 to 2004, it was restored by the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, who repaired the mechanicals, but not the body, interior or top, to retain the patina of age. The model looks good, the first G4 at a reasonable price, but there are some errors. The wheelbase is 1:43, but the overall length only around 1:45. The radiator shell is too low, making it look too wide. The front bumper is missing, the shape of the boot is different from the original and folded hood should be brown, not black. The dashboard is too far under the windscreen, and there is no figurine of General Franco, which surely should have been there, as the model is no 11 in the ‘Political Leaders Series’.
CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod WardSue Leake, editor of the South Hants Model Auto Club publication Wheel Nuts, is a tractor nut, and notes that, in a supposedly dying vehicle collecting field, model tractor collecting is vigorously supported by all ages. I know that full-size tractor events are also very popular, and I see that toy tractors always sell well at auction. The recent tractor partwork has also been popular... In the Maidenhead Static Model Club news-letter, Wheel Bearings, Michael Driver reviews the exhibition at the Derby Silk Mills Industrial Museum organised by the Dinky Toy Collectors Association (see MAR 232) to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Dinky Toy. Hundreds of models are on display, and you can buy replica early Dinky Toys in liveries to match the exhibition. In the Brooklin Collector, organ of the Brooklin Collectors Club, their 2009 Club model is revealed, a 1933 Stutz DV-32 Victoria open convertible. They also note that due to ‘huge’ demand, Brooklin have increased the quantity of the Hertz Mustang to 600. Barry Lloyd, editor of Wessex Toy and Model Collectors’ Smalltalk, asks if Dinky ever intended to make a Douglas Tugmaster aircraft tractor...
