EDITORIAL
by Rod Ward2005 ANNIVERSARIES
Many companies like to mark anniversaries with special issues of their products, and the model vehicle business is no exception. Sometimes a special livery is applied to an appropriate model vehicle, or a special commemorative pack is used. Here are some ideas for 2005 anniversary issues: 50th anniveraries: First UK commercial televison broadcasts, by Associated Rediffusion and ATV (Granada and ABC follow in 2006, Scottish TV 2007, TWW and Southern in 2008), Television shows first aired 50 years ago: $64,000 Question, Wyatt Earp, Gunsmoke, Cheyenne, the Phil Silvers Show. 75th anniversaries: Amy Johnson flies to Australia, the R101 airship crashes in France, and Morris Commercial is founded. Centenaries: The first AA patrol, the first Ford commercial vehicle, and the opening of Austin's Longbridge factory (!).
Any other (non-60th) suggestions are welcome. I'm sure some of those manufacturers lacking in inspiration will be glad of the ideas, and maybe they will also prompt MAR contributions relating to these anniversaries.
Your Suggestions
I have already had lots of promises of contributions to future issues (and one or two ready to publish) following my 'Keep it Coming' Editorial in MAR 192, and I am still getting comments about the new design of MAR. It just shows that you regard this as 'your' magazine, when you offer suggestions for further improvements. By the nature of such suggestions, many of them turn out to be contradictory and cancel each other out, but others are thoughtful and well-considered and many of your ideas will be incorporated in future issues wherever possible.
NOW FOR A SHORT BREAK
This is the time of year when we have a little gap for a breather between MAR issues. There is usually an interval of five weeks or so between the copies of MAR dropping on your doormat, or that of your usual dealer. There will be an additional couple of weeks before you see MAR 194, to give us time for a short holiday to recharge the batteries for the second half of 2005. Look for MAR 194 in July, before the 7 August publication date.
KENNA ALLARDS By Pete Kenna
My latest 1:43 handbuilt model is the Allard K2, made in four colours at £90.00 each or, to special order in any other single colour, for an extra £10.00, available direct from me.
At the moment I am also making some Standard Vanguards, Phase 1 and 2 in various colours.
My next model is an Allard K1 Woodie station wagon, the details of which were supplied to me by Gavin Allard, the grandson of Sidney Allard, the original car maker.
AA to the rescue
By Maz WoolleyThere have been many models of the motorcycle combinations operated by the AA and RAC in the post war period. Britains, Dinky, Benbros and Budgie all produced models in various scales. This article looks at a model of a 1950s AA combination supplied as a white metal kit or built model by UK maker P&D Marsh, specialists small producers of model railway accessories who have a few vehicles in their range. Their Morris Z Van has previously been seen in MAR. The bike is also available separately, with rider. Internet users can find more details of the models supplied by the maker on their website. The AA had close ties with BSA and I believe that this model is based on a BSA M series. The model has quite a few parts: basic bike, handlebars, legshields, sidecar frame, sidecar body with lid and chair wheel with mudguard. All need painting and assembly. A small jewel is included for the headlight, but no AA decals are supplied. The castings are pretty good, just as well because some of the parts are small and delicate; fettling would be a risky process. A saluting AA Patrolman is included and he sits well on the model. The patrolman and his uniform that really date the model to the early 1950s, before crash helmets were introduced and the uniform lost some of its military overtones. The model was good fun to make and I am pleased with the results. The decals on the sidecar are the result of another foray into DIY using inkjet printable decal paper.

The origins of the Mk II go back to the early 1950s and the launch of the (retrospectively-named) Mk I. Sir William Lyons realised that there was a gap in his Jaguar range between the two-seater XK and the opulent Mk VII. Some potential Jaguar buyers wanted a smaller sporting saloon, a volume car to bring more money into the company. This 2.4 litre saloon broke new ground for Jaguar with its monocoque construction, new suspension and engine. The design, finalised by Sir William himself, is modelled accurately by Minichamps; the beige interior looks like real leather. The spoked wire wheels look very realistic. In black with a beige interior it is limited to 3,024 pieces. (Pictured on page 192.32.19). 430 756904 Porsche 911 RSR 3,0 Jägermeister Kremer; ADAC Supersprint 1975, Hans Heyer, 439 051040 Opel Blitz 1.75 ton van. Unlike the tilt lorry, above, this had turn indicators, so it was built after Autumn 1957. The van body was made by Miesen. In green with a black chassis, it is limited to 1,500 pieces. (Pictured on page 192.01).

THE STORY OF ENCO MODELS
By Peter CombenFurther to the notes on page 192.21, here is the full background history of the Enco range. Enco Models was founded at the start of the 1980s by the late Ernie Knott and his wife, Ann, who ran the Gordon Keeble Car Centre in Brackley in the UK. The first model in the range, not surprisingly, was of the Gordon Keeble. Ernie bought the Gordon Keeble master from me. I had made it shortly after leaving Corgi Toys where I had worked in the development section. Calling on my diecast experience, I decided to explore moulding and white metal casting techniques that could produce a far higher standard of casting than was available at the time. I chose the Gordon Keeble as the first project and viewed the model as if it were an addition to Corgi's range, thus it had a somewhat stylised body shape and jewelled headlights, together with minimal components and quick and easy assembly. I made a set of moulds and produced the first small test batch of Gordon Keeble models in 1980.
Between 1981 and 1986 Ann and Ernie commissioned me to produce all the other models in the Enco range. These included the Sunbeam Tiger Mark l and Mark 2, the Sunbeam Alpine Mark 5, the Facel Vega Facel II in saloon and convertible form, the Ferrari 308GT4 European version (chosen by Ernie, a noted Ferrariste) and the Jensen Interceptor range, which included the Mark 2 and Mark 3 saloons, the convertible, the coupe and the FF. I also produced the castings, and Ann and Ernie made and marketed the kits and built models. I continued to develop my own sub-contract white metal and pewter casting to a very high standard of accuracy and complexity. Ann and Ernie's real Gordon Keeble business was doing so well that they had little time to spare for the Enco Models range, so they sold it to me. I merged the range into my casting business and raised the standard of the built models to a level that received much recognition among collectors.
My wife was seriously ill from 1991, so I had to drop the built models from the range and I shelved all plans for new models, supplying only kits of the current range, but I continued the sub-contract casting side of the business. In 2000 the decision was made to move to Germany so that my wife could get the medical help she needed. I had been working closely with Thomas Wolter of Tin Wizard in Germany because we have a similar approach to white metal casting. Our castings are the same size and thus are compatible technically for a common production line. We both have considerable experience in white metal casting, not just in model vehicles, but it many other areas too, and two heads are better than one! The move to Germany took place at the end of 2002, and in 2004 I formed a German business, Encotechnik, as the manufacturing base for all my own work.
Tin Wizard and Encotechnik combine expertise and technology. The Enco Models range is gradually getting back on track again and is being made available via Tin Wizard, including all the Jensen models listed above. All other models are being gradually re-tooled. The new addition to the Enco range is the Jensen SP, which is now available in kit form. Enco Models is still UK-based, and supplies UK subcontract customers with castings which it buys from Encotechnik in Germany, where development and casting is carried out.
Editor's Note: We must all welcome the re-establishment of Enco Models, especially at a time when so many ranges have faded away for good. And you will be pleased to hear that Peter's wife is benefiting from the improved treatment she is now receiving in Germany.
NOREV RECENT 1:43 RELEASES
By Hans-Georg SchmittNorev have recently released these models:
474600 Peugeot 406 Berline ST Pack Sport 2000. The ST Pack sport model had a choice of two special petrol engines, a 2.2 litre 16V or a 3.0 litre V6. The car is piana blue with characteristic 16 inch Ouragan wheel rims and the interior with special trim. When the car had the 2.2 litre 160hp engine with manual five-speed gearbox, it could reach a top speed of 218 km/h. (Pictured on page 192.23).
790050 Alfa Romeo GTV. At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2003 this Pininfarina creation was shown in its facelifted version. GTV production will cease at the end of 2005, though the Spider will be manufactured for a little longer. The exciting shape has been excellently transferred into the model car, perfectly finished in metallic grey, with details tampo-printed. (Pictured on page 192.33). 790100 Alfa Romeo Spider. Because it has so much in common with the GTV, the Spider, also designed by Pininfarina, was given the same facelift. This model is finished in bright red with a realistic interior. Even the Pininfarina emblem is tampo printed. (Pictured on page 192.33).
800200 Nissan Skyline GT-R KPGC10 1970. This Skyline was designed to race and even today, more than 35 years later, it is one of the most popular cars on classic rallies in Japan. It has a DOHC six cylinder 1988cc engine with a manual five speed gearbox. It had rally-proven equipment such as widened wheel arches, oversize wheels and a rear spoiler. When fitted with chrome bumpers and grille, it could also be seen on ordinary roads. The model is finished in metallic grey. (Pictured above).
158210 Citroen GS Saloon, launched in 1970 as a family car; in 1971 it was voted Car of the Year. Unlike most cars in this market segment, it offered a decent compromise between space and style with its fluid lines and big windows, including many design features from the bigger CX. The interior had seats in blue synthetic leather. The model is platinum blue, with number plates for Maine-et-Loire, between Le Mans and Nantes. (Pictured on page 192.32). 750005 Porsche Cayenne V6 Fire. A Porsche as a fire chief's car doesn't sound credible. But what are the requirements for an efficient fire vehicle? It should be fast and capable of traversing any terrain. Porsche's solution is the Cayenne V6, with a 3.2 litre 250hp petrol engine. Bietigheim-Bissingen is close to the Porsche works, so perhaps the car was supplied at a nominal price to their volunteer fire service. The Norev V6, like the real Cayenne Turbo, has adjustable suspension. It is very detailed, in fire red with a blue light bar. (Pictured on page 192.61).
471070 Peugeot 1007 Mini-mpv. With the new 1007, Peugeot introduced the new double zero series. The 1007 is a new concept for Peugeot, a real mpv with electric powered sliding side doors. It incorporates design cues from current Peugeot concept cars, like the slanting headlights and the large air intake in the front, divided by the bumper,. The 1007 has a 110hp 1.6 litre petrol engine with a sequential semi-automatic gearbox. The model is reef blue, the excellent interior is grey and blue. (Pictured on page 192.32) 474730 Peugeot 407 Elixir concept car, shown at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. It heralded the new style of the 407 range, with a huge Ferrari-like grille and a C-pillar at a steep slope. Four large seats give great space and comfort. The Elixir has the new V6 HDI engine developed in co-operation with Ford, fitted with a particle filter. The high-gloss wheels are a concession to current US taste. It is metallic grey, with an ivory interior. (Pictured on page 192.33).
513175 Renault Floride, introduced at the 1958 Paris Motor show, soon a huge success. Female drivers in particular loved the elegant lines and spacious interior of both the cabriolet and coupe. It had an up-rated Dauphine engine, four speed manual gearbox, and alarming swing axles at the back. Drum brakes and a non-synchromesh bottom gear were still standard issue in those days. Americans loved the slightly modified Caravelle, based on the Floride. The model is nicely finished with an accurate interior. The baseplate is odd; the location of the engine is not clear and the rear axle has leaf springs, not likely with a rear engine. The Floride is light blue with a black coupe hardtop, but the parts are also supplied in the box to display it with a black drophead or open. (Pictured on page 191.57). 574325 Simca Oceane. Simca introduced the Oceane Plein Ciel in 1956, based on the Aronde saloon, to replace the Simca 9 Sport. This open sports car with a curved panoramic windscreen was up to date when launched. Though often compared to the Ford Thunderbird, it was not a commercial success, due to its high price. The model is accurate, nicely painted, with chrome-plated bumpers and hub caps and a well-detailed interior. The crowning glory is the detailed baseplate, which reveals a secret of the original car, the rigid rear axle on leaf springs, which precluded sports car roadholding. It seems odd at first sight that the car was called the Oceane; on the front and rear end it reads Aronde, the name of the saloon. Refer to photos from the Paris Motor Show and you will see that this is correct, evidence of the accuracy and authenticity of Norev models. (Pictured on page 191.57).
NOREV'S CLASSIC HOTCHKISS
By Hans-Georg SchmittAmong Norev's recent 1:43 model releases is 590004, the Hotchkiss Languedoc from 1949, based on the prewar Biarritz. The newly developed front wheel drive and the excellent build quality were the main reasons for the Languedoc's six victories in the Monte Carlo rally. This was, however, an expensive car, only accessible to the well-heeled, and production ceased in 1950. The model is well-finished with a detailed interior. An interesting feature is that the interior and windscreen are moulded in one piece, obviously produced along with the drophead component in one mould, because both are made from clear plastic and over-printed. The registration plates are not from 1949, but are the versions with single numbers from the old prewar registration areas. The Languedoc had front wheel drive, but the model's baseplate shows a rear differential in a rigid axle fixed on leaf springs, so possibly some other Hotchkiss models will come out later. Also included in the box is the open version's folded hood, so either version can be displayed.
(Editor's note: all the Norev Languedoc models I have seen are described as 'Biarritz' on the box, which may explain the baseplate detail and the number plates; so no doubt the prewar Hotchkiss will appear soon).

By Hans-Georg SchmittIn second half of 2004, BMW launched two new cars into their range. The 1-Series is totally new, the first BMW on the 'VW Golf' theme and with unusual features for that class; rear wheel drive and a longitudinal engine. You don't have the option of a six-cylinder engine under the long bonnet, only four cylinder petrol or diesel engines from 115 to 163 hp. The body follows the current design directives of BMW, rounded and straight edges. The front seats offer plenty of room, but in the back it is a bit cramped. The BMW 1-Series is now available in 1:87 scale in the typical black folding presentation box and BMW's part number is 80 41 0 308 610 Also new is the 5 Series Touring estate car. The front end looks like the saloon, but the tail end is less extreme. The accurate 1:43 model car is made by Kyosho in metallic silver with a black interior, the most popular colour scheme. The bonnet opens, to reveal a realistic engine replica. The car has Munich registration plates and also comes in a black folding presentation box. BMW's part number is 80 42 0 308 418.

FORMULA MODELS NEWS
By Colin FraserHere is the latest news from my 1:43 scale handbuilt Formula Models range: Following the release of FM15 at the end of May last year, we having been working on a number of new projects. We have held back with the 2001 and 2002 Indy 500 winners so as to be able to incorporate these two models together with the 2003 winner within the same decal production run. This is mainly due to the continued increase in cost of producing our models and the decline in overall sales. We have also been able finish the master for the 2004 Indy 500 winner and can now anounce the following models, released at the end of May 2005:
FM19 Marlboro Team Penske G Force Toyota Winner Indianapolis 500 2003 Gil de Deferran FM26 Team Penske Dallara Winner Indianapolis 500 2001 Helio Castro-Neves FM27 Marlboro Team Penske Dallara Winner Indianapolis 500 2002 Helio Castro-Neves FM29 Targent/Pioneer GForce Honda Winner Indianapolis 500 2004 Buddy Rice
BRINGING GIFTS from Nuremberg
By Hans-Georg SchmittAt Nuremberg Toy Fair this year, some model manufacturers gave special toy fair models or one of their new items as gifts to visitors. adp of Gustrow gave a 1938 Opel Kapitan Cabrio and 1952 EMW 340 hearse, both in 1:87 scale. Brumm of Italy gave a transparent Christmas tree ball with a red 1:43 Fiat 500 inside. (Pictured on page 190.05.30).
Busch had their new Toyota Land Cruiser J40 in special blue with white roof as their fair model, a limited edition of 1.500 pieces. Herpa donated as their 2005 fair model a red Renault R4, with appropriate printing (pale photo).
Czech company Kaden had a 1:160 scale Skoda Superb as their giveaway item. Maisto gave as a promo their 1:35 SLK in scale 1:35 with a pullback motor. Its bonnet was over-printed Maisto 2005.
From Minichamps came a BMW M3 GTR in silver 'Street Version', printed Nuremberg Fair Model 2005, a limited edition of 528 pieces. Norev donated their Citroen Xsara WRC Australian rally version, in which Sebastien Loeb became World Rally Champion 2004. The excellent and authentically travel-stained Xsara is a limited edition of 499 pieces.
Revell chose a model from their 1:64 range, a 1963 Chevrolet Impala in two-tone blue finished for the toy fairs in London, Nuremberg and Paris. Rietze's Toy Fair model was their new Seat Altea in a special shade of blue, with the plinth of the presentation case suitably printed.
Rio, which now belongs to Art and Best models, gave as their fair model a Citroen DS19 saloon, in red with a white roof.
From Schuco came two special models, one was a black Shelby AC Cobra with two white stripes, printed Toy Fair 2005. The other model was the now-traditional white Piccolo; this year their new Ford FK 1000 van.
Wiking presented a plastic Volks-wagen Phaeton in white with fair emblems overprinted and their sister company Siku offered a key ring with a diecast Porsche 911 GT2 in their newly introduced 1:87 scale (see facing page).
Finally Yat Ming's representative gave as a review sample their new 1:18 scale 1956 Lincoln Continental Mark II, accurately reproduced and impressively large in white. The bonnet, doors and boot lid all open and the doors are hinged like a real car.
BOOK REVIEWS
Hubley Toy Vehicles 1946 - 1965 by Steve Butler, 215mm x 280mm softbound, 160 pages, 500+ colour photos. ISBN 0-7643-1405-X. Schiffer Publishing Ltd, 4880 Lower Valley Road, Atglen, PA 19310 USA. Europe: Bushwood, 6 Marksbury Ave, Kew Gardens, Surrey, TW9 4JF, UK
Many MAR readers may be unfamiliar with Hubley Kiddie Toys, but most North American readers of a certain age will have owned at least one from the various Hubley ranges, manufactured in Lancaster, PA, USA until their takeover by Gabriel Industries in 1966. Pre-war they were cast iron; post war vehicles were diecast zinc alloy (called white metal by the author) and hard or soft plastic. The author focuses on the 1946-65 era, claiming that earlier production has already been well documented. According to the author, unlike many European ranges, Hubley annual catalogues accurately indicate dates of introduction/deletion and colour changes. Hence, the book strictly follows factory catalogues. Almost all listings are on the same page as the corresponding model photo and include dates of issue, colours, material, length, comments and a price guide value for condition: average, good or optimal. Excellent colour photos illustrate virtually all production, either from the author's collection or reproduced from the catalogues. There are separate entries on catalogues, Tinytoys, Real Types/Real Toys ranges (accurate, like early Matchbox cars, but slightly bigger at approx 1:58 scale), the fabulous metal kits from the Sixties, scaled between 1:18 and 1:22 (reissued as Gabriel kits), plastic kits in 1:24 scale, and Hubley promos in 1:24 scale plastic. But the real meat of the book is devoted to the basic Hubley Toys, simple, somewhat generic castings, usually without glazing or interiors and averaging between about six inches and 12 inches long, with single piece black rubber tyres. These listings are grouped by vehicle type; automobiles, trucks, construction, motorcycles, farm, aircraft, (boxed) sets, and miscellaneous items. Hubley was prolific, and these listings are very comprehensive. My only criticism is a lack of descriptive text about individual models. Some clearly have working features, and it would be very interesting to read about them in detail in this book. Steve Butler has also written a book devoted solely to Hubley Toy Catalogues. Recommended.

HISPANO-SUIZA by Ernest Schmidt d'Andres, Published by Editions d'Art SPE Barthelemy, 10, Rue de la Procession, 75015 Paris, France. Price 60 euros (c. £45.00). 207 pages, English-French text.
This is less a detailed dry history of Hispano-Suiza, more an abbreviated but still complete story, liberally punctuated by diversions into related matters. For example, the technical details of the famous Alfonso cars of the 1910 to 1915 period are supplemented not only by details of development of the car, but also by stories of King Alfonso XIII and the two assassination attempts which he survived. Descriptions of the factory, the history of the badge, the early engineering career of creator Marc Birkigt and many other such pieces abound. An example from the early pages: the name Hispano-Suiza derives not from the manufacturing element - much of that was in France of course - but from the early financing of the company by a Spanish individual, Damien Matieu, as well as the Swiss nationality of Marc Birkigt. The text has separate technical details to supplement the fine photographs of all the models featured and short informative but entertaining paragraphs relating to the cars. The book is very well-illustrated, with archive photos in black and white (of course), and modern ones in colour. This well-produced work will inform the most knowledgeable Hispano enthusiast whilst still being an entertaining read.

Les belles autos de NOREV by Didier Beaujardin, Bernard Botte and Denis Darotchetche. Published 2003 by Editions Grancher, 8 rue de Vaugirard; 75006 Paris, France. French text. 286 pages, 790+ photographs, some drawings. 220 x 290mm. Hardbound with dust jacket. ISBN 2-7339-0838-3. Available from publisher or from Norev SA, 70/72 avenue de Bohlen, 69518 Vaulx en Velin cedex, France.
A gentleman called Veron from Lyon, in the department of the Rhone, started his toy-making business soon after the Liberation at the end of the Second World War. His company's name was his own name in reverse. After making a range of various toys and watches for children, he launched his first 1:43 scale model cars, mostly with injection moulded plastic bodies and tin base plates. Windows were pierced, but there were no interiors. The plastic tyres were pressed on to wheel rims, made from a different type of plastic which was not compatible. Softeners were drawn out so the rims became soft and lost their shape. The plastic bodies of early Norevs also beacme deformed, many looking strange today. In the book the stories of the Norev company, the models and the founder's family are all told. Almost every model made over 50 years is shown and described. Only a few early rare birds are missing. It is interesting to see how the manufacture, finish and quality of the models has changed down the years.
All the models and their derivatives are listed, the different box styles are shown, and the excellent colour photographs will also be useful when restoring old models.
This book will be the ultimate reference source for all collectors of Norev models, but any collector will enjoy it, regardless of brand loyalty.

Borgward Isabella Punkt fur Punkt ein Meisterstuck (Point for point a Masterpiece) by Peter Kurze, Harm Coordes, German text 112 pages, 253 pictures, hardbound 215 x 245 mm. ISBN 3-7688-1551-X. Published by and available from Delius Klasing Verlag; Siekerwall 21; D-33602 Bielefeld, Germany.
Carl F W Borgward was the first to make a German car in the new American style with his Hansa 1500-1800 saloon, in Pontoon form. The Hansa was soon outdated, so in the early 1950s, he created a successor, at first named the Hansa again. When the first cars were ready to road test, a driver asked what pseudonym he should put on the car.
Borgward said 'Because of me, call it Isabella!' The new car thus got a female name. The first one left the assembly line on 10 June 1954, causing a stir, and becoming the most successful Borgward until the group's collapse in 1961. The Isabella came as a standard saloon or the more powerful TS and also as estate car, pickup, cabriolet and the exciting coupe. The authors tell the story clearly with many previously unseen photos.

Silberpfeile aus Bremen: Rennsport-wagen der Borgward-Werke by Heinrich Volker, German text. 96 pages, 125 pictures; Paperbound 210 x 295 mm. ISBN 3-927485-43-8. Published by Verlag Peter Kurze, Schwachhauser Heerstrasse 247a; D-28211 Bremen, Germany.
Borgward sports-racers were successful in 1950s international competition. Mostly they were silver metallic or unpainted aluminium. From 1953 Heinrich Volker was a development engineer at the Carl F W Borgward GmbH Bremen Automobile and Engine Works and for this book he interviewed former colleagues from the racing department and the prototype department. He starts with the INKA Record car from 1950, via the successful Borgward RS cars up to the co-operation with Cooper. He turned up many previously unpublished photographs, to produce a very interesing book.

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod WardBrooklin Collectors Club: It is usual for one-make clubs to be so effusive in praise of every product by that maker, that sometimes it verges on hagiography. It is refreshing, therefore, when the Editor of the Brooklin Collector, the esteemed Jack Patrick, takes a sideswipe at a Brooklin-made model. He says: 'Regarding the hearse produced for Budig of Germany (on the Ford Ranger), I would have thought a decal on the doors saying Coroner's Vehicle would have been more acceptable. I for one have never heard of a van being used as a hearse'. A number of hearse collectors read MAR, and they might like to comment. I can see why Jack would say this; British and US hearses are usually designed to look like large fancy station wagons, but as a bit of a fan of funeral vehicles myself, I have to say that in many other countries, particularly in Continental Europe, the tradition is different; many vehicles are based on commercial vans such as Citroen H, Ford Transit and large US vans, so Robert Budig's choice of model is not unheard-of. The Club's special Brooklin model for 2005 is BRK82 DeSoto Adventurer 1959 in white with gold roof and side flash.
It will cost £55.00, but if you want one, you'll have to join the BCC, phone Membership Secretary John Bowyer on 01276 473499
Cape Model and Toy Club: The Cape Model Collector, newsletter of the CMTC, edited by Glyn Murrell, wishes Hon President (and MAR contributor) Ron Gersbank well with his eye operations. I'm sure all MAR readers will want to join in with the good wishes for a speedy recovery. Ron had already suffered from glaucoma in one eye for some years, before more recently having cataracts in both eyes. He tells me, 'I think the elderly eye specialist, who has been attending to my glaucoma for 15 years, was reluctant to do the operations for my cataracts because he has what appears to be Parkinsons disease'. What a nightmare.
Nou daar's 'n ding. ('Now there's a thing', in Afrikaans, apparently). Fortunately this specialist has now retired and Ron has had the work done by a surgeon with a steadier hand. This means that we will be seeing more contributions to MAR from Ron soon. CMTC members get lots of information in their newsletter about goings-on in South Africa as well as news of the wider world of model and toy collecting, some of it gleaned from the internet. To join the club and get access to the gen, contact Secretary Graham Ramsay on 072 156 6806 at any hour.
South Hants Model Auto Club: Sue and Stu Leake, joint Editors of the SHMAC newsletter, have been inundated in articles from members, but they are not complaining. The latest issue includes lots of interesting material, including contributions from Dave Turner (on Fords), Stuart Brotchie (on his days working at a Citroen garage), John Kinchen (on Dinky Toys) and others. Dave and Morag Painter give a long and enthusiastic account of their visit to the Daytona 24 Hour Race as VIP visitors to the Brumos Team. Keeping up the race car content, Steven and Damian Good also describe their trip to the Sebring 12 Hour Race during a holiday in Florida. Mike Stanton has now joined the SHMAC, so no doubt members will soon be reading his contributions about record-breaking cars. If you want to join the Club, remember that it is expected for all members to make at least one contribution to the magazine. So ring Secretary Dave Painter on 01264 366408.
Wessex Model and Toy Collectors: Barry Lloyd, Editor of the WMTC newsletter, Smalltalk, continues to entertain us with his inexhaustible supply of chat, jokes and stories. He notes that his favourite Salisbury Swapmeet should be renamed the Slimmer's Swapmeet, because every time you go there is less of it. Let's hope the smaller turnout is not connected in any way with the Club's chosen charity, the Prostate Cancer Trust. When the club presented their £2,800 cheque, the Trust's representative spoke eloquently about the condition to a roomful of men of a certain age, who realised the significance of his words and took comfort from the fact that the disease is curable, given the funding.
If you'd like to help support this worthy cause, join the WMTC: contact Membership Secretary Doug Male on 01225 755043.
West Australian Model Collectors Club: Ian Hind, continues to fill the pages of Showcase, the WAMCC Club publication, with interesting stuff, including in the latest issue a history of Siku, features on new models and an article by Chris Williams describing how to get Corgi bargains. He visited the Corgi Classics website and clicked on 'Special Offer'. He was surprised and pleased to be able to track down two models that had eluded him (at full price) for six months. US51011 Sherman M4A3 tank with big square exhaust stacks was originally priced at £34.99 (AUD$88), but now available at £14.99. CC55108 Diamond T transporter with British Sherman tank was originally priced at £94.99, reduced by Corgi to £24.99 (over 60% saving). So, it seems collectors can now just go direct to Corgi's website and buy models at much less than the trade price, if they are prepared to a wait a few months until they are reduced. I wonder what their retail stockists think of that? You could save the membership fee and more if you followed the useful tips from the WAMCC. To join and read Showcase phone Ian on 934 9369 or email jhind@iinet.net.au
The Lledo Enthusiast and Variations Club: In Volume 6 number 3 of The Lledo Enthusiast, Bill Alexander comments as follows: 'Greetings to Lledo Enthusiast and Variation Club Members. We have a packed issue although I hope the headline doesn't sound too out of date. The announcement of Corgi's decision to drop the Lledo name has filled my post-bag; however, Leicester can sleep easy as only a few members have decided to stop collecting, at least so far. We continue to review Lledo and Corgi/Lledo models and The Lledo Enthusiast will persist until the end of this volume: ie Vol 6 No 6 September 2005. I must apologise to the many members that have asked me to carry on beyond that date, but as I have listed most of the real Lledo models already it is difficult to see a future for a Lledo Enthusiast when the product has ceased to exist. There is also a matter of enthusiasm. Most of us expected this to happen sooner or later, and as Corgi own the rights and the tools, they can continue production and call the models whatever they wish. I have followed the Lledo story with interest from 1983 and like all good stories: it now has a beginning, a middle and an end'. That seems to be a full stop on the story, and Bill Alexander has fulfilled his chosen role admirably, for as long as the Lledo name survived. He can be contacted at 33 North Town Moor, Maidenhead, Berks SL6 7JR.
The Miniature MG Car Club: President and Editor of the club newsletter Miniature Garage Alan Long is trying to make payments as easy as possible for existing and potential members. As well as the usual cheques, drafts etc, he can accept credit card payments by Paypal and has agreed for a member to be 'US Treasurer', collecting dues from US members and then passing on a consolidated cheque to Alan. I hope this works; the banking system may regard it as 'money laundering' under the recent anti-terrorist measures. When we opened a bank account in France to accept payments from French subscribers, then transferred the larger sums thus accumulated to ourselves in our own UK account, our French bank informed us that these transactions were being monitored by the authorities as money laundering and advised us to close the account. To the irritation and inconvenience of our French friends, we had to do so. Other innocent transactions that fall foul of these rules include asking a friend if you can use his credit card for a purchase because you have forgotten to bring yours with you, paying by credit card and asking for goods to be sent to an address different from the cardholder registered address, or having goods invoiced to one person or company, but the bill paid by another. These were all common practices among collectors and dealers in the past, but are now forbidden. Anyway, Alan continues to publish lots of useful information for MG collectors, including a review of the Vanguards MG ZT saloon and Dave Gilbert's 1:76 scale white metal kits. If you'd like to read more, contact Alan Long at his new address: 3 Thorniecroft Drive, Condorrat, Cumbernauld G67 4JT, Scotland, or email minimgcarclub@blueyonder.co.uk
