EDITORIAL
by Rod WardHERE WE ARE AGAIN!
I hope you had a suitably festive season in spite of all the negative economic news.
Here we are again, to start another MAR year, our 28th in continuous publication. Congratulations to those of you who have managed to stay the course since we started. To say that this year will be even more ‘interesting’ than the last one is an understatement. Goodness knows what we will see in the way of new model releases, range closures and retirements. We already know that some ranges have severely curtailed release their programmes, and the owners of some companies may decide that this is a good time to leave the field of model cars. In my experience, however, a time of economic difficulty is an ideal time to start up a new venture; we began Modelauto in the deep 1970s recession.
Whatever happens, MAR will try to keep you informed, and to keep you entertained as well.
Happy New Year from Biggles, our canine correspondent
Thank you, to everyone who has been asking after my health recently. I am now almost 14 years old and still enjoying life, in spite of being totally deaf and not seeing too well out of one eye.
AUTO REVIEW ON JOWETT AND OTHER TYKES
The latest Auto Review book is now available, on Jowett (with an appendix on other vehicles built in Yorkshire; an extensive and detailed listing, you may be surprised to find). For those who didn’t know, a ‘tyke’ is someone born in Yorkshire, so I don’t qualify, as I come from the other side of the Pennines.
My latest appeal for material to include in future Auto Review books: planned titles include Humber, Wolseley, Sunbeam (plus Talbot), British tractors and traction engines, aviatrices (famous lady pilots), Alvis, Armstrong-Siddeley, Aston Martin, Lagonda and British coachbuilding firms. If you have illustrations (adverts, brochures, your own photographs etc) or personal anecdotes you can offer, please send them to me as soon as possible for inclusion in these publications.
OXFORD REVISED SCHEDULE
Victims of their own success, Oxford had so many repeat orders for items released earlier in 2008 that it disrupted their production schedule, delaying releases of some new models and pushing some late 2008 models into early this year. This is the revised release schedule:

RECENT MARSH MODELS
Marsh Models have produced 1:43 kit or handbuilt models (MK10) of the 1989 Mercedes-Benz C9 Le Mans 1989, all three race cars. Other current productions include MM165 Lola T600 John Paul Jr Miami Grand Prix 1983, the last race by the team before the car was sold, MM169 1967 Ferrari P4 LM and MM191 Lister Chevy Jim Rathmann. John Simons says, ‘We are currently having problems with Van Merksteijn Racing over the use of their name on the RS Spyder, so there is now a possibility this will not be released’.
OPEL-LOTUS CHRONOS
A new 1:43 handbuilt model in Michel Ducleux’s Alezan Collector range is AC25 Opel-Lotus Chronos by Pininfarina 1991 in yellow, a limited edition of 200 models.
RED RUN 1:43
Resin handbuilt from Italy: Fiat Cinquecento Speedster simpatico, available in three colour choices: pearl white, red or yellow, limited to only 30 of each colour. Contact: info@redrunmodels.com
MB 1:43 F1 MODEL CARS
Dick Browne has passed on news to us about MB Modelcars (Broni and Martin) who make 1:43 Formula 1 white metal kits and built models. Broni Brezna says they intend to make ‘less demanding and cheaper models, comparable with Minichamps’ plus highly detailed models of the Fittipaldi FD04 Ford 1976-77 and the Martini MK23 Ford 1978 of René Arnoux. See www.mbmodelcars.eu.
TWH Models Oshkosh military truck
by Robin GodwinTWH Models' latest Oshkosh 977 A2 HEMTT (Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck) 8x8 cargo truck in 1:50 scale. The 977 series is used for other applications such as fuel tanker, articulated Patriot Missile tractor, and bridge transporter. TWH is a US firm whose products are diecast in China. They also produce a range for Sword Models, mostly trucks, to the same level of detail; Chuck Sword is the man behind DHS Diecast Collectables. NZG distributes TWH models in Europe and pictured some in recent catalogues. TWH models are described as ‘museum quality’ and I can confirm that description; virtually everything works or opens. The opening doors fit so snugly that I haven’t yet been able to wedge the special tool into a gap to get them open! The 2500lb capacity Grove crane is fully functional. The price is $179.00 from US suppliers, outstanding value. UK suppliers charge £132.00 to £222.00, reflecting stock obtained at a rate closer to $2 to the £1 than today’s value. Surely VAT can’t make that much difference. TWH set standards that other manufacturers should pay attention to. There is a dedicated UK website to visit: www.twh-reviews.co.uk

Pocket Guide to BRITAINS Farm Model BALERS & COMBINES 1967-2007 By David Pullen. Veloce Publishing Ltd, 33 Trinity Street, Dorchester, Dorset DT1 1TT. Tel: 01305 260068. Hardbound. 176 pages. 148mm x 210mm. 49 colour photos. ISBN 978-1-84584-194-2. £16.99 UK, $33.95 USA
We’ve all seen the extensive range of tractor models by Britains. But they also made balers and combines, all of which are described and pictured in this comprehensive guide, by the author of A pocket guide to Britains model tractors 1948-1998. David Pullen gives background history to the equipment, for townies who don’t know a baler from a pitchfork. plus three useful indexes, by model, by issue date and by issue code. This will fill a reference gap to identify Britains models.
Rod WardArgus Illustré MINIALUXE. SAFAM, BP 40, 78230 Le Pecq, France. 210 x 297mm softbound. 60 pages. 2500+ listings. 350 colour photos €26, Europe €27
The latest Argus listing of toy marques takes us to Minialuxe’s l:43 and l:32 ranges from 1953, including the Tacot old-timers. Also covered in this publication are many recent promotional models. The rise in the value of the Euro unfortunately makes this 60 page A4 publication cost around £25.00.

Club News
Collated by Rod WardThe Cape Model Collector, of the Cape Model and Toy Club, notes that Norev (named by reversing the name of founder Veron) make some Spot- On open cars, appropriately ‘No-Tops’ when reversed. These reversals must be a Southern hemisphere thing, like having hot weather at this time of year. Also in a warm climate, Showcase, the West Australian Model Collectors Club magazine, mentions a collection of 900-plus 1:18 models for sale at $100,000, which could not be split. I think a new sun hat is in order for the seller. Smalltalk, the newsletter of the Wessex Model and Toy Collectors, describes their quiz night where one of the questions was ‘What was the only model Dinky made to 1:18 scale?’ Someone suggested the Avro Vulcan! ‘What a box that would have needed’ mused editor Barry Lloyd. The answer? The Supertoys Lawnmower, of course. Sue Leake, editor of the South Hants Model Auto Club’s Wheel Nuts, hates being addressed as ‘Ms’. Even enclosing manuscript for an article? Wheel Bearings, the Maidenhead Static Model Club newsletter, notes that the Club was founded in 1969, so 2009 will be a big year of celebrations for them.
