Model Auto Review News

January 2004

EDITORIAL
By Rod Ward

ANOTHER NEW YEAR FOR MODEL AUTO REVIEW

So, another New Year begins here for Model Auto Review, as it does for all of us.

2004 will also represent our 22nd year in continuous publication, a grand old age which we never suspected this publication would attain when it began. I hope you had a jolly festive season, and you are now suitably fortified for whatever this year will bring. If we are to believe the advance lists I have seen from some of the diecast manufacturers, there are thousands of new releases in prospect. Let us hope that they find enough buyers to keep a healthy balance sheet. Once again, as so often after the Christmas peak sales season passes, I am hearing rumours and receiving embargoed stories of some brands changing ownership, and others in a parlous financial situation. Everyone in the trade, at all levels, just hopes that there will be a period of stability in the industry this year.

From this issue onwards there will be news items on 2004 planned releases. Are you ready?

LESS PRODUCTION FROM THE ARTISAN FIRMS

Not everyone in our world is as confident about the size of the potential market for model car sales as the big diecast manufacturers seem to be.

Many of the smaller 'artisan' makers of kits and handbuilt models have closed down in the last couple of years, and others have just not produced much in the way of new releases.

Now we have some more formal announcements to add. In this issue, for instance, Georges Pont tells us that he has put up for sale almost 200 masters from his CCC range.

I have also now decided that there will be no new subjects in the kit and handbuilt ranges made and distributed by Modelauto Ltd, and the masters are for sale.

Last year we had a series of mysterious advertisements in MAR offering an anonymous model car business for sale. I can now reveal that this was Gerald Wingrove's truly unique large scale handbuilt model range. Gerald's own collection has been auctioned by Bonhams, and he has found a buyer for much of the wincol.com model making arm and its assets. The Wingrove name is not included in the sale, however, and it is still for sale to anyone who wants to get into the large scale model field, utilising the famous title.

RESPONSES TO OUR CHANGES

I have had some interesting responses to my Editorial in MAR 178, and to the changes made in that issue. The first telephone call came from a manufacturer who wanted to show his support for the future of MAR by booking some colour advertising for this year!

A Model Auto Review stockist also quickly responded by increasing his regular order.

A long-time subscriber decided to buy two gift subscriptions for friends. Countless letters, faxes, emails and phone calls from readers have offered their support for the future 'whatever you do with MAR'. I am grateful for all of this support, and for the positive and helpful suggestions passed on by readers, many of which will be considered for the future.

Here is the full programme from Brooklin Models for 2004. To mark the 30th year of Brooklin Models, they will release three Anniversary Specials, representing the three main decades on which the Brooklin Collection is based, the 1950s, 1940s and 1930s. The Making of Brooklin BRK 100xPierce Silver Arrow
By Dick Browne

Since the beginning, in 1974, Brooklin models have been given a BRK reference from BRK 1, usually in a consecutive sequence with very few exceptions. In late 2002 I noticed in the Brooklin new release schedule for 2003 that the numbers skipped from BRK 99 to BRK 102. I contacted Brooklin's Managing Director, Nigel Parker, to inquire about the missing numbers. Nigel told me then, off the record, that the numbers were being saved for the Brooklin 30th Anniversary in 2004. He went on to say that he would like to remake the original BRK 1, the 1933 Pierce Silver Arrow as BRK 100. At that time I suggested to Nigel that he consider the subsequent 1934-5 Silver Arrow Coupe that was built as a production model, albeit in limited numbers. Nigel said that my idea might be considered and requested that I get further information on availability of cars to measure and photograph. As a result I checked out Pierce-Arrow on the Web and found that the Vice-president of the Pierce-Arrow Society, Marc Hamburger, lives here in Atlanta. A phone call to him got me an invitation to visit.

Marc owns a 1936 Pierce-Arrow 1601 sedan, identical to the one produced by Brooklin as part of their 25th Anniversary set in 1999. It also appeared as a Brooklin standard, BRK 81 in 2000. At one time he also owned a 1937 Pierce-Arrow Travelodge similar to Brooklin BRK 80. As a result of this meeting a licensing agreement between the Pierce-Arrow Society and Brooklin Models was arranged, to make models of other Pierce-Arrows in the future.

Most importantly, Brooklin and I had a new friend.

After some correspondence, phone conversations and the sending of pictures, Nigel decided that a model of the 1934-5 Pierce Silver Arrow Coupe would be appropriate. I thought the matter was closed and that Brooklin would proceed with the model. To my surprise, Nigel phoned again to ask if I knew of the location of this car. A hurry-up call to Marc Hamburger gave me a list of several Silver Arrow Coupe owners. Two were in the Southern California area. As we were heading out there in late November to visit our oldest son and his family, I wrote to both of them. The next week, the phone rang and it was Harris Laskey, the renowned West Coast car collector, inviting me to measure and photograph his car. We arrived in the LA area on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. On Wednesday morning, after fighting through Los Angeles area traffic for an hour and a half we arrived at the Laskey's estate in Pacific Palisades. Ringing the bell opened the gates and we drove onto his beautiful six acres up in the hills.

The magnificent car was brought out and personally washed by Harris and his gracious wife, Bettina before we could begin our photography. I had never measured a car before for a model. Nigel provided me with five sheets of drawings that asked for 88 separate measurements. It was a bigger task than I had imagined. Cars, even from the 1930s, have few flat surfaces.

The Pierce Silver Arrow Coupe is a big brute of a car by today's standards. It has a 144-inch wheelbase and stretches out nearly 18 feet overall while standing almost six feet tall. Only three 1935 Silver Arrow V-12 Coupes are known to exist. Aware that I was working with a car worth, probably, a quarter of a million dollars made me very careful in touching it to take its measurements.

While I was measuring the car, my wife, Jo Ann was taking 60 photographs from every conceivable angle inside and outside the car. We can only hope we got it all right so Brooklin Models can do justice to this beautiful classic car.

We'll know how we did when BRK 100x is released on September 30, 2004. The first version will be finished in very pale gold with gold plated brightwork. It will be one of three models finished in this scheme being produced to celebrate the Brooklin Models 30th anniversary. These three models represent Brooklin's three main decades of American cars. In addition to this model for the Thirties, a 1947 Cadillac Series 62 Sedanet, BRK 105x, is scheduled for late July release to honour the Forties and a 1952 Chrysler New Yorker Newport Two-door Hardtop, BRK 110x, is scheduled for a late May release to honor the Fifties. All three models will be produced in a limited quantity of 999 each. As an enthusiastic Brooklin collector it was exciting to be involved in this project. We shall wait impatiently to see the end product, BRK 100x. And what about BRK 101? This turned out, happily, to be an old favourite of mine, the 1952 Muntz Jet that was released on January 15, 2004.

NEWS FROM BRITAIN

BROOKLIN PLYMOUTH

The latest 1:43 handbuilt American car from Brooklin is BRK103, 1956 Plymouth Plaza two door Club sedan, pictured in colour elsewhere in this issue. Brooklin have given us this backgound information on the car: 1955 saw Plymouth transformed from 'Old Maid' to 'Startling New' with brand new up to date styling and a host of new features.

In 1956 minor revisions were made, such as rear fins and new side trim, coupled with mechanical improvements. Stylist Virgil Exner referred to the revisions as airfoil styling. The Plaza was the entry level Plymouth, but despite the restrained amount of trim and single colours it was still an attractive automobile. Over 43,000 Club Sedans found buyers in 1956, a year which saw a major break with tradition.

WOT, NO P6 2000?

The Vanguards Ford Cortina which replaced the proposed Rover P6 2000 in the 2003 catalogue is numbered VA07303. A reader asked why he couldn't have that particular P6. The reason will be clear to anyone interested in modern industrial methods. When model companies choose subjects nowadays they go for something which gives lots of optional versions. these may not just be different colours or liveries, but involve minor body changes, which are designed in at the toolmaking stage. So, if a bus model will be released with single doors, then twin doors, and maybe a different destination panel, they can be incorporated in the mould design. But in order to save on mould costs, only a single set of casting tools is used, which are altered to make the next version. This is a 'one-way' process; you can't go back and do a single door version that you forgot to make, once you have altered the tools. The Vanguards Rover P6 was originally released as a 2000, then the tools were changed to make the 3500 V8 version. Someone decided to announce another 2000 P6, as an 'Anniversary Model', without realising that the point of no return had been reached with the tooling. So the Rover had to be replaced, with a Cortina.

The Vanguards limited edition of the Ford Cortina Mark I is Malibu Gold, to mark the Ford centenary. Corgi's PR folk made the following statement about this model, 'Part of the Vanguards anniversary series, the model is a 1:43 scale replica of the Cortina Mark I, which was the first-ever rear wheel drive car to be built by Ford (our italics). The Cortina first went on sale in the UK in 1962, and over one million were sold by the time the Mark II was introduced'.

MACH ONE MODELS

Following the pictures of new record car models from Mach One Models in MAR 148 (Schmid Orpheus, Dixon dart and Stapp Jupiter, plus the Windjet, pictured earlier) which have revived interest in this category among a number of readers, here is the list of future 1:43 kit or handbuilt releases planned in this range, but we have no idea when any will be made, of course:

19 Green Monster 1964 *
20 Renault Shooting Star 1956
21 MG Ex181 Record Car
24 Napier Railton 1939
26 White Triplex 1929 *
27 Markley Bros Belly tank Lakester *
28 Sunbeam Tiger 1926
29 Bob Rufi Streamliner 1940
30 Austin Healey Streamliner 1956
34 Packard 905 1919
36 Baker Electric Torpedo

* = different version of car already in range

One additional model is planned in the 1:43 scale Water Speed Series: WSR3 Bluebird K4 prop rider 1952

Four more models are also planned in the 1:20 scale LSR Legends series, to follow the Bluebird CN7 1964 already available.

WESTERN FORD E04A

Some good news for Ford fans: In the absence of the long-promised 'coffin nose' Ford from the soon-to-be-revived Somerville range, Western Models have nipped in smartly with a new 1:43 white metal handbuilt model of the Ford E04A two door saloon from 1939-1948. The UK retail price of Western's Ford is around £67.50.

The process of bringing the Somerville range back into production is continuing, but painfully slowly, as the new owners familiarise themselves with the masters and moulds. We have been told to expect a relaunch of the range this year.

NO SUN EXPANSION

It come as no surprise to many readers to have confirmation that the Sun Motor Co range will not expand in future. Some kits and handbuilt models were produced for the Sun range by Alan Smith (now Hartsmith Models), and these will in future be incorporated in the Hartsmith range (Diamond T, Scammell and Rotinoff Super Atlantic). In addition, some subjects from the Sun range will be re-mastered and reissued by Hartsmith, including the Wynns Super Pacific. Remaining items from the Sun Motor Co range have been selling at reduced prices over the last few months, while stocks last. There is still quite a substantial stock left of many items, though some are sold out, and none will be re-made by Sun Motor Co in future. There have also been decisions made about the future of the other related model ranges distributed by Modelauto Ltd.

There will be no new releases in the 1:43 Bugattiana range. When current stocks of kits and handbuilt models are sold, no more will be produced of any previously-released subject. The same applies to the Rapide 1:43 range, many of which are already deleted, and none will be re-made once they are sold out. Those masters which were purchased some years ago from Gérard Dahinden's Epokit-Belle Epoque range but not so far re-released will never now be made in the Rapide range. All masters for the Sun Motor Co, Bugattiana and Rapide ranges are for sale, complete with remaining unsold stocks, components etc where appropriate. Anyone interested in specific items should contact Modelauto Ltd, 81 Main Street, Monk Fryston, Leeds LS25 5DU, UK. The Bijou range of kits and transkits will continue as before, though currently there are no new subjects in development.

A ROXLEY MODELS recent release, mastered by Bill Barnes, is a Raleigh three wheel van 1932, Tannoy, with loudspeaker on the roof. Bill intends to continue developing models of three wheelers and microcars in his own range, and has it in mind to make a series of modern Vespa three wheel trucks, still popular among market stall holders and other small traders in Italy. He is currently working on a pattern for a Velorex, a small car which was made in large quantities in Czechoslovakia, resembling a three wheeler sidecar without a motorbike, but few survive today.

EXIT GERALD

As part of the process of his retirement from the model car world, model maker par excellence Gerald Wingrove auctioned much of his own collection at Bonhams sale last December. This sale included various original Meccano drawings and data sheets with models including Dinky aircraft and a pack of Mettoy Playcraft Corgi Toys original drawings for Rolls-Royce, Corvette Sting Ray and others, including an original four-times size solid zinc master for the Stingray and other toys that he created for Corgi and Dinky. In all Bonhams took over £100,000 for 72 lots. Gerald notes, 'About three months ago we sold a fully detailed and complete Duesenberg (and delivered it to its new owner) for £12k. Bonhams sold a Duesey chassis built at the same time for £15k. This year we built and sold three complete and fully detailed 2.3 Alfa models for £9k each, Bonhams sold the chassis built at the same time for £12k in an open auction. This should settle any comments that our work is over-priced! Although there may be a slight premium here for the Wingrove name, I think it shows that there is a big interest in 1:15 scale fully detailed models of classic cars. 1:43 is too small and 1:8 too large for more discerning collectors when compared to this scale. If anyone is looking to make a name for himself, and can raise the finance, we have a proven recipe here for the asking, patterns mould, data photos and plans, together with the website, are all available for sale. Offers over £65K considered.'

Gerald has also written a new book, The Art of the Automobile in Miniature. This volume (above) describes his life's work, picturing in sumptuous colour every highly detailed 1:15 model car he and Phyllis have made over three decades. There are anecdotes about the famous owners and designers they met in the process, as well as technical descriptions of the process of model manufacture. The book is published by Crowood Press and costs £25.00 ($39.95). Its ISBN number is 1 86126 632 4.

CCC DISPOSALS

Georges Pont tells us that he is reducing the size of his CCC range, by disposing of all his 1:43 masters for postwar vehicles. In future he will concentrate on pre-war subjects. All masters will be sold complete with moulds, existing stocks of parts, decal and photo-etching films etc. In all there are almost 200 such masters available, mostly French and American subjects, to be sold as one large lot, or in related groups. Georges will not sell any of them singly. Regular readers will not need a detailed list of CCC models, as they have often been described and pictured in past issues of MAR. Many road cars and competition cars, a few emergency vehicles, and about 15 never-released Le Mans cars are included in the sale. The CCC range has grown considerably in recent years, and it has become difficult to obtain many kits, as Georges has been unable to keep up with demand. He will be concentrating on the pre-war cars in his range in future, so perhaps delivery problems will eventually ease for Georges.

New kits and handmodels planned for release this year by CCC include these:

F176 Rolls-Royce 20/25 Continental Park Ward 1934
F177 Voisin Biscuter C31 prototype 1952
F178 Citroen DS bodyshell: Motor Show display
F179 Salmson S4E coupe
OV9 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Indianapolis 2003 winner

ARGUS FRENCH DINKY

The third part of the Argus de la Miniature coverage of French Dinky Toys is in issue 224. It includes the 800 series, Supertoys and military models, with colour illustrations and detailed tables on 48 A4 pages. The price is ?13.00 in France, ?13.50 elsewhere in Europe from SAFAM, Argus de la Miniature #224, BP40, F78231 Le Pecq Cedex, France

First Gear has announced a new 1:34 vintage truck, a tandem axle Mack L with various body options, as made from 1940 to 1953. Although no L-Model Macks were produced during the Second World War, more than 12,000 of them were made in all. The first releases are a new freight body, plus tow and stake options. The cab-chassis consists of more than 90 parts including opening wind-shield with individual wipers, opening hood sides with fully detailed Mack engine, Bulldog hood ornament, radiator cap, fuel filler cap and side mirrors. The model is 9.3 inches (2325 mm) long. The new freight body has a functioning rear roll-up door, detailed interior, bumper pads, hand-painted marker and directional lights, and mudflaps, top right.

The Holmes 650 double-boom tow body has a diamond plate bed with spotlights and fire extinguisher, cross member with safety beacons and pulley detail, strung cable with lift hooks, cable reel, rear jacks and pto shaft. There is also a cradle rear lift, top centre. A new stake body option is also available (above) with hand-painted wood-grain floor, stake sides and tail gate and a photoetched expanded steel screen in the headache rack.

First Gear's latest trailer for the Ford F-250 Crew Cab pickup is a new 1:34 gooseneck stock trailer with extruded aluminum side detail, spare tyre, jack stand and kingpin hitch centre right. Functioning parts include a full-swing rear door with opening sliding door. The interior has an aluminum-look non-skid floor, drop door above the gooseneck and divider gate. The trailer is 10 inches (250 mm) long, while the combination pickup truck and trailer measures 16 inches long (400 mm). It is now available in Black Angus Cattle Ranch livery.

FIRST GEAR DODGE and IH

First Gear have also launched a 1:25 Dodge Cargo Van and a 1:34 International 4400 Digger Derrick.

The all-new 1:25 Dodge Cargo Van features opening driver's and passenger doors as well as opening dual rear and side doors. The hood also opens to allow reveal the detailed Magnum engine, and the body interior is available with the optional cargo bulkhead, shelves and cabinets. There is an amber safety beacon, plus a roof-mounted ladder rack with extension ladder, short ladder, and storage tubes.

First Gear's International 4400 digger derrick, made from more than 180 parts, was developed from factory drawings provided by Altec Industries, leading manufacturer of digger derricks. The boom swivels 360 degrees and is poseable for travel or for work. A centre boom extension with functioning cable and cable hook, auger, pole tongs, functioning front and rear outriggers and pads, rear deck hitch, hydraulic fluid tank, winch spool with rope, operator's control seat with joystick controls, tool reel, fire extinguisher, and much more.

ENCO TO RETURN

Bill Barnes tells us that Pete Comben, who moved his business from England to Germany in recent years, intends to relaunch the 1:43 white metal Enco range.

The Enco range, begun by the late lamented Ernie Knott, was always cast by Pete, who took the range over on Ernie's retirement. Unfortunately Pete was unable to continue production, but he plans to bring it back soon. The new range will incorporate all the old favourites, we are told, plus the models made or planned by Mike Simpson, another Brit resident in Germany. Mike has had to discontinue his model making activities due to ill-health, so his models will be marketed by Enco, including an advertising trailer and components to make stretch limousine versions of saloon cars. Production of the new range will be carried out at Thomas Wolter's Tin Wizard facility in Germany.

DAYS GONE IN NEWS

The latest series of part-publications from your newsagent with a free model is a new trucks and vans series from Corgi. Lledo Days Gone commercial vehicles are being offered in new 'retro' liveries, each with a publication relating to the vehicles. From the advertising we have seen it is not clear if this is a publication with a free model vehicle, or a model vehicle with a free publication. 'What's the difference?' you ask. Well, if it's the former, there is no VAT payable on UK retail sales, whereas the latter includes VAT (almost 15% of the retail price). That could mean 15% more profit, or less profit...

While on the topic of part-publications, how about the one which includes a component for a 1:8 scale Fokker Dr1? 100 parts at £3.99 each. Would you buy a plane for almost 400 quid if you've still got to build it?
