EDITORIAL
by Rod Ward

ANOTHER YEAR BEGINS

We’re back, and a new year begins, with a period of fasting to get rid of the avoir-dupois added over the festive season.

If you are one of those folk who takes time to adjust to something new, you will be surprised to know that 2010 is the sixth year that MAR has been published in A5 size. Doesn’t time fly when you aren’t paying attention?

Some readers and contributors, aware that I pass the magic 65 mark in Autumn 2010, have asked me (anxiously?) if MAR will continue after I begin to draw my old age pension. The answer is yes. As long as MAR continues to cover its costs, I will continue to produce it. If its income ever ceased to cover its production costs, or if contributors stopped sending in articles and news items, it would have to stop, but the future of MAR is secure for now.

EMAIL UPDATES

A number of readers are already receiving ‘eMAR’, our email update between MAR issues, with news of what we are doing, special offers etc. If you would like to be added to our electronic mailing list, send your email address to us, and you will get eMAR in future.

AUTO REVIEW: DAF CARS

The latest Auto Review book is now available, on DAF Cars. The next titles will be on Tractors & Traction Engines, Alvis and the Sherpa van. Future subjects include Peugeot (to mark their 200th anniversary), Aston Martin & Lagonda, Hillman, Singer, Jensen, Allard, Railton, AC, Lotus, aviatrices and many other subjects (20+ in our plan so far). If you have any illustrations (advertisements, sales brochures, your own snapshots etc) or any personal anecdotes on any subject, send them to me as soon as possible for inclusion in future publications. I also invite suggestions for future titles; all ideas welcome...

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod Ward

Wessex Smalltalk, the newsletter of the Wessex Model and Toy Collectors, notes two examples of the pre-Corgi Mettoy CWS drinks lorry sold on the internet for £789, and £1750. I sold a slightly chipped example from my swapmeet stall 30 years ago for £2.50. No, I shouldn’t have kept it. I didn’t like it. Maidenhead Static Model Club’s newsletter Wheel Bearings has become a very attractive and informative publication of late. Retiring Editor, Cliff Maddock, is setting the bar very high for his successor. He even had useful notes on how to re-set a computer service interval indicator in a Volvo. I’ll try it in my Peugeot; it drops 50 miles off the interval every time I start the car up. In Wheel Nuts, the South Hants Model Auto Club magazine, Dave and Morag Painter describe the new Bloodhound SSC project to drive a British car at over 1,000mph. That rather puts in the shade Dave’s usual preference for German Porsches that can barely make 200mph. Editor Keith Allen of Showcase, the West Australian Model Collectors Club magazine, seems to have left his ‘history of the British car’ articles in favour of recycled model features. That’s a pity. Will Roe, President of the Coventry Diecast Model Club, is doing his usual accomplished job as Editor of Wheelspin, the CDMC magazine. Museum visits are high on the agenda, with recent features on The Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon, Bovington Tank Museum and the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Collection.

Book Reviews

PORSCHE Zeittafel alle Daten und Fakten seit 1931 (Porsche Timetable: all data and facts) by Matthias Röcke. German text, 128 pages, 155 photos. Hard-bound 275 x 300mm. Published by and available from Heel Verlag GmbH, Gut Pottscheid 53639 Königswinter, Germany. €14.95. ISBN 978-3-86852-101-6.
What would you like to know about Porsche, the company or family? The facts are set out here; the firm, the cars and competition victories from foundation to today. The complete Porsche history is set out on 14 linked folding pages, three metres long in total, with many photographs from the Porsche archives. This is a useful history of the sports car manufacturer, but unfortunately the recent dramatic events could not be included. The unexpected incidents which happened around the planned takeover of VW by Porsche and the financial disaster which followed are not described here.
Hans-Georg Schmitt

100 Years of Innovations and Excellence, English text. 216 pages, 270 photos, hardbound in slipcase. 240 x 340mm. Published by and available from ID L´Edition, 9 rue des Artisans, 67210 Bernardswiller, France. €58. ISBN 978-2-915626-51-3.
2009 was memorable for the Bugatti factory at Molsheim; it was the centenary of the industrial site. It offered an opportunity to honour the memory of Ettore Bugatti, and also those who came after him. Eight authors describe a century of history. The family of Ettore Bugatti is described, and the rise and fall of the company is traced from the day in 1909 when the first Bugatti cars were made in an old dye-works. The factory buildings use today as an aircraft component plant is covered in words and pictures; Hispano Suiza took over the Bugatti plant in 1963. Then we finally see the re-birth of car manufacture in Molsheim under Vokswagen control.
Hans-Georg Schmitt
