NEW FOR 2000
We have lots of early news of 2000 releases this time, with much more to follow next month. An indication of just how hard some manufacturers are finding the current trading situation has been seen in the relative modesty of many displays at the trade toy fairs this year, and in their more restrained catalogues.
The chill wind felt by most smaller artisan firms over the past few years is now, it seems, gnawing at the vitals of the big boys as well. An ageing pool of collector customers, not being replaced by younger blood, has finally made its mark on the wider market. This means that quantities of any one model subject sold are much smaller, so there have to be more subjects made, to maintain sales volume. It remains to be seen if there are enough customers to support such extensive programmes. Lots of long lists coming up in MAR, therefore, but a more fragile profit situation for the makers.
I'm told that quite a few ranges are up for sale, as their proprietors wish to retire, but the buying fever among big corporations trying to acquire diecast ranges seems to have cooled. Reports from the USA suggest that Mattel's diecast Ferrari sales are not up to hoped-for levels, and also that their stock (share) value is only a quarter of its all-time high. It's going to be another interesting year!

ST PETERSBURG NEWS
By Leonid KhoykhinLatest from St Petersburg Tram Collection:
TRAMS: The Brussels PCC is ready now (149). The new PCC body style was designed by La Brugeoise for Brussels and in 1949 tram 5018 originally built in 1935 was rebuilt as the prototype of the new Brussels PCC fleet. Deliveries started in 1951 and by 1953 the whole batch of 50 cars was in service. The new cars were very popular so Brussels ordered 30 PCCs for delivery in 1956 and 75 more for 1957-58. This order used trucks, electrical equipment and other components salvaged from Kansas City PCCs 501-585. In 1970-71 16 more Brussels PCCs were built , this time using components salvaged from Johnstown PCCs. In total, between 1951 and 1971, Brussels received 172 PCCs (171 built for the city plus a Hamburg demonstrator, purchased in 1957). In the 1970s the trolley poles were replaced by pantographs and by 1978 all converted to one-man operation. Many are still in service in Brussels now.
BUSES: Two Detroit Twin Coach buses are ready now. First of them is a Model 40 from 1929. Detroit had a large fleet of these buses. In October 1936 Detroit Department of Street Railways ordered a fleet of 500 Ford Transit buses and another order for 250 Transits was placed a year later. By early 1938 DSR began to retire the old buses, including the 1928/29 Twin Coaches. Because these Twins had a very durable design, some being cut down to open top charter buses, they were popular in Detroit. Open Twins were remained in service until the end of the Second World War. By Terry G LeonardFirst Gear, Inc. of Peosta, Iowa has just released a 1:30 scale 1949 Dodge Power Wagon and a 1:4 scale vintage fuel can bank. The Power Wagon is available with three body options, brush fire unit, tow truck, or express body pickup. The cab features a fully detailed interior, opening hood (bonnet) sides with an accurately detailed 230.2 cu. in. six cylinder L head engine, hand painted marker lights and door handles, and optional roof-mounted emergency beacon. Accessories are provided with the various loads including a spare tire, fire extinguisher, jerry can, rake, shovel, axe, and specialised cargo options. The die-cast metal vintage fuel can is actually a bank (money box). It stands more than four inches (100mm) high and is accurately detailed with fill and pour caps, wire handle, handle grip, and ribbed body. Underneath is the coin insert and removal mechanism, disguised as a fuel gauge.
SINSHEIM MUSEUM
By Hans-Georg SchmittThe Auto & Technik Museum at Sinsheim shows technological history in a unique setting. Most cars are roadworthy, on loan from private collectors and are in regular use. The museum opened 6 May 1981, the continual increase in visitors necessi-tating expansion. In 1991 an annexe opened in Speyer. In both museums are huge numbers of cars, trucks, railway engines, aircraft and boats. Speyer also includes dolls and musical instruments. Souvenirs are available in the museum shops, a Magirus truck in 1:87 and 1:50 scales, by Wiking. The 1:87 model is in stock, the 1:50 one officially sold out, but a small batch was found at Wiking, so a few are still around. Auto und Technik Museum Sinsheim; Obere Au 2, 74889 Sinsheim, Germany. The second 1:43 racing car transporter from St Petersburg of Russia is a 1954 Twin Fageol Super Freighter of the Cunningham Team. In 1950 Twin Coach introduced a line of vans, under the Fageol name. The large range had wheelbases from 108 to 222 inches, all with International components but of traditional Twin Coach integral construction. The Fageol Super Freighters, were available through the IH dealer network until 1954, when Twin Coach sold its bus operation to Flxible. Briggs Cunningham's team bought a specially-designed van in 1954, one of the most attractive race transporters of the 1950s.

Cape Model & Toy Club: The club newsletter 'Cape Model Collector' is always full of model news and features on real vehicles, with a distinct leaning towards British cars. Ron Gersbank suggests that now that South Africa is a low-cost economy, it might be a better place to make diecast models (like Vanguards) than China. Local and not-so-local activities on offer include a 'bring and braai' (barbecue) at the club AGM and a new toy museum to visit in Walvis Bay, Namibia. For more details write to CM&TC, PO Box 22540, Fish Hoek 7974, South Africa.
The British Ambulance Society: A new Internet website aims at greater awareness of ambulance heritage and attracting more members. See www.britambsoc.org.uk or write to British Ambulance Society, 25 West Rise, Tonbridge, Kent TN9 2PG.
Wessex Model and Toy Collectors: It seems that not every WMTC member understood the generosity of the free membership for 2000. 'If another 1999 member offers to pay for 2000 membership, the cash will be accepted as a Charity Donation. How many more times? You have been warned' says club newsletter, Smalltalk. Since their first charity auction in 1989 the WMTC has raised over £35,000, so it would go to a good cause. A handy tip in Smalltalk is from Barry Lloyd, who tells us that Mr Muscle oven cleaner removes vac-plated chrome from plastic without damag-ing the styrene. Experiment a bit first. If you'd like to join this band of helpful and charit-able souls, contact Barry on 0117 986 6503.
The Lledo Enthusiast & Variations Club: Bill Alexander has set up this club in the tradition of Ray Bush's Lledo Calling, which aimed to list every Lledo variation. This is a turning point in Lledo history, with the closure of the Enfield factory and a new era about to begin under Corgi ownership. If you want to be fully-informed about every variation of every Lledo model, the sub is £8.00 for six 'Enthusiast' newsletters per year. Contact Bill at 33 North Town Moor, Maiden-head, Berks SL6 7JR (Tel-fax 01628 622318).
Maidenhead Static Model Club: All MSMC members received a special Christmas gift from the Club, a Lansdowne Singer Roadster, with their membership number as a racing number, and Club logo, in a presentation box. And in addition the Club's Christmas bash included a free buffet and drinks, plus entertainment by the Elderly Brothers. We are not sure if there are any membership vacancies (the MSMC used to operate a waiting list, but the MAR Editor's name never made it to the top), but you could try contacting Publicity Officer Cliff Maddock (tel-fax 0118 983 3062).
The Ghost Club International: André Blaize tells us that from March, the 20 page Ghost Club magazine will be replaced with a 'light' newsletter with the same info, 'but no bla-bla'. Subs will decrease to £6.00. Life membership remains at £10.00. Contact: The Ghost Club Int. By Bertrand AzémaI have been asked to pass on a formal denial regarding the information in MAR 139 about future Lancia models from Solido. The current contract with Fiat does not include a Lancia Aurelia B24 Spyder and certainly not the old Lancia Lambda from the 1920s. Following are the lists of the models produced for Fiat and sold in metal boxes, as well as those included in the Solido range for 1999 and this year. A few colour variations are included. Starting in January 2000, all models are in blue boxes, except for the fire engines (white and red), military vehicles (orange) and Pepsi-Cola (special box).

News from Italy
By Bruno BoraccoFIRST, my second book is almost ready, covering model Fiats, plus their derivatives such as Autobianchi, Abarth, Siata, Cisitalia and license-built Fiats including Seat, Fiat Concord etc. See the colour centre pages.
DEL PRADO: The Edizioni del Prado Car Collection is a series of 70 diecast model cars made in China, each sold with an auto history part publication, discussed in MAR 138 and 139 by Brian Warne and Maz Woolley. The first cars are from the 1950s and 60s. I found 13 models so far in Italy: Jaguar E Type spider 1961 in classic dark green but a pity that the front lights are unglazed, Lamborghini Miura 1966 yellow (the best in my opinion), Ford Mustang fastback 1967 red (a copy of the Dinky-Matchbox model), Porsche 911 Carrera cabrio 1989 black, Aston Martin DB5 in metallic grey, Mercedes 300SL Gullwing (possibly inspired by the Solido) in metallic grey of course, Corvette Stingray 1963 light blue metallic, Fiat 500F 1965 in an incorrect light blue (the same mistake occurred on the Fiat 500F made by Vitesse), BMC Mini Cooper 1970 not as nice and why red with a white roof? Only the works rally car was this colour. VW 1303 white (a copy of the Jouef model with the same faults), Citroen DS19 1964 (inspired by the Vitesse?) black with white roof (there are nicer colours), Alpine A110 1976, nice in French blue, BMW 507 in cream. In the list to follow: Alfa Romeo 156, Audi A4, BMW 850i, Facel Vega HK 500, Lancia Delta Integrale, Jaguar XJ220, Maserati Bora, Cadillac Eldorado, Ferrari 512 Testarossa, Dodge Viper, Saab 900S, Opel Calibra, Honda Civic, Vauxhall Viva, Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, Morgan Plus 4, MGB, Toyota Celica GT4, Mercury Coupe, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Oldsmobile Toronado, Triumph TR3, Bugatti T41 Royale, Hispano Suiza H6B etc.
BANG: Plans for 2000 include Alfa Romeo 2000 and 2600 Sprint, plus a Maserati 450S.
RIO: The new Fiat 128 will be available in eight colours, though unfortunately the yellow is the wrong shade.
PROGETTO-K are making a strange Fiat 600 station wagon, built by Viotti in two tone finish. The Fiat 1100 TV will be scarce, as the system at the factory which paints the roof a different colour is out of action.
FIAT EXHIBITION: An exhibition in the Fiat Historical Centre from June to November 1999 was very interesting for model car fans as many large scale metal models were shown, made for Fiat many years ago: cars, trucks, tractors etc. The real cars on display included 4hp 1899, 8hp 1901, 1 1909, 2 Landaulet 1910, 18 BL truck 1915, Mefistofele 1924, F2 GP 1907, 522S 1933, 501 1919, 519 1923, 508 Balilla 1932, 500A Topolino 1936, a very rare prototype of the never-made Fiat 700 , Fiat 600 1955, Nuova 500 1957, 8V 1954, Turbina 1954, 1500 Spider 1963, Dino Spider 1969. And very interesting, a reproduction of the office of the famous designer Ing Dante Giacosa. In the exhibition were also included Fiat bicycles, aircraft engines, model aircraft, a real C29 racing seaplane from 1931, models of marine engines, trains, trucks, tractors and many videos showing every age of Fiat.

Among the many semi-anonymous diecast toy factories in China who produce models for ranges around the world, a recent recruit is Bright Century Corporation Limited, with a factory in China and sales team in Hong Kong. They produce fairly derivative subjects in various scales. There is a 1:25 series of trucks, looking not unlike a 1930s Chevrolet with various bodies, tanker, drinks, crates or tilt covered pickup. These are unfortunately marred by bodies which are too short, with no rear overhang. A range of 1:87 US artic trucks includes cabover and conventional tractors with box trailers under the 'Heavy Haulers' title. The 'K Car' series of six inch long modern cars consists of a VW New Beetle and Ford Ka. In 1:64 scale there are licensed models of a Peterbilt conventional and a Kenworth K100E cabover, each with race transporter semi-trailers.

By Hans-Georg SchmittThe new BMW X5 is the first vehicle of a new kind, bringing power and agility, stability and performance, sportiness and elegance. The front and some body contours relate to the 5 series estate, but the commanding view from the high seats gives a totally different driving experience. Inside the X5 is typical BMW quality of materials, finish and ergonomics. The X5 Sports Activity Vehicle initially has a 4.4 litre V8 petrol-injection engine. Late in 2000 a straight-six Diesel engine will also be available. It has a five-speed automatic transmission and permanent four wheel drive. The new SAV will be produced in Spartanburg, Alabama, USA, where the Z3 sportscar will also be produced. It is already in production but Europe will not see it before Summer 2000. The new vehicle also was available in scale model form at the presentation at Frankfurt Motor Show, in three scales. The 1:87 version is by Herpa in two versions and in different colours. The 4.4 litre version was the press promo model at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999.
The 1:43 model comes from Paul's Model Art Minichamps, also well finished. The metallic black body is accurately reproduced, the lights, mirrors and the rear windscreen wiper are separate inserts. The bonnet opens, revealing a detailed replica of the 4.4 litre V8 engine. The interior is authentic, including the screen for the satellite navigation-system. The baseplate is also highly detailed, the exhaust system is a separate insert and the 1:87 and 1:43 models are in the usual BMW black pop-up plastic boxes.
The top version of the X5 model cars is the 1:18 model by Kyosho. The body is metallic silver, and all doors and panels open in the same way as on the original, even the rear door is separated into upper and lower parts. The steering works, and under the bonnet is a highly detailed V8 engine. The interior is outstanding, every switch in the right place and shaped correctly, the seats are leather finished and the floor is covered with flock, looking like real carpet. The baseplate is unbelievably detailed with the bottom of the engine and gear box, all mechanical parts, twin exhaust system (which even has the instruction and warning-decals) and suspension. It is hard to imagine that this model is mass produced, it is so detailed. All three models are available from BMW dealers only. The BMW part numbers are:
