EDITORIAL
by Rod WardSEASON’S GREETINGS
We come to the end of another year at Model Auto Review, completing 26 years in continuous publication. I take this opportunity to wish you the compliments of the season, as the next time you will be reading a new issue of MAR it will be 2008.
MAR 219 will see some changes, which have been in the planning stages for a little while, but we’ll keep what will actually happen as a surprise, though you may see a few small hints here and there in this issue.
SPECIAL OFFER FOR YOU
A small Christmas offer for you. In 2008 I plan to publish ten new titles in the Auto Review series (see opposite page and page 51). Here is a special offer: Pay in advance before the end of December by credit card or cheque £20.00 (UK) or £24.00 (RoW) and you can have any four of the titles priced at £5.95 - your choice. You can choose from those already in print, or from future announced titles, sent as soon as they are published, or you can even take pot luck; order ‘any other 2008 titles’.
NOTE OUR ADDRESS
After nearly 35 years using Post Office Box addresses for our businesses, we have now discontinued that practice.
Please remember from now on to only use our street address for all mail correspondence, not the old PO Box address.
AUTO REVIEW
Thanks to everyone who has sent photos for our future Auto Review books; more is always needed. The titles on The three wheeler car in Britain and Taxi: Purpose-built cabs in Britain are almost ready, for publication early in 2008. We still need more material, in particular colour photos of pre-1960 subjects (perhaps preserved vehicles), on Land Rover, Airships, Jaguar, MG, Riley, Electric vehicles, US taxicabs, Water Speed Record boats, British Motorcycles. Plus another ten titles are at various stages of development, on motor, aviation and other popular culture topics, but we invite suggestions for any other titles too...

Le Président
By Maz WoolleyI had to resort to eBay to acquire another of the dumped Atlas Citroen DS partworks, as I have never seen this one at a swapmeet or discount store. The DS19 du General de Gaulle is based on the 1963 car, which presumably replaced the vehicle which famously saved the Président’s life by remaining driveable, despite having a tyre blown out and being riddled with bullets, to get him away from an OAS assassination attempt in 1962. This is another model made by Norev. It is to a high standard with individual external door handles, and plastic light lenses. An F international plate takes pride of place in the centre of the boot and period number plates nicely printed. I assume that these are correct for the Presidential car. The roof has a sliding cloth cover modelled in the open position, showing the hand rail fitted to steady the President when standing up and waving to crowds. The interior has quite a bit of moulded detail but none is painted or decalled. This car really begs for models of a driver and de Gaulle waving to the crowds.
2007: in small scale
By Maz WoolleyAT the end of 2007 collectors of small scale cars can look back on a staggering year. There has been a huge growth in 1:76 scale models in the UK and 1:87 scale models in the USA, where Classic Metal Works and a few others dominate 1:87 sales. Walmart and Target now stock 1:87 via importers such as Malibu and the Welly Fresh Cherries series. The recent Reel Rides movie tie-in is a particularly strong seller. Others, such as Ricko and Masterpiece make quality models from Chrysler Airflows to current police cars. Model Power won awards for their Oldsmobile 4-4-2, announced an interesting line of models, but had problems, though last year’s plan forms the range for 2008. The US market is seeing ordinary cars from the 70s and 80s; Fairmonts, Pintos and Mavericks. Even a Dodge Omni (Chrysler-Simca Horizon) is said to be on its way!
In Europe Schuco is now not alone importing budget 1:87 models. French collectors have had a 1:87 Atlas partwork, modelled by Universal Hobbies; 2cv, Renault 4cv, DS etc but to cover Facel Vega and others. Wiking, Herpa, Brekina and Busch had full 1:87 programmes. US garage firms keep up a flow of solid 1:87 models, including 40s and 50s cars. In Europe small artisan firms produced many items, including 1:87 UK vehicles from JMK.
When 2007 started, very few ‘collected’ 1:76 vehicles, mainly bus collectors. They were otherwise bought as model railway accessories or by marque collectors, who buy their favourite car in every scale. 1:87 collectors split 60:40 between collectors and railway enthusiasts. By now 1:76 sales must be showing a similar split. 1:76 bus collectors continue to be well catered for, by EFE, OOCo and others. Collectors of 1:76 lorries had new castings from EFE, Corgi, Classix and Base Toys. Light commercials came from Oxford and Corgi continue to expand their overscale Trackside range. At the start of 2007 the only 1:76 car models were from artisan producers such as Parker and John Day though Corgi announced a few cars for 2007. By the end of the year we have 1:76 cars from Corgi, Oxford and Classix, plus more from Parker. 2008 will see Oxford’s 1:76 sports cars, taxis and Land Rovers.
The lists published in MAR recently show that some marques are well covered if you build kits. You can get most vehicles from mid-50s Ford Five-Star adverts and even the 60s. But immediate postwar Anglia and Prefect, the 100E Escort and Popular, and others are up for grabs. Austin is less well served. The A40 Devon from Classix will be joined by a Dorset but where is the late 50s A99 and its Wolseley equivalent, so popular with the police? Morris has large gaps too. Standard-Triumph is missing Renown, Mayflower, some Vanguard phases, Pennant and Companion. Limousines from the 50s and 60s would be lovely, but licensing from Jaguar-Daimler and Rolls-Royce may be a deterrent to some makers.
More American Notes
By Ben van RoodeThomas Built Buses is an American manufacturer of school buses.
They also sell merchandise, including two diecast buses in 1:53 scale, which you can order from their website. There are three different liveries available on one model, and one livery on a futuristic design. I note that Del Prado fire truck models are now available in the USA. The 1936 Ford convertible with trailer by Franklin Mint is a very nice choice; because of the trailer. A 1:72 scale tank transporter is an interesting model from Dragon, of the famous US M26 ‘Dragon Wagon’. Remenber the France Jouets version? I would like to have it in a bigger scale, but this one has nice detail. See page 56.GMP offer a range of 1:6 scale dashboards. Corvette, 1957 Bel Air and so on, mounted on a stand. Motor Max have introduced a range of 1:43 scale cars. I like these cars, though they are really ‘toys’, a word not well received by the kind of rivet-counting collector. But I can never forget where the roots of our hobby lie; in toys. There are no surprises for us in the Motor Max range, however. There is a 1955 300C Chrysler, Dodge Magnum 2005 and 2005 Chrysler 300C, and some European cars as well. This is not a recent release, but I have to mention the 1:64 scale Norev 1953 GM Futurliner; it is a gem, it is really nice. If you see it, you’ll have to buy it.
I have mentioned Athearn before in these notes. Their 1:50 mid-sixties Ford pumper is new, as are a series of 1:50 scale 1931 Ford As in pickup, convertible and sedan versions. Why 1:50 scale? For train collectors? Maybe the Editor will enlighten you. (I’m not sure I can: American-market O scale railroads are actually 1:48 scale. maybe it’s a compromise. Ed). Brooklin has announced the following car subjects for 2008: 1967 Corvair Monza, 1954 Hudson Hornet, 1937 Lincoln Model K7, 1953 Chrysler Imperial ambulance and a Terex MT 440 Mine Dump Truck in 1:50 scale priced at $319,95 (about €200 or £160.00).
First Gear has announced new liveries for their 1:25 scale International van. New to the market, but probably related to White Rose models, is First Response. Items for delivery later this year include a 1941 Ford, 2007 Ford Crown Victoria and 2007 Dodge Charger, all in police liveries. The Batmobile returns to the Hot Wheels range in 1:43 and 1:18 scales. In the latter large scale it will be made in different detail levels, from regular to Elite and Super Elite (about $250).
Motor City will release their 1959 Cadillac limousine in January 2008. They have also announced a model of a 1956 Chrysler St Regis in 1:18 scale, very nice. Their proposed 1:24 scale Greyhound Bus may never appear on the market, because of rising costs. We’ll have to wait and see. Sun Star’s 1:18 scale range will release a 1958 Lincoln Mark III convertible in December 2007. Next year’s releases will include a welcome 1951 Henry J and a 1965 Ford F-100 Good Humor ice cream truck.

Book Reviews
Schuco Legendäres Spielzeug (Legendary Toys) by Rudger Huber, German text. Pub: Battenberg Verlag, available only from Schuco dealers. 430 pages, 845 photos. Hardbound 220 x 285 mm. ISBN 978-3-86646-014-0; clothbound: ISBN 978-3-86646-015-7. €49.95
Schuco was founded in 1913 by Heinrich Schreyer, the first mechanical toy animals made in the mid-1930s, then toy cars and later aircraft. The book covers the early years and the post-war story. In 1976, the company became bankrupt and fell into the hands of the British DCM conglomerate, who ran it into the ground. In 1980, the Mangold family of Gama took over and Schuco rose again. Under new manager Peter Brunner the brand prospered. At the end of the 1990s, the Mangolds sold Trix, Gama and Schuco. The latter two ended up in the Simba Dickie Group. Almost every toy and miniature vehicle is pictured, as are rare prototypes and variations. Current values are also given. All Schuco collectors will have to own this book, to check on items in the collection, or just to dream about those they don’t have.
Hans-Georg SchmittThe Car Design Yearbook 6: The Definitive Annual Guide to All New Concept and Production Cars Worldwide by Stephen Newbury. Merrell Publishers, London (orderline 01235 465500) hardbound + dustjacket, 280 pages, 250 x 290 mm. ISBN-13: 978-1-8589-4378-7 £29.95
It is hard to believe that this is the sixth edition of this excellent reference work, with over 550 colour photographs, up to six illustrations per car. Stephen Newbury describes and assesses the design features and technical innovations of more than 100 totally new concept and production cars unveiled in the year between and including the New York and Geneva motor shows, April 2006 to March 2007. There are also profiles of three car designers, a Green Machines analysis of cars designed to use batteries and fuel cells, which will give designers scope for originality in every aspect of a vehicle’s layout and look, and a feature on major advances in glass technology which have greatly aided visual design of cars. Below is an A to Z list of the concept and production cars included in this book. Essential reading.

At this time of year we look forward with apprehension to the unsuitable presents for which we have to pretend to be grateful.
This year you can drop a hint to your loved ones to get you a copy of Chapman’s Car Compendium: The essential book of car facts and trivia. This book is written by Giles Chapman, who I first encountered when he worked at Classic and Sportscar in the 1980s. The lad comes from ‘Oop North’, but I won’t embarrass him by saying where. Look on page 68 of his best-seller The worst cars ever sold. This book is packed with arcane information about cars, though he doesn’t claim completeness. Just as well; the section listing architects who designed cars omits Eric Broadley of Lola. You won’t believe the amount of gen here; 25 TV detectives’ cars, 20 celebrity car deaths, 72 countries which drive on the left, cars in music titles, an A-Z of car design, and much, much more. Published by Merrell (orderline 01235 465500) at £9.95, this is a hardback book with dustjacket, 155mm x 200mm, and 190 fact-filled pages; ISBN 978-1-8589-4414-2. Great Fun.

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod WardSydney Model Auto Club:
The SMAC official journal Think Small, edited by Neal Stirton, is attractively printed in full colour throughout, but most of the pictures are devoted to entries in clubnight themed displays. No doubt this serves club members well, and is appreciated. It is a bit like local newspapers whose policy is to picture as many local folk or their produce as possible, so that they all buy a copy, or maybe multiple copies, to give to their friends and family. This kind of content is less interesting to outsiders of course, so there is little I can tell you about it. This is becoming a problem with a number of the club newsletters I receive. They serve the club members well, which is what they are supposed to do, but there is less and less that I can pass on in these pages which would be of interest to a wider audience. If you want your models to be pictured in colour in Think Small, you’ll have to join the SMAC; phone Secretary John Maude on 9579 1257.
South Hants Model Auto Club:
The South Hants Club is famous for its displays at Classic car shows and other events, which publicise our hobby to a wider public. In the SHMAC magazine, Wheel Nuts, edited by Sue and Stu Leake, they note that every exhibitor has to have their own personal Public Liability insurance. Exhibition organisers’ insurance does not cover exhibitors. Household insurance may well cover loss or damage to your collection at home, but probably not when you are exhibiting elsewhere, nor are you covered for third party claims for injury or damage. They recommend a policy from Magpie Insurance, which costs £30.00 annually for £5,000.00 display value coverage, though it is not clear what is the third party coverage level. The SHMAC has a couple of splinter groups, the Editors tell us, the SH International Tank Set and the SH Air Transport Section. Following their ‘Oddball’ clubnight display there is now another lot, the Old Balls Brigade. That reminds me of an art exhibition I visited recently where two little old ladies were eyeing the free wine and nibbles table suspiciously. One asked the other, ‘Do you like cheesy balls? I don’t like their smell.’ To join this crowd of oddballs, contact Secretary Dave Painter on 01264 366408.
Natal Diecast Model Collectors:
Newsletter Editor Simon Bruton’s valiant efforts to fill his eight pages every other month may be coming to an end. He has no doubt now realised why nobody else wanted this demanding job, and he can no longer find the time to produce the newsletter. So once again the Club has to try to find a new Editor. I bet ex-Chairman and ex-Editor Geoff Sear will be keeping his head well down when it comes to the usual request for volunteers. There must be a better solution to communicating with club members. Nobody ever wants the Editor’s job, and nobody appreciates the amount of work entailed in producing a newsletter. Philip Ellis, the new Chairman of the Club, can be contacted with NDMC membership enquiries on 031 266 3138 (from within South Africa).
Wessex Model and Toy Collectors:
Barry Lloyd, editor the the WMTC organ Wessex Smalltalk, notes that the club’s charity auction will be held in December. I remember offering a painting for this auction, but at the time of writing this the picture is still in Yorkshire. Actually there are a couple of items I’d like to bid for, but it’s a long way to Trowbridge on a Tuesday night. If you’d like to become a member and put your bids in, contact membership secretary Doug Male on 01225 755043
