EDITORIAL
by Rod Ward

CHRISTMAS COMES...

... but once a year. But not in the USA, where it is the Holiday Season. The last MAR edition of each year has always been known as our 'Christmas Issue', however, so here it is.

It is published on 7 December, and is meant to keep you happy through the festive season and beyond. A reminder: there is no MAR on 7 January, to allow me to catch up after producing five issues in five months. MAR 209 will have an official publication date of 7 February, though if all goes to plan we will ship out the first copies in mid- January. Until then, I hope you have a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year. Oh, and thanks in advance to everyone who sends us a Christmas card, including those jolly email electronic ones (thanks, Don). I always forget to express my thanks for them by the time the first issue of the new year appears.

HORNBY BUY AIRFIX

Hornby have agreed to buy Humbrol, after the latter company's widely- publicised collapse. The Margate-based makers of model railways and Scalextric slot car systems has agreed to pay £2.6 million for Humbrol, famous for its tinlets of enamel paints, and the Airfix plastic kit brand. Hornby, successors to the old Tri-ang Rovex company, have their products made in the far east, and they are expected to transfer most Humbrol and Airfix production to China or India. The administration of Humbrol will move from Hull to Kent.

25 YEARS YOUNG

With this issue, we complete 25 years in continuous publication of Model Auto Review. No, I can't believe it either. I have been editor and publisher of every issue for a quarter of a century. I don't propose to use any of our precious pages for navel-gazing retrospectives as we did after earlier anniversaries, such as the ten year mark. I do, however, intend to mark the anniversary with special offers, including a free model for every reader in MAR 209!

TOY CAR COLLECTOR From this month onwards, Toy Car Collector Magazine of the USA has sadly ceased to exist as a separate entity. I am pleased to include it within the pages of MAR from now on, and to welcome Editor- Publisher Dana Johnson and regular contributors Dave Weber and Kimmo Sahakangas on board. You will see their names frequently in future MAR issues..

2007 NEW RELEASES MAR 209 will have some of the 2007 plans of model and toy companies (like the Corgi 2007 news in this issue), before the main trade toy fair season's flood of news from MAR 210 onwards. If you have access to news of future releases from any company which will help to make our coverage more complete, please send it to me. Don't assume I already have it: as always, it is better that I have the information three times over, rather than not at all.

Auto Review Update
By Rod Ward

AS if I didn't have enough to do, producing MAR, running Modelauto Ltd and developing the Rapide range, in recent months I have also returned to writing books. The two latest Auto Review titles, A Mini Album and The Spitfire Story, will be published in early 2007, to be followed by other titles during the year. Reminder: photos are invited for inclusion in those books, and if used you will get a free copy. Oh, yes, and I have been busy painting pictures as well; my work has been exhibited at a dozen venues in 2006.

LEONID'S ZIS

Reviewed by Graeme Ogg

I have just received a specimen of the ZiS 110 limousine from Model Cars Heritage, Leonid Khoykhin's smart new sales outlet in St Petersburg. Mine is number 22 in a series of 999. Priced at US$74, it is an impressive car, which the website describes as follows: A nice detailed model of the famous Soviet ZiS-110 limousine in 1:43 scale, the ZiS Model 110 came about as a result of a present given to Josef Stalin by Franklin Delano Roosevelt of a Packard Super Eight. It is said that President Roosevelt arranged for the Packard tooling for the 1942 Series 180 to be sent to Russia during the war as part of Lend-Lease, and production of the car as the ZIL limousine was established in a factory just outside Moscow. The Russian version, however, has many differences in dimensions, and was not an exact copy from the complete set of Packard tooling. This model is produced exclusively for MM Co Ltd by Spark.

It is made to much the same standard as the Chinese Red Flag limo by Century Dragon (and might well have been done in the same factory) but is a rather more elegant vehicle. The add-on detail inside and out is not so excessive as Century's original high-price version of the Red Flag, but it still has extensive photo-etched trim and badges. Some minor details like the external boot hinges and door locks are silver-painted. None the worse for that. The black paintwork is excellent, the brightwork is well-applied and there is plenty of interior detail. To be very picky, one of the very thin chrome strips on one front wing of my specimen was slightly misaligned, but overall it is very well done. It doesn't come with any fancy handbook or background information, just good basic packaging. You can see photos of the model at www.modelcarsheritage.spb.ru, a well-presented website in English and Russian. Ordering on-line is slightly complicated because they email you a form which you have to sign and fax back.

All in the interests of security, I suppose. Delivery is prompt and the model was thoroughly packed. A must-have item for lovers of formal cars and limousines, I think.

Tekno Truck Models

By Hans-Georg Schmitt

In 2006 the International commercial vehicle exhibition in Germany was in Hannover, Lower Saxony. As usual, some model car manufacturers had stands. To my surprise, Tekno were there, the Dutch firm which succeeded the original Danish company.

Production began in 1928 in the cellar of a house in the Danish village of Vanlose. The founder, manager and sole worker was Mr Siegumfeldt, a plumber, who started making tin toys. He was quite successful, the company grew quickly, and in 1932 and 1935 it moved to bigger premises. During the German occupation of Denmark it was forbidden to use tin for toy making. A wartime alternative was zinc, so production of diecast models started with a 1:43 Ford V8. Casting of models was unknown in Denmark at the time, so new machinery was needed. From 1950 to 1969, Tekno models were also produced in Sweden and Norway, and exported all over the world. The founder died in 1969 and two years later his daughter sold the company. After a difficult period, Tekno started anew in the Netherlands, concentrating on truck models, which were very popular. In 1989 Toys was removed from their name, as the quality and price-level meant they were no longer toys. In 2003 Tekno bv opened their museum with thousands of old and new models. Nowadays Tekno makes DAF, MAN, Mercedes-Benz, Scania, and Volvo in many versions, articulated trucks and drawbars. There are Basic, Special and Economy Lines and kits.

In the Tekno Classic Line, old moulds are re-activated. The latest issue is the Scania 2906 three axle truck with a two axle drawbar trailer in the livery of Dijco NV of Holland. The models are cast from old moulds, but are upgraded to modern standards with components, like ladder, roof-rack, signs, gauge rods, and mirrors. The Classic Line models evoke nostalgia, but the modern vehicles are made to the highest current standards of accuracy. Tekno BV is at Coldenhov-elaan 8, 2678 PS De Lier, Netherlands. Website at www.tekno.nl. Check museum opening times for visitors by email: info@tekno.nl

Corgi Plans for 2007

This is the full listing of Corgi plans for the whole of 2007, not half a year at a time as in previous years, though no doubt other models may be released later in addition to those listed here. Notable plans include a 1:43 Morris J2 (the same vehicle proposed by Oxford, but fewer versions, more expensive and out later) and some modern vans in 1:50 scale, to go with your 1:50 trucks. There is also a 1:50 AEC RT bus (like the old Solido model). The month of expected release is indicated at the end of the line.

1:72 scale report: Hongwell give some answers

By Maz Woolley

There have been few new 1:72 castings from Hongwell since early this year when we finally saw the Lotus Elan and others, which were originally expected in 2005.

A recent posting on a Hongwell Collectors Discussion Board explained why all we have seen are recolours and emergency vehicles. Mr Liu of Hongwell is quoted as saying that there are now 'many players' in 1:72, and big firms such as Tesco and Woolworths look for lowest cost to sell to price-sensitive toy buyers. They feel that the range is big enough to sustain sales from existing castings. They have been concentrating on emergency and similar liveries and ascribe the success of sales to the variety of versions that they produce. Their 1:72 development capacity is currently focusing on Abrex and some Russian models. Abrex are funding their mould costs, minimising Hongwell's risk. Hongwell are also diversifying into 1:24 and 1:64 concept cars, but they expect to make six or eight new 1:72 castings per year in future. These are interesting explanations, to which I comment:

I am unsure that there are actually many players in 1:72 scale. Some recent entries into the market such as Yat Ming have not produced any more models after their first release. Saico only seem to produce racing or rally products, and I have yet to see anyone like New Ray or Motor Max produce a full range. In the UK Hongwell seem to dominate this market segment. Tesco and Woolworths do buy cheaply, but 1:72 Hongwells are likely to be replaced by models in other scales, at the same price point. My local Tesco was full of Hongwell 1:43 models in their £1.00 a time boxes recently.

It is interesting that they did not mention 1:87 scale, where there is strong and continued competition between many suppliers at different price points. The recolours and emergency liveries will keep Hongwell sales going for a while, but sales will soon fall off as collectors stop buying and shoppers get bored with seeing the same old thing on the shelves of Poundstretcher and the like. It is interesting that Abrex are funding their development; perhaps this is because Skodas will not sell in the volume that Hongwell usually require? Or is it because Abrex want to prevent their Skoda models being available from other suppliers? I am still waiting for their Historic Models but I guess that they will be more expensive than I would like them to be, with only one supply source. Russian historic vehicles would be fun, but I suspect they will be of vehicles sold only in Russia and close neighbours.

Concept cars have never been good sellers to the general market. The average buyer doesn't recognise them, and collectors are usually interested in an accurate model of the concept car and only buy one example. These subjects are, by definition, impossible to re-colour sensibly. On top of that 1:64 is the most competitive scale on the face of the planet and 1:24 is not without players either.

It is interesting to hear a manufacturer's explanation, but as a cynic I reckon the real reasons are more along the lines of: We can't sell 1:72 in the necessary quantities, so we are re- colouring models to get the necessary sales volume per prototype. There is fierce competition to grab the big buyers and they want more perceived value, so 1:64 and bigger sizes are more likely to win these sales. But if you are prepared to fund development, leaving us with virtually no risk, them we will produce whatever you want in whatever scale you want.

Still, six to eight new models a year would be a reasonable number, but at least half of these may be orientated to the US market, and all will be made with half an eye to re-liverying as emergency vehicles, so the range will head away from their lovely Lotus models; probably dominated by vans and mid-range estates. A shame but, as model collectors buy such a small proportion of their output, it is hardly surprising.

Editor's note: Expect UK demand for 1:72 diecast models to collapse in future, as new 1:76 scale ranges from Corgi and Oxford develop.

'Beam me up, Scottoy'
says co-founder Jonathan Scott

Written by Jonathan Scott in late 2004. Now published to mark Jonathan's departure in 2006 from the firm he co-founded.

Scottoy has reached ten years old. Incredible! I would never have believed that I would ever be able to say that, when I began the long and difficult road that has led to today. Here is the story of Scottoy: Antonio Pezzini, a dentist from Genoa, and Jonathan Scott, maker of industrial fixings from Genoa, later Varese, had both been collectors since childhood. In 1993 they saw a demand for replacement parts for obsolete Italian diecast models, especially Mercury, like the Dinky and Corgi parts sold in England. Antonio had access to the technology through his work, so their destiny was decided. Initially they looked into production methods and registration of the Scottoy and Mercury names, and realised that they could reproduce the entire models in white metal, rather than just the parts. Our first products were shown at the Marco Bossi swapmeet in Turin in 1993 and proved to be of great interest to visitors. This first batch included the Fiat 600 Multipla, Fiat 1100/103, Alfa Giulietta (never before issued), Fiat 600 and Alfa Romeo 1900.

The Lancia Appia 1st series was initially sold exclusively in the UK via Modelauto.

The second series of the 600 Multipla was on a modified prototype base, a short series for Aquilone in Turin and Bruce Sterling in USA. The 1800, Flaminia and the last Innocenti 950, Sprint and 500 were given windows. Our UK distributor Modelauto (publishers of MAR), asked in Summer 1994 if we could produce a short series of Vespa and Lambretta scooters. So we made an initial series of 200 each type, initially exclusively for the UK. Along with the Ape three wheeler derivation of the Vespa, these were major sales successes in the Scottoy range.

Modelauto had two exclusive versions: pink Vespa and Vespa kit. The last scooters were in 1998, the Lambretta 125D with spare wheel, and in 2000 the Lambretta 125LC with enclosed engine compartment.

When the frenzy of scooter production abated, we returned to cars, but we had production problems when making the Fiat 1800 (which turned out well) and the Lancia Flaminia, which went to Club Lancia Holland in 1994, and was recast in 2001. Also in this period I moved from Genoa to Varese. To help with production we enlisted the help of others, first Enrico Niccolini of Off '43 models, Angelo Bellotti, an associate of Mr Niccolini and proprietor of the Giocher range, and pattern maker Faustino Mattei. From 1996 our main distributor was Miniminiera, Piergiorgio and Luca Casati.

Following the scooters, in 1997 we made the Ape (bee) three wheeler, a replica of the Mercury in its open version; but we wanted a box body as well. This was crafted by Antonio Pezzini using materials he uses in his dental practice. Our first Ape promo livery was for Brill, then Abarth plugs, plus a standard version. For BEA srl Mr Antonini had a Christmas edition for his customers, the first in a long series. Miniminiera ordered others, in Gaggia, Campari and Martini liveries. Other promos included Take-off, Foritex and Piaggio France.

The first pattern maker for Scottoy was Dr Pezzini, using techniques and materials from his dental practice to modify castings or add pieces (such as taxi signs). These elaborations led to the question, are they Mercury or not? We just described the Scottoy range as 1:48 models in the style of the fifties and sixties, adding police, fire or taxi versions as demanded by modern collectors, continuing in the spirit of Mercury.

From 1998 we made non-Italian cars; Beetle, Continental, Eldorado, Golden Hawk and Bentley S3, the latter with right hand drive!

Having made big cars and little scooters, in 1999 we made a small scale model of the massive Fiat-Viberti fuel tanker from the 1950s. We planned 300 of each version.

In 1999, as Scottoy was approaching the new millennium, questions arose as to our future direction. Should we go into diecast? We spoke to Rio, Progetto-K and Brumm, to ensure that any new product would not conflict with their plans; and we decided to produce a 1:43 scale Fiat 850. Giocher were already making the Fiat 600 Multipla and Coriasco, and could handle the 850 parts, so Faustino Mattei made a prototype, and we calculated that tooling costs would break even at 15,000 pieces, if we could sell them. The birth of TelModel! The 850 made less concessions to the 'Scottoy style' but continued the Mercury sixties approach, with a minimum of components, unlike many current 'handbuilt kits' with too many parts.

Our first collaboration with another maker to produce promo models was with Off '43, but from 1999 we made an important link with Rio Tattarletti of Brumm, with whom we produced 30 special issues in five years, including major issues for Poste Italiane.

For the tenth anniversary of Scottoy we made a new series of the Fiat 600 Multipla. Other plans include the Mercury 2000 series in 1:43 scale, such as the Fiat 124, 125 and 132, in many versions, and Fiat 682 truck.

Tel Model plans include Fiat Ritmo five door and Fiat 1500. Mercury classic models in the 1:40 Series, limited production. New Scottoy models made from the end of 2004 include the Bianchina Panoramica, the Fiat 1100/103E (central light), the Lancia Flavia and the Fiat 1300. It was a difficult decision, but after 13 years I decided that it was time to finish and spend more time with my family and personal life. Good Collecting!

REVELL plastic kit from Germany: 50 Years of Revell:

07524 Scania artic Showtruck 50 Years of Revell – The World in your hands. In August 2006 Revell, the plastic kit manufacturer whose European base is in Bunde, North Rhine-Westphalia, celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Plastic kit building was born in 1947 in Venice, California, under the leadership of the company founder, Lewis H Glaser. In 1956 the enthusiasm for this new hobby crossed the Atlantic, changing the leisure activities of large numbers of model builders and collectors in Europe.

In that year, their German subsidiary, Revell plastics GmbH, was established in Bielefeld. In 1957, the headquarters moved to the neighbouring town of Bunde.

Initially, complete construction kits imported from the USA and Great Britain were marketed in Germany and neighbouring countries. The first original product development of Revell Germany was in 1971. For their 50th anniversary, among other kits, they have released this Scania T143 conventional tractor and refrigerated trailer show truck.

On the 50th birthday of Revell Germany, the final separation from the American parent concern was completed. Revell GmbH & Co KG has, since 6 September 2006, been a completely independent company with its headquarters in Bunde. Revell-Monogram is exclusively responsible for the American market and Revell Bunde for the European market. Each company operates inependently, linked only through a joint- venture company which owns the common brand rights for international markets. With this separation the the ownership structure has also changed. Alongside the managers Hans Ulrich Remfert and Bernd Wiegmann there are new investors and partners, private individuals from the USA, Belgium and Switzerland.

Remfert and Wiegmann are especially proud to be able to bring a few Revell medium and upper management colleagues into this joint ownership. Mr Remfert foresees in this separation from the American parent company and in their new independence a great chance for further development of the Revell company. (Notes Hans-Georg Schmitt).

NEW OXFORD FACTORY OPENS Announced by Lyndon Davies, Oxford Die-Cast

I am pleased to announce the opening of our new factory in Huizhou, Guangdong Province, China. Our first line of investment is in new painting, printing and assembly equipment. This is part of a longer term strategy to secure production and protect our supply line, not depending upon sub-contractors. The price of zinc has risen to three times the level it was 15 years ago, and a Chinese diecasting firm recently told me, 'Recent zinc price increases have hurt us, due to production being cut back by our customers. We purchased zinc on forward contracts in January and there is now more profit for us to sell the zinc as a raw material instead of producing toys with it'. At Oxford we are now employing 30 permanent Chinese workers. This will increase to 200 employees over the next 18 months. We recently displayed our wares at trade fairs in Shanghai and Hong Kong and have received several orders from mainland China via our Hong Kong subsidiary.

KIBRI RECALL SICK By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Kibri, the German company which makes plastic kits and accessories for HO model railways, has been in difficulties. General Manager Klaus Sick left the firm, but then there were moves amongst the shareholders to ask him to return, with the agreement of their banks. At a corporate meeting it was decided that Mr Sick should continue to run Kibri. The principal aim of the 'sleeping partners' in the company is to keep activity going at the highest possible level.

Book Reviews

FORD IN MINIATURE By Randall Olson. Pub: Veloce Publishing Ltd, 33 Trinity Street, Dorchester, Dorset DT1 1TT,UK. Tel: 01305 260068, Fax: 01305 268864, Email: sales@veloce.co.uk 250mm x 250mm paperbound. 128 pages. 432 colour illustrations. ISBN 1-84584-027-5 / ISBN 13: 978-1-84584-027-3. GBP 19.99 UK, $39.95 USA

Now I should really state my position here. Randall mentions in his foreword that it was I who steered him away from trying to produce an enormous encyclopedia on every handbuilt model made of every US car from the 1930s to the 1960s, and towards a single-make themed volume, intended to be the first in a series. So I hope I was right. Rod Grainger of Veloce has certainly done him proud with the production values of this book. It is dramatically presented, packed with colour and sumptuously glossy. Randall has sensibly eschewed acres of grey text, instead concentrating on informative captions to the hundreds of lovely pictures. He consulted all the experts he could find (plus me as well) to ensure that his coverage is accurate and complete, without being too wordy. Coverage is of American Ford cars including Edsel, Lincoln, and Mercury and trucks from the 1920s to the 1970s. In such an extensive and detailed tome there are bound to be a few minor errors (such as describing the very Swiss Rextoys range as Portuguese, for instance), but they are few enough to not annoy the knowledgeable reader, unlike some other books I have read recently. Anyone who is interested in Ford Motor Company products, in American cars or in reading the many inside stories of the world’s handbuilt ranges which are told here will love to have this book for Christmas. Highly recommended. Rod Ward

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF SMALL SCALE DIECAST MOTOR VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS By Kimmo Sakahangas, Dave Weber and Mark Foster. Pub: Iconografix, PO Box 446, Hudson, WI 54016, USA 215 mm x 280 mm paperbound. 144 pages. 100s of colour illustrations. ISBN 1-58388-174-3 / ISBN 13: 978-1-58388-174-3. $34.95 USA

Small Scale? ‘Three inch’ and smaller, down to tiny models, but all diecast metal. Over 50 firms make such models today, but hundreds of extinct companies are listed and described here as well. Assembling this information was a major task, and it will prove to be a very useful information source in future. The authors served their apprenticeships as Matchbox and Hot Wheels collectors, but they are not partial, giving thorough coverage to every other maker, large and small. They leave some questions of company connections and fates open to further discussion. Perhaps this will be in the pages of MAR, as Kimmo and Dave will be writing here in future. A very useful reference and a conversation starter! Rod Ward

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod Ward

Coventry Diecast Model Club

To mark Corgi's 50th birthday, the CDMC held a barbecue at the Coventry Air Museum under the wing of the Avro Vulcan City of Coventry. Corgi's Carl Dudley attended with a Corgi 50th birthday cake and gave some Corgi models for the raffle. Club members bought along Corgi birthday related models for display, including the first Corgi, (Ford Consul) from Eric Parr and some very nice early Mettoy tinplate from Brian Malin. John Print brought along Corgi fire chops. Other members had birthday memories, like the James Bond DB5 bought as a birthday present for Mixxy in 1966. He also had the pre-production version of the Corgi Vanguards Austin Mini On Fire, a copy of his own Mini. The CDMC meet on the first Wednesday of each month at the Air Museum, Baginton. Ring Mick Russell 0779 9882016 or email cdmc@ntlworld.com

Wessex Model and Toy Collectors:

Thanks largely to cheery chappie Barry Lloyd, editor of the WMTC newsletter Smalltalk, this club is the home of humour. They even managed a clubnight devoted to British radio comedy, featuring Rob Wilton, Max Miller, ITMA, the Goons, Take It From Here, Round the Horne and much more. Barry fills Smalltalk with jokes and asides but he should look to his laurels as Dave Puremont is competing for the comedy award. An ex-teacher, he marks papers and listed some howlers he has found ('toilet roll is continually manufactured because it is continually in use') and motoring references from his early life. The rhyme Singer song of sixpence, the hymn Jesus wants me for a Sunbeam and the biblical motor-cycling reference And the roar of Moses' Triumph could be heard throughout the land all get a mention. If you’d like to read all the jokes, and maybe add your own, contact membership secretary Doug Male on 01225 755043.

Cape Model and Toy Club:

The Cape Model Collector, newsletter of the CMTC, is sent to us regularly by Honorary President and MAR contributor Ron Gersbank, and I have often commented on this page on how well South African collectors feed themselves. They had a buffet of Chinese food as a 'Christmas in July' club dinner at the Oriental Cuisine Restaurant in Bloubergsands. 'The food was superb and the club provided the wine', notes Secretary-Treasurer Graham Ramsay. Maybe that explains it? Is he related to Gordon Ramsay? No, he can’t be. Too polite. If you like your grub, phone Graham on 072 156 6806.

South Hants Model Auto Club:

The Club held a Mastermind quiz clubnight, just to show what a lot of clever clogs they are, but the main activity of members still seems to be attending classic car shows, air shows, steam fairs and the like. They do know how to enjoy themselves in the deep south, don't they? Oh, and they collect a lot of model cars too. Club Secretary Dave Painter would like to tell you about his Lotus Cortina models, and also how to join the club; phone him on 01264 366408.

Maidenhead Static Model Club

Thanks to Wheel Bearings, edited by Cliff Maddock, I see that member Ray Strutt (formerly of Collectors Gazette and Modelex fame) has been in hospital for major surgery. He is now out of hospital, apparently and taking it steady as part of his recovery programme, which is expected to take about three months. I am sure that all MAR readers will wish him a full and speedy recovery. Frank Hastings, mentioned previously in this column, has now been able to attend clubnights, so that is good news. To go back to the radio comedy theme of the WMTC, Wheel Bearings mentions Kenneth Horne, who was a successful businessman alongside his radio career, being Chairman of Chad Valley Toys. If you'd like to join the MSMC, contact Member-ship Secretary Alan Simpson on 01494 813903.

New Zealand Model Vehicle Club:

Miniature Auto, NZMVC newsletter, edited by Ron Ford, puts MAR's 25 years in print in perspective, as it has been published for 37 years. Hmph. Nuff said. For more information on this very ancient club, ring Eric Brockie (03) 448 9276 or email austinrk@paradise.net.nz
