Model Auto Review News

December 2003

EDITORIAL
By Rod Ward

THE LAST MODEL AUTO REVIEW OF 2003
This is the last issue of MAR published in 2003, a year which has given me some problems. Not only has it been hard to balance MARís finances, but on many occasions it has been difficult to fill the pages with up to date and interesting news. Those problems are now resolved (see my next note) and I take this opportunity to wish you the compliments of the season. You will find news of new releases for 2004 from Corgi and other makers in this issue. There will be lots more news of future plans in the next issues, early in 2003. There is a gap of eight weeks before MAR 179 is in front of you. Please be patient!

... WITH SOME CHANGES
You will notice a few changes to the format of this issue of MAR. See the Correspondence pages for some of the reasoning which has led to these changes being necessary. I had to think long and hard before making any changes, but MAR has been running at a considerable financial loss for some time. It doesnít have to make a profit, but at least it should break even. If changes had not been made, we would almost certainly have had to terminate publication in February 2004.
The changes from this issue onwards will enable MAR to cover its expenditure and to continue in publication long into the future. In confidential discussion with a few MAR ëinsidersí it was agreed that every effort must be made to continue publication, even if it meant increasing the cover price or changing the specification. I would have preferred the former option, but that would have been unacceptable to many readers, who already struggle to pay their subscriptions at the present level. So the latter route was chosen instead. The page balance of the magazine was always dependent on achieving a regular proportion of paid advertising, which has not been forthcoming for many years. We need to sell 25% of the pages to advertisers to break even (including one in four colour pages) and regular readers will find it hard to remember when we last managed that. Much discussion with our printers and sharpening of pencils in their estimating department has resulted in the magazine you now hold in your hands.
Analysis of the contents of recent MARs has led me to redesign some pages, leaving out or condensing items which are of less interest or importance, and expanding the parts which you like best. It will now also be easier for me to select important and interesting news items. I have ensured that nothing essential has been lost, other than those colour pages whose inclusion was not economically viable. I will be interested in your views, though there is no chance of a return to the previous format, unless there is a sudden upsurge in advertising and subscription revenues. Those readers I have already consulted are fully supportive of whatever changes have to be made to ensure that they get their copy of Model Auto Review ten times a year. So we go forward from here, again sitting a little higher in the water...

BOOK REVIEWS
By Hans-Georg Schmitt and Rod Ward

BARTON (Prestige Series) by John Banks, photos G H F Atkins, pub: Venture Public-ations, 128 Pikes Lane, Glossop, Derby-shire SK13 8EH. 64 pages, softbound, 240 x 170 mm ISBN 1 898432 91 0, £8.95.
This is the 23rd book in the Prestige Series, and this time it is the first part of coverage of the famous Nottinghamshire bus fleet of Barton. This is not a definitive fleet history, nor a fleet list; those have been published before. It is rather a celebration of the company's buses, shown in the excellent photos of Mr Atkins and others. Vehicles pictured range from 1908 to 1989, with their surrounding street scenes also reflecting changes down the years. Fans of the famous and extensive red and cream Barton fleet will find this book essential reading, and many other will enjoy it as well.

HULL (Super Prestige Series) by John Banks, pub: Venture Publications, 128 Pikes Lane, Glossop, Derbyshire SK13 8EH.108 pages, softbound, 240 x 170 mm ISBN 1 898432 92 9, £16.95.
The writer expects the title of this book to be the shortest in this series, and as he was born in Hull he is admirably qualified to write the book. Pictures of buses in the Hull livery, with its swirl of white on blue, must have led many folk who don't know the city (always known to the locals as 'town') to imagine it as a fantastical never-land. Mr Banks doesn't only describe the buses, trams and trolleybuses of Hull, he also describes the history and topography of the city, clarifying the story for those unfamiliar with the area. Before the devastation of the Second World War, Hull had trams, trolleybuses and buses. The trams were discontinued in 1945, due to the cost of repairing the system after bomb damage (Leeds got the surviving trams, but didn't like them much), and the trolleybuses only lasted to 1964. They were popular with the residents, but fast postwar expansion of the city to large outlying estates meant that expanding the trolleybus infrastructure was not viable. The pictures of the vehicles and their city are fascinating (how many buses elsewhere were converted into a 'mobile theatre and bandstand'?) and the captions are both extensive and informative. Ten pages of colour photos (which must have used more than the usual proportion of blue ink) complete the package very nicely. This book is not just for East Yorkshiremen; anyone interested in transport and the twentieth century development of British cities will find it a very good read.

Buses in the seventies (Prestige Series) by John Banks, photos G H F Atkins, pub: Venture Publications, 128 Pikes Lane, Glossop, Derbyshire SK13 8EH. 80 pages, hardbound, 175 x 240 mm, landscape, full colour, ISBN 1 898432 93 7, £16.95.
Will future generations view the seventies as a dull period, as so many people do today? So many eras seemed to end with the 1960s, and British buses are no exception. In 1969 the National Bus Company was formed by combining dozens of operators around the country into one big organisation, with unified liveries and logos. For a while there was a mixture of old and new liveries running side by side, but then it all settled into a uniform soup. The NBC was soon followed by local Passenger Transport Executives. The author notes that to many bus fans the 'super sixties' gave way to the 'sad seventies'. Grand old liveries were wilfully replaced with naff 'modern' brand images. Great companies with long traditions and consumer loyalties were destroyed and replaced with... Nothing. There were many apologists for the NBC and PTEs at the time, but if they were so good, why did they disappear again in more recent years? What an unrewarding job the author thus took on in assembling this book, we may think. But the superb colour photographs of Geoffrey Atkins rescue the project. There were still lots of interesting and colourful buses on the road between 1970 and 1979, as this book attests. The street scenes in which they are shown are equally interesting, reminding us of how things were only three decades ago. The author is to be congratulated on producing an interesting book, in spite of its setting in the 'dull decade'.

Rolls-Royce de 1904 a nos jours (from 1904 to today) by Jean-Philippe Secordel, French text, 160 pages, 237 photos. Hard bound with dust jacket 250 x 290mm. ISBN 2-7268-9312-0. Pub. by, available from ETAI, 20 rue de la Saussiere, 92641 Boulogne-Billancourt Cedex, France.
Henry Royce had problems with his first car, bought on the continent, so he built his own better quality car. The Hon Charles Stuart Rolls became his well-connected partner. Rolls-Royce became a prosperous enterprise, with the rich and famous as their customers. Every coachbuilder in Europe liked to create bodies on Rolls-Royce chassis. The company was successful through two World Wars and other hard times, but in the late 1990s the owner, the armaments group Vickers wanted to sell the brand. Volkswagen and BMW competed for it, and ended with a compromise, Volkswagen would buy Bentley and BMW would get Rolls-Royce. Here we have the history of the company from the early days to the new start at Goodwood under German ownership.

BMW Typen und Geschichte by Jürgen Lewandowski, German text, 160 pages, 189 illustrations, hardbound 220x290mm ISBN 3-7688-1420-3. Pub. by and available from Delius Klasing Verlag, Sierker-wall 21, D-33602 Bielefeld, Germany.
This is the story of how the Bavarian Motor Works rose to the top. BMW's history includes many innovative vehicles. Four large pages in tiny print are needed to list every production vehicle from 75 years. The company began in the First World War making aircraft engines. After the War, they went on to motorcycles, then cars were the main product. The whole product range is shown in this book, the pre-war legends 327 and 328, the 501 and the Isetta, then the breakthrough into middle-sized cars in the 1960s and the wide range today. Motor cycles have their own chapter.

Feuerwehr Archiv Import Fahrgestelle by Frank-Hartmut Jager, German text. 160 pages, 372 photos. 170 x 245 mm. Hardbound. ISBN 3-341-01341-5. Published by and available from Huss Medien GmbH. D-10407 Berlin, Germany.
The East German (DDR) truck industry could not always fulfil demand for fire appliances, so many chassis were imported, mostly from the USSR and Czech Republic, but even some from 'Western Class Enemies'. This book shows East German fire engines on foreign chassis, 1945 to 1989.

Audi showed an exciting design study, the LeMans, and Bentley their new Continental GT Coupe, available in 1:43 scale in the Bentley Collection made by Minichamps. One of the original 1920s Le Mans Bentleys was also on display. BMW began their press conference by unveiling the new 5 series saloon, the 6 series coupe, the X3 SUV and facelifted X5. The 5 series is available in 1:87 and 1:43 scales, and there was a limited IAA edition of 1,000 pieces. The 6 series and X3 were also available on public days. A new 1:87 Herpa 7 series model, is the Clean Energy hydrogen version (80410147457).
Chrysler showed the Crossfire, which will be built by Karmann in Germany, and two huge 300C concept cars. A showcase contained some 1:24 and 1:18 models of the Crossfire above, and a 1940s Woody. New on display from Citroen was the little C2; the model is already available from Norev.
Ford showed a new mpv based on the Focus, called the C-Max, but no model of it.
Jaguar showed the X-Type estate, a project for model car makers? Maserati unveiled the impressive new Quattroporte, launched also in 1:18 scale by Mattel Hot Wheels.
Mazda proudly unveiled the new Mazda 3. The RX8 was on show, and available in 1:18 and 1:64 scales, both by Auto Art, below. Mercedes-Benz showed the new SLR, another 'collector's car' to disappear straight into private collections? The SLR was there in 1:87 and 1:18 scale. Also displayed was a design study for a four-door CLS coupe, and the Mille Miglia 300 SLR of Moss.
Their luxury brand Maybach showed the 'short' 57 and the longer 62 with a Zeppelin from the early 1930s, also as a model car in 1:8 scale. The main exhibits at Opel were the new Astra, available from Spring 2004, the Vectra Caravan and a design study for a quality car called Insignia, below. A 1:43 Vectra Caravan will be available soon from Schuco. The Astra will be made in 1:43 scale for the launch in spring 2004 by Minichamps, who also got the order to make the Tigra's successor in 1:43 scale. Alongside Opel's stand was an exhibition of GM design studies and concept cars, the most interesting being Buick Y-Job, Ur-Saab and Vauxhall Lightning.
Peugeot showed their Hoggar design study in an appropriate desert diorama. Crossing a real desert in it would be a nightmare. Volkswagen's most important new car was the Golf V, once again bigger and more expensive, available as a one piece injection moulded plastic recycling model, and as a scale model in 1:87, 1:43, 1:18 and 1:12. The two door 1:43 version is by Schuco.
Some other automotive companies gave models. Behr radiator and heating systems had a 1:87 artic tanker, left, their competitor Mann & Hummel had a 1:87 Messerschmitt cabin scooter by Wiking left. TRW had two models, a 1:87 BMW 3 series cabriolet by Herpa and a Siku BMW Z3. DHL, now part of German Post, had a Ford Transit 2000 in their livery, above, and German Telecom had a remote-controlled sports coupe. Some model car manufacturers had their own stands. Herpa had some models in show liveries, Minichamps had a 1:43 New Mini in special livery, limited to 500 pieces and Wiking also had two 1:87 models, a Porsche 356 coupe and a Mercedes CLK.
Hall 9 housed an exhibition of old Red Cross vehicles and a 1:87 display of ambulances from East and West Germany. The number of exhibitors was down, some halls being completely empty and stands were smaller, so for example VW only had hall 3.0 for all their range of brands. In previous years, VW set out a massive spread of food for the press, but this year they only had soup and pretzels. Let's hope that this new parsimony will be reflected in the prices of cars, which are reaching astronomical heights.

WORLD NEWS

FERRARI 250GT EUROPE
By Jan Miedema

A superb 1:43 kit of the Ferrari 250 GT Europe is made by Monza Models, a really good modeller, but because of the fairly high price of his models, his sales are a bit slow. Monza Models only intends to make about 15 built models, but it is possible that a few more could be made.
It has engine detail and an openable bonnet, so the retail price of a kit is around 90.00 ?uros, and around 270.00 ?uros for a handbuilt model. Monza also produce a few dioramas of the car, featuring the rusty remains of the chassis, gearbox and engine as found, the car in the body shop and finally the car in perfect restored condition. This diorama is very expensive at around 100000 ?uros. It is only for the happy few I guess, but an absolutely unique piece of work.

NEWS FROM BTS

By Barry Smith

My company, BTS Mouldings, has been known for many years as a maker of spare parts for Dinky and Corgi Toys and for Scalextric, among many other parts. We have also, from time to time, made 1:43 scale models of British Le Mans cars. The latest in this line is the MG TD Mk II from Le Mans 1951, #43. People who have seen us at Toy Fairs, Classic Car Shows and Autojumbles in the last 18 months or so will have seen this model, but unfinished, because up to now we been unable to find a rear view of the car. But thanks to a very nice man from Germany we now have the information to complete this model. As promised, he will receive the first built model of the finished car. The model will only be supplied handbuilt, and it will be a limited run.
BTS Mouldings has been in business since the end of 1969. We were involved in making full-size racing cars, more precisely making the masters from which the fibre glass bodies would be made. Among the cars we helped to create were Ford GT70, Hesketh F1 cars, de Cadenet Le Mans cars from 1976 onwards and a few of the Penske Indy cars from the late 1970s to the early 80s.
Our next model project is one of the real cars with which we were involved, the Nomad 2 litre Group 6 sports car that raced at Le Mans in 1969. My involvement with the car was after the race, when we changed the car from a long body to a short body for sprint races. The model we are making is that of the Le Mans car of 1969, and should be completed in the next two months, again as a handbuilt model only. Other models in the pipeline include the Jowett Jupiter R1s that raced at Le Mans in 1952, for which I have been given a lot of assistance from members of the Jowett Owners Club.
For more details, contact BTS Mouldings, Rear of 19/21 Mount Road, Hastings, East Sussex, TN35 5LB, England. Tel-fax (+44) 01424 722279.

That year, Courage had two second place finishes, at Monaco and the US
Grand Prix. For the following season, Williams entered the factory built
