SOME GREAT CONTRIBUTIONS

Yes, we’re back, with a thank you to everyone who wished us a good holiday. Here is the first MAR of our second half year, and I am pleased to welcome back some contributors we haven’t seen for a while, alongside our regular bunch of faithful authors. Max Tomlinson looks at the ‘Bugatti’ record breaking aircraft (and points out that it isn’t really a Bugatti).

Instead of his usual construction equipment studies Tony Steenmeyer investigates the diecast replicas available of French Dinky Toys. Jean-Louis Pothin shows us more off-road vehicles he has found on his worldwide peregrinations, and tells us he is off to North Korea (yes, really) to see what else he can find...

... And we have the usual excellent input from Hans-Georg Schmitt, Graeme Watt, Dave Turner, Maz Woolley and others.

THAT WOULD BE MORE LIKE IT
by Rod Ward

Above left is an advertisement for the original Mettoy Corgi Toys range from almost exactly 50 years ago. Guess what? Their latest model of a then-new car was the Austin A40, the same subject chosen by Hornby to release in their current Corgi-branded range (see picture on page 04). Now, of course, the A40 is a 50 year old ‘classic’, which made me think once more about the prime period in which classic car subjects are of interest. When the A40 model was first made it was June 1959, pretty much 50 years on from the time when the modern motor car was established in a recognisable form. It is an unfortunate fact that models of pre-1909 cars still do not interest many collectors. In fact, when Corgi introduced the ‘Corgi Classics’ range in 1964 their earliest subject was a 1910 car. The first four subjects chosen were a 1915 Ford Model T, a 1927 Bentley, a 1910 Daimler and a 1910 Renault. Of these four, by far the most popular was the Bentley above right. The era chosen for these classic cars was 1910 to 1927, from 37 to 54 years earlier, out of the 55 year era of the ‘modern’ car (1909 to 1964).

In 2009 a similar period 37 to 54 years ago would represent cars from 1955 to 1972, and that seems to be the target period on which Hornby’s Corgi range are now concentrating.

But in 2009 we are 100 years from that same start point in 1909, so interesting cars have now been made for almost twice as many years. If we consider that 37 years ago might still be a reasonable ‘most recent’ period for a classic (ie a car made in 1972) then in reality 1:43 model subjects should be selected from the whole period, 1910 to 1972. Then, considering that a lot of 1950s and 1960s cars have already been modelled, more subjects should be chosen from earlier eras, maybe with a few from the very end of the period added as well. Hundreds of notable and/or interesting British cars have never been modelled in 1:43 scale from the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, most of which would be good sellers. Add some cars from the late 1960s to the early 1970s, but fewer by comparison with earlier decades when more important subjects are still waiting to be made.

Back in 1959 Corgi (and Dinky) made models of the latest cars on the market, hence the A40 release, and this policy should also be pursued by model car makers today. Norev, Schuco, Minichamps and others do a great job making most significant new cars, but it is surely up to the British-based ranges to include cars still made in Britain; Jaguar, Morgan, Bentley...

So this is a plea to manufacturers (yes, Corgi and Oxford, but also anyone else who is listening); please make more British cars which have never been modelled, from 1910 to 1955 (and current cars). Now is your chance to exploit an underdeveloped area. To adapt Corgi’s 1959 advertising slogan; That would be more like it.

AUTO REVIEW: WOLSELEY

The latest Auto Review book is now available, on Wolseley. Frederick Wolseley, Herbert Austin and William Morris all feature in this story, among many other famous figures in British auto-motive history. Wolseley was a pioneering maker of cars in Britain, but as a subsidiary of Vickers they also built aircraft, aero engines, railcars, boat engines, armoured cars, trucks, buses, munitions and even a gyrocar. There was a lot of activity for the first three decades, then Wolseley was allowed to go bankrupt by Vickers and the firm was bought by William Morris. Wolseley aero engines were named after Vipers and other creatures with a sting. The cars were often given similar names, Beetle, Wasp or Hornet. Nowadays the six cylinder Wolseley Hornet is recalled with affection, but in the 1930s fans of classic vintage cars saw the rebodied ‘sports’ Hornets as vulgar and pretentious. It has been said that it was due to the Woolly Whore’s Nest that a group of enthusiasts for ‘proper sports cars’ founded the Vintage Sports Car Club. Wolseley was incorporated into the Nuffield organisation to be upmarket of Morris cars, then into the British Motor Corporation and British Leyland. At each stage Wolseley lost a little more of its individuality, with Wolseley- badged Farina saloons, Minis, 1100s, ‘Landcrabs’ and ‘Wedges’. The name faded away in the 1970s, and today few enthusiasts realise what an important role Wolseley played in the history of the automobile.

Now here is the latest appeal for material I can include in future Auto Review books: future titles include Armstrong-Siddeley, British coachbuilding companies, Daf cars, Alvis, Aston Martin, Lagonda, Hillman, Singer, aviatrices (lady pilots), Jensen (and other British cars with American engines; Allard, Railton etc) and many other subjects (20+ others in our plan so far).

If you have any illustrations (advertisements, brochures, your own photographs etc) or any personal anecdotes you can offer on any subject, please send them to me as soon as possible for inclusion in future publications. I also invite your suggestions for future titles...

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod Ward

The Maidenhead Static Model Club, as noted in their newsletter, Wheel Bearings, has always supported children’s charities, but it has been suggested that they also support charities more related to their aged and ailing membership. they invite suggestions for suitable charities from members, and other clubs may well also go down this road. In Wheelspin, the long-established magazine of the Coventry Diecast Model Club, El Presidente (and ex-Editor) Will Roe writes admiringly about Showcase, the West Australian Model Collectors Club magazine. He notes, as I have done, how editor Keith Allen packs every issue of Showcase with information, but hopes it isn’t becoming a one-man band, which might cause Keith to burn out. He encourages other WAMCC members to contribute and share the load. Tellingly, Keith had begun a really good series of articles on British car makers, and invited responses from members to continue it. No-one replied so, sadly, he has terminated the series. John Roberts, chairman of the Wessex Toy and Model Collectors, notes in their newsletter Smalltalk, that the 2009 Club model in its 25th Anniversary year will be a dark silver version of the forthcoming Lansdowne ‘vintage’ Bentley of which details are still secret...
