EDITORIAL

WE'RE BACK AGAIN

Yes, here we are again, after our summer break. Thank you all for your good wishes. Yes, we did enjoy our holidays. But now we are refreshed and back to the fray with what is, in my opinion, a very interesting issue of the print version of MAR, with something for almost everyone, and lots of news as well. Articles in our print sister (along with hundreds of pictures) include features on Ford Y types, O&K Draglines, Alvis Stalwarts. Albion, Sunbeam, a big feature on model motor scooters, an update on Rolls-Royce models, new Mebetoys releases, an Aussie Mustang police car, , 64 Impala conversions, and much more, including Graeme Ogg's incredible transformation of the Schuco Rover 75 into a Tourer station wagon. Perhaps now is the time to get a subscription?

PROCESS OF EVOLUTION

The continuing process of evolution in model car collecting is marked on page 8380 by the changes proposed by Somerville Models Ltd, who will go 'direct only' from 2003. When I look back to makes which were popular with collectors, and which featured regularly in MAR 20 years ago, the contrasts are immediately apparent with today's world. We then covered numerous British handbuilt and kit makers, who all supplied their models to the 'trade' only, and who regularly supplied news to MAR. Nowadays we rarely hear from such makers as Western or SMTS, and thus we can't give news of their products in MAR (or indeed stock them at Modelauto). Other makers have closed, such as Top Marques and Pathfinder, and certain others now only supply direct to the public. We publish news of these latter ranges, when we have it, but some proprietors of smaller ranges are reluctant to publish news too widely, as they no longer have capacity to fulfil demand if too many buyers appear. In the past, the diecast ranges were usually sold to retail shops by an exclusive wholesale distributor, who publicised the models to the specialist press, including MAR. There are now fewer specialist wholesalers, and in any case many makers cannot afford to build a wholesale mark-up into their prices, without pushing their prices into a higher band. So, such companies as Bang of Italy and Norev of France now supply direct to retail outlets, not using wholesale distributors, and many will also supply collectors direct, if no local stockist is available. What has not yet filtered through to some of these makers is that they now have to do their own worldwide publicity, as they no longer have local distributors to do the job for them, sending out samples for photography, and news items etc.
This is part of the continuum, bigger firms now supply shops direct, doing without wholesale distributors, smaller firms now supply collectors direct, doing without retail shops. But everyone still needs to publicise their products where collectors and other potential buyers read about them, in specialist magazines such as MAR. Some companies are still admirably publicity conscious, especially those based in France and Germany, and we get regular news from such firms as Corgi, Herpa, Revell, Norev, Eligor and the many French artisan kit and handbuilt makers.
Some other makers supply news via our German correspondent, Hans-Georg Schmitt, and most of them are pleased with whatever coverage we give to their products. I was somewhat taken aback, therefore, by a complaint passed on by Hans-Georg from a major German-based automobile group. Apparently they thought that models of their latest car were not given adequate coverage in MAR, so they wouldn't supply news of their new models in future unless we gave them more prominence. Maybe that's the way they talk to German publications, but it doesn't work here!
We cover in MAR all items I think will be of interest to our readers, and I decide how much space it gets.
. We don't charge for that coverage, but we also don't accept demands for more space or a specific type of coverage from anyone.
If they don't supply any more news to us, so be it.
All the more space for those folk who appreciate the efforts of MAR and its contributors!

CLUB NEWS

Volkswagen Model Club: as the 97th issue of the VWMC magazine is attained, Jim McLachlan still isn't a happy chappie. With 21 subscriptions still unpaid, some from long-standing members, the future of the Club is still in doubt. Like most other one-make (as opposed to regionally based general-interest) model collectors clubs, there are no meetings, and no committee, just a regular magazine to link the members. But, just like other clubs, most of the work devolves to a few keen members, the rest of the membership being largely composed of passive 'consumers'. Those consumers seem to be losing interest and drifting away, a phenomenon being experienced by all clubs, not to mention magazines and manufacturers as well. When you already start with a relatively small membership pool, a couple of dozen non-renewals may result in disaster for a club. It would be a pity if the VWMC failed, because the handful of members who add their efforts to the main drive of Jim McLachlan contribute to a fascinating and useful club publication. Indeed, Fabian Houchangnia (well-known to MAR readers) has written an open letter in which he angrily expresses his disappointment at the non-support of certain other members. He points out that if it wasn't for Jim and his efforts the club wouldn't exist, so members should support him. If you'd like to lend your support to the club, write to Jim at VWMC, 20 Waverley Park, Redding, Falkirk, FK2 9RT, Scotland, or you can email him at volkswagen.modelclub@virgin.net

Natal Diecast Model Collectors: Until recently Jan de Winnaar was Secretary, Treasurer and Newsletter Editor for the NDMC, but the death of his wife hit him hard, and together with heart problems, he felt that he could not carry on with these tasks, and resigned. Now the members of the Club are sad to hear that he has died, and that his family has decided to sell his collection of Mercedes-Benz models. But life goes on for the Club, including a number of new members, who will be disappointed to hear that Dana Kruger will no longer be able to offer hot snacks to members (only bags of crisps and cold drinks in future). How will they survive? The Editor is now Terry Morgan, who had to rely on other members when he had his car stolen, one of many members who have been victims of crime recently. If you'd like to know Terry's interesting and radical solutions to these social problems, you'll have to join the NDMC, and then you can read about them in the newsletter. For membership information contact Chairman Geoffrey Sear (for some unfathomable reason, known to other members as Sir Geoffrey) on 031 205 0100 (cellphone 083 235 1001).

MODELEX 2002 DISPLAYS INVITED - by Chris Derbyshire, South Hants Model Auto Club

As MAR readers know, Modelex is at a new venue for 2002. This year's show is at the NAC, Stoneleigh Park, Coventry, Warwickshire, on October 19th and 20th. The theme this year will be The Cars of Coventry, to bring together a wide variety of vehicles made in the local area. Cars include Jaguar, Rootes Group, Alvis, Triumph etc, commercials include Alvis, and for a motorsport connection, Jaguar, Coventry Climax, Peugeot Rally etc. We are looking for collections of these, and of any others, to display at Modelex 2002. The models can be of any construction, and all will be securely displayed in locked glass cases, but you will be responsible for delivery, display and removal. Entry tickets will be provided, but you have to arrange your own travel and accomodation. To give a balanced presentation, we might not be able to display all your collection, so we ask you to provide a representative selection. Initially we are looking at what is available, to see it is a practical suggestion. We have a large Jaguar collection already on board, so please no more Jaguars. Please contact me, with brief details of your collection and a contact number. All information will be treated in confidence. I will try to contact all who respond, first come first served! Please telephone your details to me, Chris Derbyshire, at 01794 390036

Custom versions, fire trucks, six-wheelers, artics and every other variation imaginable can be seen here, and so can miniature Rams. Long-time MAR contributor Robert Gunn is a pal of author Don Bunn, so Robert contributed a chapter in the book on scale models and toys of the Dodge Ram pickup. Robert had 42 different models at the time the book went to press, and he supplied our review copy as well, in the hope that sales will be enhanced of his friend's production.
We are not sure who distributes Iconografix publications outside North America, but they will supply direct if you are in difficulty finding a copy from your usual dealer. Rod Ward

St PETERSBURG NEWS - By Leonid Khoykhin

Three new trolleybuses from St Petersburg Tram Collection: 416, a 1928 Versare 3880 trolleybus UL&T Co, Salt Lake City 300-311. The first large-scale US trolley system began in 1928 in Salt Lake City with ten three-axle coaches from Versare of Albany, NY. Utah Light & Traction ordered ten 43 seat trolley coaches. Coach 310, from the American Electric Railway Association, Cleveland also joined the fleet. In 1928 Cincinnati Car Co bought Versare and in 1929 sent a demonstrator to Salt Lake City (311). The Versare coaches had drive shaft and ride problems, so all were made two-axle in 1929. In 1944 the Salt Lake system was sold to National City Lines and in 1946 trolley operation ended. Also, a 1948 Los Angeles ACF-Brill TC-44 trolleybus in two liveries: LA Transit Lines fruit salad and LA Metropolitan Transit Authority two-tone green. ACF-Brill delivered 40 more coaches in 1948. In 1958 LAMTA took over LATL and MCL, and repainted the trolley coaches in its new two tone green and white, but trolley operations closed in March 1963, the last 38 coaches sold to Mexico City. CORGI BUS IN 1:1 SCALE

In a reversal of the usual practice of scaling down vehicles to create models, Wirral Council have reliveried a bus, sponsored by Arriva Northwest and previously Robbie the Routemaster in red, in the Royal purple and gold, reproducing the livery on Corgi's 1:50 Queen's Jubilee Routemaster. Corgi say that this is the first time one of their models has been blown up to full size. Corgi have also released an item in their Toys range, to mark the Golden Jubilee of HM Queen Elizabeth II, in time for the celebrations in early June, the 1:36 scale 'toy' LT1 taxi, gold with purple lettering.

WORLD NEWS

ELEGANT E-CLASS
By Hans-Georg Schmitt
The new E-Class saloon from Mercedes-Benz is not bigger, but looks more elegant than its predecessor. The front end still has four eyes, but now with more of an oriental slant. The rear lights look similar to the S-Class and C-Class cars, and the interior is top quality. Innovative technology is the aim, rather than progressive design. So for the first time the SBC electro-hydraulic brake system enters mass production. Intelligent lightweight construction, 10% of bodywork from aluminium, improved passive safety with crash sensors on the radiator cross member and more space, due to a 21mm longer wheelbase. The aerodynamics have also been improved, air-resistance reduced to a factor of 0.26. For the launch of the real car, Minichamps have made a 1:43 model (above) in brilliant silver metallic with a black interior, where all details are visible. Even the screen of the navigation system has a little road map. The wheels and baseplate are well detailed. The original German license plates SE 2002, signify the promo model, only available from DaimlerChrysler dealers as Edition E, reference B66961948 in a presentation box.

NATIONAL MINT

Further to recent mentions of the US-based National Motor Museum Mint 1:32 diecast range of models in MAR, Robert Gunn sent us one of their full page advertisements placed in US newspapers for direct purchases by the public to the makers. Along with the usual puffery about values, collectibility and authenticity there is an introductory offer of $10 per model ('Fantastic value', notes Robert) and the Iron-clad guarantee that NMM will buy back the cars at any time. 'We will pay you at least the price you paid. we will even pay more than the original price if the trading value of your car has risen'. Robert comments, 'It could cost them a lot, or maybe they are confident that there will be few, or no, claims'. We remember a similar 'guarantee' a couple of decades ago from a major manufacturer, which turned out to have more ifs and buts than were originally noticed by buyers. Many of those who tried to 'cash in' the offer were rejected, on the basis that not only had the items been unpacked from their boxes and re-packed (checkable by broken seals) but they had not been returned in the original unopened mailing cartons in which they were first shipped out by post. We are sure that this will not be the case with NMMM, but it is as well to check the small print if the Ironclad gurantee is an important factor in deciding to purchase. If it is not a factor, they are definitely good value at $10 each, as Robert notes.
The range includes:

Cord 812 convertible 1937
Packard Speedster 1930
Chrysler Imperial LeBaron 1932
Duesenberg J 1934
Ford T Runabout 1925
Ford T Pickup 1925
Ford T four seat open 1910
Ford A convertible 1931

Not very original subjects, you may well say, but what do you expect for only $10?

SUN STAR 1:18 diecast in China: Mercedes-Benz 220SE Cabriolet, 3353 in black, 3352 in silver-grey. (Photo Hans-Georg Schmitt).

PONTOON PINNACLE - By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Daimler-Benz AG launched the Mercedes-Benz 180 in 1953, their first car in pontoon design, though the late Carl Borgward had used the new style for his Borgward Hansa 1500 in 1949. After the first success of the Mercedes 180, in March 1954 the 220 appeared at the Geneva Motor Show, the first integral-bodied large saloon. The 220 was also made as a Coupe and a Cabriolet, first shown to the public at Frankfurt Motor Show in 1955. In 1958 the pinnacle of the 220 range was launched, the 220SE, with petrol injection. At Nuremberg toy fair this year Sun Star presented this car in 1:18 scale, and now it is generally available. The body accurately copies the real car, the bonnet, doors and boot lid all open and the steering works realistically. The lights, bumpers, radiator grille and much more are separate components. The engine is quite well detailed but hard to see, because the rear edge of the bonnet hits the windscreen wipers when you try to open it fully. The interior is authentic, though the seats are a bit too glossy for brown leather, but all wood applications are there. The front seat backs can be moved forward, just like the real car. The steering column is fixed the wrong way up, however, the longer gear lever should be on the right, not the left, and the twin spokes of the steering wheel should be inverted, not a V. The boot has the spare wheel in right position, and the baseplate is sufficiently detailed. The exhaust system is positioned very low, and was often damaged crossing kerbs or on bad roads. The wheels with wide white wall tyres look very good. The Mercedes-Benz 220SE Cabriolet is available In Sun Star's range of European Classics 3552 is silver-grey, 3553 is with black, both with light brown leather-look interiors.

PRIMERA PRIMACY - By Hans-Georg Schmitt

The Primera name is familiar, but it has never made any heart beat faster, since in 1990 Nissan created the successor to the colourless Bluebird. Primeras have always been unspectacular work-horses, praised for their reliability by ADAC, the German automobile club and by many others. The new Primera looks more muscular, a typical example of modern automobile architecture in which both ends look much the same, but the result is good air-resistance of 0.31. The interior is also futuristic, all the instruments positioned in the middle of the dashboard. The new Nissan Primera is also available in 1:43 and 1:87 scales. Both models reproduce the distinctive new design very well. The 1:43 model is silver metallic with a grey interior, well made in China for J-Collection of Japan. The lights, mirrors, photo-etched Nissan emblems and some interior details are separate parts. The dashboard shows well the unusual positioning of instruments and switches. The impressive looking 17 inch wheels are executed well, and the baseplate is sufficiently detailed. The 1:87 scale model also reproduces the exterior shape very well, but the interior is only sketchy, though the baseplate is adequately detailed, reading Made in China and Mat Nr 4393 but the maker remains anonymous. Both models are available from Nissan dealers.

MORE 1:87 NOREVS - By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Two more Norev 1:87 scale models have been re-issued, manufactured in China for France.
151481 Citroen 2CV 1957.. The first issue was moulded in coloured plastic, the baseplate (and thus also bumpers and radiator grille) were chromed, and there was no interior. The old plastic material distorted, but now it is made from stable ABS. Now the baseplate, body and fabric roof are painted in different shades of grey, there is an interior and the wheels look much better.
154501 Citroen HY van , in metallic gold or beige with opening side door.

Comments on the 2cv also apply to the HY van, and both models recall childhood. I played with it, then I threw it away as a child. Now, as an adult I can buy it again, to recall those happy memories.

BRUMM IS NOW 30

It is remarkable to think that Brumm is now 30 years old. It only seems like yesterday that Reno Tattarletti, of the family who made Rio models, set up Brumm, named after the plastic horse drawn vehicles (Broughams) with which he began his range. The range soon developed into a diecast model car range, and upon his death his son Rio took over the reins. Rio says that it would have been nice to have held a 30th birthday party, but that was too difficult to organise. Instead he prepared a couple of 'surprises': one is a model (the first version of the Fiat Nuova 500 from 1957) and the other is a book about the company, Librumm 1972-2002, to be published in Italian, English, French and German, to be reviewed in a future MAR issue.

CHANGES AT SOMERVILLE

Doug and Roly McHard of Somerville Models have announced some changes for the future. From the end of this year Somerville Models Ltd will continue at a lower level of production than in the past, and for direct sale only to collectors. Somerville models will only be available via 'the trade' until present outstanding orders are delivered, and thereafter models will only be supplied direct to retail buyers. No more orders will be accepted from trade outlets forthwith. From 2003 onwards Doug and Roly will run a much smaller operation, just themselves and no employees, so output will necessarily be much lower, insufficient to supply trade outlets as well as their direct sales. This does not mean 'retirement' or closure, just a lower production volume, and development of Somerville models will continue, with a new subject already planned for 2003 release.

WORLD NEWS

NEW Rialto Models

By Jan Miedema
We have released two new 1:43 Rialto models:
RM013 AC-Bristol Zagato 1958. Built by Zagato in 1958 to the order of Swiss AC representative Patthey for local races in Switzerland, and also for the Pescara rally. The rolling chassis of the AC-Bristol was sent to Milano where Zagato built the body in lightweight aluminium. The car features the famous 'double-bubble' roof, a characteristic Zagato feature. It is thought that the bubbles were for extra passenger headroom, but they also improved the aerodynamics of the car. The AC Ace, and later the AC-Bristol, chassis was famous for its roadholding and handling. It is said that the Zagato version was even better, and it reached a top speed of 185 km/h, 15 km/h more than the standard chassis due to the lightweight body and better aero-dynamics. The car had a 1971cc six cylinder Bristol engine with 130 bhp, about 25 bhp more than the standard Bristol engine, which also gave a higher top speed. Five famous firms were involved: AC for the chassis, Zagato for the body, BMW, Frazer-Nash and Bristol for the engine. Frazer-Nash was the UK BMW representative before the Second World War and they brought the BMW 328 two litre engine to the UK, which later evolved into the Bristol engine. This BMW-derived engine was built by Bristol until they switched to big Chevrolet V8 engines. The car we have modelled stayed a few years in Switzerland, later was sold to England, and by the mid Eighties the car turned up in the Rosso Bianco Collection, at Aschaffenburg in Germany. Sometime in the Nineties it was sold back to the Patthey family in Switzerland.
I believe it is now a wreck. Unfortunately I have no sources who can confirm what happened to the second car, or even if one was ever built. Maybe MAR readers have some information on this subject. The Rialto model is available in kit form or handbuilt in the original bright red. The model has wire wheels and photo-etched parts. Decals include the AC-Bristol badge, Zagato logo, dash instruments, the original Swiss registration from the Vaudoise-Waadt canton and the red AC emblems on the wheels.
RM012 Opel Astra-G OPC 1999 (two door hatchback). This is a special from the Opel Performance Centre (OPC) in Germany. This car was developed by the OPC (chassis and interior) and Lotus, who tuned the two litre engine. Only 2,500 of these cars were made and sold by Opel. Our model features all typical properties of the orginal car including the rear wing, front spoiler and OPC badges. The model is handbuilt in three original colours: arden blue mica, solid black and star silver metallic. 50 models will be sold in a limited edition with the engine included in a small diorama. The rest of the built models are sold unlimited. There is also a kit version. And good news for collectors of Chevrolet, Vauxhall and Holden models, our Astra-G model is also available handbuilt in these versions, to special order. In that case appropriate LHD and RHD dashboards are included, as well as other grilles, badges and wheels. A standard Opel will also be available. The standard handbuilt Astra-G will be available in magma red or dark blue metallic. A kit for the standard version will also be available. Up to now no model of the Astra-G two door hatchback in 1:43 scale has been made. Rialto Models are obtainable via the trade or direct from: Rialto Models, Parkdreef 173, 2724 ET Zoetermeer, The Netherlands. Tel-Fax 0031 79331 7676, e-mail rialtomod@hetnet.nl

Publication Review - by Rod ward

BRUNO'S LATEST MAGAZINE

Bruno Boracco's name is well-known to readers of Model Auto Review for his expertise and enthusiasm.
He is now the Editor-in-Chief of Miniauto & Collectors, a magazine for collectors published every four months in Italy by Giorgio Nada Editore. It has dual language text, in Italian and English, and is slightly wider than A4, though the same page height. It is as sumptuously produced as we might expect from this publisher and is on extraordinarily thick 'paper' (more like thin card, in fact) with a square spine which makes the publication about five times as thick as MAR. This gives the impression of lots of pages, but in fact there are only 64 pages, which are printed in full glowing colour throughout, though the pictures are so large that in most cases there are not more than half a dozen photographs per page. Bruno and his publishers are too experienced to fall into the trap of making pictures bigger than the original models. They are, however, about the same size as the real models, making one photograph of a 1:18 scale car take up a third of a page. The issue we have seen included the 2002 news from Nuremberg, so it may not be typical of all issues, but there seemed to be a lot of photos with sparse listings and with little meaty text on those news pages. Indeed, 28 pages were taken up with this coverage, leaving room for only five other feature articles. They were on Porsche 356 models (ten pages), Corvette Sting Rays (six pages), Märklin 1800 series (five pages), Fiat 682 trucks (three pages) and Monte Carlo Rally winners (two pages). If your interest field is included, that will be fine, but so few subject headings must mean that some readers will not find anything in their own chosen field mentioned. That would be all right if this was an inexpensive magazine, but it is actually fairly pricey. It costs 10.32 ?uros on a bookstand in Italy (almost £7.00) and by subscription for three copies per year, it costs 63 ?uros in Europe (equivalent to about £13.50 per copy) or 70 ?uros in the rest of the World (about £15.00 per copy). No doubt the excessive weight of the materials used make it very expensive to post. We have mentioned before in MAR that continental Europeans seem to value their magazines more highly that Anglo-Saxons do, and are thus prepared to pay higher prices for them, rather than the feeling that they should be cheap and disposable, as is the perception in Britain, North America and Australasia. No doubt this will mean that Miniauto & Collectors will be very popular in Italy, where its quality of writing and presentation will be valued, but it will struggle in other countries at the high price asked.
By most Continental European standards, Model Auto Review is fairly cheap by subscription, but as a means of getting some Anglophone perspective on this, Joe Sherlock of Washington State recently wrote that, 'Model Auto Review is the most expensive magazine we get in this household. (I get 52 issues of AutoWeek for about $23.00, for example.) Nevertheless, I continue to subscribe to MAR because it is the only informed source for what's going on in the world of model cars. I no longer get regular mailings from any of my old mail order sources...' If you wish to subscribe to Miniauto & Collectors, and to keep yourself informed, with Bruno's useful text and Nada's heavy presentation, contact Giorgio Nada Editore, Via Claudio Treves 15/17, 20090 Vimodrone (MI) Italy, fax: +39 02-27301126, email: info@giorgionadaeditore.it

ANSON PASSAT

ANSON 1:18 diecast in China: Shanghai-built VW Passat long wheelbase saloon. It took some time for the Chinese government to embrace the motor car. At first only trucks and other commercial vehicles were seen on the roads of China among the innumerable bicycles, very few cars. Mao Tse Tung had a taste for Western automobiles, using a lwb Mercedes-Benz 600. Then gradually the car percolated down Chinese society, and one of the first foreign car companies to benefit was Volkswagen. The Santana was hard to sell in Europe, so the whole production line had been transferred to Brazil, then the same Santana line was moved to China in 1985, still in production today. But Chinese tastes have moved on, so some Audi models and the VW Passat were added to the range. The Passat was stretched 140 mm to give more legroom in the back. This same body is now being used in Europe for the Skoda Superb. Anson of China have made an excellent model of the lengthened Passat, black with all the chromework of the real car and a beige interior. The new length makes the car better proportioned. The bonnet, all four doors and the boot lid all open. The engine is very well detailed, the interior floor is covered in flock, looking just like carpet. The steering and rear suspension work realistically. Anson can produce a 'surprise', because with only minor changes, the model can be converted into a Skoda Superb. The 1:18 VW Passat is hard to find in Europe. If in difficulty you can contact German distributor JMV GmbH., Wildermuthstrasse 88; D-80993 München, Germany. Tel: 089/148866-0, Fax: 089/148866-66; email: jmv-gmbh@t-online.de. (Notes Hans-Georg Schmitt).

TRAX ROADSHOW 2002 - By John Comber

The Trax Roadshow is a biennial afternoon of talks, films, questions, and a display of new Trax models, diecast Australian cars in 1:43 and 1:24 scales. The Trax Roadshow visits five of Australia's state capitals in June and July, open to Trax club members only, who are given a free satchel of goodies. A short film on Motoring History in Australia was followed by a welcome from director Robert Hill who then led us on a guided tour, with colour slides, of the factory in China where Trax models are made. Robert described the region before showing over 70 stages of manufacture, from pouring the molten metal into the die to closing the lid on the box. A talk on the history of Trax was followed by news of future models and the third edition of the Trax book. Co-director Frank Tregallis shared the Question and Answer segment with Robert, then during the tea break members could view a selection of latest and proposed models, including a 1:24 scale Chrysler Valiant Charger with the new feature of wind-up windows. The new two tone blue colour scheme for the Holden FJ sedan now features real leather seat coverings. Other models displayed were a 1956 Holden FE sedan and a Leyland P76 in an unfinished state, both 1:43 scale, as well as a Holden EH panel van in approximately 1:24 solid block form, obviously in the very early stages of development.

JAL 43 CLOSES DOWN

After a long period with no news from the JAL 43 range, made in Spain, we finally have confirmation that it closed in 2001. Joan Albert Larrosa of Barcelona made some unique subjects in 1:43 scale (Pegaso Bacalao, Bisiluro, Voisin Biscuter etc) which will be sorely missed.

REVELL CHEVY

Revell1:12 plastic kit: 07489 Chevrolet Coupe 1957. The introduction of the V8 engine in 1955 brought with it a change in Chevrolet's image. Even the young began to take an interest in the new cars which were succeeded two years later by the 57 Chevy with its inimitable appearance. Under the bonnet was a powerful 4,6 litre engine which, depending on the version, developed up to 283 bhp. The Chevrolet Bel Air Coupe kit has a one-piece, accurately shaped body without opening doors or boot lid, Chromed bumpers, radiator grille, detailed interior and three highly detailed V8 engines can build three different versions, and the bonnet is detachable. The body and all other components are moulded in plastic with obvious flash and mould split lines, so careful fettling is needed. Extensive painting is necessary to get a really authentic model. GERMANY

MUSEUM MODELS - By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Usually museums exhibit cars, aircraft, railway equipment or ships, but the two main German Technical Museums, near Sinsheim and in Speyer, are the exception. Both include items from all four categories. There are cars, motor-cycles, commercials and military vehicles and showcases full of rare model cars at both locations. Cars have been collected from all over the world, including many rare and now-defunct marques, including a prestigious Maybach which was converted into a mobile saw after the war, and is displayed unrestored. The last surviving Mercedes-Benz G4 three-axle cross country vehicle in Germany is there, used by the Nazi hierarchy for parades. The museum shops at Sinsheim and Speyer offer many models, sometimes special museum promos. Currently there is a Wiking 1:87 Opel Blitz truck for Sinsheim (above), and a Matchbox Yesteryear Mercedes-Benz L5 van from 1932, (see colour pages) made for the tenth anniversary of the Museum at Speyer. These two items are almost sold out, but new items are expected. Also available is a catalogue, showing most items displayed at both sites, on 270 pages with big colour photos, and a double CD ROM is available with more than 1000 pictures and more than an hour of video clips. The museums are open daily, including Sundays and bank holidays. Telephone: Sinsheim: 07261/61116, and for Speyer: 06232/78844 and 6708-0.

REVELL 1:18 diecast in China for Germany: 28501 Renault Sport Clio V6, originally exhibited as a concept car at the Paris Motor Show in 1998, based on the Trophy racing version. The bulging wings cover 17 inch wide tyres, and it has air intakes in the sides like a Formula One racer. As well as good handling, the Clio Sport includes many luxury features: leather seats, air conditioning, central locking and power steering. The six cylinder 24 valve three litre engine accelerates the car from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds, reaching a top speed 235 km/h. Final assembly is done by TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing). One hopes it will be more fire-resistant than its predecessor, the R5 Turbo, which could often be seen as a burned out wreck at the roadside. The front-lid, doors and tailgate all open and the engine cover can be removed, revealing the V6 engine. It is silver metallic with blue and grey interior, and the steering works realistically. (Notes Hans-Georg Schmitt).

OPEL KAPITAN - By Hans-Georg Schmitt

>From November 1953 the successful Opel Kapitan gained a completely new, 'pontoon-style' body. This American-influenced design suited the affluent citizens of the new Federal Republic of Germany, and the vehicle became a bestseller. In 1956 the car was given a major facelift, now with an aluminium radiator grille and 2473cc straight six cylinder engine 2473, developing 75 hp at 3900 rpm., good for a maximum speed of 140 km/h. On 9 November 1956 the two millionth Opel vehicle left the production line in Rüsselsheim. This was a Kapitan, but in a very special finish. The body was ivory, the roof gold metallic and all the usually chromed parts were gold-finished.
This is the latest model car in the Opel Car Collection, (pictured in the centre pages of this issue) available from Opel dealers, ref 9162797. In blue it will be in the Opel Team Collection, only available to Opel employees. Schuco made this model, in the two millionth scheme with gold-plated bumpers and radiator grille and many other components are separate parts. The interior also looks just like the original car, which still exists in the Opel car collection, and is sometimes displayed in exhibitions.
