Model Auto Review News Archive

August 2000

WE'RE BACK!

We have now returned, slightly refreshed from our short Summer break, with some little changes to your favourite magazine. You will note that the long-forewarned cover price rise has now arrived. With regret we have had to increase the price to £3.90, which does not actually cover our increased production costs since last time there was a price rise, but we'll live with it. I think MAR still offers unrivalled value for money! And it could be free...

FREE MODEL AUTO REVIEW?

Every MAR issue in print form from now on will include a voucher to obtain 10% discount on purchases of models or books from Modelauto Ltd, up to a maximum value of £100.00 retail. That means the voucher is worth up to £10.00, so if you use it, your copy of MAR is FREE! You have to clip out the voucher, and send it with your order, fully completed, to benefit from the discount, unless you are a direct subscriber from Modelauto Ltd in Leeds. If you are, you just have to state the fact when you order, so we can check our computer records and release the discount. All others must send in completed vouchers to get the discount, sorry! If you don't want to mutilate your cherished MAR, just buy a second copy... And if you decide to buy two or more copies in order to send in two or more vouchers, we can't stop you doing that! But please note the limited period within which the voucher can be used. There will be another one next month, when this one goes out of date. If you are late getting this issue of MAR, and the voucher is already out of date, I'm sorry, there are no exceptions. Just try to ensure that you get next month's issue in good time.

WELCOME avia mini

From now on all even-numbered issues of MAR (144, 146, 148 etc) will also include, free of charge, our sister publication avia mini. If you are not interested in it, just pull it out smartly from the centre pages and give it to someone who is interested in model and toy aircraft. In order to read it, just separate it from MAR and slit the top of the A5 pages, then fold it in half. Hey Presto! An A5 magazine. If, on the other hand you would prefer just to subscribe to avia mini and do without MAR, it is available as a ready-folded and stapled A5 publication.

St PETERSBURG NEWS
By Leonid Khoykhin

After the MTA Boston Texas Ranger PCC, an original Dallas version is out now (157). In June 1942 Dallas Railway & Terminal Co. (DR&T) ordered 25 double-ended PCCs from Pullman-Standard (order W6699) and in June 1945 they entered service. The new cars were in a red, white and gray livery, like Pacific Electric PCCs. From 1949, they were repainted cream and red. PCCs 601-625, ran in Dallas until January 1956. They were offered for sale in 1954, but it was 1958-59 that they finally went to Bosto. A new bus-trolleybus range is also out now. The Renault R4190 underfloor engined bus was launched in October 1949. In September 1950 the two-man city bus R4230 was announced. Two years later, a 120 hp engine was added and the modified bus was called R4231. 129 were built, up to 1957. Versailles was one of the last customers for the R4231. 26 were acquired in 1957 to replace the city's blue and grey trams. These versions of the R4231 are available now:

215 - 1957 Versailles
215a - 1952 Belgrade
215b - 1952 Madrid

Madrid EMT (Empresa Municipal de Trans-portes) ordered 26 R4231s in 1952 to follow 24 one-man R4210s in 1951. The large bus fleet (677 in 1955), consisted mainly of Leylands, Guys and locally built Pegaso Z-404s. Trolleybus operation in Madrid started in April 1950, the first trolleybuses supplied by Jacquemond of France. In 1957 some of the surviving Renault R4210 and R4231 buses were converted to trolleybuses in addition to 14 new three-axle Vetra VA3 B2s, acquired in the mid-50s. The last new trolleybus routes opened in 1961 but in 1966 the whole system converted to diesel buses. Madrid Renault R4231 trolleybus (192) is also out now. The new racing transporter is also out now, 221 1942-54 Bedford OWB coach, Cliff Allison Lotus Team Transporter. For more info, contact St Petersburg Tram Collection PO Box. A Right Royal Occasion
(for the 30mm tall)
By Graeme Watt

Craigton Barracks in Aberdeen is a veritable hive of activity just now, as preparations for the opening parade of Grampian Miiniature Transport Collectors' Great Exhibition 2000 get underway. The exhibition, sponsored by The National Trust for Scotland, takes place at Crathes Castle on Royal Deeside over three weekends in October, the 7th-8th, 14th-15th and 21st-22nd.The 'Parade' will be honoured by a Royal personage (30mm tall of course). Meanwhile, the combined bands of the Scots Guards and Royal Marines are rehearsing on the parade ground, as seen below. I knew those London Transport double decker buses would come in handy! The King's display troop of the RHA are also going through their paces below. In the Exhibition Hall will be a large 0 gauge railway layout, an operating tramcar display, hands-on Scalextric circuit, vintage bus collection, military models and many other diverse subjects and dioramas. We hope to meet many MAR readers there.

A SHRINKING TOY WORLD

In the past the widest availability of collectors models has been in general toy shops and hobby-model outlets, rather than in specialist collectors shops. sadly, therefore, we can now confirm that Era Group is placing the Beatties model and hobby shops into a 'company voluntary arrangement', closing 34 of their 60 UK high street stores in the process. Many smaller companies in the model business are in similar difficulties, though they don't make the headlines as they struggle to survive, or decide to close down. A bigger fish flounder-ing right now is London's famous Hamleys toy store. The 240 year old firm has been through many hands in the last few years, and went public six years ago, lost £2.5 million last year and was trying to go private again, but the price offered by venture capital companies is said to be less than half Hamleys' stock market valuation of recent years. The story continues, as sources for collectors models in the world's high streets and shopping malls disappear. As it gets harder to find models, even those potential recruits to collecting that may exist will not be exposed to models in order to decide that they might like to collect them. The market for model railways, like that for model cars, has gone beyond 'maturity', as young buyers turn to computer games, electronics, and even mobile phones. Hornby has put itself up for sale, despairing of its chances of survival alone, and hoping to find a buyer among the major international toy groups, though it is thought that the really big players find 00 scale British outline trains not international enough to interest them. Many owners of smaller companies are considering their future. A Smith Auto Models and Hart Models will combine their kit and handbuilt model activities in the future. Other firms don't have such tidy prospects, and in most cases once the owners retire there will be no prospective buyer for the business. We expect, therefore, to see a process of famous names gradually disappearing over the next decade. Current means of survival for manufacturers include different ways to sell their products, which may mean breaking accepted market conventions, or even existing distribution agreements. This has affected the middle of the distribution chain, with many wholesalers shrinking, changing hands or even closing recently. Britain's long-established

Modeltime Wholesale Ltd is in process of closing down, finding current market conditions untenable. They were UK distributors of Vitesse Group, Conrad, and Italian ranges Brumm, Bang, Best, etc. On the other hand, Netherlands distrib-utor Replicars has found a new owner who is enthusiastic about the future. Randolph Bath, son of founder the late Leslie Hurle Bath, has sold out to Jaap van Dijk, but Randolph will remain for a period as MD to assist the hand-over. Some manufacturers have decided to supply the retailer direct, not through the wholesalers or even by-passing their own national subsidiaries. For instance, Revell will now supply UK shops direct from Germany. And certain other makers have indicated that they see their future ultimately only supply-ing collectors direct, not using retailers or wholesalers, after the fashion of the 'Mints'.

We'll keep you up to date on the many changes currently affecting the model market.

DINKY BOOK SUPPLEMENT
By Jan Ellenbroek

Horace Dunkley, Dirk Schleuer and myself have compiled the first supplement to our Dinky Collection book, to be published soon, we hope in mid July. Once again we have had invaluable help from leading Dinky collectors around the world for which we are most grateful. The printer has again produced brilliant digital photographs, with superb close-ups where necessary. There have been quite a few variations reported since we brought out the 1999 book, plus several new code 2 issues. Also there has been a huge increase in number of models released under the Dinky name. For the first supplement, we had to decide how to present it, bearing in mind that a lot of collectors have decided to collect only models made from the original Matchbox Dinky tooling. Consequently this first supplement consists of two parts. There will be a total of 24 new pages, eight of which the printer included for free as he was not satisfied with the quality of the original print run, for inclusion in the 1999 binder. The second part is a new binder with Book 2 on the spine. This has 19 pages featuring lists of all the models that have been made from Models of Yesteryear, Convoy and King Size tooling, plus the military tanks and the all new American tractor, and tractor-trailer units. Once again we have been supported by Matchbox Collectibles in that they have given us permission to produce a code 2 Dinky model to accompany this first supplement. Limited to 5000 pieces only, the chosen model this time will be the Porsche 356A recoloured in white, packaged in our familiar blue and white Dinky style picture box. This code 2 Dinky model will only be available with the new supplement, it will not be available on its own. This model, together with the first white Bel Air book model, looks very nice, like father and son! Everybody interested in the first supplement and model can write to Dirk Schleuer, Weyerstrasse 307, 42719 Solingen, Germany or Jan Ellenbroek Postbus 1227, 7301, BL Apeldoorn, Holland.

ANSON LINKS TWO ERAS
By Hans-Georg Schmitt)

Two new 1:18 diecast model cars by Anson of Hong Kong show the great differences in US car design from the 1950s to today. In the Anson Classic Range is 30384 Studebaker Golden Hawk, first revealed to the public in 1957, the mode's well-shaped body finished in gold with white painted tail scoops. Many details are separate components, the outer rear view mirrors even have the Mercedes star like three ribs on the front. The bonnet and doors open, and steering works realistically. Under the bonnet is open, the huge supercharged V8 engine is revealed. The interior also looks good, the seats, in white artificial leather and golden lurex cloth are very fifties. The wheels have spoked chrome hub caps and wide white wall tyres, but the baseplate could be more detailed. From today Anson make 30318, the Dodge Viper RT/10, an impressive 1:12 scale model car, a limited edition of 3999. The Dodge Viper is a two seater with rear wheel drive and a V10 ohv engine. In 1989 at the Detroit Auto Show, the Viper concept car had a positive response, so within a year Team Viper built a working prototype. A hand built Viper was finished in time to pace the 1991 Indy 500, driven by Carroll Shelby. Production Vipers arrived in 1992 and development of the Viper GTS coupe and the GTS-R followed. It is now one of the world s finest sport cars. In 1996 the GTS-R achieved a top ten finish at Le Mans. In 1997 and 1998, the Viper brought Chrysler two double world championships. The Anson Viper has an authentically shaped and finished bodyand a super detailed interior. The bonnet, doors and boot open just like in the real car. Under the open bonnet is the huge V10 engine which develops 450 hp. A special ACR (American Club Racer) sports version reaches 506 hp. There is a cloth package in the boot, secured by belts, but it is unclear what it is for. The interior is excellent, even the sun visors are movable and the seat-belts can be stretched. It is a pity that the huge side-pipes are not allowed on the real cars in Europe. The alloy wheel rims, tyres and brake discs underline the impressive appearance, and the suspension works realistically. The baseplate is quite well detailed, but the wishbones could be better moulded. Both models are available from Anson dealers, or European distributor JMV GmbH can help, Wildermuthstrasse 88; D-80993 Munchen; Germany. Tel: 089/48866-0.

RENAULT RETURNS TO 4x4
By Hans-Georg Schmitt

At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1999, Renault presented the Megane Scenic RX4, their first four wheel drive vehicle after a long gap in this growing market. With this cross country version of the Scenic mpv, once more a 4x4 is in Renault's production programme. This Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is available with a 2.0 litre 16 valve petrol engine or 1.9 litre dCi Diesel power. The first 4x4 vehicle made by Renault was the Prairie Colorale in 1951, conceived for use in the French colonies and in agriculture, but only about 28,000 cars were sold between 1952 and 1957. The colonies disappeared and farmers did not like to be marked out in their profession by using a special vehicle. Renault marketing launched a range of accessories for RX4 owners and fans, T-shirts, watches, baseball caps, bags, key-rings and more feature the RX4 logo, and finally a 1:43 model car, made by Universal Hobbies H-K Ltd, the first time for some years that a Renault promo is not made by Vitesse. The model is well finished with many parts and a realistic interior. The wheel rims look like real alloy and the base-plate is well detailed. The RX4 model is available in two colours, 77 11 211 540 grey metallic or 77 11 211 539 reed green metallic, from the Renault Boutique at all Renault dealers.

EUROPEAN MODELS 1:43 handbuilt from Belgium:

Gregoire Sport Coupe in silver and black, with figure of a 'famous lady writer', available August. The popularity of the preced-ing Cabriolet model created a few problems for the makers. 100 were sold immediately, and a second batch of 100 is currently being shipped out to dealers. this has slowed the pace of next releases, making the company quite happy to be a victim of its own success.

TALKLINE LOLA MODEL

Starter have made a special 1:43 resin model for Dutch model car shop Autopassion, the 1999 Lola T98/10 Le Mans number 26 (artist's impression left). The car was driven by an all-Dutch team, ex Le Mans winner Jan Lammers, 1999 Nippon champion Tom Coronel and BTCC Honda driver Peter Kox. The model costs £42.50 GB Pounds, in a limited series of 350, and is available from Autopassion, Koudenhorn 46, 2011 JD Haarlem, The Netherlands, tel 0031 2353 24329 or email: autopassion@wxs.nl

NEW RANGE FROM OPEL
By Hans-Georg Schmitt

For some years Opel have been in the habit of releasing models to coincide with the launch of new cars. Proud early owners can thus have an example of their new car on their desks. These models were then marketed by General Motors Europe throughout the life of the real car. To mark Opel's 100th Anniversary in 1999 they launched a 1:43 model of their first car, the 1899 Lutzmann by Vitesse. This prompted the idea for a model car range to include notable Opels from the past. The Opel Car Collection was born. This new range will run initially for five years, and in each year two 1:43 cars will be released, probably around Easter and Christmas. The outer box design looks like corrugated iron, with a clear case inside, in which the model will be fixed, but 'in a different position from other ranges'. Each model will be limited to 10,000 made, sold by Opel dealers, mostly in Europe. Only Opels will be made, not Vauxhalls. The Opel Manta A sports coupe 1970-75 was planned as the first release for Easter 2000, made by Schuco, but the launch was delayed until August, due to technical problems. This car will no doubt be in demand in the USA as well as Europe, as it and the Ascona A were the last Opels regularly imported and sold by Buick dealers. The second issue, for Christmas, will be the impressive Opel Diplomat B saloon 1969-77, so collectors will have to reserve space among the Easter eggs and under the Christmas tree every year.

BERLIN BLACK BEAUTIES
By Hans-Georg Schmitt

A new company from Berlin, Black Beauty Model Cars offers limited edition promotional models, exclusive model cars in special presentation cases. The models are always painted matt black, the first a 1:18 Ferrari 360 Modena by Bburago. The model is completely dismantled, then painted in matt black and printed to customers requirements, in the example pictured here for efectmetal SA. It is then re- assembled and fixed on the silver painted baseplate of the showcase. The seats look a bit too glossy, painting would improve the appearance. This Ferrari is the first of what is hoped to be many orders, the basic model chosen by the client. Black Beauty Model Cars; Kiesstrasse 10; D-12209 Berlin; Germany. THE POWER OF C
By Hans-Georg Schmitt

The Power of C is the title of the presentation video for the new Mercedes-Benz C-Class saloon, launched in May 2000. It was presented to the world's motoring journalists at Frankfurt/Main and in the Hessia Parc, an open air museum in the Taunus hills. After four years development and investment of 2.7 billion DM, the third C-Class was revealed. It is available in three versions, Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde, the body following the S-Class, some journalists describing it as an S-Class which shrunk in the wash. The new car is also available in small scales, for model car collectors, for children or for those who want to a model of their real car. Officially licensed models are in 1:160, 1:87 and 1:43 scales. The last was ordered from Schuco, but was not available in a big enough quantity as ordered. The 1:160 version can be ordered as pin badge, in 994 amethyst-violet (DC order no B6 696 3103). In 1:87 it is available as Elegance or Avantgarde, with the exact differences in the bodies, requiring two different moulds. The Avantgarde version is 744 brilliant silver, the Elegance in magma red 586. The 1:160 and 1:87 models are by Busch, finished to a very high level. The 1:87 models can be ordered from DaimlerChrysler dealers, order no B6 696 0611.
