INCREASED INTEREST?

Not too surprisingly, most reports we received from the 2009 Trade Toy Fairs told us that trade was ‘quiet’. Rumours were rife of companies in trouble, but unless official announcements have been made (such as the problems at Märklin) we will not repeat any of those rumours here.

The published plans of most of the well-known ranges show a degree of buoyancy and optimism which we hope is well-founded. You can read here our first notes of these interesting plans. A number of collectors have told me that not only are they not slowing down their buying; if anything they are spending more, as their money is earning no interest in the bank. So, lack of interest may lead to increased interest...

AUTO REVIEW: STANDARD

The latest Auto Review book is now available, on Standard. This now unfashionable and neglected marque has an interesting history, populated by such characters as Maudslay, Friswell, Black, Ferguson and Alick Dick. Now for the latest appeal for material I can include in future Auto Review books: future titles include Sunbeam (plus Talbot), British tractors and traction engines, Armstrong-Siddeley, British coachbuilding companies, Alvis, Aston Martin, Lagonda, Hillman, Singer, aviatrices (famous lady pilots), and many other subjects. If you have any illustrations (advertisements, brochures, your own photographs etc) or any personal anecdotes you can offer, please send them to me as soon as possible for inclusion in these publications.

More News From The Marsh
By John Simons

At Marsh Models we have released two new models on our theme of cars that raced in America in the 1950s. MM190 is the 1956 AC Ace of Bob Oker, pictured on the front cover. MM191 is a supercharged Lister Chevrolet raced in 1958 by Indy winner Jim Rathmann. This is probably the same car as used by Jim Hall the following year. We are now working on the protobuild of MM178 Jaguar XJR-5 from Le Mans in 1984. Following the success of our Ferrari P4, we will shortly get the decals to make the coupes from Daytona, Spa and Monza. Work is progressing on the P4 spyder. We have new models coming out thick and fast; we have test castings and decals for the NART Watkins Glen Ferrari 512M; has this version ever been made before? We now have the patterns for the Krause Jaguar D-Type and Pollack Lister with the casting company. Information for the decals for the Penske RS Spyder (we decided to do this version first, as it is easier to make changes for the two Le Mans versions) and the later version of the Ford G7A, without the wing, have been sent to the decal designer.

K&R REPLICAS ESTATE CARS
By Stephen Roff

Very soon we will have the following 1:43 kits available: KR153 Austin Cambridge A55 Mk2 Countryman and KR154 Morris Oxford Series V Traveller. We are having the MGA Coupe updated to include etched grilles etc, and there will be a host of race and rally cars coming over the next few months, which will be noted in future issues of Model Auto Review as they are released.

MINICHAMPS 1:43 diecast in China for Germany: 400 138600 Mini 850 Mk I 1960, nicely finished in white with a red interior, limited to 3,216 pieces, and 400 036300 Smart Fortwo Coupe 2007. The Smart is helping Daimler AG to balance their books these days. This tiny excellently detailed model is finished in black, in a limited edition of 1,536 pieces, above right. Book Reviews

Trax Models; the 1986-2008 Edition ‘The Journey Continues’ by Robert Hill. Published by Top Gear in Australia. 180 x 260mm hardbound, 280 pages, profusely illustrated. AU$34.95 direct from Top Gear on 1800 635 508 (Australia) or at www.topgear.com.au
Robert Hill is not just the creator of Trax diecast models, he is their chronicler as well. Here in this updated edition you will find everything you need to know about Trax models. 30 pages of colour plates detail every model and colour variation produced by Trax since 1986. The models replicate Holdens from 1948 to the 1990s, plus Australian Ford cars, as well as buses and commercial vehicles seen in Australia (in the 1:76 Trux range). You’ll also find details of the Australian Chrysler Valiant and Leyland P76, the latter model taking ages to sell out. Robert’s subtitle ‘The Journey Continues’ reminds me of the slogans Lyndon Davies adds to each of his Oxford Diecast catalogues. This book was originally produced in 1997, but such a wealth of information has been added that the new edition will be an essential work of reference for all Trax fans. Rod Ward

Argus Illustré CORGI HERITAGE. SAFAM, BP 40, 78230 Le Pecq, France. 210 x 297mm softbound. 52 pages. 490 colour photos €26, Europe €27
The latest Argus de la Miniature illustrated listing of toy and model marques covers the ‘Heritage’ range of diecast models made by Corgi for the French market. Fire vehicles, military vehicles, ambulances, Michelin, circus, abnormal loads and many publicity vehicles, including those for the Tour de France cycle races, are all listed here. This will be helpful to Corgi collectors outside France, who have not only found certain Heritage models hard to find, it has also been hard to get information on them. The rise in the value of the Euro unfortunately makes this useful 52 page A4 softbound publication cost around £25.00. Rod Ward

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod Ward

Sue Leake, editor of Wheel Nuts, the South Hants Model Auto Club publication, has had a deluge of contributions from members, after her ‘tirade’ over getting no articles. Well, that seemed to work; is it a hint to other editors? Keith Allen, editor of Showcase, the West Australian Model Collectors Club magazine, is also struggling for contributions, plus hearing of complaints about the type size he uses. He suggested that any complainers should put up or shut up, in effect. No-one spoke up, so the type size stays the same. Good on yer, Keith. Cliff Maddock, editor of the Maidenhead Static Model Club news-letter, Wheel Bearings, has been trying to resign for a while. Now that there is a volunteer to do Cliff’s ‘other’ job (publicity), he is prepared to stay on as editor for another year, but no later than March 2010. Wheelspin, the magazine of the Coventry Diecast Model Club, is edited by Mick (Mixxy) Russell, who also wants to hand on the baton as soon as possible. His will be a hard act to follow; he always somehow managed to fill every issue. At least Barry Lloyd, editor of Wessex Smalltalk, the newsletter of the Wessex Model and Toy Collectors seems to be happy to stay in post. That is a blessing for all who admire his amusing writing style. He recently wrote about Tornado, the brand-new A1 Peppercorn loco built at a cost of £3m. He’ll be envious to know that I saw its first test run, pulling just one carriage, steaming along the railway line next to our village; only a hundred yards from where I am writing this.
