LOTS NEW FOR 2007

We have lots more news of forthcoming releases in this issue, much of it from the 2007 Toy Fair season. I have spread the news and pictures throughout the magazine, rather than presenting it in one big indigestible dollop.

WESTERN MODELS CLOSE

I can now officially reveal what a lot of collectors already know; Western Models will close this summer, when Joyce and Mike take their deserved retirement. The Western 1:200 airliner range has already been sold, but offers are still invited for the 1:43 car ranges, preferably as one lot, rather than piecemeal.

This could be your last chance to get that Western model you always postponed buying.

THE MYSTERY OF CORGI

As we go to print I hear of unusual events at Corgi in Leicester,. Their two top managers are apparently on ‘gardening leave’. Much of Corgi’s inventory received up to the end of 2006 has been dumped at increasingly deeper discounts on to the market. There are extensive deletions from their 2007 plans (see pages 38 and 39 for more details), and nothing had been delivered from the 2007 catalogue from China by early March. I have been unable to clarify the forward plans of the new US-based Corgi International firm, but if they want to retain the support of collectors and the trade for their future diecast products, then dumping their existing stock at dirt cheap prices would not seem to be the way to go.

THE JUNK MAN DISPOSES

I have often been asked the amazed question. ‘Just how many models does Don Elliott actually have?’ after reading the dozens of articles ‘The Junk Man’ has written for MAR down the years, all based on items from his own collection. Now Don has decided to dispose of much of his enormous collection. See page 48 for the web address. and remember, he lives in Missouri, USA, so you can’t just pop round to have a look at what he has left...

NOW NO CAD-CAM DATA?

Following my comments in the MAR 210 Editorial about the preference for Cad-Cam computer data rather than sculptor-pattern makers among model companies, I was amused by a phone call I subsequently received. A model firm, commissioned to make a model of a 2007 season racing car by one of its main sponsors, contacted the car manufacturer to request the computer data, under the terms of the licensing agreement.

At first they didn’t understand the request, then stated that there wasn’t any data. ‘You’ll have to measure and photograph the real car, it’s constantly being modified’. The manufacturer, somewhat miffed, asked what he had paid the licence fee for. They had no answer...

LET’S MOVE INTO THE SHED

I am told that, perhaps following the lead of Sun Star’s 1:12 Morris Minor, some other firms are thinking of making 1:12 scale models as well. Time to move to a bigger house?

Nuremberg Toy Fair 2007 First Report

By Hans-Georg Schmitt

The Fair has been enlarged, new halls built and exhibitors rearranged, so many were in new halls, making it hard to cover the ground among the crowds. I was often told about problems with enormous rises in cost of raw materials, 250% to 400% in two years, and labour costs in China rising at a similar level. Some firms are looking into production in other countries. Other news is elsewhere in this issue, and more will be in the next MAR issues. Some early notes:

Abrex: have the worldwide licence to make Skoda models, the only model firm concentrating on the products of one car firm. 2007 will see WRC cars, Skoda Scout and the Joyster concept car, plus new Skoda cars for launch this year. Prototypes of four Praga trucks were also on display.

adp Models: New items on display: 16137 Sachsenring P240 saloon second version, 16149 Horch 930S saloon 1939, the streamlined design continued after the war by DKW in West and by IFA in East Germany, 11616 Lada Niva 1990 Polizei East Germany, 22010 KR51 Schwalbe (Swallow) scooter in 1:225 scale. Schaefer Collection: Kirov molten iron transporter, Wartburg 311 estate civil and post, GMC army trucks. They also displayed 1:87 models by Tololoko from Poland and also some 1:43 models by Tin Wizard, including the Sachsenring P240. Herr Schaefer is also distributing 1:87 kits by Dahlmann including Ford 3500 trucks.

Bburago: back in business, now based in Hong Kong. The programme is mostly of old models, but with some new items from other companies, such the Citroen C6, which has also been made by Norev. Bburago has a range of tuned models with bright chromed wheels, painted in bright colours. An exchange of moulds between Maisto and Bburago means that the Lamborghini Murcielago roadster by Maisto, is now available from Bburago.

Brami Scale models: Had an impressive 1:50 model of a Terex-O&K excavator.

Brekina: new Opel Rekord saloon 1953, some Porsche versions and the ex-DDR ADK Autodrehkran. The Opel Kadett 1962 and the NSU Fiat 1100, made by Drummer will also be distributed by Brekina.

Busch: 1:87 Mercedes-Benz new C-class in Avantgarde or Elegance versions, new GL and R class, new Smart coupe and cabriolet 2007. Also some new fire and police vehicles. A new 1:87 range, by Masterpiece Automotive Replicas: Austro-Daimler 18/32 Cabriolet 1914 open and closed and Austro-Daimler 28/35 saloon 1908. In 2007 will come the A-D 8/16 1911 Austrian emperor and A-D 6/17 Cabriolet 1923. CMC: Their 1:18 Bugatti T35 is almost ready. The prototype looked very accurate.

Epoche: This firm is still uninterested in publicity outside Germany... Fine Art Models: This time no Bugattis were on display, just a GMC military truck in around 1:8, made from sheet brass.

Igra: This Czech firm, formerly distributed by Rietze, did not stand at Nuremberg.

Ixo: Their models of East German cars and some classic cars are also available more cheaply from Altaya. They displayed a full-size Mercedes-Benz 300S Cabriolet

Veit Kornberger: Sales trailers: 08700114 Strawberries, 08700113 Hamburgers.

Märklin: Latest replica is a large scale streamlined saloon, price in Germany €499

4MFOR Metal Military Mission by Märklin: a new range of 1:87 and 1:32 militaria

Maisto: New releases mainly 1:18 and 1:24. Many re-issues in tuned version: wide tyres, chromed wheels, and bright colours.

Mattel: The same Hot Wheels were on display as on the separate HW stand. Eight Ferraris will be released for the 60th anniv-ersary of the marque in 2007, four liveried as the real Ferraris in the anniversary rally.

Minichamps: Many new items announced. The most impressive is a 1:18 Bentley Blue Train (see front cover). Minichamps is distributing Kyosho and Yat Ming in Germany.

Model Power Minis: 1:87 models, sold in Germany under the Schuco brand name.

Neo Scale Models: A new range of resin models; a 1:43 Saab 95 looked quite good.

A VW Scirocco Mk II and others for future.

New Ray: Now aiming for a higher profile in Germany. After founding subsidiaries in Italy and France, now New Ray GmbH is in Pirmasens, in south-west Germany. Their manager Herr Werner worked for Bburago and Speedy. New at the fair a full-size and 1:12 scale Lambretta 125D were shown.

Norev: Eye-catching full size Audi R10 and Chrysler 300C Parotech were on display. Norev have bought the old CIJ brand name, for a range of nostalgic miniatures. The old moulds are damaged, so most of them will have to be made anew.

Revell: New 1:18 diecast cars include 1970 Triumph Stag, 1963 Volvo PV544 race version, 1961 DKW Junior saloon and VW Scirocco Mk I. In 1:24 a Cadillac Escalade 2003 and Dodge Magnum RT in 1:25, both in tuned versions with wide tyres and high gloss chromed wheels, in bright colours.

Ricko: Due to rising costs, Ricko will retire from 1:18 in the long term. Their 1:87 models were much better presented than 1:18, which were down-played, including their Austin 7 De Luxe saloon 1932. Rietze: New 1:87 VW T5 Transporter, Ford Transit 2006, fire, buses and camper. 1:160 releases: Neoplan Starliner 2 and MAN Lion’s City double decker BVG Berlin.

Solido: I met a Solido sales manager who was not amused to see news of Norev and Minichamps models in MAR, but not of Solido. I hope to get their news in future.

Spark: An eye-catching item on their stand was the Ecurie Ecosse racing car transporter 1959, which Corgi made years ago.

Starline models: Interesting plans for 1:43 Italian models and German DKW Munga 1954 designed for the German Bundeswehr and some 1:24 Italian motorcycles.

Sun Star: Display centre pieces were the 1:12 Morris Minor saloon and cabriolet, both excellently detailed and 1:24 AEC Regent bus London Transport. Out later will be a 1:12 Volkswagen Samba microbus and 1:18 1955 Pontiac Star Chief, 1956 Lincoln Premiere Hard Top, 1958 Lincoln Mk III open convertible, 1958 Buick Limited Riviera Coupe, Citroen DS19 open convertible, Fiat 124 AS Spider. Vitesse-Quartzo have some new items and colour variants.

Universal Hobbies: The model cars on display were mostly from last year. The only catalogue was of their Farming Line.

Weinert Modellbau: New items for 2007: 4585 Lanz tractor with front loader 1955-56, 4586 Heavy duty modular 16 wheel trailer, 4587 additional 8 wheel trailer module,

4588 Kaelble K832 three-axle heavy tractor, 4589 Goliath Rapid three wheeler.

Wiking: A new item is the first motorised remote control bus in the Wiking range, using the same technology as Siku. Also new is a 1:43 metal Rosenbauer airport fire appliance. A book about Wiking, their founder and the models will be out soon.

World Tanks Collection - World War Ruins Collection: A range of 1:87 tanks, from the First and the Second World War, and current afvs, quite well detailed. The hull and turret are metal, the chassis and tracks are resin. Plus ruined buildings made of cork, for authentic backgrounds.

Yat Ming: As well as road cars, a wide range of hot rods are new in the range.

OBITUARY
William (Bill) Harrison

A truly iconic figure in toy and model collecting, Bill passed away at the age of 78 on 3 January 2007 after complications from a stroke. A subscriber to MAR since its inception, Bill was born in Chicago in October 1928 and raised in Missouri. He served in the US Navy between the Second World War and the Korean War, then settled in Los Angeles and attended art school. Later Bill moved to northern California and worked for many years as a technical illustrator for Lockheed Missile and Space Corporation, retiring in the early 1990s. Bill’s interest in miniature cars and trucks was all consuming for well over half a century. His collection is conservatively estimated at 15,000 items; when it outgrew his small two bedroom house, he added a wing. Over the years Bill collected almost anything with wheels that was less than 1:1 scale. He had cars as large as three feet long, as small as a matchbox and everything in between, although 1:43 scale was a perennial favourite. Price was never a deterrent to Bill. If it was something he wanted, he got it, often in multiples, to subject to his exceptional skill in custom modelling and chopping. A craftsman par excellence, he always had at least 25 projects at various stages. Latterly he was particularly fond of Fords from the 1930s and 1940s and he created 1:43 models of just about every Ford version from those decades. Bill never refused a tour of his collection, though he sadly did not photograph and document his prolific modelling output. I will greatly miss Bill; for me and many other friends he was the master; a mentor in the skills of model building and chopping. He was equally skilled working with plastic, diecast, resin or white metal and he had an artist’s eye. He taught me many tricks that he had perfected over the years. He not only collected toys and models; he had an astounding collection of books and reference materials, vital to his work. If there is any truth to the saying who dies with the most toys wins, he gets the prize. Rest in peace, Bill, you’ll be missed. John F.Quilter

A NOTE from the Editor: Many years ago Australian collector Ian Cummins was flying to the UK. Stopping over in San Francisco, he visited a club meet and was introduced to Bill. Ian said that he was leaving the next day, and would visit Modelauto when in the UK. Bill commented that he would have liked to visit us as well, but nothing further was said.

The next day Ian found that not only was Bill on the same aircraft, they had adjacent seats, and then they turned up in Leeds together...

MARSH MODELS UPDATE

By John Simons

We have some exciting news about a new handbuilt range we are about to launch that will be our equivalent of BBR’s Gasoline series. The new range, to be sold under the Velocity title, will begin with a series of Greenwood Corvettes, many of which have never been modelled before in 1:43 scale. The first, 1974 Old Blue will be available in April 2007. In the meantime we have, at last, released MM24M 1967 Dan Gurney Lola T70 Mk III from Bridgehampton.

The MM153 Audi R10 pattern has now been finalised and we will also be doing the 2006 Sebring versions. Chris Sargent’s next job for us will be the Shadow DN3 while I make the changes to the DN1 to make the Jarier 74 car. We need some help on future ideas, so we are looking for good pictures of US-raced Listers, the Graeme Laurence McLaren M12 Spirit of Edmonton and the Mecom Hussein. Some detailed shots of the Hobbs Lola T310, cockpit and rear would also be helpful.

On a different note, I have just finished my third chemo and seem to be doing OK. All my hair has now gone and my daughters think I look like a tired Jean-Luc Picard from Star Trek!

CLASSIX 1:76 TRUCKS

The Classix range of 1:76 diecast trucks produced by UK wholesaler Pocketbond has only two cabs, Ford Thames ET6 and Austin K2 (and three bodies (flat, dropside and box van). The chassis appears to have slightly too long a wheelbase on all variants, giving the appearance of an over-large space between the two axles and not enough rear overhang. For 2007 tilts or loads have been added to the open trucks; sacks, bricks, crates etc, for model railway layouts.

EMHAR 1:24 BEDFORD O TRUCKS

As well as their Classix range of 1:76 diecast trucks, Pocketbond makes and distributes plastic kits. For 2007 release in their Emhar range they have a 1:24 plastic kit of a Bedford O series truck, in long wheelbase dropside form or as a short wheelbase tipper. Each kit has 250 parts and rubber tyres.

ANOTHER POCKET CATALOGUE

J&M Classics have produced a little catalogue for their new Daimler range, in which the original cars are described and pictured: Conquest saloon, Conquest drophead, Conquest Century and Conquest Roadster. The catalogue will be supplied in the boxes with the models as they are released. Another welcome return to the little things that used to be important to collectors, this little catalogue will undoubtedly aid sales.

COMMENTS FROM OUR REGULAR CONTRIBUTORS

Hans-Georg Schmitt on ‘Freebies’
Re the complaint from Ben van Roode: I have had review samples for about 17 years. Some firms never give any, but if I build up trust they send me samples and I send them proof (a voucher copy of MAR) of my work on them. I do not hesitate to mention mistakes or faults if I see them. In the past this has sometimes led to problems, but samples came again later. I once wrote that the firm’s founder would turn in his grave if he could see their products today. And we know that Volkswagen and Audi don’t like MAR. One German model maker (Epoche) never gives news to foreign magazines.

It is important and useful to visit Nuremberg toy fair, where I can meet managers or owners of model car firms. Today everyone has to economise; sending samples only in limited numbers or only by request. One has to stay in contact, to prove that their products are really shown in MAR and commented on in a fair way. Just asking for samples never works!

Yes, I have a ‘collection’ of samples, but on the other hand there is my time taken up. When I get a sample, first I compare it with the original vehicle. It takes time to find the photographs in books and magazines from my archives, then I take photographs, write my article, import the photographs and burn a CD to send to Rod. I send the voucher copies to every sample supplier, costing me around 50 Euros every issue. I am sometimes told that I am one of the few who does this! I think only personal contacts will get information and samples, not complaining in a magazine.

Maz Woolley on an interesting year
As suggested in recent Editorials, 2007 will really be an ‘interesting year’. As spending on models falls, common sense might suggest caution from model firms, yet some hugely ambitious programmes have been announced, some adding ranges in scales hitherto ignored, and entirely new players still enter the market. Evidence that not all is rosy is easy to come by. Corgi are clearing all their inventory at heavily reduced prices. In the US many ranges are appearing at bargain prices in Walmart, Target and elsewhere. I hear that RC2 is re-aligning and pulling the plug on many 1:64 ranges from 2007. It appears that most of what they bought from Ertl is being abandoned, other than farm models. Johnny Lightning is said to be repositioning as a toy brand. A model business insider notes that the value of the 1:64 market in the States plunged by over a third in 2006. Despite high volumes, each model sold made less profit. It is suggested that models now selling for under $2 will rise to $3, ‘due to the higher zinc price’. Is this shorthand for Chinese producers clawing back the impact of a falling US Dollar? It is also suggested that Abrex may increase prices in Eastern Europe by up to half, ‘due to increased zinc prices’. Many releases will be delayed or never arrive. I would not be surprised if at least one major player pulls out of the business this year. It will also be tough for small firms; chasing less buyers’ cash while prices rise. I am not too unhappy at the prospect that not all promised models will be made, as I can't afford to buy them all anyway!

Book Reviews

FERRARI: A LEGEND by Sergio Massaro, translated into English by Catherine Frost. 380 pages, 466 photographs, 200 x 200 mm. Hardbound, ISBN 88-09-04583-1. Published by and available from Giunti Editore SpA, Via Bolognese 165, 50139 Florence, or Via Dante 4, 20121 Milan, Italy.

This book tells the story of Enzo Ferrari, of his company, development of all the road cars and racing cars, as well as the cars specially bodied by Vignale, Touring and Pininfarina. Also described are supreme icons in the history of automobile sports such as the Testa Rossa from 1953, and the Formula One racing cars. The lives of the designers, engineers and the most important racing drivers are also revealed. Every Ferrari road car is pictured and described, from the 125S of 1947 to the 599GTB Fiorano and there is a schedule of every Ferrari racing victory. Hans-Georg Schmitt

Vintage Car Wrecks: Motoring Mishaps 1950-79 By Rusty Herlocher 224 pages, 430 photographs. Paperbound 215 x 280 mm. ISBN 0-87349-458-X, Pub: Krause Publications, 700 East Street, Iola. WI 54990-0001, USA.

A fascinating collection of accident photos; 1950s Cadillacs, 1960s Mustangs, 1970s VWs. Some are amusing, most are tragic. The most unusual one is a 1950 Chevrolet Styleline in a toyshop window, next to a Dinky Toy display. Hans-Georg Schmitt

World of Cars 2006/2007: Worldwide car catalogue Pub Warsaw: Media Connection Sp.2.0.0 Nov. 2006, ISSN 1734-2945, £6.95

Browsing the car magazine shelves of my local Sainsbury’s supermarket I came across this publication. It claims 62 countries, 1500 makes, 8500 models, 3000 photographs and is the second edition in this format, an English language development of Samochody Swiata Cars of the World published in Poland since 1991. I can’t really judge if their coverage of Ecuadorean motor manufacturers is accurate; have they missed out any vital players? Nitpicking produces doubts about the indexing; there’s no way to find Smart cars from the index, although they are in there.

I couldn’t find anything about the Nanjing-Rover situation. This might be too recent, but there is no clearly stated cut-off date for new information. Technical data is in separate tables at the back, which is inconvenient, but it alleviates information overcrowding the main part of the work. To be nostalgic, this information density is reminiscent of elderly British reference works like Whitaker’s Almanac. The data includes both length and wheelbase for the benefit of seriously concerned scale-checkers. On the plus side it includes the minor players (kit cars, tuners, specialist body builders etc) and, a nice touch, it lists projected future dates of model launches. Also, the pictures are very good. The Japanese ones, for example, are both amazing and baffling; do they really need so many models that seem to vary so little? It is also quite easy to find out when production of models stopped; most works concentrate mainly on new models and are vague about what happened to the old. It is also fascinating to trace the wide variety of aliases under which various ordinary cars pop up in markets across the world. World of Cars has a website (natch!) at www.theworldofcars.com so I went along to see if they had details about how to get hold of the previous edition. They offer a free download of 2005/2006 in order to show that they aren’t ‘some Eastern European credit-card scam’ and encourage purchase of the current edition. A trifle excessive, I thought, some sample sections would have done, but I’m never averse to something for nowt so I downloaded a 418 page pdf document. The PC coped, just about, but the printer had hysterics, unless printing was limited to 100 pages at a time. In summary; it can’t be beaten in the value for money stakes and has hours of fascination for the hopelessly fact- addicted. Gerald Watkins

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod Ward

Coventry Diecast Model Club:

Pictured here are some contestants in a recent Coventry Diecast Model Club competition. Mick Russell, Editor and Chairman of the CDMC, says ‘I'll let the pictures (by Chris Sweetman) do the talking. The club meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the Midland Air Museum, Baginton, Coventry 7.30 pm all are welcome’. Ring Mick on 0779 9882016 or email cdmc@ntlworld.com

Maidenhead Static Model Club:

Cliff Maddock really seems to be up to speed editing Wheel Bearings, the MSMC organ. He is helped by having too much material to fit into each issue. Maybe the advancing age of members now means they have more time on their hands to write? If you feel able to contribute, contact Membership Secretary Alan Simpson on 01494 813903.

South Hants Model Auto Club:

Trevor Slade went to some lengths to get hold of the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows by Spark that he saw pictured in MAR. He is the only UK collector I know of that managed to get them from Mercedes-Benz in Milton Keynes. He is very pleased with the degree of detail and authentic worn and dented finish, just like the real cars. To see them, you have to join the Club; contact Secretary Dave Painter on 01264 366408.

West Australian Model Collectors Club:

In Showcase, the WAMCC Club publication, edited up to now by Ian Hind, Club Secretary, I read that MICA(the Matchbox International Collectors Association) ceases to publish a print edition of its magazine from April 2007. From now on it will be digital-only, on its website. This is the way most small-run publications are going in future. Iain has now resigned both of his posts, so it remains to be seen if his replacement can produce Showcase to the same standard. To find out you’ll have to join the WAMCC; phone President Martyn Overy on 9310 1790

New Zealand Model Vehicle Club:

Miniature Auto, newsletter of the NZMVC, edited by Ron Ford, now has a colour cover. The contents are as good as ever, as expected from Ron, though there is an odd comment that ‘Oxford Diecast have been released from the constrictions put on them by the Corgi Company (not allowing their product to be wholesaled) and so have plenty of expansion planned for 2007...’
Don’t know where that story came from, but there is no connection between Oxford and Corgi, so no such restriction could apply. For information on joining the NZMVC, contact Eric Brockie on (03) 448 9276 or email austinrk@paradise.net.nz

Sydney Model Auto Club:

In the SMAC official journal Think Small, the coverage of models of Bathurst entrants continues (along with much else) and an astonishing number have been made. It just shows how patriotism can operate in the market place. Not only are there active Australian firms commissioning models of the cars, but also lots of eager buyers wanting a piece of their heritage. It helps of course that most cars were basically road cars modified for racing, thus giving the makers more sales options, but if other markets were as patriotic and supportive, many more models could be made. If you'd like to see the colour pictures of all these models, you'll have to join the SMAC; phone Secretary John Maude 9579 1257

Wessex Model & Toy Collectors:

Barry Lloyd, editor of WMTC newsletter Smalltalk, continues his fun-filled efforts quoting Lancashire member and MAR subscriber David Swales: a little old lady was running up and down the corridor of the old folks home with her nightie over her head shouting 'Supersex!' An elderly resident thought for a moment then replied, 'I'll take the soup'. If you have any jokes to contribute contact membership secretary Doug Male on 01225 755043

MORE MILITARIA

By Robin Godwin

Further to my Military Models Today article in MAR 209, here are some updates:

Dragon 1:72: Dragon has removed the words diecast model from the box of the latest model I have (60251 Firefly Vc). So I guess this confirms the suspicion that there isn’t much, if any, metal to be found in the newer models.

New Millennium Toys: The six 1:144 scale tanks are now sold as 21st Century Toys. I cannot confirm, but it may be that 21st Century Toys made these for Wal-Mart who sold them as New Millennium (hence the apparent name connection), or 21st Century took over the moulds from New Millennium.

21st Century Toys: I didn't write specifically about these models in the original article, but now that they have the 1:144 model connection to New Millennium, what about the rest of the 1:43 and 1:48 models that appeared in the New Millenium range? No sign, but 21st Century will be releasing a new range of Classic Armour Military Vehicles 1:48 scale tanks, commencing with a couple of German WWII tanks, plus an anti-aircraft tracked vehicle. Initial indications are that they will be inexpensive, but may also be all-plastic.

Hobby Master: will introduce a range of 1:72 diecast tanks spread over four eras: WWI, WWII, Vietnam, and the modern era.

Altaya/Ixo: The launch of the 1:72 tanks under the Ixo brand (that Ixo is currently producing for the Altaya partworks), is rumoured to have been delayed until 2008.
With the military market as saturated as it is, I'm sure that there will be many more changes over the next year.

Solido: A rumour circulating on the web is that Solido will cease production of military models in 2007. Maybe Bertrand Azéma can confirm or deny this?

Note: On a different subject, the Hot Wheels Customs Classics 1959 Chevrolet Impala pictured on page 36 of MAR 210.36 is first and foremost a toy. lt is not 1:43 scale. If one wanted to guess, it would be around 1:50 to 1:55. The same applies to the Cadillac, also pictured.
