by Rod WardLOTS MORE NEWS, BUT ...
This issue sees more of our coverage of new models for 2006, released into difficult market conditions which have seen a number of well-respected companies fail in the past year. Much of the information has been gleaned for us by various correspondents, not least Hans-Georg, staggering round the Nuremberg Toy Fair weighed down by 46 kg of brochures from the press centre and loaded on to him by helpful exhibitors. A lot of data is also sent to me direct from manufacturers and distributors, who are pleased with any free publicity they can get. Imagine my surprise, therefore, when a German firm demanded payment in cash from me for the slim envelope of information they had sent. They apologised when I protested, but nevertheless it doesn't seem like very good PR to me if they want the support of MAR and its readers. Old European businesses must work harder if they expect to compete with new producers in the Far East.
FEATURES STILL WANTED
All the coverage of new releases at this time of year fills more than our usual proportion of pages with news. But please don't let that stop you continuing to send in your contributions of articles, features and pictures. They are all included in MAR eventually, and later this year when there will be less 'news' to publish I will need a wide choice of unpublished articles to prepare well-balanced issues of your favourite magazine.
PERSONAL COLUMN
It's time for a little update on MAR folk. Not that much has happened to me, apart from becoming a 'twirly' last year. For those not up to speed with lingua scousa, this refers to over-sixties with bus passes, which are only valid after the morning rush hour has finished. So they hold up the queue to get on the bus while they ask the driver, 'Can I use my pass, or am I twirly?' (All right, too early).
Hans-Georg Schmitt featured on Auto & Mobil, a programme on his local Rhein-Main television station, with his collection of over 5,000 model cars and a clear view of his front door, complete with house number (known here as an open invitation to burglars).
'Hansi' was seen typing news items for MAR on his computer keyboard, and the presenter even showed a copy of MAR at one stage. Let's hope this leads to a profitable new career as a media personality for Hans-Georg.
Michael Seaword, who many of you will remember left Modelauto to take a university degree in Peace Studies, now has a flourishing career in the fast food industry (Would you like more cheese with that?) and has been a Buddhist for many years. He recently married Mari at Kakogawa City Hall in Japan, but the wedding celebration will be held later.
His wife will be known as Mari Ishioka-Seaword in the UK, where they will live and work, at least for the foreseeable future. I am sure everyone will wish them health, wealth and happiness for their future together.

MORE ON THE NOREV RENAULT KERAX
Described by Hans-Georg SchmittOn page 200.25 we pictured the Norev 518800 Renault Kerax, a 1:43 model diecast in China for France with some plastic components. Here are some additional notes on these robust vehicles, which have excellent mobility and all-terrain capability, easily clearing obstacles, while offering ride quality equal to that of a car. This is why there are so many examples of the Renault Kerax in the Paris-Dakar line-up, either in the race or for team assistance. In addition Renault Trucks have specially commissioned a support vehicle to provide the complete service and maintenance expected by its customers participating in the rally, and this is the vehicle modelled by Norev, as used in the 2004 Paris-Dakar event. It has a 412hp 420 dCi 11 litre diesel engine, and weighs around 18 tons. Its 'global' cabin has external protection bars and front bull bars fitted with additional headlights. Mounted on its high-clearance 4x4 chassis is a trailer to carry the assistance equipment, spares, and spare tyres to carry out its purpose.
NUREMBERG REPORT 2006
By Hans-Georg Schmitt, GermanyHere is my report on my visit to the 2006 Nuremberg Toy Fair. More detailed listings are printed elsewhere in this issue and fuller news will be included in future issues of MAR.
Brumm: Manhattan Project: 1:72 scale models of the first two atomic bombs Fat Man and Little Boy. Full-size replicas were displayed on the Brumm stand. Busch: main new releases are the Mercedes-Benz ML-and R Class, the Opel Kadett, Mercedes-Benz W-123 saloon and BMW 3.5 litre CSL Coupe. Two dioramas were especially interesting, a car dealer's showroom with illuminated PCs on desks, and a police raid on a brothel. 2006 fair model was a 1:87 Mercedes-Benz R class.
EG Edison Giocattoli: An old name for a new range of 1:43 model cars, mostly sports cars. They are also making 1:43 military vehicles, which will be distributed in Germany by Schuco. They gave a nice Fiat 600 van in Edison livery. An old diecast vehicle brand, they turned to toy guns and caps; now they return to model vehicles.
Epoche: they still want no contact with foreign press. Faller: For the 250th Birthday of Mozart, models of his monument in Vienna in various scales. Fine Art: Excellent large scale models including a 1:5 Mercedes-Benz S 1928 at a price of approx. $10,000. Guiloy: Now focusing on 1:6 and 1:10 motorcycles, plus the 1:18 Saturn range, Jupiter 1:24 and Mercury 1:43.
Herpa: Fair models for 2006 were a 1:87 Ford Capri and a 1:1000 Antonov An-124. Highway 61: displayed two 1:16 1960s muscle cars and a pre-production 1:6 1956 Corvette. Jadi Modelcraft: Their 1:18 models look like those also sold in the Revell Metal range. Kovap: New in the Czech tin toy range; a 1:25 clock-work Porsche Diesel Master 419 tractor with trailer.
Le Mans: New 1:32 and 1:24 slot cars; Bugatti T57 Tank LM 37 and 39. More models will appear during the year, but due to problems with competitors, they did not show them at Nuremberg. Maisto: New US pickups and muscle cars; main focus is on custom cars including a VW split window and cabrio. Top 1:18 news: Porsche Cayman. Also new are football buses. Bburago and Polistil signs were on display, but it was unclear what will happen with these brands in future. Märklin: four 1:87 fire appliances, two Büssings and two MANs, none of them made in other ranges. Mattel-Hot Wheels: Hot Wheels models were on display with the real cars and a 1:64 Enzo Ferrari was their fair model. Prototypes of 1:18 Ferrari Superamerica and FXX, plus a 1:12 599 GTB were displayed, but it was forbidden to take photos.
Minichamps: Fair model was an Audi A4 DTM. Model Power: Ford F-100 pickup was their fair model. Motorart: a resin mockup of a 1:25 forklift was on display, their fair model was a silver Volvo EC240B. Norev: celebrates its 60th Anniversary, a real Peugeot 206 CC Parotech was on display, with 1:18 and 1:43 versions, all grey and black. Also seen: Borgward Isabella saloon, coupe, cabrio and estate, VW Iltis Dakar, Hummer H2, Citroen 2cv Ambulance. Peugeot 504 Coupe and Cabrio, prototype Peugeot Tricycle from the 2005 Frankfurt show, and Citroen minivan C airlounge. VW Group 1:18 models: Audi A4 cabriolet, Golf GTi and Eos convertible, out in miniature before the real car, which has problems with its folding roof. Their Toy Fair special model was a Peugeot 907 coupe.
Norscot: New 1:50 Caterpillar models: CAT 994F wheel loader, CAT 793D offroad dumper, CAT 825H soil compactor; CAT 365C excavator; CAT Lexion 590R combine. Luxcar: New is a Bugatti Type 57 Galibier saloon as on display in French National Automobile Museum-Collection Schlumpf. Also planned is a T50 Coupe.
Paya: new taxi for Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon and Berlin. Precision Miniatures: Fast Women: a range of 1:18 scantily dressed women to enliven the showcase. Preiser-Merten: New figures include Pope Benedict XVI in 1:87 and 1:22.5. Toy fair models were the Pope, a nun with a child, and female beach volleyball players.
Progetto-K: New Autobianchi Bianchina saloon and convertible and Fiat 850 Familiare Minibus. Their Toy fair model was a pink open Bianchina convertible. Revell: 1:18 Ford 12M saloon 1962, a good choice by product manager Ulrich Taubert, Goggomobil re-issued for its 50th anniversary, Volvo P1800S, VW 1302 cabriolet, the Volvo 121 Swedish police, Opel Kapitän German police, Mercedes-Benz 180 saloon fire chief car, Spanish Seat 600D, VW Corrado, TVR Cerbera, Wiesmann GT Coupe and BMW M6 Coupe. Revell celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2006, so some special models can be expected during the year. Their Fair model was therefore a VW Beetle with gold bumpers and hub caps. Ricko: Fair model a blue Horch 851 Pullman saloon. Rietze: the first 1:43 scale Rietze model car is a nice Suzuki Swift, first batch made for Suzuki. More Suzukis are planned. Some new Rietze fire engines will have flashing blue lights. Their Czech partner Igra has 1:87 Skoda Octavias, Tatra fire appliances, LIAZ artic trucks, and Saviem trucks Roco: It was hard to find them, because they were listed under their new name Modelleisenbahn GmbH, now owned by a bank, but their new factory belongs to a different bank, so during the year they will have to move again, to another building.
Schuco: Porsche Cayman, Audi Q7, Maybach Exelero (previously only sold by Fulda). 2006 will see a Distler Porsche Police car, 1:18 Lanz Acker-Bulldog, Mercedes Unimog 401 Frogeye. Mercedes-Benz L322 turntable ladder. Their Fair models were a Piccolo Mercedes 300SL W194 coupe and a Mercedes CLK DTM racer. A new Schuco Collectors Club starts on 1 May 2006. Signature: the main new 1:18 model: Mercedes-Benz 770K Cabriolet and some US 1950s cars. Solido-Verem: some interesting new items on display, some still as prototypes, but it was impossible to take photographs on their overcrowded stand.
Spark: 1:43 and (new) 1:24 road cars, such as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class and a range of LM cars. Sun Star: Interesting prototypes: 1:18 Lincoln Premiere 56, Buick Limited 58, Citroen DS19, all of them open convertibles. 1:12 1956 Morris Minor 1000. 1:24 Bedford OB coach and open top RM bus London Sightseeing. Vitesse: new 1:43 models: Ford Escort Mk II Ghia, Lancia Delta HF Integrale, Audi Quattro Coupe, Hino Contessa and the Mitsubishi Colt three door. Motor City Classics: New is a 1:24 Greyhound Scenicruiser bus. On display were 'distressed' 1949 Ford Woody Wagon and Ford Model A Tudor. Motor City's Zamboni 500 Series: Ice resurfing machines, printed with the logos of ice hockey clubs. Wiking: In 2006, Wiking will have a Rosenbauer Panther 6x6 airport fire appliance, Eicher king-tiger and Ferguson grey Fergie tractors, Kaelble double-cab heavy tractor and Scheuerle six axle trailer.Yat Ming: New 1:18 range of Hot Rods, more 1:24 Presidential cars and 1:18 US street cruisers.
ALTERNATIVE NUREMBERG VIEW
By Ben van Roode, Netherlands...And this is my report on Nuremberg 2006.
The general feeling at Nuremburg was optimistic this year, despite the demise of Bang, announced shortly before the doors opened. There were as many new items as ever, Minichamps has about 360 for 2006, including colour variations. There are 12 big halls full of toys, two of them dedicated to model cars. But this does not mean that you can limit your trekking. Some companies have a stand in one of the other ten halls. But MAR writers are dedicated and spare no effort to inform you.
Brumm had a different model, a scale version of Little Boy, the bomb dropped on Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. Where is the other atomic bomb, Fat Man? Be patient, Brumm will drop that one too, as a scale model. Rio Tattarletti's motives are noble in making these, I am told; to make a stand against all war. Ixo is expanding fast, with ten different ranges. There are 114 modern rally cars, to increase by 18 this year. The 1:43 Museum series has a 1930 Delage D120 Letourneur & Marchand, the 1938 Talbot Lago Figoni & Falaschi and 1938 Delahaye 165 also by Figoni are very well made. Another interesting new item is the 2005 Aston DB7 Zagato. Visiting this Fair can be educational. I did not know there was a Look Smart Japan, under the wing of Make Up Co. Look Smart changed its name to Eidolon. The Japanese-English in the brochure spells it Eidoron. The Greek word was used by Plato, the philosopher, to mean ideal shape. I like Dragon Models. They have a wide range of plastic kits and their 1:72 diecast armour range is very nice. There is a trend towards smaller models in 1:64, 1:72 and 1:87 scales. Eligor have added a few 1:87 trucks to their range. Models not on general sale include a 1938 Kenworth race truck, made for distribution by Kenworth. I talked again to Paul Lang, CEO of Minichamps. In regard to model price rises, I asked if there was a limit to prices. He thinks there are no limits, because collectors will continue to pay for quality items. He also said that the price differential between budget and more expensive models will grow, as labour costs go up, even in China, and prices for commodities like zinc are up 20%. I saw a 1:18 model of the Mercedes R class in the 'budget' range and it looked very good. The Minichamps 2006 catalogue has 250 pages. For the record, the hardbound version is limited to 250 copies.
Simba-Dickie Group, the third largest toy company in the world, revived the Schuco brand in a big way. Markus Hirsch, PR officer, described their philosophy, this time not quoting Plato. The 1953 Claas combine harvester is a very intricate model. A 1:18 Mercedes truck is in preparation, to be followed later this year by a 1:18 Mercedes L322 with Metz turntable ladder. Fulda built the Excelero coupe on a Maybach chassis. The 1:43 model by Schuco was sold by Fulda on the web. From now on Schuco will sell it, in 1:43 and 1:87 scales. As the real car is almost six metres (20 feet) long the model is big too. When I leaf through the 872 pages of the Hong Kong Toys catalogue I see crossovers of brands and models, making it hard for future historians to write complete stories. Also apparent is the use of radio control (such as a 1:43 Mercedes convertible with full functions including a working steel roof) and Tunerz as pioneered by Jada Toys. A positive thought is that it might inspire younger collectors to start collecting.
I also met the crew of MiniCarFan, a Japanese magazine. Four men and a woman were flown in; it must be big business over there. I gave them a copy of the book I wrote last year; I hope to exchange news and information with them and hope that MAR will profit from this new relationship. I saw their special issue on Nissan model cars and the mag looks spectacular. Mainly for Japanese readers or those who like pictures, because it is, you guessed it, in Japanese. I met Martina Navratilova (!) and the rest of the team at Abrex, a large importer and distributor of toys in the Czech Republic; Hongwell makes Skoda models for them. Their distribution is interesting. They have a 'man and van' system which visits shops where dealers can choose and get merchandise right away. Ros is an Italian firm making agricultural equipment, 1:43 Iveco vans and a refuse truck. In 2006 there will be new Iveco models. Look at www.aweco.net. Siku are introducing 1:50 scale for some trucks and buses.
The Rosenbauer airport fire engine is ultra-modern and looks nice. This year they promise a 1:32 radio control Lanz Eil Bulldog with farm implements which you can manipulate from a distance, but the models still look accurate. This is innovative. Highway 61 makes quality models at around 70 euros Holland). They showed a 1:8 scale 58 or 59 Corvette but with no idea if it will be made, ever. Making a trip to the model railway hall I found an interesting item at Faller; a drive-in cinema with working screen to play dvds or watch television. It was Motorart's first time at the Toy Fair with their own stand, of models released by Volvo, made by Hongwell in low budget and more expensive versions. Only Volvos of course. They had no catalogue but handed out an USB stick. Plug it in and you are connected to their website. Solido will release a 1:18 Alpine Renault A110. Why? One asks. More exciting is the 2005 Le Mans Aston Martin or a 1954 Peugeot 203 break. And the 1:18 motorbikes with rider are more fun. BUB is an NZG brand. Their red Porsche racing car transporter will be followed by a Martini Racing Team version. Also new is a 1:12 Porsche Carrera. La Mini Miniera is a distributor in Italy; Giocher makes a 1:43 Fiat Stilo Carabinieri for them, Brumm make an (Italian) Gangster series and there are dozens of dioramas and sets. Including Mussolini. It was a pleasure to talk to Lyndon Davies of Oxford. He has a long history in diecast, having started working at Mettoy straight from school. Another oldtimer in the trade is Colin Hill, now at Sun Star. There will be a open top RM bus. Totally new is the detailed 1:24 Bedford OB Duple Vista Coach in a 27 or 29 seat configuration. I am a Yat Ming fan. Their choices are often interesting, this year 1:18 1961 Chrysler Imperial convertible, 1961 De Soto Adventurer, 1964 Ford Falcon and 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado. Three new 1:24 fire engines and three Presidential cars. Hot Wheels are always well represented, but they have changed their approach to collectors models. In the entrance to the halls there were two Ferraris on show and there they gave away a special small 80 page catalogue, and even a special Fair model. Motor City Classics will surprise us this year with a camper van, the same vehicle Brooklin has in its range, and their 1:24 Greyhound Scenicruiser (510mm or 20 inches long) is impressive.
PARKER MODELS PLANS
By Maz WoolleyHere are the latest announcements from Parker Models, all 1:76 white metal kits from UK. Unlike many other lists these models are all new castings, they are all available to buy now, and there will be more models released later in the year.
VE36 1957-61 Ford Thames 400E 15cwt 'float'; with flatbed body VE37 1961-68 Morris J4 10/12cwt Van: Classic van seen on every street in Post Office Livery in the 1960s VE38 1952-56 Wolseley 4/44, to go with MG Magnette VE39 1956-61 Nash Metropolitan 1500. It should be popular, but that two-tone paintwork in 1:76 scale; aaargh! VE40 1961-69 Austin A60 Cambridge: about time this was avail able in 1:76 scale, there are not enough old Minix models left.
MORE CHANGES AT AIRFIX
Further to the potted history of Airfix on page 18 of MAR 200, it seems that another chapter has opened in the story of this long-established British brand. From now on the Airfix name and company are under the control of some well-known ex-Corgi personalities, so we may expect to see some dramatic changes this year; not just a continuation of the venerable plastic kits (though they will still have their place) and tinlets of Humbrol paint.

TRAX MODELS 1986-2005. Official guide, third edition. By Robert Hill. 255 pages 170 x 250mm softbound. Pub: Top Gear Pty Ltd, Unit A, 107 Asquith Street, Silverwater NSW 2128 Australia. ISBN 0 9577 6462 6. $34.95 To order: Freecall in Australia 1800 635 508 or via website www.topgear.com.au
Trax Models are now 20 years old, having been started by John Eassie in 1986 in his garage in the Sydney suburb of Ryde, as a railway accessory range. Robert Hill brought his expertise in the diecast model world to Trax in 1992 and has been involved with all new model development since. He has written this guide, updated to cover all 1:43 releases up to the end of 2005, plus Trux trucks and buses, 1:24 models and the new Opal Series. Trax has made models of the 'big four' marques from the Golden Years of Australian Motoring, Holden, Ford, Valiant and Leyland. Each Trax model is described and pictured in colour with production quantities and estimated market values, plus descriptive text on the real car. This book will be a very useful reference work in the future. Few manufacturers take the trouble to document their products while memories are still fresh and records still complete, so Trax are to be congratulated on this publication.

BENTLEY MOTORS 1945-64 by Malcolm Bobbitt (Classic Marques Vol 9). Published by Nostalgia Road, Units 5-8 Chancel Place, Shap Road Industrial Estate, Kendal LA9 6NZ. 52 pages, softbound, 96 mono, 11 colour illustrations. 210 x 200 mm. ISBN 1-90316-60-6. £7.95
The author is a Bentley expert who has extensively interviewed Bentley personnel who designed, tested and marketed the cars. His books include a history of the Crewe factory, two large volumes on Bentley cars from 1965 to the present, and a biography of founder W O Bentley. Even here he doesn't limit himself to the dates on the cover, as he tells the story from the 1920s when the Bentley Boys dominated at Le Mans and Brooklands. When Bentley were in trouble they were almost bought by Napier. Enthusiasts still wonder how that would have worked out. But it was taken over in 1931 by Rolls-Royce and the marque maintained its individual character to a degree. It continued to do so post-war with the launch in 1946 of the Mark VI, 1953's R-Type and John Blatchley's 1955 masterpiece, the S-Type, which remained in production, with changes, until 1965. The most desirable postwar Bentley is the R-Type Continental of 1952. The story of all these cars is clearly told here and nicely illustrated, including pictures of famous owners with their cars and vehicles under construction. This will be a very useful reference work for bentley fans.

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod WardSouth Hants Model Auto Club: Sue and Stu Leake, Editors of the SHMAC newsletter, have now been in post for five years, and the healthy growth of the Club has been in no small part due to their efforts. they note that club nights are no longer 'Boys Own' events, but attract 'entire families' for a social event (how many generations make up an entire family?). This must be the way forward, and should be copied by those clubs who complain of fossilisation and decline. The SHMAC even managed to get 30 revellers to attend the Christmas party. If you want to take your entire family, you'll have to join the club; contact Secretary Dave Painter on 01264 366408.
West Australian Model Collectors Club: Ian Hind, Club Secretary and Editor of Showcase, the WAMCC Club publication, Notes that Trevor Young of Biante Model Cars died in January. Over 15 years, he was a model shop retailer (at Triking), wholesaler and ultimately manufacturer of diecast vehicles. Biante (pronounced B&T for Bev and Trevor) will continue in business, however. More signs of the times are that Dianne's Models of Logan-holme, Queensland is for sale and Pitstop Models in Victoria closed down for a while, though it is thought it will reopen in different premises. A new entrant to the Aussie model field is Icon Models, who it is believed plan to produce large scale models in the fashion of Exoto or GMP. If you want to read Ian's ideas as to who might buy Minichamps from the new, NASCAR-related owners of Action Performance, you'll have to to join the Club, phone 934 9369, or email jhind@iinet.net.au
Sydney Model Auto Club: The SMAC journal Think Small, now A5 size, is improving by leaps and bounds under new Editor Neal Stirton. All he needs now is a regular supply of contributions from members. it could be you; just join the SMAC; first phone Secretary John Maude on 9579 1257.
New Zealand Model Vehicle Club: Ron Ford, editor of Miniature Auto, newsletter of the CMTC, is packing lots into each issue, including almost completing the story of Micro Models. Reviews, news and kit-building tips make up a traditional and satisfying mix, reflecting Ron's long experience in the field. to join the Club, contact Eric Brockie on (03) 448 9276 or email austinrk@paradise.net.nz
Maidenhead Static Model Club: Wheel Bearings Editor Les Duplock tells how Club member Frank Hastings was taken ill whilst they were visiting Nuremberg Toy Fair. A hospital in Frankfurt did an MRI scan and diagnosed a brain tumour, which was immediately operated on. Frank was doing well at time of going to print, and Les says that the £20k cost will, thankfully, be covered by their travel insurance. An instructive tale. To join the MSMC contact Membership Secretary Robbie Bennett on anorack821@yahoo.co.uk.
Wessex Model and Toy Collectors: Barry Lloyd, Editor of WMTC newsletter, Smalltalk, ntes famous deaths; Tony Meehan of the Shadows, rally driver Richard Burns, and Marilyn Monroe. Yes, I know she died some time ago, but Barry notes that if she had lived, she'd be 80 this year, the same age as the Queen. Maybe Oxford will make a van for each of them? Contact WMTC membership sec Doug Male on 01225 755043 to read more.
The Toy Car Collectors Association: Thanks to the generosity of Pete Foss, regular MAR contributor, I have a gift membership to the TCCA. Toy expert Dana Johnson is the TCCA supremo. It began in 1993 as the Majorette Diecast Toy Collectors Association, but Majorette demanded fees, royalties and copyright control. The club then reformed as the North American DTCA, shortened to the DTCA in 1997, renamed the TCCA in 2001. Annual membership costs $29.95 for North America, $49.95 for the rest of the world, and includes a free 60 word classified ad, which would cost $50, and the bi-monthly Toy Car Collector magazine. This is a well-illustrated 36 page 220 x 280mm black and white publication which majors on US models and toys, but includes worldwide news as well.
