HAVE WE SENT YOU A LETTER? Many subscribers to MAR opt for 'automatic renewal' of their subscription when it comes due. This means there will be a seamless flow of issues, to avoid getting withdrawal symptoms. We use the credit card details originally supplied, but these may change. The card may need a new expiry date, or it may have been lost, stolen, or replaced with a different card. So when automatic subs come due, we send out a courtesy letter with the last issue paid for, asking for updated card information. Please respond to this letter straight away with your current card number and expiry date if it has changed. Your subscription renewal may be delayed if you do not reply with updated information.
* If you have not opted for automatic subscription renewal, the last issue paid will arrive on your doormat with a subscription renewal form enclosed.
I know that your first priority is to read MAR, and you put the form aside, intending to deal with it later. But sometimes it gets lost or forgotten, and then you may find that the flow of MAR issues dries up, and after a couple of months you contact us to ask what has happened. then you have to renew your subscription late, and catch up on copies you missed in the meantime.
* So, if you get a letter or a subscription form from us, please read it and act upon it promptly.

OUR PAGE NUMBERS

A couple of readers have asked why I abandoned our old and cherished continuous page numbering system, which made indexing and cross-referencing easier. I did think carefully about it. I was aware that we would soon reach page 9999 and within a year page numbers would have five digits. The old numbering system had a flaw; even if all your copies are bound in order, you still needed to know which issue to look in for a given page number. In future page references will be a decimal code, starting with the issue number, such as 191.03, which uses just as many digits as a 10,000-plus system, but also quickly identifies exactly which issue the page is in.

After all those readers praising the new format in the last issue, I have now had two negative responses, one from Britain, the other overseas. Both still prefer A4, and one of them says 'even if it was at a much higher cover price'.

Hongwell revealed their 1:43 and 1:72 Lotus Europa and Ford Capri early in 2004 but they have been slow to appear on the UK market. The Capri came out in Schuco Junior packs in late 2004, but until recently I had not seen the Europa under any brand. The 1:43 models are excellent value and though not up to the standards of Kyosho or Minichamps they are as good as many expensive ranges.

I think the Europa is better than the Capri, which has not quite caught the front end correctly. As these are toys we have opening doors, not fully framed, with over-large gaps round them. The 1:43 cars now have poseable front wheels which click into three positions; left, right and centre. This feature gave me lots of fun posing models for photos and is not mentioned on the box, so it will be interesting to see if it continues on future releases. The 1:72 versions are both excellent models, and not just toys. Their lack of opening doors answers the main shortcoming of the larger cars and both are beautifully detailed. The rear bumper on my Capri is not straight, but it may only affect my model. The Lotus Driver's Guide website has a comprehensive Europa model listing and it is surprising how many producers made them, considering the low numbers made of the real car. I remember well the contemporary Matchbox and Dinky models and I have the lovely Kyosho model, but I was surprised that others from Tomy to Mercury had made it as well. The Hongwell is not as good as the Kyosho, but better than any contemporary model or most white metal kits (apart from the doors). In smaller scales Matchbox, Corgi and Lone Star all made it in the UK and the small Tomy-Tomica was sold quite widely here in the UK. I believe that the Bellini Piccolino white metal range featured a 1:76 Europa but I have not seen it and models in this range were not usually very fine.

The Hongwell is better than any other small scale model I have seen to date. It is a shame that anti-smoking legislation means that the Europa cannot wear John Player Special or Gold Leaf liveries from racing cars and popular special editions of the road car. Hongwell have done vague approximations of these liveries but with modern tampo printing, they could have produced super replicas. There have been many models of the Series I Ford Capri. When new, Dinky offered it in circa 1:40 scale and also tried it in 1:25 scale. In recent years the 1:43 Detail Cars (the casting now in the Solido range) was better than the Del Prado-Revell-Eagle Legends model. Minichamps models are clearly the best to date, up to their usual high standards. The Hongwell is probably on a par with the Eagle (et al) version apart from the opening doors, but with better detailing. In smaller scale the old Matchbox model was always fairly poor and the Corgi Junior little better. On the web I saw a Playart model which is quite good, apart from monster truck wheels and also a nondescript original Schuco. The 1:87 Wiking was the best small model of the early Capri, even in its original simple form. The Hongwell is at least as good and has a higher level of detailing.

NUREMBERG REPORT
By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Here is my first brief report from the 2005 Nuremberg International Toy Fair, which began as the local trade fair for the Bavarian region, then became the German national toy trade fair and which is now the premier international showcase for the toy and model industries. This is just a swift overview of my visits to hundreds of trade stands in six gigantic halls on behalf of Model Auto Review. More detailed news will be published range by range in future issues of MAR. Many firms were unhelpful, not wanting to discuss their plans, or were just too busy. Please note that future releases mentioned here are for gradual release throughout the year, not immediately available.

ADP: New versions shown of the 1:43 EMW 341/2 were Volkspolizei car and taxi. New 1:87 models include BMW 321, prewar US Ford truck and Chevrolet 3104. Art-Best-Rio: Their toy fair special model was a Rio 1:43 diecast Citroen DS. Bang: Will make 1:43 Ferrari 250 police car.

BBR: 1:43 handbuilt releases will include Maserati Quattroporte and Ferrari Scaglietti and in 1:18 scale the new Enzo. They had on display a prototype of the Ferrari 375MM.

Bburago: The new 1:18 Peugeot 907 was displayed, along with a 1:10 master. New 1:24 models: Lancia Ypsilon and Lamborghini Gallardo. 1:43: Fiat Panda. A new 1:72 range and expansion of the Disney series. Two catalogues; one includes the VW Golf V and Touareg, the other shows them unavailable, presumably a VW licensing issue. Bburago's Polistil subsidiary had its own stand, targeting toys for children, rather than collectors.

Brekina: New 1:87 models; Goggomobil (on its 50th anniversary), Citroen 2cv van, road-rail bus, Mercedes L325 lorry and Krupp Titan (following Wiking's model).

Brumm: New Ferrari 126CK F1 1981, including the car in which Gilles Villeneuve raced against a Lockheed Starfighter.

Bub-Premium Classixxs-NZG: Bub 1:87: Mercedes L6600 drawbar, Porsche race car transporter and Porsche Carrera 6. Premium 1:43: Porsche race car transporter, Porsche Carrera 6, Mercedes LP911, VW T2a transporter. 1:12: the previously announced big BMW 328 is still not ready for release.

Busch: 1:87 Audi A6 saloon and estate, Toyota J4 Landcruiser 1960, new Mercedes M-class. Busch distribute 1:87 Ricko series in Germany. Cararama: Hongwell's extensive range was shown under their own name, but many of their models will also be available in such ranges as Schuco and Bburago.

CMC: New 1:18 models will be Mercedes Targa Florio 1924 and Maserati 250F 1957. Epoche: The owner of this 1:87 range does not want his models to be reviewed in magazines outside Germany, so presumably he doesn't want to sell them outside Germany either.

Euro-Modell: This elusive 1:87 scale range is now apparently made in Mexico. Fine Art Models: Their large scale Bugatti Royale Binder was on display at $21,000, alongside an unclothed Royale chassis.

Heico: Railway accessories in 1:187 scale, including resin and brass kits for Mercedes LPF 311 Pullman cabover fire appliances. Herpa: 1:87 plans include Mercedes CLS coupe, BMW Z4 soft top, Liebherr LTM 1045/1 fire service crane, Krupp Titan drawbar (the third on the market now), MAN F8 drawbar and in 1:160 scale a Mini Cooper S. There will be a new series of 'youngtimers' (modern classics) called Herpa Magic.

Highway 61: 1:18 Kaiser Manhattan pre-production model on display; looks good. Le Mans Miniatures: New Bugatti T57G Tank in 1:32 and 1:24 scales.

Maisto: Principal new 1:18 items: Mercedes CLS Coupe, Jeep Rescue concept car, Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler 300C 2005, Jeep Grand Cherokee 2005, Chevrolet Corvette Coupe 2005, Lamborghini Murciélago roadster, BMW 645 cabriolet, Dauer EB110, Mercedes new A-Class, Porsche 911 Carrera 2004.

Norev: 1:18: Citroen DS21 and SM prototype models. 1:43: Audi A6 saloon and estate. Plus a new three inch diecast range for youngsters. Paya: This tin toy range showed its Bugatti T35 with Isadora Duncan at the wheel. It is now said that she was actually strangled by her long scarf in an Amilcar rather than a T35.

American Notes from Nuremberg TOY FAIR
By Ben van Roode

Last time I mentioned a rumour that Revell USA would abort plans to make 1:18 diecasts. At Nuremberg they confirmed that they had 12 projects ready, but decided not to pursue them, mainly due to heavy competition in this field. They will continue their 1:24 range. This fits three trends I observed at the Toy Fair. One is to smaller scale models, 1:24, 1:64 and 1:72. Then there are cheaper ranges from Minichamps 1:18, Ixo 1:43 and Herpa in 1:87 scale. The Minichamps will retail for ¤29.95. Read again what Paul Lang said in my interview with him, that they had no plans in this direction. Another trend is to RC or infra-red diecast models. Welly is one of the new players here. Retailers will not be pleased. How about after sales service with these more complex items? The third trend is hopped up fast and furious cars. Jada started the trend, now even Norev is jumping on the bandwagon. Auto Art add a 1969 Corvette and a Ford GT to their range. Yat Ming showed their 1:24 Lincoln 1972 Reagan presidential limo and the 1950 Lincoln Cosmopolitan bubble top; excellent, as are the Lincoln Mark II, 1966 Dodge Charger and 1961 Lincoln four-door convertible. New to me were 2006 Pontiac Solstice and the prototype Chevy Nomad, on which the later Corvette was based, plus a series of 1:18 Indy pace cars. Norev is really expanding its range. I saw 1:43 Chrysler Crossfire, Chrysler 300C 2004 and Cadillac V16 prototype 2003. Maisto's Playerz have big wheels and cool colours; 1:64, 1:24 and 1:18 models on existing castings and some new ones including the new Chrysler 300C which is also in the regular 1:18 series. Other news: Jeep Rescue Concept, Jeep Rubicon Fire, 2001 and 2005 Corvette coupes. In 1:24: 2005 Ford Mustang, 1967 Mustang GR, 1965 Malibu, 1968 Camaro and 2005 Chrysler ME Four Twelve Concept. In Schuco's 1:43 Junior Line the Hummer S2 is new for 2005. Firms like Welly and Motor Max had incredible assortments of planes, bikes, cars in every size; we see only a small part of what they make. Welly plans 1:18 1987 Monte Carlo SS, 1968 Camaro SS 396, 1965 Impala SS 396, 2005 Lincoln Navigator , 1968 Camaro Z28, 1982 Corvette coupe, 1961 Lincoln Continental, 1970 El Camino, 1953 Ford Crestliner, 1986 Mustang, 1970 Mercury Cougar and 19641/2 Mustang. Some will also be available in other scales from Welly. Signature prefer oldies, 1937 Lincoln Touring car, 1941 Packard limo and 1938 Packard. In 1:32 are 1965 Plymouth Savoy, 1955 Packard Caribbean. Also 1921 American La France, 1928 Studebaker, 1941 GMC and 1960 Mack fire trucks.
Notable at Motor Max was a 1:12 Ford GT.

TRAX 1:43 CHRYSLER PACER

Australians recall the early 1970s Chrysler Charger coupe and its Hey Charger! catchphrase. But how many remember Chrysler's original Aussie performance sedan, the Pacer? Trax Models is making 1:43 VF Valiant Pacers with side stripes, hubcaps resembling mag wheels and high-backed tombstone seats. They are available in wild yellow with black trim or wild blue with a brown interior. Both have Pacer 225 decals and the red-accented grille that differentiated the Pacer from other VF Valiant models. See page 33, photo 39. The Trax Pacers cost $37.95 plus p&p from Trax Models only, on Toll Free 1800 635 508 or via www.topgear.com.au

RECENT NOREV RELEASES
By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Norev have released these 1:43 models, some of which have been pictured recently in MAR:

474700 Peugeot 407 Saloon 2004 aluminium grey. The Peugeot 407 has a platform related to the Citroen C5, but with steel suspension instead of hydro-pneumatic. With its wide air intake in the front end, it is claimed to look like a 'poor man's Ferrari'. It comes with a choice of two four cylinder petrol or diesel engines or V6 petrol. The model is very accurate, the interior highly detailed, even to the loudspeakers in the front door linings.

155401 Citroen C4 Coupe 2005. The C4 replaces the Xsara and is based on the Peugeot 307, sharing floorpan, suspension, engine, gearbox, electrics and electronics. The C4 design shows Citroen flair, the opposite of the unobtrusive Xsara. A lane-reading system which warns the driver if he strays from the lane in the road without using indicators. Citroen have designed a perfume with a scent dispenser integrated into the interior. The model car is excellently finished, including the huge glass panel in the roof. It is finished in Scott yellow.

155570 Citroen C5 Break (estate). In a revamp programme Citroen are offering revised C5 saloons and estates. The model is Ganache purple metallic with grey two tone interior with chrome trim and a load cover over the luggage area.

512900 Renault 11 TXE saloon 1983. Based on the Renault 9, five and three door versions of the R11 were introduced in March 1983 at the Geneva motor show. With its dome-like rear window, stylish interior and electronic equipment, it was ahead of its time and was an instant success. In 1986 it was facelifted, before being replaced by the R19 two years later. The model is azure blue, with interior in ivory.

158054 Citroen DS Le Dandy Coupe by Chapron 1960. The DS-based Le Dandy premiered at the 1960 Paris motor show. Its awkward design and unfortunate proportions necessitated modification before the car eventually became a success. The Norev model is of the revised car, in bright yellow, with glossy black roof and light beige interior. An authentic feature is the single-spoke steering wheel.

158201 Citroen GS Camargue coupe. Visitors to the 1972 Geneva Show were the first to see the Bertone-designed coupe version of the GS. A few months later at Le Mans they presented the GS Camargue coupe, also by Bertone. This model is re-worked from the 1972 Norev Jet Car mould, now with doors fixed shut and with better wheels. The main change to the plain baseplate is removal of the engravings Jet Car and Made in France. It is Or de Simiane, gold, with a black and ivory interior.

159100 Citroen XM Saloon 1988. 1988 saw the debut of the XM, on sale in 1989. Bertone designed the body with 360° panoramic views. The hydro-pneumatic suspension was retained, now worked by electronics. Norev's model is amazon green.

570705 Simca 5 Monte Carlo 1938. The Simca 5 was introduced in 1936, soon after the Italian original, the Fiat 500 Topolino. At the time Simca was the Fiat licensee. Norev have now released J E Vernet's Monte Carlo Rally entry from 1938. Under the opening bonnet is a replica of the 569 cc four cylinder engine. The ABS model is black with MC signage.

154545 Citroen H van La Poste. The Citroen H was introduced in 1947 and production only ceased in 1981. The French Post took the HY into service in 1959 and Norev have made the 1969 version. The sliding side door and three part tailgate all open.

845002 Willys Jeep Fire Tarn fire service. Many Jeeps were left behind in Europe by the Allied forces and were adopted for civilian use. Hotchkiss continued production in France after the war under licence, many with reconditioned Willys engines. Many were taken into French public service, including the fire services. 471012 Peugeot 203 1949 Van Miko. Peugeot launched a new line of commercials at the 1949 Paris Motor Show including the popular 203 van, for craftsmen and shopkeepers, with a chromed radiator grille and painted stainless steel bumpers. This is in the livery of Franco-Spanish ice cream maker Miko

158106 Citroen DS Centipede Michelin. This monstrous vehicle based on Citroen DS parts was developed by Michelin engineers to test truck tyres. It had two 250 hp Chevrolet V8 engines; one powered ten outer wheels, the other drove a lorry wheel mounted centrally in the chassis. The two V8 engines can be seen through a window in the rear wall of the model.

MDS Racing of Italy have announced their latest 1:18 handbuilt model, to be released in May, a Ferrari 250 MM 1953. They say, 'In 1953 this Pininfarina-designed two seater Berlinetta succeeded 250S from 1952'.

LOTS MORE VANGUARDS FORDS

Some MAR readers expressed surprise to see Vanguards promise the Ford Escort Mk I as a new 1:43 release this year, though several models of it are already on the market, at various levels of quality. The new Escort will be in dragoon red (May), MP Racing (June) and Suffolk police (June). Also not alone on the market is the Vanguards Ford Transit Mk I, to mark its 40th anniversary, available from March. Vanguards are keen on Fords right now, with a Cortina Mk II in aquatic jade, a Zodiac Mk II in two tone blue and a Popular 100E in sunset red, for release in April.

BUS STOP
THE LATEST NEWS FROM EFE
By Frank Joyce

The new Exclusive First Editions London Guy GS Special bus is in production and we plan to make models of all fleet liveries in which they were painted. Beware of paying high prices for hand painted Code 3 models; if you are prepared to wait, we will be producing all liveries as standard releases.

The next casting into production will be the AEC Renown bus, to be followed by the new trucks, Foden, ERF, AEC and Thames Trader.

To mark the 60th Anniversary of VE Day we are producing a series of models titled War Time Buses, that features buses used during 1939 and 1945. These model buses depict the changes in livery due to the conflict and each comes in a special box that represents the austerity of the time. The series currently consists of six models, which might increase to eight, each produced in a controlled quantity to only just meet predicted demand, so I suggest that you pester your retailer to make sure that an early order is placed with us. See page 29.

'BEST' OOC BUS LIVERIES

Corgi's Original Omnibus Company range of 1:76 diecast buses began in 1994. Corgi has joined forces with one of the biggest names in transport livery design, Ray Stenning of Best Impressions. Ray established Best Impressions over 20 years ago to provide design and marketing services to the transport industry, carrying out rebranding projects for some of the biggest operators including Trent Barton and Stagecoach. The OOC range so far icludes almost 20 models in Stenning liveries. Adrienne Fuller, product manager at Corgi notes, 'Each OOC model is researched extensively before production, so I speak to bus operators regularly to get hold of photo- graphy and livery details. Many operators I spoke to in the early days gave me Ray's name as the man behind the liveries.

Since then I have worked with Ray on many occasions and he continues to supply us with comprehensive drawings and detailed artwork for all of his liveries that feature on Corgi models'. This year's OOC range includes four of Ray's liveries, the first of which is a Plaxton Excalibur in the livery of Oxford Bus Company's Oxford Express.

Best Impressions carried out a complete rebrand of the service in winter 2003-04 including interior furnishing and exterior livery. The second bus is a Plaxton Premiere in the red and white livery of Wilts & Dorset X33 coach service. The company became part of the Go-Ahead Group in August 2003.

Third out is a double deck Wright Eclipse Gemini of Twickenham-based London United who operate the Gemini on the 148 route between Shepherds Bush and Camberwell. The last release is a Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Dart SLF, one of three operated by Arriva Kent & Sussex in green and cream Transweald livery.

2005 is the Chinese Year of the Rooster, marked by a 1:76 Alexander Trident three axle double decker bus in Corgi's Original Omnibus Company range, for April release at around £30.00 retail in the UK.

MINICHAMPS NEW FORD FOCUS

In November 2004 the new Ford Focus appeared in German dealers' showrooms. Not as advanced a design as its predecessor and quite similar in layout, though with the most modern technology. It can look round corners with adaptive lights, the KeyFree system opens the door without a key and drivers can control the audio, navigation system, radio, telephone and air conditioning by voice. The windscreen reflects most sun rays, so the car will not heat up as much as others in summer and the intelligent protection system with a network of sensors activates the air bags before an accident. You can choose between Ambiente, Trend, Sport, Ghia and Titanium four door, two door saloon or estate, the latter called the Turnier again in Germany. There is a choice of four petrol or two diesel engines from 80 to 145 bhp with manual or automatic gearboxes. The new Focus four door saloon is already available in 1:43 scale, nicely made by Minichamps, as pictured in MAR 189, initially in a presentation box with a Ford card outer sleeve in medium blue from Ford dealers.

MINICHAMPS TRANSIT MINIBUS

In December 1965 the new Ford Transit was revealed, a short-bonnet transporter, replacing the FK1000 previously built at the Cologne plant. The new Transit was designed and developed by Ford in the UK, first produced at the Ford plant in Southampton. Later it was also built in the Belgian factory in Genk. Manufacturing quality and finish were not good. Transits were seen as noisy tin boxes, prone to electrical and exhaust problems. Primitive suspension led to poor roadholding. Other annoying faults were inadequate wing mirrors and a dribbling fuel filler. The 1:43 Minichamps model is shaped accurately, with Cologne registration. The interior includes the now-unacceptable grab bars on the seat backs. The baseplate shows the cheap suspension, two rigid axles on leaf springs, better than nothing (just), and the tank between the axles. In dark green with ivory interior, 400 082210 Ford Transit minibus 1965 is limited to 2,544 pieces and was pictured in MAR 190.

BOOK REVIEWS

UNITED COUNTIES: by John Banks, Prestige series 28: 170 x 240mm softbound, 64 pages, ISBN 1 898432 49 X. Venture Public-ations, 128 Pikes Lane, Glossop SK13 8EH. £9.50.

Venture's bus company series goes into territory less familiar for some. Not for me, as I used to live on the edge of the United Counties area. Most of the companies featured in this series so far were centred on cities or conurbations, but UCOC covered an amorphous collection of small towns centred on Northampton, reaching north to Rutland, east to Cambridge, west to Oxford and south to Amersham. UCOC originated in Wellingborough, Northants before the Great War, growing by acquiring 33 other bus companies between 1921 and 1933, taken over by Tilling during that period. In 1948, Tilling companies came under BTC control, the UCOC fleet gaining the usual Bristol-ECW flavour. It duly became part of the National Bus Company in 1968. Deregulation in the 1980s meant that many companies were snapped up as private firms, but the diffuse UCOC network wasn't so attractive to buyers, and it ended up with Stagecoach in 1987. This is another well-illustrated story in a valuable series

SENTINEL Buses by John Howie and Neville Mercer, Super Prestige 9: 170 x 240mm softbound, 160 pages, ISBN 1 898432 50 3. Pub: Venture Publications, 128 Pikes Lane, Glossop, Derbyshire. SK13 8EH, UK. 18.95.

Sentinel is one of those marques which hold a fascination for enthusiasts. Their buses were rarely seen, but had charisma. Indeed, the authors describe Sentinels as the James Dean of the British bus industry! The company began as a famous builder of steam wagons and went on to make diesel lorries, but their engine technology and quality were suspect, making it hard to compete with the main truck makers. Sentinel only made motor buses on a 'production' basis for a short period. There were so few built from 1948 to the firm's closure in 1956 that this comprehensive book manages to include individual histories of every bus made, as well as the story of the company, tales of vehicles in service and even their eventual fates in scrapyard or preservation. The great selection of rare illustrations will satisfy any Sentinel fan.

Duesenberg by Dennis Adler, 276 pages, 255 photos. 240 x 310 mm. Hardbound with dust cover. ISBN 0-87349-388-5. Published by Krause , USA.

Fred and Augie Duesenberg's achievement was not an overnight success, but the brothers created the ultimate in automotive engineering. E L Cord's leadership and financial backing, coachwork from the world's greatest bodybuilders and Fred Duesenberg's mechanical genius meant that no two of these fantastic cars were the same and few survive. This book claims to be the ultimate history of what was billed as The World's Finest Motor Car. Many original cars are shown in old photos, juxtaposed with pictures of survivors in restored condition.

Mazda MX-5 Miata Roadster, by Toshihiko Hirai and others, translated from Japanese to English. 176 pages 145 photos, 94 drawings. Hardbound with dustjacket. 215 x 260 mm. lSBN 1-904788-29-7. Pub: Veloce Publishing Ltd, 33 Trinity Street, Dorchester, Dorset DT1 1TT, England.

This is the account of how the world's most popular sports car came into being. A team of dedicated designers and engineers boldly conceived a new lightweight sports car at a time when the traditional open roadster seemed doomed to extinction. Despite considerable opposition, the group tenaciously defended its concept of a light sports car in the spirit of a Midget or Sprite. The fascinating, and often surprising, inside story of the MX-5 Miata's conception, design and production is told by individual members of the original team. We can follow its evolution, from first design sketches and clay models to early production cars.

Interesting pictures, technical data and the comments of the well-informed author all combine to give us an insight into the Lamborghini range, the life's work of Ferrucio Lamborghini and the current set-up of the company, which now belongs to Audi, within the overall Volkswagen Group.

THousand Mile Trial by Elizabeth Bennett, 364 pages, 411 illustrations 220 x 300 mm. Hardbound with dust jacket. ISBN 0-9537930-0-1. Published by Elizabeth Bennett. Heathfield, East Sussex. Available from Hove Books Ltd. 30, The Industrial Estate. Henfield Road, Small Dole. West Sussex, BN5 9XR UK.

At the end of 1899 in Britain few folk had seen a motor car and many scoffed at the idea of their ever becoming a commercial or practical success. In the hope of enlightening the public the Automobile Club decided to hold a demonstration trial in spring 1900. None of the small group of enthusiastic motorists when this adventure was planned knew how to create a schedule that could be maintained. The intention was to test human endurance, plus the reliability and safety of the machines. This book tells the story of the conception and execution of this bold plan, using contemporary reports and photos, some previously unpublished.

CLUB NEWS
Collated by Rod Ward

Natal Diecast Model Collectors: Chairman Geoffrey Sear is one of those struggling to persuade members to contribute to the club newsletter. 'In a nutshell: no articles, no newsletter. Is that what you want?' he asks. Terry Morgan can no longer produce the newsletter, so Geoff is also looking for a new Editor. If the membership can't be bothered to offer an article, it looks like he'll have an uphill struggle finding someone who'll take on the responsibilities of editing. It's well-known as a thankless task, trying to persuade others to contribute; then when as usual they don't, having to write the whole newsletter yourself. If you'd like to join the NDMC and make your contribution, contact Geoffrey Sear at 7, Dryden Place, Umbilo, Durban 4001, South Africa.

Tel: 031205 0100.

South Hants Model Auto Club: Sue and Stu Leake, joint Editors of the SHMAC newsletter, are still getting interesting contributions from members. They must be doing something right, when all other newsletter editors complain of a paucity of material to publish. Saab fan Iain Hodcroft writes about a visit to the August Horch Museum in Zwickau, and admits to being unfaithful to his first love, driving a hired Smart Forfour ('horrible' he says). Other well-travelled members who describe their trips include Fred Harris (Ingolstadt, for a swapmeet and the Audi museum), Stuart Brotchie (NEC Classic car Show) and Stu Leake (Eastleigh swapmeet). they do see the world, don't they? Well, Germany, Birmingham and Hampshire anyway. If you'd like to contribute tales of your travels, you have to be a member of the Club; ring Secretary Dave Painter on 01264 366408.

Cape Model and Toy Club: The Cape Model Collector is the newsletter of the CMTC, edited by Glyn Murrell. A popular Club activity described in the latest issue by Donovan Josias is 'Show n crawl', where members host other club members in their homes, on this occasion at three different locations in the Southern suburbs of Capetown. Three very different collections dazzled the 17 members who 'crawled' between them, ending up at a local restaurant for dinner. 'It was 9:30 by the time we called it a day', recalls Donovan with awe. Yes, I know that in southern Europe, that's when people go out for dinner, but Anglophone folks like to be tucked up in bed by ten o'clock. Glyn has other contributions, including some from old MAR pal Ron Gersbank. If you'd like to join this sociable group, contact Secretary Graham Ramsay on 072 156 6806 at any hour.

NAMAC: Ben van Roode tells me that, with more than 5000 members the Netherlands club Namac enters its 40th year, 'still going strong'. At a special swapmeet in the Hague later this year there will be an exhibition with 100 showcases of models. With the club magazine all members got a free 2005 calendar.

In September this year Namac will publish a 192 page full colour book, written by Ben, covering the club's history and 40 years of collecting in the Netherlands, with contributions from many authors.

'There will be a club model released as well', notes Ben, 'For the 25th Anniversary we had made a Corgi Morris Minor van, of which there were two versions. The first batch (about 1000) was made in the UK. The other 2000 were made in China, the models differing from each other in several details'.

The Namac club magazine Auto in Miniatuur is beautifully produced; not just the best model vehicle club publication in the world, it is possibly the nicest-looking model vehicle magazine in the world. If it wasn't for the impenetrable Dutch language, it would have a much wider readership. I'm not certain who you contact if you want to join Namac; try Secretary Pieter Grenendyk, tel 071-522 4004 or email secretaris@namac.nl

The Lledo Enthusiast and Variations Club: I was curious to see how this Club, and its membership, would react to the abolition of the Lledo trade name by Corgi. In the latest issue of his Lledo Enthusiast newsletter, Bill Alexander says, 'The masthead of this publication will stay the same for as long as it is published and, with your agreement, I would like to continue to the end of the volume; September 2005'. If he doesn't continue after that, it will be a pity, and will leave a gap. After the demise of the earlier Lledo-oriented publications from Ray Bush and Ray Dowding, it was the last remaining information source for most Lledo fans. If you have an opinion on the Lledo changes, or would like to lend your support, Bill Alexander would like to hear from you at 33 North Town Moor, Maidenhead, Berks SL6 7JR.

West Australian Model Collectors Club: Ian Hind, Editor of Showcase, the WAMCC Club publication, really packs his pages with news, much of it apparently gleaned from the internet. Trade gossip and information on online prices combine with news of models from around the world, including all the latest products from Australian companies. It seems there is a dispute between Biante and Classic Carlectables over the rights to produce models of Peter Brock's Holden Monaro 427 which won Bathurst in 2003. This is a big deal in Australia, where whoever gets the exclusive rights to make it will have a sell-out item on their hands. To join the WAMCC; phone Ian on 934 9369, or email jhind@iinet.net.au

Wessex Model and Toy Collectors: Barry Lloyd, Editor of the WMTC newsletter, Smalltalk, never fails to entertain his readership with his jolly japes and jokes. Now punnigly titled Tab-Lloyd, this funster originates from Plymouth, and is slightly upset with the Plymouth Diecast Collectors Club, who never fail to have a dig at the WMTC in their club newsletter. They claim 'We are one of the best-attended clubs in the UK; our nearest, Wessex, only managed 24 at their AGM ... out of a membership of 114'. It seems to me inappropriate to criticise other clubs at a time when all of the collecting world is suffering from decreasing activity, ageing or dying participants and so on. But that may explain why the Plymouth Club never sends news to this column. They are so well-attended that they don't need any more members. So we may never know what benefits the Plymouth Club offers. The Wessex Club has monthly clubnights and other events, Barry's entertaining Smalltalk, and the possiblity to buy a Club Lansdowne model of an Austin Atlantic, top up in cream. If you can contribute, contact Membership Secretary Doug Male on 01225 755043.

Maidenhead Static Model Club: Like most Clubs, the MSMC is always happy to welcome new members. Chairman Peter Carpenter suggests that if members know anyone remotely interested in collecting they should bring him to a clubnight, where a couple of the committee will take him into a back room and (with a minimum of broken fingers) convince him to join. Membership is currently around 90-plus, and capacity is 120, so new blood would be welcome. He also notes that out of 90-plus folk at the MSMC Christmas bash, more than 60 were members, two thirds of the total membership, a very commendable turnout. In a recent issue of te MSMC newsletter Wheel Bearings, Colin Penn rightly congratulates Les Duplock on his transformation of the publication. Responses to Les's 'Where are they now?' feature include Modellers World magazine, which co-founder Mike Richardson says was sold to an HRCA member in East Anglia and the title has not been heard of since. If you'd like to join the Maidenhead Static Model Club, you can attend a future club night as a guest (at risk to your fingers). Contact Membership Secretary Alan Simpson on 01494 813903.

Corgi USA Collector Club: The main benefits of this new Club are a four page quarterly newsletter, a free annual club model and free catalogues. Membership costs $25, from Corgi USA Inc, Attn Club Administrator, 175 W Jackson Blvd, Suite 1770, Chicago IL 60604 USA or you can log onto www.corgi-usa.com to join the Club.

NOREV TO THE RESCUE
By Hans-Georg Schmitt

Some recent Norev 1:43 diecast models have featured emegency vehicle subjects. All these described here were pictured in Model Auto Review 189, on page 189.60.

518750 Renault Master Phase 2 Pompier VSR, fire vehicle for attendance at road accidents in red with white and yellow printing. There are two blue light bars, and a telescopic flood-light pole to illuminate accident sites.

518751 Renault Master Vehicule de Secours et d'Assistance aux Victimes. Many ambulances used by French fire brigades are built on the Renault Master chassis. This one is on the 2003 facelifted version of this popular van with a new front end and new rear light arrangement. It has a 115 bhp 2463cc diesel engine, good for a maximum speed of 140 km/h. It is fitted with Mercura roof beacons and additional decals are included.

154539 Citroen H fire van. Up to the end of the 1970s, the Citroen H was still popular with rural fire brigades. Norev's model is equipped with two ladders, a fire extinguisher and other separate components. 1.5 million of the Citroen H were made up to 1981, a record lifetime for any commercial vehicle. Fitted with a diesel engine and front wheel drive, it could reach a maximum speed of 88 km/h, not very fast in a fire emergency, perhaps, but probably adequate for poorly-surfaced rural lanes and byways.
