MORE RATIONALISATION
Anyone who read MAR 150 carefully could detect more signs of 'rationalisation' in the model industry, often described as being 'over-capacity'. The sale of Exclusive First Editions, the 'merger' of Provence Moulage and Starter, acquisition of Mira by Solido, transfer of Oxford Die-Cast production to the Far East, are all straws in the wind. Add to these the decision of Roco to discontinue manufacture of civilian vehicles, and many less-publicised cut-backs in forward plans by other companies, and you have a picture of further retrenchment in the industry. We still have some extensive lists of new releases for 2001, of course, but the ultimate ownership of many ranges is now in fewer hands. And we think we detect a slower development of totally new products, with a larger proportion of rehashed existing items in certain ranges, to make up some of the long, long, lists we see in this issue of MAR. There are a few big players, however, who are still pushing forward with big investment in new model subjects. Neither Minichamps nor Vitesse Group, for instance, intend to be the first to blink in their contention for top place in the model stakes. Another good year for releases, and thinner wallets all round.
A BUMPER CROP?
Following my note in MAR 150 about a perceived lack of news to fill MAR when it started, I see that our last few issues have had a bumper crop of news, features and articles. It seems as we go on, we get more and more interesting stuff to fill our pages. The last time I saw such a bumper crop was when one of our apple trees, previously not particularly prolific, suddenly produced three or four times the usual quantity of fruit, and much tastier than usual. Then it promptly died, and we spent all the Christmas holiday trying to remove the dead trunk (apple wood is one of the hardest woods, used to make cogs for watermills). Let us hope that is not an omen! Keep your contribut-ions coming in, then we can ensure bumper crops for many years to come, and no dead wood.

PROTAR RACING HERITAGE
Tarquinio Provini was born in Piacenza in 1933. From a young age he was obsessed by all things mechanical, motorcycles in particular. He became a famous racing motorcyclist, but he suffered a disastrous accident in 1966, and was told by his doctors that his back was broken, so he would never walk, let alone ride, again. He turned to making highly detailed scale model motorcycles instead, and the modern factory which now stands in Bologna, with its extensive model range, is the result. Among the 2001 plans for Protar, his company: Mythic Bike Collection 1:9 scale:
Ducati 996, Kawasaki Ninja ZX7R, Ducatti 996 two seater, BMW Cruiser R1200C Classic, Ducati 748 two seater, MV Agusta 750 F4 SPR,

CLUB NEWS
Citroen Model and Memorabilia Collectors Club: The CMMCC was started in 1993 by two Citroen Car Club members to provide a quarterly newsletter on Citroen models, books etc. Difficulties in keeping up to date with a printed publication have provoked the decision to only send out newsletters in future by email. Existing members who do not have an email address will get a printed copy until their subscriptions run out. For more information contact C David Conway at 152 Barkham Road, Wokingham, Berks RG41 2RP or email: conwayCV2@bigfoot.com
Enfield & District Veteran Vehicle Society: A speciality of the EDVVS Model Collecting Group is to have interesting speakers at meetings. In February Michael Driver told the history of Jaguar, and on 11 April Rob Miles will describe his two collections, hearses and three wheelers. Colin Penn covers chops and restorations on 13 June and Patrick Trench uncovers rare and weird Renaults on 10 October. Non-members are welcome, for £2.00 admission, at Whitewebbs Museum, Whitewebbs Road, Enfield, Middlesex. For more information on these meetings, or on club membership, phone John Harrison on 020 8508 8851, or email harrison@unisonfree.net
Coventry Diecast Model Club: The CDMC club model, for members only, is a Corgi Classics gold plated 1:43 Jaguar E Type 1961. The club has obtained 72 of the 4100 run, and members can buy one at £19.95. The CDMC continues to maintain its reputation as the friendly club, and in Wheelspin it has one of the best club magazines worldwide. Fascinating articles and pictures, news, jokes and information, make it worth the price of membership alone. And where else could you get nine pictures of Will Roe in one publication? For membership info, phone 024 7630 7700.
South Hants Model Auto Club: It is some time since we have seen the SHMAC magazine, but it is as interesting as ever, with articles on various subjects, with a bias towards competition cars. They are not all speed-mad in the SHMAC, though the excellent displays they put on at shows around the country are often themed to race and rally subjects. As well as the magazine, club members can attend monthly meetings and other events. For membership details, contact Charman Rod Fox on 0238 432226.
Volkswagen Model Club: Jim McLachlan continues to pack the VWMC magazine with news, articles and photos on all things to do with miniature Volkswagens. There is still a lot to say on the subject, and with the help of his team of international contributors, Jim will make sure it is all recorded in print. In the February issue you can read about VWs by Prameta, Nicky Toys, Wiking and dozens more makers. If you are interested in VW models, club membership is a must. Write to Jim at VWMC, 20 Waverley Park, Redding, Falkirk FK2 9RT, Scotland.
Jaguar Model Club: In the latest JMC magazine Gary Oxley gives us an interesting insight into the production of 'signed' limited editions. The next Club model was to be a Jaguar driven by Stirling Moss, leading to negotiations with his manager Donn Gurney who quoted a charge of £15.00 per signature (£750.00 for 50) but agreed to reduce it to £10.00 per signature in view of the Club's limited finances. Gary considers this very reasonable, so the limited edition of XKC005, Stirling's Jaguar C-type from Reims 1952, will bear the famous driver's signature. But you have to be a JMC member to be able to order one. Members can also order another special model, the XK150S Hartin fastback coupe, a kit by Provence Moulage or a handbuilt model (only 100 made). Club membership costs £18.00 (UK), slightly more elsewhere, so contact Gary at 11 Birchwood Drive, Ravenfield, Rotherham S65 4PT, UK.
The Lansdowne Collectors Club: The Lansdowne Club was formed in September 1999 by Robert and Simon Timmis, devoted to the British and Swedish model cars made by Lansdowne and Robeddie. Members get four magazines a year and an annual exclusive club model. In the first year, the club model was a 1956 Ford Zephyr Six Convertible de ville (half open), in ivory with blue hood or mandarin red with black hood, only 130 of each colour made. The second year club model is a 1937 Jensen Dual Cowl Phaeton in red with cream interior, white wall tyres and chrome wire wheels. there are also two Omen miniatures figures, Cary Grant and a lady. Membership costs £17.00 (UK), £21.00 (Europe), £23.00 (Rest of World), write to: Robert Timmis, Lansdowne Collectors Club, 203 Northwich Road, Lower Stretton, Warrington, Cheshire, WA4 4PF, England. Tel: 01925-730504
Lledo Enthusiast and Variations Club: Bill Alexander continues to keep his members up to date with a newsletter every alternate month. The latest edition lists Days Gone Ford T cars, and all Mini or Mini Cooper variants. Bill also describes all recent Lledo issues, bemoaning the dearth of information from Corgi, even misinformation in the case of the US Chevron series, which he was assured would include no new releases. Then an American friend pointed out that three new models had been announced including an aeroplane (from the new series listed in avia mini XV), but at prices almost double the previous series. Bill is, understandably, a bit peeved. For membership details contact Bill at 33 North Town Moor, Maidenhead, Berks SL6 7JR.

PROMOTIONAL CARS & TRUCKS 1934-38 by Steve Butler,
Published by Schiffer.

Many, if not most, American model vehicle collectors were first introduced to the hobby by the acquisition of a 'promo'. Some of these model cars were intended to promote events, such as World Fairs, or products including auto-related and consumer items, but mostly when we say 'promotionals, it is taken to mean the models produced for car dealerships to encourage sales of new automobiles. These models were made of cast metal or rubber at first, but when plastic became the medium of choice the detail levels improved considerably. A dealer could display a complete line of newly launched cars, sedans, coupes, convertibles, wagons, and maybe all the colour options, even though he didn't have all the full-size cars in his showroom. The models could be used as 'clinchers' to seal the deal, the customer taking away a model of his car, which would be delivered later. Or they could just be used as sweeteners, given to a potential buyer's child on the forecourt. Makers of promotional cars were sometimes also known for their other products, such as plastic kits, like AMT or Jo-Han (and often the same subject would appear later as a kit) but others are only remembered today for their promo models. Many promos are now very rare and desirable, fetching high prices, and this book includes a price guide, but collectors should be aware of reissues of certain models, which are worth much less than the original versions, and all are described here. This book is a very comprehensive survey of the subject up to 1983, with hundreds of colour photographs and many pages of listings to fill in all the details. There is also coverage of related literature, production methods, and much more. The author has told the story well, illustrated it superbly and filled in many gaps in our knowledge along the way. Schiffer Publishing have matched his efforts with the quality of production we have now come to expect from their many books on collecting. A fascinating read, and an indispensible reference for collectors of American cars.

Yorkshire Woollen by John Banks, photo-graphs by G H F Atkins. Pub: Venture Publications, telephone: 01457 861508. ISBN 1-898432-28-7
West Yorkshire by John Banks, photographs by G H F Atkins. Pub: Venture Publications.
Both books: 64 pages, 90+ illustrations, 170 x 240 mm. Colour cover, softbound. ISBN 1-898432-29-5
Both of these titles are published in the Prestige Series which is specially produced to feature the photographs of Geoffrey Atkins.
Although I have never met him, I feel I have known Mr Atkins for most of my life. If you picked up any book or magazine on buses, from the 1950s to the present day, somewhere there would be a picture credited to G H F Atkins. These photographs are instantly recognisable as coming from his camera. I can think of only two other photographers that share this characteristic, but they do not cover the variety of subjects or the long time span of G H F Atkins. He was born in 1912, took his first bus photograph in 1927, and is still pressing the camera shutter today. Not only that, he also does all his own developing and printing. The editor of the Prestige Series and writer of the text, is John Banks, who has known Mr Atkins for a number of years. The first title under review here is devoted to the Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Co Ltd. The short introduction creates a 'feel' for the company and its operating territory, rather than making any attempt at a full history. The photographs cover the period from the late 1920s to it when the company became part of the National Bus Company. The name no longer exists, since the company become a member of the Arriva group. The photographic captions are brief but informative and the illustrations cover a good cross section of the fleet. The second book is on the West Yorkshire Road Car Company, a firm with which I am more familiar. When I was a child we travelled on their buses every week, and also for day trips and holidays. I also worked for the West Yorkshire company from 1975 onwards for about 15 years, so this book brought back many memories. This time Mr Banks makes no attempt to describe the company history, instead he relies on some reminiscences by Phil Battersby (who actually comes from County Durham, not West Yorkshire). Due credit is given to the help received from the West Yorkshire Information Service, help which is apparent from the photo captions. When I received these books I thought I would pick out three of my favourite pictures from each. This proved impossible, as they are all of similar quality, so I picked just one. The frontispiece of the West Yorkshire book depicts a Tilling Stevens with York Minster majestically in the background. This was taken in 1936 and is typical of G H F Atkins. Its quality could not be bettered today. Both books are essential material for bus enthusiasts, are good nostalgic fodder for the more general transport enthusiast and offer good value for your money.

TRAMWAY MUSEUM SHOW
By Peter JohanssonOn 28 and 29 April, we are holding a Road Transport Models Show. Although it is primarily intended for those who build or modify models, there will also be a fair showing of collectable road transport models. A number of exhibitors from the Model Bus Federation and the National Association of Road Transport Modellers have already booked display space. Traders are also being invited. We would like to make a special offer to MAR readers in the form of discounted admission, at the 'group' rate of £5.90 instead of the usual £7.00. See the Show advertisement in this issue of Model Auto Review. In addition to the model show, the Museum will be providing all its usual attractions and facilities, including unlimited tram riding throughout the day, and our usual range of displays and exhibitions, all included in the entrance fee.
MODEL PREMIER 2002
In an attempt to fill the aching void left when the doors closed on the last Modelex show in 2000, Richard Hutchins has announced Model Premier 2002. The show will be held annually, from June 2002, at Kelham Hall, Newark, Nottingham. It will be a two day show (trade and press on Saturday, public on Sunday). Richard says 'Model Premier is exclusively for white metal, resin and pewter model manufacturers and related businesses. It will never have retail shops included in the event, though manufacturers who are also retailers will be allowed. The show will not just be for model cars, it will also include makers of figures, boats, planes, trains and much more.' For full show details or to reserve a ticket, send a large A4 stamped addressed envelope to 21 Cherry Tree Avenue, Withernsea. East Riding of Yorkshire HU19 2LY, fax 44 (0) 1964 613451, tel 44 (0) 1964 614695, email show@modelpremier.co.uk. Richard has also set up an internet website at www.modelpremier.co.uk

REVELLING IN SALES?
JOHN WHITEHEAD found a new sales brochure at his local Lincoln dealer in Cheyenne, WY. "It may very well be the first time that illustrations of model cars have been used in brochures for new cars', he says. The 2002 Lincoln Blackwood brochure features photos of the box art from the Revell kits of the Continental Mark II, Ford Woody 1931 and Lincoln Futura, with the strapline, 'The last time you were this excited over a vehicle, you had to put it together yourself'. The reply-paid postcard is headed 'Only serious collectors need apply'.

FIRST GEAR DRAGSTER
By Terry LeonardOur l:25 scale die-cast metal top fuel dragster is First Gear's first venture into the exciting world of top fuel drag racing, crafted from more than 60 parts, with fully detailed engine including headers, valve covers, intake manifold, blower and blower drive belt, fuel pumps, oil pan, topped off with an injector scoop and detailed explosion straps. The dragster is more than 15 inches long: exterior details include parachutes and tethers, clutch brain box, Goodyear Eagle tyres on the rear and bicycle tyres on the front. Interior details include instrument panel, scatter shield, roll hoop, kick panel, hand brake, dashboard, and steering grip.
EURO MODEL RETURNS
We thought that Euro Model had disappeared for good when the Berlin company closed, but now we have seen a 2001 new releases leaflet, giving addresses in Mexico and the Netherlands. The product line looks familiar, 1:87 plastic German vehicles, rubber eraser cars etc but a few interesting buses are also listed, such as Neoplan N4026 double decker, Neoplan N6 minibus etc. We guess that these are in the resin series. Availability unknown.
THAT'S ALL FOLKS!
By Maz WoolleyThe Del Prado Ultimate Car Collection is now complete, and I have to say that my admiration for regular MAR correspondents has increased enormously, as I discovered that even writing simple reviews takes much more time than one would ever think. (But it is always so appreciated, Ed.).
#70 Nissan Skyline GTR 1993 silver right hand drive. A pretty good model of one of the ultimate hot cars, seldom seen in the UK and in 1993 not officially imported at all. The level of finish is frankly only just above the best of the Action Toys we have seen here over the last year. Only the separate mirrors, front lights, and the way the distinctive rear lenses have been captured lifts the model above market stall level. The very dark tinted windows made it difficult to identify whether it was right hand drive, let alone what the level of detail is inside. A squint suggests that the dash is, as usual, in fair detail but lacking decals for details and there is no trim detailing. Baseplate detail is restricted to the running gear and exhaust and is, as ever, marred by the mounting lugs. On balance the series has been worth collecting although, frustratingly, several interesting models mentioned in the publicity failed to appear:
Maserati Bora, Facel Vega HK 500, Lotus 'Spirit', Pegaso, Honda Civic, Vauxhall Viva, Hispano Suiza, Rolls Royce Silver Cloud. It's a shame that the Facel Vega, Pegaso and Viva were missed. There were only three really poor models, the rest were mostly pretty good, some exceptionally so for the price, though the current price of remaindered models means some could have been obtained elsewhere cheaply as well. I hope that the series has introduced some new collectors to the hobby who will visit swapmeets and start collecting other models. Here is my complete listing of the models from the series: 1 Jaguar E Type

RENAISSANCE MUSINGS
By Etienne DhontFor us, 2001 is the Year of the new workshop! On 1 December 2000, we began to move in to our new place, at Salome, a little village near La Bassée, west of Lille. Moving took longer than expected. We only re-started moulding on 15 January, so please, be patient, we are doing our best to catch up. In 2001 we will continue the way we went in 2000: More 1:24 kits and transkits, and still some 'old' 1:43 subjects. Maybe modern cars will be modelled once they are old? 1:24 kits include the Ferrari TR60, now available (except the engine, still awating pattern), also a surprise, the Ford Mk IV LM 1967. The R5 Turbo and 911 SCRS are almost complete, only few details to finish The 935 K3 is on my desktop. I will probably do the same as we did in 1:43 scale for the Ferrari TR60, evolution to TR60-61 by s/n 0780 at Modena, then Sebring and later Le Mans 1961. Transkits: will include modern cars! Beginning with MC 2001, but some re-issues from Tamiya and new items like the Lancia 037 from Fujimi will make us refer to our old books and magazines. 1:43 scale: Apart from the French 206 WRC, no modern cars, The diecast makers are producing too many! The fully-detailed kit of the 206 is still awaiting reliable documents from Peugeot, no way we can do anything! Oldtimers: I'm continuing the Testa Rossa line: After the hybrid s/n 0780, a true TR61 is coming soon, then 330 TRI 1962 (the last evolution of s/n 0780); again, this means an engine to complete! The true 330P 1964 is on my desktop, also a 500TRC pontoon-fendered LM 1958 car, #25. Other Oscas will appear, first the Laroche car from LM 1956-57, a car that ended up rear-engined at LM 1961! For Porsche Fans: Following the success of the 935 Martini LM 1976, I will do the whole batch of Martini Porsches. Almost ready are a 911 RS 2.7-2.8 and the Mugello 1976 935/76. Later, the 935/76 first body (with normal headlights), then the RSR 1974 are projected, and a 935/77 is on the desktop.

VOLKSWAGEN KITS
MDM is a Czech company which specialises in unusual kits. They began with vac-form aircraft, progressing through injection moulding in steel moulds to short-run plastic injection moulding using non-metallic moulds. This enables them to tackle more unusual subjects. Their vehicular activity is mostly military, including the Volkswagen family. In 1:35 scale they make VW Type 82E Beetle saloon, VW type 87 with sun roof, VW type 83 Reichspost van-ambulance and VW type 230 gas-powered, with bulging front boot lid. Other 1:35 subjects include PzKpfw 35 tank and PzBef 35 tank. In 1:15 scale there are a couple of light artillery pieces and a VW Type 16 Schwimmwagen (yes, 1:15 scale).
